Boobs and more boobs in Dead or Alive 5 Last Round video Posted: 20 Feb 2015 03:00 PM PST If the latest Dead or Alive 5 Last Round trailer didn't have enough explosions for you, then check out this not-creepy-at-all video released by PlayStation Japan that could very well allow you to create your own private explosions. In the awkwardly silent presentation, we get the pleasure of knowing just what the difference is between the PS3 version of the game and its PS4 counterpart. Here's a hint, it has something to do with the boobs. Finally! A Scientific Comparison Of Boob Physics Between PS3 & PS4 [GAMEBREAKER]
Meta Knight line, purchase, unboxing, and 2-Pac Posted: 20 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST Sometimes you get up in the morning and you need coffee. Sometimes on the way back from getting that coffee, you think "Is Best Buy open yet? Aren't they selling a special amiibo today?" so you swing by and see that there's pretty much no line. Then you find out that there was a line, but that since it's freezing out, everyone was waiting in their cars, hoping that no one would be dumb enough to wait outside. When they see you approach the door, they get out of their cars and come shambling towards you en masse like a horde of frozen zombies, afraid that their precious amiibo may be at risk of being snatched from their icy, desperate grasp. Sometimes you start talking to the guy at the front of the line and discover that he knows who you are. He's a pretty cool guy, so you decide to hang out for a bit and get that amiibo, even though it's cold and you have a billion other things you should be doing. Then you remember what you do for a living and think, "What the heck, I guess I'll whip out my phone and make a video for my videogame blog." Sadly, the sound for that video sometimes gets all screwed up, probably because you got your phone wet during one of the five blizzards that leveled your town over the past month. So what do you do now, son? Well if you're on point, you consult 2-Pac, then you finish your video. That's what I did today. I hope you like how it turned out!
Exclusive footage of the 'Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late' naming process Posted: 20 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST Kyle's review of Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late is now up, and we've acquired exclusive footage of the very complicated naming process used. It all makes sense now!
| The 2015 Academy Awards, brought to you by Nintendo Posted: 20 Feb 2015 11:30 AM PST In anticipation of the Academy Awards this Sunday, Nintendo decided to come up with its own amusing awards for the 2015 Oscar nominees. The winners for each category are:
I love when companies let loose and have fun like this. Which awards would you add to the list? I'll go ahead and nominate Big Hero 6 for "The King Dedede Award for most huggable character." |
Killer Instinct is getting a multi-faced golem and a 'Ghost Girl' Posted: 20 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST From a cosmetic perspective, I'm digging this new round of Killer Instinct characters. While the trailer is focused on next week's Aganos, a golem who looks more like a boss than a combatant, there's also a tease at the end for a character everyone seems to be calling "Ghost Girl." I hope that name sticks. Videogames can and should be weird like that sometimes.
| Sorry America and Europe, no Diablo III microtransactions for you Posted: 20 Feb 2015 10:30 AM PST Blizzard has revealed that their upcoming 2.2.0 patch for Diablo III will include microtransactions. However there's a catch: It won't apply to the Americas or EU regions. So, I guess that leaves everyone else to milk that Diablo cow dry. Here's what the respective community managers had to say: ... some new features may start to show up in data mined information for patch 2.2.0 that will not apply to all regions. Specifically, the following features will not apply to the Americas (and Europe): A new currency called "Platinum"
While the above features will not apply to this region, players will still benefit from some of the quality of life perks tied to these additions, such as a streamlined UI for selecting cosmetic benefits like pets and Collector's Edition wings. Furthermore, the community managers said that Blizzard has "no immediate plans to implement such purchases anytime soon" for both the Americas region and Europe. So, this is a good thing, right? I would think most of us despise the whole practice anyway. We'll just have to see how long these microtransaction embargoes actually last. Patch 2.2.0 Features and Data Mining [Battle.net] |
| Year of the Goat: goats/sheep/rams in videogames Posted: 20 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST [We neglected President's Day and Ben Davis got Valentine's Day but community member Luna Sy didn't forget about Lunar New Year! Celebrate the new year with some of gaming's most interesting goats, sheep, and rams. Want to see your stuff on the front page? Join the community and start a blog today! By the way, I'm a dragon -Striderhoang] Happy Chinese New Year! Do you guys celebrate that? That’s the holiday where you can ask for a free rice cake from your Chinese friends. | Twitch announces TwitchCon for September 2015 Posted: 20 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST Today, Amazon-owned videogame streaming service Twitch.tv announced a convention "dedicated to Twitch’s community of partners, broadcasters, and viewers." The show will run from September 25-26, 2015 in San Francisco at Moscone West, a satellite venue at the Moscone Convention Center. Currently, there is no official word as to what TwitchCon will be, aside from the obvious. According to the press release, "Attendees will have the chance to mingle with each other and their favorite broadcasters, experience live content from the convention center, and learn from the community’s thought-leaders." Mmm, thought-leaders. Haven't heard that one in a while! The convention will likely have some kind of show floor similar to PAX, based on the "contact us for exhibitor opportunities" link displayed on TwitchCon's otherwise bare-bones official site. Twitch will be partnering with ReedPOP, the company that runs all those PAXes in addition to the NYC Comic Con and some other events for huge nerds. With the nuts-and-bolts of the convention seemingly taken care of, TwitchCon will likely rise or fall depending on the guest list and available panels. Sure hope nobody gets swatted! |
Friday Night Fights - Don't Call Me Shirley Posted: 20 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST Welcome back to another FNF! As you may have seen, we brought EU FNF back this week (Huge thanks to Panzadolphin). I'm very excited to get more community stuff going and to include everyone as much as possible. I'm sorry if I'm bothering any of you with the PMs and all that, but I do it out of love and a desire to see us all connected. Like the human centipede, but sexier. With some Bill Paxton thrown in. Mainly because I want him to eat my poop. That's hawt. Is this getting weird? I tend to make things weird sometimes. I'll just start rambling and it'll make no sense. Then I get an awkward boner and everyone starts calling me a monster because I'm in a Build-A-Bear workshop. Nude. Hypocrites. Moving on from my current legal drama, how awesome was that letter from Papa Niero? I absolutely love seeing that level of interaction from both staff and users here. It's why I planted my meat flag in the ground and call this place home. I personally love the direction Dtoid is moving in. Seeing staff interact more, having the fun being injected into things again. Silliness. More community involvement. Those are the things that brought and kept me here. I look forward to seeing this place grow, as well as doing my part to keep you folks playing together. Speaking of playing together, I'll have a blog post going up in this next week detailing the first two game tournaments I'm organizing. Mortal Kombat 9 and COD: AW are the two titles I picked out and I'm really excited to see how this goes over. If you have any other suggestions, please leave them in the comments below, so I can gauge interest. In other playing together news, EU FNF isn't the only thing getting revived this week. StriderHoang is lending a hand to SmurfeeMcGee so we can get Nintendo FNF going again. Exciting times I'd say, in regards to gaming with you all. With all that said, let's get to some gaming.
These old Pokémon ads and toys bring me back Posted: 20 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST I went down an Internet wormhole last night when I really, truly should've just gone to bed. It began with this Imgur album of old Pokémon ads, but as someone who grew up alongside Pokémania, it couldn't end there. I had flashbacks of kids bringing their crinkled posters of "all 150 Pokémon" to recess; worrying we'd be late to a screening of Pokémon: The First Movie; arguing with my mom about whether pocket monsters were a fad like the amiibo of the day, Beanie Babies. What began as a nostalgic evening has become a nostalgic morning because, after sleeping on it, I decided that scouring the web for more of this old stuff would be a good use of my time. Here's what I found.
Review: Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late Posted: 20 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST The competition is fierce, and I'm not just talking about the folks delivering beat downs online. With so many fighting games on the market nowadays, fans of the genre are spoiled for choice. Studios are vying for mindshare, just as we're battling in the arena. Want people to take notice? Well then, you had better bring your 'A' game. And make sure to come out swinging. That's exactly what Melty Blood studio French Bread has done with Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late, the latest 2D fighter to throw its hat into the ring. It might look like just another high-flying "anime" fighter at first glance, but looks can be deceiving. Under Night In-Birth is its own beast, one absolutely deserving of your time and attention.
Roundabout has one of the most tedious Achievements imaginable Posted: 20 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST Roundabout, the quirky FMV game about a constantly revolving limousine, came out on Xbox One today. I've been playing it for review (coming soon!), but upon reaching the end, I found one of the most tedious, mundane, and diabolical Achievements ever put into a videogame. The ending unlocks a new challenge mode that has an Achievement named "Smoke & Mirrors" that is described as "Drive the entire 'classic' length of Desert Limo without crashing." This is a call-back to what some consider one of the worst games ever created: Penn and Teller's unreleased Desert Bus. And, it takes eight hours of barely paying attention to complete. In Desert Bus, players simulate a real-time drive from Tucson, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada in a bus that can't go any faster than 45 miles-per-hour. The only real task is making sure it doesn't careen off the road -- something that's accomplished by ever-so-slightly resisting the vehicle's natural veer. It's about as boring as boring can get. As of last night, I was the world-record holder in Desert Limo, clocking in at somewhere just over 32 minutes. I had no idea what the "classic length" was considered. Upon looking it up, I found that the developer confirmed an eight hour session is necessary to earn the 51GS Achievement. Well then. I'm not sure when, but I think I may eventually make a run for this Achievement. It'll be in the name of science. I want to chronicle my time with a running diary to share with you. But, please don't hold me to it, because, good lord, that's a long time to stare at a screen while doing (almost) nothing.
Start prepping right now for Bloodborne's meanest bosses Posted: 20 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST The Boy Scouts are notoriously prepared, and for good reason. Rushing into a situation makes for plans going awry. When things go off the rails, failure's usually imminent. In a game like Bloodborne, failure's part of the formula. It's going to happen, so resign yourself to that fact right now. But, this IGN first look at some of the bosses and mini-bosses of Yharnam might help yield some surprisingly fruitful results. Except in the case of that last guy. He looks like a real mean, tough bastard.
Rez, Lumines creator working on puzzle RPG '18' Posted: 20 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST On a few separate occasions this year, I've been reminded that Rez exists and felt a flood of guilt after recalling how long it's been since I last played this ridiculously cool sequence (too long). A new Rez, or Rez HD on current-gen systems, would be heavenly. Some of you Tetsuya Mizuguchi fans are calling for more Lumines or Meteos (!!!), and we're at least getting the former on phones. The designer is also working on a "mysterious puzzle game" called 18 that's releasing worldwide for mobile. It's another tile-matching game, sure, but the Persona-esque art has my attention. What's up with that golden Statue of Liberty head? Intriguing imagery. [Via NeoGAF]
Posted: 20 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST Moon Spider Studio has released its debut title, Harold, an endearing and challenging race game about the most incompetent runner ever to need protection from a guardian angel. With some quick thinking, quicker thumbs, and an opportunistic eye, players guide the titular Harold to victory against all odds. Who doesn't love an underdog?
Scarface as an 8-bit game is the best thing for Friday Posted: 20 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST You know how the saying goes: "First you get the money, then you get the power, THEN you get the videogame." This recreation of Scarface by 8 Bit Cinema proves that Tony finally made it. The world is yours, Mr. Montana.
Beard View: Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai 2 Posted: 20 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST Oh hello Destructoid! Its your old beard buddy Jed here, and I guess I'm officially part of the Dtoid team now. Are you proud yet dad!? This time on Beard View we're taking a look at Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai 2, the Vocaloid rhythm game for Nintendo 3DS coming stateside this May. If you can't bear to wait that long or just don't like chibi characters, you can check out the highly acclaimed Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F 2nd, which is out now for PlayStation 3 and Vita. I really wish I could have seen one of Miku's shows when she opened for Lady Gaga this summer. Perhaps having a tiny Miku performance in a box is the closest I'll get without a trip to Japan.
Watch a full walkthrough of the Yakuza Zero demo Posted: 20 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST Yakuza Zero is the next game in the Yakuza franchise coming this year in Japan on PS3 and PS4, but we know so little about it. Until this week that is, when YouTube channel Japanese Entertainment provided a full demo walkthrough of the game. It's lengthy, clocking in at just over an hour, but you'll get a good look at nearly every facet of the experience. So far the game seems a bit awkward, as most of the cutscenes feature static animations. Even then it still has some kickass combat and funny minigames, so time will tell whether or not it's a worthy addition.
Fatal Fury Final, a fanmade beat-'em-up, is now out on PC Posted: 20 Feb 2015 03:30 AM PST As we all know, Fatal Fury started off as a traditional fighting game in 1991. But over the years the cast has seem some genre crossover, even into the shoot-'em-up arena with one of my personal favorites, KOF Sky Stage. Now a modding team has reworked the original assets into a beat-'em-up, which you can grab for free from their site. It features 11 characters, two-player co-op, and four game modes. What a neat project! Fatal Fury Final [SeeProduction]
Posted: 20 Feb 2015 03:15 AM PST In the golden days of videogames blogging, when there was no juicy AAA videogame news a publisher in my shoes would have an arsenal of timeless features to forage the drought. With mobile game sales crushing console sales and the droughts going from weeks to quarters, the videogame word-slinging industry seems to be fighting for its life -- and increasingly by not exclusively focusing on games to recoup 'dem pageviews, it seems. I'm not trying to make fun of IGN for mixing up its content. Those guys do great work and we'd be lucky to have their level of success, and as far as I can remember they've always written about movies. I'm not trying to single them out, either, and it's certainly better than posting galleries of gender-swapped videogame princesses. Noble clickbait or not, if niche gaming websites were as purist as gaming subreddits these authors would be swiftly downvoted. Off-topic posts don't happen accidentally. There are meetings, tests, and good results that compel them to write one more bacon-wrapped post. However, it seems increasingly so -- and they're not alone.
| Spawn creator says that it's ok to use the character in Mortal Kombat X Posted: 20 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST Some may call Spawn a teenage power fantasy, but I still love him. As one of my favorite comics, SNES games, and TV shows growing up (the movie is still good B-level cheese), underneath the mask Spawn is a pretty complex and interesting character -- plus I'm a sucker for demonic and occult storylines. We may see the character make a return to fighting games if creator Todd McFarlane has anything to say about it, as he has just given his blessing for the character to appear in Mortal Kombat X based on an interview with GamerFitNation. I wonder if anything will come of this. Development is already far along, and it seems like the four characters for the Season Pass are already planned. | This Dead or Alive 5 Last Round trailer is basically all explosions Posted: 20 Feb 2015 02:30 AM PST If you haven't been following Dead or Alive's evolution since 2012, it's had a lot of updates. First there was Dead or Alive 5 Plus, then Ultimate, and now, Last Round. It basically has everything from ultimate, as well as two new characters and stages, some extra content, and 1080p/60fps on current-gen consoles. You can also grab the Core Fighters version on PS4 or the Xbox One Trial edition now, which is basically an extended demo. Last Round is also out for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. |
The hunt is on for the Meta Knight amiibo, here is what I found Posted: 20 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST [Update: Get this. One amiibo hunter is reporting that you can get $5 off any Wii U or 3DS game nationwide if your store does not have Meta Knight in stock. Even if your store denies you, it doesn't hurt to ask!] Today, Best Buy has opened their doors across the country and welcomed amiibo hunters. Well, they're only welcoming a select few of them of course, because stock is universally low for their exclusive Meta Knight amiibo. As I've done with a few major amiibo launches, I made a stop at a few Best Buy locations today to gauge their stock at retail, and it seems about on par with the rest of the exclusive releases.
Final Fantasy x Puzzle & Dragons crossover unveiled Posted: 20 Feb 2015 01:30 AM PST GungHo is now collaborating with Square Enix to unite the worlds of Final Fantasy and Puzzle & Dragons. That's about all we know at the moment, but we'll update you when there's more to tell. Final Fantasy x Puzzle & Dragons [GungHo Online via 4Gamer]
Destiny to get matchmaking for Heroic Weekly Strikes Posted: 20 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST Bungie has been teasing a big change for Strikes (dungeons) going forward, and drumroll...it turns out that it's matchmaking for Weekly Heroic Strikes. As one of the three "weekly" events you can do for rewards (Heroics, Nightfalls, and raids), you'll now be able to play with two other people even without a group -- the latter two still do not have matchmaking but as always, Bungie is "looking into it." This is something that should have been in the game to begin with, but going forward it's a nice change. The developer is also still prepping the heavy ammo bug fix, reputation icons, and the weapon changes for this month. Xur is selling heavy ammo for the first time in weeks this morning as well, which is hilariously timed for the imminent fix. Bungie notes that going forward, Xur will try to always sell Exotic Engrams. Other than some questionable weapon balancing this all sounds great for the future, but it's going to take real content to get people back in. Bungie Weekly Update - 02/19/2015 [Bungie]
Why the Super Mario movie is an underappreciated masterpiece Posted: 20 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST [Ed. note: El Great Burcho published this on February 2007. It's one of our Golden favorites.] No, I'm not being ironic, or corny, or funny. Neither am I drunk, stoned, nor under the influence of outside forces requiring me to like the Super Mario Bros movie anymore than I already do. I simply wish to inform you, the reader, as to the reasons why it seems to get an undeservedly bad vibe from the gaming community at large, and why we should all treat it with a hell of a lot more respect than we really do. Do you think you're prepared for how long this article is going to be? You have no idea how long this article is going to be. Hit the jump for a prepared dosage of cinematic excellence, complete with screencaps of my favorite bits.
Well, there goes tri-Ace, developer of Star Ocean Posted: 19 Feb 2015 11:00 PM PST Today is a sad day for tri-Ace fans. It appears as though mobile developer Nepro Japan has fully acquired the studio that built Star Ocean, Resonance of Fate, and one of my favorite PlayStation games of all time, Valkyrie Profile. The acquisition will force tri-Ace into a mobile development role, helping to scale up Nepro Japan's operation. The studio was pretty active recently, helping Square Enix with Lightning Returns and developing Phantasy Star Nova for Sega. I'm happy that tri-Ace is able to continue on as a developer and maybe they'll make some great mobile titles, but it's certainly the end of an era for JRPG fans. Tri-Ace [Release.tdnet.info via Doki Doki Kusoge]
Watch the official Final Fantasy XV demo livestream here Posted: 19 Feb 2015 09:05 PM PST Square Enix is running a livestream for the Final Fantasy XV demo right now, and promises to show off some new mechanics and design choices for the core game. It's called the "Active Time Report Walkthrough Special," and will detail the control scheme, as well as some other bits. The stream just kicked off and they're still in the opening chat moments, so feel free to tune in if you're interested in XV.
Puzzle & Dragons: Mario Bros. Edition is damn sexy Posted: 19 Feb 2015 05:15 PM PST Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition, the exciting new collaboration between Nintendo and GungHo Online, is coming west this May and I really couldn't be more excited. As a longtime "Pazudora" addict, it's something I never knew I always wanted, seeing those iconic characters infused with that enthralling puzzle RPG gameplay. And Puzzle & Dragons Z is in tow? Oh, boy... So, yeah, I'm pretty jazzed about this one. Watch this new trailer and get jazzed up with me.
EU FNF: The Re-Birthening...ening...ing. Posted: 19 Feb 2015 04:10 PM PST Welcome to the reboot of EU FNF! It's been a long time and is well overdue. That pic above is apparently from Norway and damn, am I jealous. Moving on from gorgeous scenery... One of the most common complaints about FNF that I've received, is that our Euro friends are always left out of the fun. We can't be having that, so the amazing Panzadolphin rebooted it in the forums and will also be posting a blog each week as well. I will be posting the front page piece around 8am GMT on Fridays and hopefully, you all will have a blast playing with each other. This week has slim pickings, but considering we just pulled this out of our butts, at least there's a decent turn out for one game. Darn last minute things. If we have any Euro streamers in the audience who would like to participate, leave a link to your channel (or PM me) in the comments and I will be sure to add it in future postings. Anyone else that wants to join in or host, post it in the comments below and next week, we will have this more traditionally organized for you all. In other news, I'll have a blog post going up in this next week detailing the first two game tournaments I'm organizing. Mortal Kombat 9 and COD: AW are the two titles I picked out and I'm really excited to see how this goes over. If you have any other suggestions, please leave them in the comments below, so I can gauge interest. With all that said, let's get to some gaming.
