This damn Morph Ball double jump in Metroid Prime Posted: 02 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST Turns out I'm rustier at Metroid Prime than I thought. I had long forgotten about this tunnel sequence in the fiery Magmoor Caverns. It's sure giving me hell. In order to reach the (entirely optional) ledge above, you have to time your bomb jumps just right or you'll plummet into lava and hear that hideous suit-melting screech again. Quick, get out! With enough practice and, crucially, an abundance of patience to go along with it, you can get up there eventually. But just to make sure you've truly mastered the trick, you have to pull it off a second time. And then a third. Mess up even once and it's back to the beginning you go. The reward for all of this? A much-deserved energy tank containing extra health for Samus. If you haven't grabbed Metroid Prime Trilogy from the Wii U eShop, I encourage you to do so while it's temporarily half price at $9.99. The first game in particular is some of Nintendo and Retro Studios' best work. It's an adventure high on atmosphere that's just begging to be dissected. |
LA Dtoiders, join us for another Game Night! Posted: 02 Feb 2015 10:30 AM PST Dtoid has once again partnered with our friends at Giant Robot and Angry Bananas to bring you another Game Night! When: February 7, from 6pm to 10pm Read on for full details on the games we'll be playing! |
Halo: The Master Chief Collection players must wait for next major patch Posted: 02 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST There were some shaky launches last year. While Assassin's Creed: Unity had faces disappearing and slowdown, and Dragon Age: Inquisition had weird character freezes and misfiring dialog triggers, these games couldn't hold a candle to the absolute disaster of Halo: The Master Chief Collection's broken multiplayer and buggy single-player. Multiple multi-gigabyte patches since November haven't completely rectified the problems, and despite reassurances that the next patch will be the one to fix everything, here we are in February still trying to connect to games. On its January 23 blog, 343 Industries announced that a large update was coming that would be beta tested through the Xbox One Preview program starting that day, and posted a large FAQ concerning it. The same day the studio retracted the statement, saying, "The content update is currently undergoing additional testing prior to release to the Preview program, and will be available in the near future. However, we are no longer targeting a weekend release." In its most recent post on January 31, the developer was fairly vague as to what its plans were for the new update. Currently, it is "evaluating both timing and need for a [content update] beta with the Xbox One Preview program, as well as the final public release date in February." Who knows what's going on behind the scenes. Is this tiring episode almost over? |
Paul Robertson's Simpsons tribute is surprisingly safe for work Posted: 02 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST Paul Robertson, whose work you might have seen in games like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World or Mercenary Kings or in crazy-ass gifs like this, has teamed up with fellow animator Ivan Dixon and musician Jeremy Dower for a heartfelt pixel-art tribute to The Simpsons. It is marvelous; unquestionably good enough to be an official couch gag for the show. I've watched the video a few times since first encountering it last night and I'm still catching fresh references. The Capital City Goofball. Sir Oinks-A-Lot. Lisa dressed as Florida. So, so good. My only complaint is that there isn't a new Simpsons game being made in this style. |
Nitroplus Blasters adds four new faces to its extensive roster Posted: 02 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST Nitroplus Blasters: Heroines Infinite Duel has added some new faces to its roster, and they're pretty awesome. Saber of Fate/Zero and Ethica Kibanohara of Tokyo Necro have been announced as playable characters in the upcoming fighting game featuring Nitroplus visual novel and anime characters. In addition, Super Sonico (Nitroplus' mascot character) and Akane Tsunemori (Psycho-Pass) will be included as support. Unfortunately, the game is still relegated to Japanese arcade status, without a console release in sight. You know it'll eventually happen, though. And when it does, I'm going to be petitioning everyone to give it to us poor folks who can't read the ol' kanji. This rounds out the lineup as such: |
Noir chic is still alive with survival horror White Night Posted: 02 Feb 2015 08:45 AM PST OSome Studio, founded by industry veterans Domenico Albani and Mathieu Fremont, has been working on White Night for over two years, and its labor is about to pay off. White Night is a noir-styled survival horror game in which light and dark play a key role in gameplay. Set in 1938, you take the the role of a man who has just hit a woman with his car and been knocked out. After awaking you attempt to locate the woman, and proceed into a derelict mansion. From the trailer it's clear that something strange is afoot, and as you proceed through the mansion otherworldly beings appear. The game has been touted as a return to classic survival horror, and the trailer did evoke the same sense of panic and loneliness that I felt when playing Resident Evil or Silent Hill for the first time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this plays as good as it looks. White Night will be released on Steam for PC, Mac, and Linux, as well as PlayStation 4 on March 3, and Xbox One on March 6 for $16.99. |
Hot Take: Dying Light is loads of gory fun Posted: 02 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST Hey, this is Hot Take! It's another new Destructoid video series! New videogames come out all the time, and we want to show you what it's like to play them; think mini-Let's Plays. Our inaugural episode is Dying Light, the hot new Techland joint. There's parkour, zombies, big zombies, stinky zombies, and flying zombies. That sounds like a real GOTY contender to me! Since this is both the first episode of a new series and a field test for our new recording equipment, any feedback is extra appreciated. (To answer your questions ahead of time: yes, we did end up going to In-n-Out.) |
Call this phone number for a cryptic Hotline Miami 2 message Posted: 02 Feb 2015 08:15 AM PST The Hotline Miami Twitter account just posted this phone number: +1 (786) 519-3708 ext 10. I called it, like you do, and got a weird message, as expected. "We are 50 Blessings. Together we march ... into the future." Before I could determine whether this was a hint at a possible March (10?) release date for Hotline Miami 2, another voice said, "You have reached a wrong number." It took me a few tries to get the number to work again, so keep at it if you're having trouble. |
These first 18 minutes of Bloodborne make me feel all tingly Posted: 02 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST From Software's latest action-RPG looks to replicate the butthole-puckering tense gameplay that originated with its predecessors in the Souls series. IGN posted the first 18 minutes of gameplay (minus character creation), and it's only cemented my resolve to purchase Bloodborne. The Victorian-era setting, with wooden shanties, columned mansions, and dirty streets feels like it will present a vibrant and terrifying world that should be a blast to quest through. Luckily we don't have long to wait. Bloodborne releases March 24 exclusively for the PlayStation 4. Bloodborne: The First 18 Minutes - IGN First [IGN] |
These Mega Man keychains from Gashapon World are adorable Posted: 02 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST Mega Man fans can't get enough merch. Why? Because they have no games to spend them on! Man, it still stings, Capcom -- sell the property to Nintendo and retain your merchandising rights already! Anyway, Gashapon World has debuted these new cute Mega Man keychains, which I'm seriously considering importing. You'll find models for .EXE, Mega Man, X, the Yellow Devil, and Volnutt. Which indie studio should take on Condemned 3? Posted: 02 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST Over the weekend, Monolith Productions founder Jace Hall put it out on Facebook that he is "contemplating" setting up an independent development team with the rights to Condemned "so that they can take over the franchise and move it forward." Focused on other projects as he is right now, it's "just sitting there," and he's curious if he should "explore the idea further." (Yes.) The first-person horror series arrived as an early Xbox 360 game ahead of an eventual PC port, which holds up well to this day. Its sequel, released in 2008, was far too supernatural for its own good, but damn if that bear-chase sequence wasn't worth the trip. Both titles "did well," according to Hall, "and [he is] consistently asked when a third game might be created." In the age of Let's Plays, the time is right for a comeback. Bring on the deranged vagrants. |
Frozen Cortex gets a single-player-focused update Posted: 02 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST Frozen Cortex, the sports-esque strategy game from the Frozen Synapse developers, has recently released an Early Access update that focuses almost entirely on the single-player aspect. New modes included in this update are Knockout, a "lose and you're done" mode, Global Cortex League, which is more of a standard "career" mode, and Random League, which pits the players against randomly generated teams. The single-player narrative has also been introduced, and continues to unfold between modes. Whether players are in Knockout or Global Cortex League mode, the story will progress, giving players freedom to choose which mode they like best without missing out on the story itself. That's simply amazing. Perhaps most importantly, though, are the added customization options. Hats, faces, armor, and HATS have been added, allowing players to customize their team in both single-player and multiplayer. Robot hats? Count me in! The game is set to release from Early Access this month, and I could not be more excited! And remember: no sports knowledge or passion is required in order to fall in love with Frozen Cortex. It's just some strategy filling in a tasty strategy burrito. |
Review: Brandish: The Dark Revenant Posted: 02 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST Antiques possess a magnetic quality, an appeal to our imaginations, a false nostalgia for a time most of us are too young to remember. There's a comforting allure to these relics. They offer a window into the past, a living history. It's a connection, however tenuous, to where we came from, a place to which we've never visited or cannot return. Brandish: The Dark Revenant is an antique, something of a refurbished one. Falcom's classic role-playing game began its life as a PC release in 1991. It would later come to SNES, and was then remade in 2009 for PlayStation Portable, albeit only for Japan. Now, more than a half-decade later, a localization has finally arrived on western shores. Better late than never. |
Someone leaked more over-the-top Just Cause 3 screens Posted: 02 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST Rico Rodriguez's not a man that acts in moderation. We're not likely to see screenshots of him grabbing brunch at that great spot down the street, or hanging laundry to dry. He'd probably dry his laundry by blowing up the entire block and hoping that copious explosions did the trick. In a set of new screenshots leaked on NeoGAF but not yet released to the press, we get another sampling of his antics. Surfing on a plane while stoically staring down two helicopters? Just another day in the life of Mr. Rodriguez. Just Cause 3 - New Explosive Screenshots Revealed [NeoGAF] |
Platinum's 404 page is a cute little Bayonetta demake Posted: 02 Feb 2015 05:15 AM PST Instead of displaying a simple file-not-found message, the 404 page on Platinum Games' website holds a score-attack demake of Bayonetta. It's worth a moment of your day. The game is simplistic -- you jump and shoot at oncoming angels -- but the music's appropriate for the aesthetic and I just love the cartoonish eye bulge when Affinities get hit. Brings me back to the classic Data East series Joe & Mac. Feel free to compare high scores in the comments. Hideki Kamiya [Twitter] |
Elissa Forrester laments in the Game of Thrones Episode Two launch trailer Posted: 02 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST Game of Thrones - A Telltale Game Series: The Lost Lords is out tomorrow for Mac, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Windows, with versions for other platforms hitting later this week. To commemorate, Telltale has released a launch trailer for the episode. Where half of the last trailer was a recap of Iron From Ice, this one is all new. In the trailer, Elissa Forrester, matriarch of the Stark-lite noble house, worries about the future of the family. Indeed, after the events in the first episode, things do not look good for the clan of lumberjacks and pig farmers. Maybe things will be all sunshine and roses in Episode Two? No? Okay. Wishful thinking I guess. Destructoid's review for The Lost Lords will be available to read tonight at midnight Pacific time. |
SOE sold by Sony, sees a new dawn as Daybreak Game Company Posted: 02 Feb 2015 04:42 AM PST Sony Online Entertainment -- developer of popular MMOs such as PlanetSide 2, Everquest, and H1Z1 -- is no longer a part of Sony's stable of studios. After 20 years, SOE has been offloaded. Sony recently sold its subsidiary off to New York-based investment firm Columbus Nova. As a result of the acquisition, SOE has been rebranded as Daybreak Game Company. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. However, it has been said that all of SOE/Daybreak's existing titles will stay on the same path of development and operation. Daybreak's new-found independence likely means that the studio will start developing games for Xbox and other platforms for the first time in its history. In a press release, company president John Smedley said "We will continue to focus on delivering exceptional games to players around the world, as well as bringing our portfolio to new platforms, fully embracing the multi-platform world in which we all live." |
Source: 'Mario Party amiibo are not rare' Posted: 02 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST The Mario Party amiibo recently went up for pre-order on Amazon, including the newly minted Toad, and they sold out within minutes. "Oh great, another rare amiibo debacle," said everyone -- but that doesn't seem to be the case according to those familiar with the situation. According to a trusted source at GameStop, Nintendo was "confused" by the rush to pick up Mario Party amiibo. Nintendo reps stated that GameStop and other retailers will stock them in "abundance," and that no one should worry about not getting them on the first round of pre-orders. Toad will apparently be the "lightest allocation," but he will still not be considered "rare." Well Nintendo, it's hard to see why you'd be confused. Stock and re-orders for amiibo are being handled so poorly in the US that people don't know what to do anymore. |
Saints Row IV: Re-Elected is a prettier mash-up of aliens and sex toys Posted: 02 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST Saints Row IV is absolutely crazy. It is, without a doubt, one of the most off-the-wall sandbox experiences you can have on a console or otherwise. It's an excellent cooperative adventure as well, and it delivers the franchise’s trademark juvenile, zany humor in droves. Unfortunately, it released near the end of the previous console life cycle, so as it happens several Saints Row fans skipped it entirely or chose to wait until its eventual updated release on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, because we all knew it would probably happen. The time has finally come, as Saints Row IV: Re-Elected and the raucous President of the World is sworn in on current consoles. How is it, you ask? The short version: just as sweet as the first time around. |
Dragon Quest Heroes team interested in localization Posted: 02 Feb 2015 03:30 AM PST Speaking with Game Watch at the Taipei Game Show over the weekend, Square Enix producer Ryutaro Ichimura discussed a potential western release for Dragon Quest Heroes. “I want to proceed thinking positively,” Ichimura responded when asked about a localization. “Since we were able to announce the Chinese version in Taiwan today, seeing that reaction, I want to spread it even further around the world.” The topic of dual audio was also broached, but the development team hasn't made any decisions about that just yet. "If it’d be better to put it in, that’s something we’ll consider moving forward." Also at the interview was Koei Tecmo producer Kenichi Ogasawara, who added “If such a need is strong, we’re going to consider it.” Sounds like good news. Hopefully this comes to fruition. Dragon Quest Heroes launches across Japan on February 26 for PlayStation 4 and PS3. 「ドラゴンクエストヒーローズ」クリエイターインタビュー [Game Watch via Gematsu] |
Pokkén arcade controller resembles Wii U GamePad Posted: 02 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST Well, maybe not exactly. It's certainly no fightstick, but it's also wider than your standard controller. Even still, the setups at the Pokkén Tournament location tests are giving me serious Wii U vibes. They may be bereft of analog sticks and touch screens, but I think we all know where Nintendo and Bandai Namco are going with this, even if the studios haven't yet made it officially official. Techland says unpatched Dying Light is 'a different game' Posted: 02 Feb 2015 02:30 AM PST I wasn't blown away by any means by Dying Light, but I was very surprised that Techland managed to cobble together an open-world game that wasn't broken, and was rather fun to roam about in. Recently though the dev took to Facebook to announce that if you are playing an unpatched version, you are "playing a different game." Enhancements are said to include...well...basically everything you can think of. "Day one patch fixes" are commonplace these days, but there's something about the way Techland brazenly presented the situation that rubs me the wrong way. "Playing a different game?" Ok, so is the "other game" a broken piece of crap that shouldn't have been released? It just doesn't make sense to say that in any context. On top of that, the developer isn't doing itself any favors by making DMCA claims against its fans, and actively patching out mods. Techland gon' be Techland, I guess. Techland [Facebook] |
Posted: 02 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST I'm not a huge fan of most indie games. There I said it. I find most of them derivative and lacking in quality, and I hate when quantifying a game I have to say, "It's a great indie game," as if that fact gives it an excuse for being less engaging or of lesser quality. The duality of this is every once in a while an indie title comes around that blows my mind with how fun/clever/unique it is to the point where some of my most beloved experiences in gaming are with FTL, Out There, Little Inferno, Papers, Please, and now #IDARB. |
Here are some recommendations for Club Nintendo's new massive reward dump Posted: 02 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST Nintendo dropped a bomb on us today. A delightful digital bomb of over 100 games to download off Club Nintendo in exchange for your precious Coins. The service is gearing up for a remodel, but before then, all your Coins must go. It's going to be hard to choose with everything on offer, but here's something to make it easier. As a general rule I'm going to skip over the Wii games that aren't directly compatible with the Wii U's interface, with one exception. |
Battlefield Hardline goes all in with final beta release Posted: 02 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST It's not too often we see a major publisher humbled. With the announcement of Battlefield Hardline last year, EA and Visceral Games were ready to release another entry in the epic and grandiose Battlefield series. But soon after, they decided to hold off, and push the rather ambitious title back to 2015. After taking in its criticisms and lumps from the original beta release, they figured this was one one title they didn't want to botch. Moving the battlefield away from the military setting, Hardline brings the combat to the cities and streets across the U.S. as the police and criminals battle for control. As the first Battlefield game not set in a military conflict, the developers at Visceral Games wanted to make sure they knocked it out of the park. And in order to do so, they had to put players first and listen to what the community wanted. In a special preview session with their second upcoming beta, playable on February 3-8, EA invited Destructoid out to get some early hands-on with it, where we had a chat with Battlefield Hardline's executive producer Steve Papoutsis. During our talk, we learned what they took in from its initial beta, and how important it was to give the best of what the series is all about. |
Doc Louis's Punch-Out!! headlines Club Nintendo blowout sale, with tons of new rewards Posted: 01 Feb 2015 11:15 PM PST As I was enjoying the hunt for the Rosalina amiibo with a friend yesterday, we talked about what the new Club Nintendo would be like. But first, they have to close out their current one so we thought, "hey, wouldn't it be nice if they released all the previously exclusive Club games?" Well it looks like that wish came true, as Doc Louis's Punch-Out!!, originally on WiiWare, is now available on the service for 250 Coins. The problem is, it also broke the site. Stay patient and keep trying later in the day. It also looks like a ton of rewards have been added, both physical and digital, like Wonderful 101 for a dirt-cheap 600 Coins. Check it out! Ouya nets $10 million from Chinese investor Alibaba Posted: 01 Feb 2015 11:00 PM PST Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has sunk $10 million into Ouya, WSJ reports. According to sources familiar with the situation, Alibaba inked the deal last month with hopes of integrating the Ouya library on its set-top boxes. Ouya struck a similar agreement with Xiaomi last year, signaling a shift away from the hardware space. The startup hasn't had much success at home since its $8.6 million Kickstarter campaign, given a rather tepid reception and competition with similar (better?) devices like Amazon's Fire TV. Perhaps Ouya will fare better in its pursuit of the large, untapped Chinese market. Alibaba breathes new life into game-console maker Ouya [The Wallstreet Journal] |
