Steam's running a free weekend for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare multiplayer

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 03:00 PM PST

To jump straight to the not-so-fun part: it's a 43.5GB download for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, and the promo only covers multiplayer. Also, it lasts until Sunday, February 22 at 1:00pm Pacific.

So you can't swoop in, oggle digital Spacey, and clear the campaign like I was planning to do.

I spent too long trying to figure out that instead of searching for a "play for free" button on the game's Steam page, I should have been looking for Advanced Warfare in my library, uninstalled, all along. Yup, there it is. If you're not seeing the title in your list, try updating the Steam client.

[Update: Earlier, I wrote NIS just announced the launch window. This is because I'm dumb and bad at my job.]

Starr Mazer fully funded, plans crossover with itself

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 02:00 PM PST

Our last post about Starr Mazer was a little on the negative side, focusing on how the game's many crossovers might be a double-edged sword in regards to marketing. Maybe that idea was wrong-headed, as the game managed to hit its funding less than a day after that post went up.

With something like 40 hours left in the campaign, Starr Mazer is currently sitting at about $168K. That means it has $12K to go for "all-star musical guests," $32K for PS4 and Xbox One ports, and $42K for a Wii U version. $42K is no small chunk of change, but if half the amiibo addicts out there decided to use a fraction of their amiibucks towards this actual, honest-to-God videogame, it would get there in no time. Fat chance, right?

Maybe this latest, and arguably greatest Starr Mazer crossover will be enough to get those amiibo lovers off their amiibutts and get focused on games again. In a move that could work to both reclaim its brand and galvanize fans of everything everywhere, Imagos Softworks has announced that Starr Mazer will be crossing over with the greatest game of all -- itself.

This leaves us with many questions. Will Brick discover that he is his own worst enemy, or will he finally learn to love himself? Now that the game is fully funded, its only a matter of time before we find out.

Rodea: The Sky Soldier coming to Wii U, 3DS this fall

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 01:10 PM PST

NIS America just revealed plans to localize Rodea: The Sky Soldier for North America and Europe. You can plan to see the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U aerial action game reach western shores sometime this fall.

Rodea has an interesting development history, having been initially announced for Wii in 2010. It then virtually disappeared off the face of the earth for a few years before resurfacing in 2014 with a change of platforms.

The project comes from Prope, the indie studio helmed by former Sonic Team boss Yuji Naka, who you might recognize for its work on titles like Let's Tap, Ivy the Kiwi?, and Let's Catch.

Kadokawa Games plans to release Rodea: The Sky Soldier in Japan on April 2.

Danganronpa Another Episode heads west this fall

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 01:05 PM PST

Good news, everyone! Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls is coming west this autumn, publisher NIS America announced tonight at a press event in San Francisco.

Unlike the first pair of Danganronpa titles, between which Another Episode takes place, this entry is more action-oriented, vaunting a third-person perspective and shooting mechanics.

Spike Chunsoft released the PlayStation Vita exclusive in Japan on September 25, 2014.

Resident Evil Revelations 2 arrives next week with deals and two editions

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST

On February 25, 2015 Capcom will release Resident Evil Revelations 2 for PC in episodic format along with two editions (just to spice up the confusion level).

On Steam, there's "The Complete Season" for $24.99, and then a version just labeled Resident Evil Revelations 2 for $39.99.

When you think of a "Complete" version you think you'd get more content... but the opposite is true in this situation. The $39.99 version could more accurately be labeled as the the actual Complete Edition (vs. Season), as it comes with all the DLC extras not included in the Complete Season edition. (More on this below).

In terms of deals, we've found two retailers with decent prices for the PC version. Over at GMG, the $39.99 Resident Evil Revelations 2 is only $29.99 in its VIP Gaming sale -- just login or create an account on this page to see the discount and proceed to checkout. The cheaper "Complete Season" is only $19.50 after a 22% off coupon at GMG. Also available is a 20% discount from DLGamer, another authorized retailer.

Nazi zombies in Trials Fusion, yes, Trials Fusion

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 12:30 PM PST

Giving players the ability to create within a videogame's given boundaries has produced some real gems. Whether it be mods like Counter-Strike and DOTA or editor-focused games like Little Big Planet, providing a community with creation tools not only gives your game longevity, but also a unique creative space that's nearly unmatched in any other medium.

While the editor found in Trials Fusion is not quite Little Big Planet, it can produce some jaw-dropping levels. Case in point is the video above which brings players into a Call of Duty-inspired Nazi zombies level.

The level, called CODZ, can be found on Xbox One and you will need all the DLC available to try it.

Tingle is the heterosexual hero that gaming deserves

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 11:30 AM PST

In a recent Kotaku interview with Eiji Aonuma, the longtime Zelda producer confirmed that Tingle is, in fact, not gay. He's "just an odd person."

This isn't exactly riveting news, but it is interesting that so many people seem to be wondering about Tingle's sex life. He was even ranked as the number one gayest character in videogames by GayGamer. Of course, this is all based on stereotypes, since the games never specify his sexuality. Tingle is a self-described "fairy," which could be a slang term for homosexual men (or, you know, an actual fairy from the Zelda universe), and he has some rather flamboyant mannerisms. Some found his personality to be a distasteful gay joke, while others found him charming and were just happy to see more representation of gay characters in games.

I didn't know I needed Robot Roller-Derby Disco Dodgeball in my life

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST

I never got much into my high school's favorite rainy-day activity, dodgeball, but it was fun to half participate in, half watch. Our gym teacher would roll out carts full of fluffy, foamy, definitely-not-rubber balls and about twenty other dudes in my class would go to war for 45 minutes.

This isn't normal dodgeball, though. It's a Steam game called Robot Roller-Derby Disco Dodgeball, and it sounds much better based on this developer summary: "It plays like you enabled 'all-throwing-knife' mode in other shooters, and were all on skateboards, and at a rave."

The user reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and after an extended stay in Steam Early Access, Disco Dodgeball is out now as a finished game for Windows, Mac, and Linux for $11.99. There's a solo mode (featuring boss battles, delightfully enough), and you can also play against AI bots, but rounding up human friends and foes for bouts will surely be where the true fun emerges.

World of Tanks coming to Xbox One this year

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 10:30 AM PST

Publisher and developer Wargaming has announced that their free-to-play title World of Tanks is rumbling onto the Xbox One in 2015. As long as you're a Gold member, the game will be free to download. So, let's use the term free pretty loosely here. We haven't been given a release date, but surely it won't be too far into the year.

Anyway, the big takeaway from this announcement is that players with the new Xbox One version will be able to play against scrubs still on the Xbox 360. That's right, it will be cross-platform, suckers -- as all games should be.

By the way, if you're upgrading from the 360 to the Xbox One, your existing World of Tanks accounts and in-game progress will transfer with you. Thank you World of Tanks, that's swell.

Epic's offering $5M in grants to get devs on Unreal 4

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST

To foster a healthy ecosystem for its gaming framework, Epic needs a stable of developers that are comfortable, well-versed, and dedicated to creating games around Unreal Engine 4. A fair share of large studios build their games in Unreal, but smaller companies tend to favor Unity.

Epic's committing $5 million to hopefully turn that around. In hopes of introducing new creators to Unreal Engine 4, Epic's offering grants of anywhere between $5,000 and $50,000 to help fund development.

The deal truly comes with no string attached, apart from the obvious caveat that the game be built in Unreal Engine 4. Epic's not seeking any stake in the properties that receive grants, and developers are free to continue exploring additional methods of funding. Epic's simply investing in its own platform.

In order to apply for a grant, interested parties should email unrealdevgrants@epicgames.com, but they have to be a working prototype to be considered. While Epic's intention is to fund videogames, it'll also consider other projects such as animated features, architectural visualizations, marketplace content -- the possibilities are endless, just as long as it makes the people at Epic say "whoa." Anyone that does that might have a nice chunk of change coming their way soon.

Space shooter Captain Forever returns with weird animals and a bubblegum mutant little brother

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST

Oh, wow, Captain Forever -- that brings me back. The last person to cover it on Destructoid was Anthony Burch. (He so would.) It's a wonderful game about destroying spaceships and stealing their parts to cobble together a superior death machine. Play it for free in your browser.

I hadn't heard that Pixelsaurus Games was working on an "officially-licensed remix" until now, so I'm rushing to catch up with any and all details available, including this recent trailer.

The visual upgrade alone has me giddy. Captain Forever Remix is going for that '90s "amazing and weird cartoons" look, a style I'd love more videogames to embrace. That's my childhood, man.

Expect the game to go on sale next month through Steam Early Access. As a roguelike, it should fare better in an unfinished state than, say, completely story-driven games. But we'll have to see.

The Order: 1886's launch trailer sure looks nifty

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST

Well, I don't know what to believe anymore. This trailer has explosions, lycanthropes, and action up the wazoo. Everything looks so pretty, and the mustaches look real enough that I'm trying to pet them through my computer screen.

But, Chris' review (and most others) say that it's a middling game. BUT, the trailer makes it look like an awesome game! Who's right? I don't know. I'm going to go eat a burrito and think about how hard my life is.

Bloodborne's story trailer most certainly does not have a soothing presence

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST

The lady in Bloodborne's story trailer needs to learn what soothing means. A mug of warm cocoa on a cold winter night is soothing. The sound of the tide rolling in and out is soothing. A demon hunter doing his best to not get ripped limb from limb by ferocious, overly aggressive beasts is not soothing, lady.

Stylish endless snowboarder Alto's Adventure now on iPhone and iPad

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST

It's rare that I cover mobile games here but I couldn't let Alto's Adventure slide by me.

This is pegged as an "endless snowboarding odyssey" with a one-button trick system and 180 goals to best. Other things worth noting besides the strong art direction: there aren't in-app purchases, only the up-front $1.99 price tag, and you can unlock a wingsuit. Love those.

On the prospect of Android or Steam or console versions, developer Snowman says "it's an incredible feeling" to even be asked that question. "At this time we can't comment on any of it really, other than we're listening to what you guys are saying :)." Smiley face, huh? Gotcha.

Tim Schafer comments on the Molyneux interview

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST

In a YouTube video posted by Double Fine Productions, founder and CEO Tim Schafer provided an update on the current state of the point-and-click adventure Broken Age's second and final act. Schafer also took time at the end of the video to share his thoughts concerning his friend and industry veteran Peter Molyneux's recent run-in with the gaming press.

Regarding the events surrounding Molyneux's interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun's John Walker, Schafer had this to say: "We've seen some extremely rough treatment of Peter on the Internet and on the games press. I think it's really unfortunate and unfair and I don't think it's healthy. Obviously, things did not go as expected on his game and because of that people are making some nasty accusations about Peter -- and I can relate to that, believe it or not.

I'm not saying developers like Peter and I shouldn't be responsible and shouldn't be accountable for deadlines -- I am just saying the reaction to recent events and the tone of that reaction are really way out of proportion to the seriousness of the events themselves."

Very Quick Tips: Pokémon Shuffle

Pokémon Shuffle has an under-handed microtransaction system that heavily relies on making you wait to play, unless you pay.

But for some of you, casually picking up five games per day will be enough, and there is some fun to be had when you wade through all the bullshit. Here are some tips to help you stay free.

Laura's Gaming Butts: M-ass-ter Chief

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST

Hello all and welcome to Laura's Gaming Butts, Destructoid's new weekly YouTube show about butts in videogames. Yep, it's a video podcast where I get guests in to talk about butts. Professional journalism at its finest.

This week we're joined by Patrick Dane, gaming editor at Bleeding Cool. From Cortana's holographic cheeks to the mystery armor on Grunt behinds, we get to the very center of the butts of the Halo series. Now, sit back and enjoy some butts.

Finally, a Sonic Runners trailer with all gameplay

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 03:30 AM PST

"It looks good if the microtransactions don't ruin it." Why do I get my hopes up for Sonic games? Am I part of the dreaded "Sonic Cycle?" Sometimes. Every so often DIMPS or Sonic Team will crank out a good game like Generations, so I give them all a fair shake.

Sonic Runners is the newest entry in the series that looks like it might not be terrible but very well could be. Based on the gameplay it doesn't look all that bad, but let's see how the microtransaction scheme will permeate throughout. Based on this screenshot I took, it looks like there's a "lives" section in the upper right-hand corner, which sure feels like "energy."

Runners is set to release sometime this year on iOS and Android.

Nintendo Download: Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST

The Wii U has a bit of eShop life this week with Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, which looks all sorts of cute. It's also getting a Citizens of Earth demo and Axelay, one of my personal favorite SNES shoot-'em-ups.

The 3DS is getting Pokémon Shuffle, which, sadly, does not make good use of the free-to-play scheme. I'm slowly making my way through it now because of the limited playtime, but you can read about my initial impressions here, or download it yourself. Also on the 3DS you can find the Citizens of Earth demo, as well as Adventure Bar Story, Excave, Flap Flap, Fishdom, and 4Elements.

Theatrhyhtm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call is getting some DLC this week, with tracks from Chrono Trigger and Nier. A new 3DS theme is also out entitled "NES: Ice Climbers."

Are you feeling these New 3DS Xenoblade Face Plates?

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 02:30 AM PST

Since Americans are a confused people and can't understand the difference between XL and "not XL," Nintendo opted to not release the latter in the US. Many fans are upset because they don't get to take advantage of the wide range of Face Plates that come with the smaller model, and after seeing this Xenoblade Chronicles plate, I can see why.

Nintendo recently debuted this badass Monado themed red plate on its site, which will launch near the release of the game in April for 2,000 Yen.

Homeworld Remastered Collection trailer shows off sexy-voiced cultist or something

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST

All right, I'll admit it: I know almost nothing about Homeworld. After reading the plot synopsis on Wikipedia (yeah journalism!), I got the gist of how things go, but with all of the alien races involved I can't really place who the people in the trailer above are supposed to be.

All I know is that while the little ship was slowly orbiting the other, checking it out, and giving its best smooth jazz radio DJ voice, I was expecting to learn how baby spaceships are made. Things did not turn out exactly as I thought. Or maybe they did, if the swarm of tiny, orange-tailed ships that shoot out of the big, skinny one at the end are any indication.

Homeworld Remastered Collection is set to release on February 25. That's next week!

It looks like the Xbox One is getting screenshot support in March

Posted: 19 Feb 2015 01:30 AM PST

If you've been wanting to take screenshots on Xbox One, you only have to wait until March to do so. You can post screens to social media or to the unit itself, and it's easily done by tapping the home button twice or using the Kinect -- which instantly takes the screen. A little less cumbersome than the Share button for me in theory.

With the recent Upload Studio update you can also make all flashy-like or set it as your background. In addition to screens you can also report spam messages, another curious basic addition that hasn't been implemented yet.

Expect all this in March.

Review: The Order: 1886

Posted: 18 Feb 2015 11:01 PM PST

The Order: 1886 opens up in a fairly gritty fashion -- a first-person sequence involving a near drowning, by way of water torture. It begins with a bang, thrusting you into this unknown, and frankly frightening world where half-breed creatures live among humans.

It's cinematic and gripping, and draws you into the world that Ready at Dawn and Sony have crafted together. But it doesn't really push the envelope from there, as the cinematic angle is prevalent in nearly every facet of the experience, often hindering gameplay.
