| Rare North Dakota-themed Carmen Sandiego game has surfaced Posted: 18 Feb 2015 02:00 PM PST In the late '80s the Carmen Sandiego series was immensely popular and over 20 states were looking to get in on that red hot edutainment action. Details are sketchy on exactly what happened, but Where in North Dakota is Carmen Sandiego was the only state-specific entry Brøderbund ever produced. The game was developed in conjunction with the North Dakota Department of Education. It came with a full lesson plan, comprising of the double-sided Carmen Sandiego floppy, a North Dakota state almanac on floppy, a binder with info on the game, a printed version of the almanac, and a teacher's guide. Another binder comprising 18 floppies and printed exercises completed the package. According to the in-game copyright date, it was released in 1989, the state's centennial. Gameplay followed the same pattern as the others in the Carmen Sandiego series, albeit with a North Dakotan theme. Around 5,000 copies were produced exclusively for schools, but due to computer upgrades over the years, many of the Apple IIs and their floppies have been lost to landfills. Recently Where in North Dakota is Carmen Sandiego was located and preserved on Asimov's Apple II FTP along with many other obscure edutainment titles. They've even got Math Blaster! | Australians, you can get the New 3DS XL for 20% off Posted: 18 Feb 2015 01:45 PM PST Australia, the land of overpriced videogames actually gets a break this week with Target offering a 20% off voucher code on its Target eBay store front (use voucher code CTARGET20 at checkout). This means the New 3DS XL gets a 20% off from the AU $229 price tag to only AU $183, while the non-XL version of the New 3DS also gets a cut from the AU $197 list price to AU $157 (aka non-existent version in USA). The deal of course works on PS4 and Xbox Ones too, but the rare and noteworthy deal goes to Nintendo's latest handled. The New 3DS XL has already sold out once already (but it's now back in stock as of writing), so we'd act fast if you really want one. As for those in the US running the conversion math -- we wouldn't bother as shipping is restricted to only Australia. The deal works on all the games you see at Target's eBay storefront too. Just click "Games" on the left sidebar under "Games & Consoles" to see all the game selection. The voucher expires February 22 at 23.59 AEST. You're also limited to five transactions per person during the promotion period and a max of $200 in discount per transaction. We're fairly certain the 3DS XL and other popular hardware will sell out before Sunday. |
| Posted: 18 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST This is vaguely the same footage of Pokkén Tournament we've seen over the past couple weeks, but it's a direct capture of the game, so what the hell. Good recap of the current roster, though do note that the voice over and text are in Japanese. Long way to go before this'll get localized. What's going on with Pikachu (starting at 1:25)? That expression is Kirby-in-the-USA angry. |
| Early Access game The Stomping Land may be extinct Posted: 18 Feb 2015 12:30 PM PST In another Kickstarter heartbreaker, it seems as though The Stomping Land is stuck in the tar pits. After a very successful crowdfunding campaign in June 2013 totaling $114,060, it was released on Steam Early Access almost a year later in May 2014. Although there have been several updates for the game since then, no content or patches have been added since October. In a forum post last month, The Stomping Land's lead artist Vlad Konstantinov announced he had temporarily frozen all work on the game due to losing contact with lead developer Alex Fundora. Konstantinov stated the last message he received from Fundora was in December, and he and the texture artist were owed money for completed work. Since then, it's been discovered Konstantinov has gone on to start work on another project. This isn't the first time Fundora has gone silent. The developer disappeared from late May until August before returning to inform the fanbase The Stomping Land would be transitioning to Unreal Engine 4. After the announcement, the game was temporarily unavailable for sale on Steam, but at some point sales were reinstated and the game can still be purchased for $24.99. As it is, the game is glitchy, it's missing features, and it's far from a completed product. Unfortunately, Kickstarter is offering little assistance other than apologies. One backer, who pledged $90, detailed its response to his inquiries about receiving a refund in the game's forums. As of the posting of this article Alex Fundora has not made any statement. | Posted: 18 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST Typically, board games involving just dice aren't my thing. I don't like playing a game in which I feel I have no control in whether I win or lose. Yahtzee is a prime example of this, while Risk is somewhere in between. Much like Monopoly, you do have to have some sort of strategy most of the time. However, because these games are so dependent on chance, those strategies often get thrown out the window. With Ubisoft's newly released Risk for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, this is basically what you get. You can plan and plot as much as you want, but if Lady Luck isn't on your side, then you aren't going to win -- no matter what you do. |
| Hand of Fate mixes deckbuilding with action combat Posted: 18 Feb 2015 11:30 AM PST It's always fun to see what new mashups developers can come up with. Hand of Fate combines a card game with third-person action combat. Sure, why not? It calls itself a deck-builder, though it isn't entirely clear from the trailer or the description whether it is a collectible card game-style deck-builder (a la Magic: The Gathering) or if it follows the more current definition of the term. Regardless of how exactly the deck is built, cards are used as an abstract dungeon layout where the player's pawn moves to uncover various combat scenarios. The viewpoint switches to third-person, where cards also act as the player's abilities. Sounds neat, though a little hard to grasp at first. Hand of Fate is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. |
| Developer Giant Spacekat exits PAX East due to threats Posted: 18 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST The embarrassment caused by a certain faction of the gaming space continues to make things terrible for just about everyone. Because some keyboard warriors refuse to see reason and behave with basic human decency, developer Giant Spacekat is withdrawing from PAX East. Founder Brianna Wu, who has experienced hell in the wake of GamerGate, said that the threats haven't stopped or died down. In fact, they seem to be getting worse. The company had this to say in its press release related to the matter: |
| Surprise! Kids are annoying and god awful at Super Meat Boy Posted: 18 Feb 2015 10:30 AM PST Look, I hate these posts as much as the next guy, alright? Kids. Yuck. Some people devote their lives to raising these little piles of germs with suspect motor skills. Even my dumb parents were foolish enough to fall into that trap. Suckers. But, it seems like the perfect opportunity to boast about my Golden God status in Super Meat Boy (one of the first pieces I ever wrote for Destructoid, by the way). So, yeah. I'm kind of superior to all of these kids in every conceivable way. Also, Darren thinks one of those children looks like a gross teen version of me. Please remove Darren from your Christmas card mailing list, and throw glass bottles when you see him in public. Mucho apreciado. |

| In the world of Sorcerer King everything is terrible Posted: 18 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST This turn-based fantasy/strategy with city-building elements is super enjoyable. Even in Steam Early Access, it's got a surprising amount of polish, more so than several AAA games I can think of. I have encountered no gamebreaking bugs, and the main problems right now seem to be stat balance and unimplemented art. If you enjoyed the RPG elements of Heroes of Might and Magic and the city-building of Civilization, there's a lot to like in this game's eclectic blend of gameplay. However, if turn-based gameplay isn't really your thing, Steam's $39.99 price tag may be a bit too steep. |
| Grow Home update brings a new side quest, tons of bug fixes Posted: 18 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST Thank goodness Ubisoft Reflections' little robot adventure turned out well. That could've been such a letdown. Reviewing Grow Home for Destructoid, Ben Davis said he "got more than enough enjoyment out of exploring the world, free falling through the vines, and watching BUD be all adorable and weird." But more stuff would be good so long as the developers are up for it. Today's free update on Steam adds:
There are also numerous bug fixes included. Need to get on this soon. Grow Home Update 1 - Feb 18th 2015 [Steam] |
| Greedy Guns fires out fast-paced metroidvania action Posted: 18 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST Independent developers have really been delivering with metroidvanias lately, though with titles like Chasm or Paradise Lost on the horizon, it seems like they lean toward slow, methodical gameplay. Greedy Guns goes in the other direction, bringing frantic gunplay to the genre. From the trailer, it looks pretty dang fun. With fast gameplay, colorful environments, and two-player cooperative play, it almost makes me think of Guacamelee!, but with mercenaries instead of luchadores and guns instead of fists. Greedy Guns has already made it through the Steam Greenlight process and is planned to release on Linux, Mac, and Windows. No release date has been given. |
| STARWHAL brings neon space narwhals to PS3, PS4 next week Posted: 18 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST When I last wrote about STARWHAL, it still had the subtitle "Just the Tip." That's since been jettisoned. The floppy local multiplayer game about narwhals in space has made it on to Steam proper, and it's hitting up PS3 and PS4 on February 24, 2015. There's pay-once-for-both pricing ($11.99), but the PS3 version only runs at 30 frames per second (PS4 runs at 60). For the PlayStation Network release, "[c]razy new modes, intense new arenas, sweet new visual effects, a massive, extended, thumping soundtrack, and over 9,000 costume combinations" await, according to designer Mike Keogh. Think I saw one resembling the Spiny Shell from Mario Kart. Love the weird stuff that makes it out of game jams. STARWHAL Flops onto PS4, PS3 February 24th [PlayStation Blog] |
| Nerdist's spoof Star Fox trailer reminds me of the old Nintendo Power comic Posted: 18 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST
Star Fox is possibly the most under-appreciated Nintendo series. It's had games cancelled, been snubbed entirely for a whole console generation, and hasn't received an original entry since 2006 (although an untitled Star Fox game is in the works for Wii U). However, Fox fans can rejoice with this zany trailer from Nerdist, featuring real-life animals playing the role of the Star Fox team. I think a live-action Star Fox movie given the Guardians of the Galaxy treatment would be awesome. This trailer also reminded me of the comics that ran in Nintendo Power when the first game came out. It had a killer art style and was a unique look at the picture Nintendo might have had in mind for the original series continuity before the cancellation of Star Fox 2 and the Nintendo 64 remake was released. Unfortunately, the Star Fox comics have not been reprinted, although you can find them online in their entirety. However, Viz has announced a collected edition of the A Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past comics that ran in Nintendo Power due out in May! | If this is what a 'rhythm violence' game looks like, I'm all about them Posted: 18 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST While watching this trailer for THUMPER, a self-described rhythm violence game from current Harmonix artist Brian Gibson and former lead programmer Marc Flury, I didn't want to blink. I also let out a confused "what?" followed by an even more puzzled "what the fuck?!" during the clip. The protagonist is a space beetle barreling down hallucinatory tracks, and I get that scraping against walls is a bad idea -- but otherwise I'm not comprehending what we're looking at here. On the website, that devilish beast shown toward the end is described as "an insane giant head from the future." The game is headed to "whatever platforms make sense," so, probably PC. |
| Posted: 18 Feb 2015 06:51 AM PST The amiibo situation gets crazier with each passing wave. The running joke among the community is that every figure will be rare in Wave 4. You know what? That could happen. Based on an internal memo that just went out nationally to GameStop, a few provisos are in effect for some characters. Ike will apparently be fulfilled in two waves. If you ordered him before December 26, 2014 (wow!), you will likely get your pre-order this week. If you didn't nab him until after that time, your order may be delayed into spring. You will likely get a call stating that your figure is in, but even if you have multiple paid pre-orders, GameStop will not honor more than one per household. Major bummer for people who have multiple children -- I even pre-ordered an extra myself for a colleague. King Dedede will also be fulfilled in multiple sessions. He will be at most stores on Wednesday, February 25 if you ordered before December 30, 2015, but for the rest of you, expect him in summer. Mega Man and Sonic orders will all be fulfilled, and should be in by next Wednesday. I have independently verified the authenticity of the memo with a source. Plan accordingly, and pre-order Wave 4 as soon as you can, since GameStop is prioritizing people who ordered this wave two months ago. |
| This is how it all went wrong in Killing Floor Posted: 18 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST Ever wonder how the gruesome monsters of Killing Floor came to be? Those type of horrors don't just come around one day because the school system's supposed to be really good and the area just got a new Trader Joe's. No, something has to go terribly wrong. Tripwire Interactive helped put together Killing Floor: Uncovered, a 10-minute live action origin story for the franchise. There's a bioweapon mishap, some grainy security cam footage, and an elevator that'll make you say "Ehhh, you know what? I think I'll just take the stairs." |
| True Life: One man's descent into deliriumiibo Posted: 18 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST It's 11 p.m. on a Tuesday night, and I sit at my laptop writing. That's a half-truth; the bulk of my time is spent on a large retailer's website refreshing a page for a children's toy. Sorry, "collector's figure." F5, F5, one poorly thought-out sentence, F5 -- repeat ad nauseam, and I ain't gettin' sick of this anytime soon. Not when amiibo are on the line. I was having a great night. I was over at a friend's playing music, talking, laughing. You know, acting like a social creature. Well-adjusted, and all that. That all changed when I pulled up reddit to see a thread informing anyone and (unfortunately) everyone that King Dedede was finally available on Target's site. If you've lived this nightmare, you know how the story it goes. Any time lost is an amiibo lost. By the time I reacted, I was met with the unsightly message telling me that the product is "not sold online." Bullshit. It's just not sold online to me. I immediately left my friend's place. I had to be in the comforting glow of my computer monitor. I needed to be in my safe place where all my cookies are saved and my accounts are logged into. |
| $349 PlayStation 4 available from NewEgg on eBay Posted: 18 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST Here's a random Wednesday morning hot deal. NewEgg is offering the PlayStation 4 for $349.99 with free shipping. We're not sure why it's giving a discount today, but perhaps it's a sale for Chinese/Lunar New Year? (NBD, just a few billion people in various countries celebrating.) Besides the deal from NewEgg, PayPal Digital's store on eBay is also offering $50 worth of PlayStation Network credit for only $40. This is a digital code that will be sent to you within 10 minutes of your purchase (unless you frequently launder money via a car wash business, in which case your order may get flagged and delayed). Both deals carry no expiration date, but we suspect they will run out of stock within 48 hours. |
| Starr Mazer has gradually turned into a massive crossover Posted: 18 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST At last count, the Smash Bros. series has featured characters from 21-24 different series. That number fluctuates depending on if you count R.O.B. as part of a "series" and if you think of Super Mario, Donkey Kong, and Wario Land as different franchises. Regardless, Smash Bros. is easily one of the largest crossovers ever attempted in gaming. It took a while for it to get there though. The first entry in the series only drew from nine different franchises. Starr Mazer isn't so shy. The game isn't even out yet and it has already announced that it will cross over with 12 other Intellectual Properties (Galak-Z, Crossing Souls, Thoughtstronauts, Paradise Lost, Aegis Defenders, Detective Case and Clown Bot, Orion Trail, Shovel Knight, Legend of Dungeon, Sky Rogue, Children of Morta, and Hyper Light Drifter), almost all of which were crowdfunded. That's on top of the announcement that game music culture icon Mega Ran will appear in the game as a character based on himself. From where I stand, this cameo cavalcade may have hurt and helped the game's image in equal measure. When I first heard about Starr Mazer, it was the concept (seamlessly meshed shmup action with point-and-click mechanics) that got me excited for it. Then I saw how beautiful the game looked and sounded, and I was sold completely. Both of the style and the concept for the game may have been overshadowed by all of the cameos, which is a shame. Hopefully it will all work out in the end. Overshadowing or not, these cameos are pretty darn cool. If used tactfully, they'll only work to accentuate the game's core concepts of wild adventure and unbridled imagination. I'm not too worried about that, as the gang at Imagos Softworks definitely knows what they're doing. If anything, I'm worried that those console stretch goals won't happen. I was really looking forward to playing Starr Mazer on a handheld. |
| I bet you'd like some Predator in your Mortal Kombat X Posted: 18 Feb 2015 04:45 AM PST If you see a tell-tale shimmer in Mortal Kombat X come June, you should be concerned. It only means that the perfect hunting specimen is after you, and there's a good chance that death is mere seconds away -- even for the fearless likes of Reptile and Scorpion. That is, if a recent rumor proves true that Predator will be added to Mortal Kombat X as a downloadable character. Videogamer.com reports that a June add-on will include both Predator and CIA agent Colonel Al Dillon, played by Actor Carl Weathers. Weathers is said to be offering his likeness to the game. Mortal Kombat X releases on April 15, meaning that there'll be two months between the base game and this DLC. If everything pans out, Mortal Kombat will somehow get even more deadly. At least you can take solace knowing that your inevitable won't be completely for naught; your skull will have a final resting place in a trophy case alongside all of Predator's other unfortunate victims. | Shadowrun Online gets major Early Access update Posted: 18 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST "Watch your back. Shoot straight. Conserve ammo. And never, ever cut a deal with a dragon." Hoi, Chummers! The eighth Early Access update for Shadowrun Online just went live yesterday and it's a massive one. Major features include the drone-controlling Rigger as a playable class and the eagerly-anticipated ability to create and customize our own Runners. Metatypes available in the current build include Human, Elf, Troll, Orc, and Dwarf. If you're unfamiliar with Shadowrun Online, that's really not all that surprising. It doesn't get near the amount of press coverage Harebrained Schemes' Shadowrun games do, but I don't think that's what Cliffhanger Productions is after at this point. Instead of dedicating time and resources to pitching the game to enthusiast websites, it's been quietly at work in the shadows, building what may turn out to become the definitive Shadowrun videogame experience. I've been playing the Early Access version of the game for quite a while now and it just keeps getting better and better with each new update. Sure, it's a little rough around the edges in places. Being a work-in-progress, it's obviously not yet feature complete -- but what the developers have implemented truly shines. Think pen-and-paper Shadowrun crossed with functionality and ease of use of XCOM: Enemy Unknown's turn-based system; throw in the ability to play online with your friends, and you have a pretty good idea of what they've got going on. |
| Review: Kirby and the Rainbow Curse Posted: 18 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST Let's take a quick look at the history of videogames with clay-based graphics. Skullmonkeys is a one-off that most people don't even remember. The ClayFighter series has been dormant since the N64 days. Armikrog has been in development hell for years. That clay-based Loco Roco game for the PlayStation 3 never happened. Maybe worst of all, Dominique Pamplemouse is not yet a million seller. What the heck, guys!? Looking at how few clay-focused games have made it to the market makes Kirby and the Rainbow Curse an even more interesting part of Nintendo's overall strategy. It's both safe and risky at the same time. This is not Kirby's first foray into the world of arts and crafts, and Nintendo has toyed with the idea of clay graphics before. The cover art for the first and last issues of Nintendo Power were made from clay, and a lot of the promotional material from EarthBound used clay models. It's clear that Nintendo has been toying with clay for a while, but Kirby and the Rainbow Curse is the first time it has finally gone all the way clay. I hope it's not the last. |
| Hotline Miami 2 digital comic series free on Steam Posted: 18 Feb 2015 03:30 AM PST Devolver Digital and Dennaton Games have teamed up with Italian art collective Dayjob Studio to bring you an early taste of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number in delicious, digital comic book form. The free, five-part comic series digs into the backstory of the brutal events of the first game and introduces some of the new playable characters and factions that will appear in the gore-encrusted sequel, due to release in Q1 2015. Each comic is viewable in the application on Steam and readers can turn through the digital pages as select music from the game's soundtrack plays in the background. The remaining three issues will be updated to the application leading up to the release of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number Digital Comic Series [Steam] |
| Posted: 18 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST What a busy year this is going to be for Atlus. With the release of Persona 5 in the coming months, there are a lot of expectations for what's ahead with the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. In order to keep fans satiated till then, the publisher is offering another dose of MegaTen with a revisit to another much-loved title. Just last month, Atlus released the follow-up to Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 in Japan. As an updated version of the Nintendo DS's Devil Survivor 2, the new 3DS release will have players re-experiencing the events of the original game along with a new story to unfold. Though fans in the west were left wondering about the fate of its release on this end, all we got was a vague confirmation that it was coming with no concrete date set. Fortunately during a special hands-on session hosted by Atlus, the publisher has now revealed plans for the western release of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker on May 5, 2015. Now on a new system, this ultra-quirky and devilishly difficult take on the MegaTen formula will get players to experience Devil Survivor 2 in a fresh way. |
| Race through ten Chipzel songs on a laser track in Spectra Posted: 18 Feb 2015 02:30 AM PST "F-Zero meets Audiosurf" brings some vivid imagery to mind, but after watching the above trailer, I'm not sure I agree with that tagline for the indie racer Spectra. Sure, it's set to some bumpin' Chipzel tracks, but it looks like levels are designed rather than procedurally generated, and there does not appear to be any music importing. The aesthetic is also more reminiscent of something like Tempest than F-Zero. Still, Spectra looks pretty cool. It is currently available for Windows and Windows Phone, and there releases planned for more popular smartphone operating systems, as well as Xbox One. It's curious that it leans so heavily toward Microsoft platforms; if you look closely, the rocket ship the player controls heavily resembles a certain Nintendo handheld of years past... |
| Mortal Kombat X will not have a demo, all dev time is spent on the final product Posted: 18 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST If you wanted a demo for Mortal Kombat X, prepare to be disappointed. Creator Ed Boon took to Twitter to answer fan questions, and during that session he confirmed that there will not be a demo for the game at all. Producer Shaun Himmerick elaborated, stating that instead of focusing on a demo, they wanted to make the launch version better. He also went on to say that we will be getting a new character reveal trailer soon. Finally, Himmerick confirmed that the Season Pass (called the Kombat pack) will consist of four "full characters" and five skin packs (15 skins). Ed Boon [Twitter] |
| Sin and Punishment 2 and Pandora's Tower come out next month for Wii U in Japan Posted: 18 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST Sin and Punishment: Star Successor and Pandora's Tower are two of my favorite Wii games, and now they're coming to the Wii U eShop. As per Nintendo's YouTube channel they will both be arriving next month in Japan -- the former has a March 25 date, with the latter coming earlier on March 4. Both games support the Classic Controller, in case you were wondering. |
| Bladestorm: Nightmare will hit Steam in May Posted: 18 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST In addition to the PS3, PS4, and Xbox One in March, it looks like the upcoming Bladestorm: Nightmare will be arriving on Steam in May. Nightmare is an expansion and semi-sequel of sorts to the original game, complete with new content, costumes, and "Nightmare" -- a new story with an evil Joan of Arc, dragons, and wizards. It sounds amazing. For those of you who have always wanted to try a Warriors type game but can never pay full price, a Steam sale may be in the cards for you. Koei Tecmo Europe [Twitter] |
