Star Fox X Regular Show Tribute Posted: 16 Feb 2015 02:00 PM PST [StarfooooooOOOHHHH by ガしガし] The fact that a new Star Fox game is set for release this year still feels a little surreal. Fan expectations are bound to be high, as the wait for this one has been long and hard. That's may seem like a bad thing for Nintendo, as they have a lot to lose if the game stinks, but the fact that people still care enough about this little 3D shmup series is something to be grateful for. Instead of eventually fading away, it looks like Star Fox might be more popular than ever. That's certainly how it appears on certain areas of the internet, where Fox-related Smash Bros. memes, "Do a Barrel Roll" references and other related Star Fox fan happenings are still at a high. You'd think that anthropomorphic animals would eventually go out of style, but if Rocket Raccoon, Regular Show and that gosh darn Lucario amiibo are any indication, the public's fascination with furry talking friends isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Upon limited inspection, it was easy to discover that there is already a sizable crossover between Star Fox and Regular Show fans in particular. If you are one of those crossover fans, this video is for you.
Xbox One's video editor adds green-screen effects and more in big update Posted: 16 Feb 2015 11:30 AM PST Thank you, Xbox One Upload Studio, for not being conducive to good, readable header images. It's been four days since Holmes asked our staff to slip this picture of Ron Perlman into a post, and with each passing day I've felt greater guilt that it's gone untouched. That ends now. With today's Xbox One update, the console's video editor can handle up to 15 recorded segments for a final run time of up to 30 minutes. There are more options available, from transitions, title cards, effects, splash screens, and templates to text overlays and voice-overs. Don't go overboard with that stuff, but do go overboard with the new green-screen effects.
| Sony appears to have 'abandoned' its trademark for The Last Guardian Posted: 16 Feb 2015 10:45 AM PST Waiting to finally see more of Sony’s elusive The Last Guardian? You may be in for some disappointing news in the near future, as one eagle-eyed NeoGAF user discovered Sony has opted not to extend its trademark for The Last Guardian. According to the official listing that can be found here via the office of patent and trademark in the United States, the trademark has been “abandoned” because “no Statement of Use or Extension Request timely filed after Notice of Allowance was issued.” It’s important to note, however, Sony also did the same thing with its previous trademark for the same game before. But wait! Let's not forget that Sony just went and confirmed that The Last Guardian was still in development as of last August. This “abandonment” could very well mean that Sony’s simply gone with a new name for the game, or they’re planning on something else they haven’t quite yet shared. Whatever the case is, I sure wish they’d do something with the game or the name already. It’s starting to get a little frustrating at this point playing the old “will they or won’t they” game. | The Dtoid community's best blogs of January 2015 Posted: 16 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST [The amazing Cblog Recaps team brings us a month's worth of Topsauces it thinks are worth another look for us! Want to you your stuff reach the front page? Join the community and start blogging! --Striderhoang] Just before we got the end-of-year recaps out for 2014, the thought struck me that monthly recaps might be a great addition to the usual Destructoid community blog recaps. Doing the 2014 recap was an interesting experience -- I got to see how my writing changed over the year, revisited favorite posts by other users, and saw some great blogs that went unnoticed or under-appreciated. |
Terraria: Otherworld trailer shows an alternate dimension to the sandbox Posted: 16 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST Whoa. What's this? A new game in the Terraria universe? I have just recently been getting back into the similar-but-unrelated Starbound, so this is especially interesting news right about now. Re-Logic released the above alpha footage trailer, and has a smattering of information on the official site and the Terraria forums. There isn't a whole lot to glean from the trailer for Terraria: Otherworld. There is a strange glowing robot/mech/monolith, and everything looks simultaneously darker and more richly colored. Check out that logo. Re-Logic made it clear that this is "not Terraria 2," but instead is a slightly different type of sandbox game set in an alternate dimension to the original. There is mention of a "band of survivors," which could hint to some sort of squad-based tactics, or could just be a slight tweak on the original's villagers. The official site hints that Terraria: Otherworld combines the classic sandbox gameplay with strategy and role-playing elements. The original also had pieces that could go by those descriptions, so it might be wise to keep the hype in check, but that may be difficult considering how cool a Terraria strategy-RPG could be. Terraria: Otherworld is set to release for Mac and Windows in the future. The team is also thinking about PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases, but has not made a final decision on them.
Nintendo predicted the amiibo shortage 11 years ago Posted: 16 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST A lot of folks were surprised at last fall's amiibo launch, and how scarce some of the figures were. They shouldn't have been; Nintendo gave them a heads-up almost 11 years ago. The intro for the Game Boy Advance's Mario vs. Donkey Kong shows even the famed ape unable to get his hands on these elusive collectibles. Damn you, Mario Toy Company! This has been your intention all along!
Review: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy+ Posted: 16 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST Japanese publishers have some truly confusing localization titles sometimes. In 2011, Namco Bandai released Ace Combat: Assault Horizon for the PS3 and Xbox 360. It was a gritter take on the franchise that added real-world complexities to the established fictional formula, released to mixed reception. For some reason in that same year Namco Bandai also dropped Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy (the legacy is important, you see), which was basically a remake of 1997's Ace Combat 2 for the Nintendo 3DS. Now they've added a "plus" on the end and added amiibo support. It still has nothing to do with Ace Combat: Assault Horizon.
David Wise and Grant Kirkhope join Project Ukulele Posted: 16 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST I need to take some deep breaths here. Former Rare developers are creating a spiritual successor to "those fondly remembered platforming adventures we built in the past," and they've brought on Grant Kirkhope, David Wise, and Steve Burke to contribute music to the project. The soundtracks to Donkey Kong Country (Wise) and Banjo-Kazooie (Kirkhope) rank among my favorites in all of gaming. Magical. And while I have painful memories of my launch-day Xbox 360 struggling to run Kameo: Elements of Power without red-ringing, Burke's score was pleasant. I'm trying not to expect too much from Project Ukulele, but that's not going so well. They are the music men [Playtonic Games]
Senran Kagura creator's IA/VT Colorful drops in June Posted: 16 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST Vocaloid rhythm game IA/VT Colorful has a new Japanese release date, Famitsu reveals. The new project from Senran Kagura creator Kenichiro Takaki is now set to debut June 25 on PlayStation Vita. Marvelous initially planned to release the title last June, but it wound up being delayed on multiple occasions amidst quality concerns. Akin to Sega's Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA series, IA/VT Colorful stars virtual idol IA in a rhythmic "sound catching" game with kaleidoscopic visuals and 60+ tracks from various Vocaloid artists. A western release has yet to be confirmed, but this type of game is fairly import-friendly. 【先出し週刊ファミ通】『IA/VT -COLORFUL-(イア ビジュアルトラックス カラフル)』“IA”が歌い、躍動する注目タイトルの発売日が決定(2015年2月19日発売号) [Famitsu]
PSA: You still might be able to snag a Meta Knight amiibo Posted: 16 Feb 2015 07:12 AM PST [Update: As of right now, the button to purchase simply says "Coming soon." That means you should definitely keep an eye out!] The never-ending amiibo hunt rolls on. Right now, Meta Knight's one of the hottest figures around, as it goes on sale at Best Buy on Friday, February 20. The first wave of pre-orders has been long sold out, so Meta Knight figures to be a relatively sought-after amiibo, especially considering that it's a Best Buy exclusive. Chris outlined a strategy to maybe snag one in stores come Friday morning. While that could work, there may be an easier solution. Meta Knight's been going in and out of stock on Best Buy's website this afternoon. Keep refreshing the page, and there's a good chance it might pop up again soon. It's not the most fool-proof or reassuring of methods, but even a slim chance is worth gambling on for hard-pressed amiibo collectors. Meta Knight [Best Buy]
Harmonix releasing more Rock Band DLC, a couple of 'we're back' songs Posted: 16 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST In mid-January, Harmonix surprised everyone by breaking its radio silence on Rock Band with the first set of downloadable songs in almost two years. While it's not quite the return to weekly DLC, Harmonix looks to be back on the horse with the announcement of another set of playable tracks. On February 17, "Back to the Shack" from Weezer and "Rize of the Fenix" from Tenacious D will grace the Rock Band library on Xbox 360 and PS3. Each song will be sold for the usual price of $1.99. As users in the Harmonix forums and Twitter noted, the songs have a thematic similarity in that they're both about a return to form after a long absence. If everyone's not seeing something that's not there, the songs could symbolize regular downloadable tracks again, or, more excitingly, the imminent reveal of a new Harmonix project. If the latter proves true, early March might be a time-frame to keep tabs on. PAX East, Harmonix's hometown convention, takes place March 6-8 in Boston. Harmonix already has a history of unveiling new games around that show, as it did in 2012 with Rock Band Blitz. DLC Week of 2/17 - Singles from Tenacious D and Weezer! [Harmonix]
| What the hell?! Captain Toad has a spin attack! Posted: 16 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST Have you ever pushed through an annoying sequence without realizing that you were in fact "playing it wrong" and failing to grasp a concept or mechanic? I am guilty of this, but I'm struggling to think of an example newer than infinitely-spawning troops in Call of Duty's Veteran difficulty. Well, here's one oversight I won't soon forget: Captain Toad has an attack in Treasure Tracker. And no, I don't mean throwing turnips. Next you're going to tell me he can secretly do triple jumps. Writing on Miiverse, director Shinya Hiratake breaks it down: "This might be going off on a bit of a tangent, but another one of the questions we received was 'Why did you include an attack for Captain Toad where he gets dizzy from spinning around?' This action is actually supposed to be Captain Toad attacking enemies with his backpack! We added it in because we wanted to give his backpack another purpose besides preventing him from jumping! We also wanted to add another means of attack besides throwing stuff, for players who have got used to playing the game!" The move requires some setup to get the timing just right -- you have to spin the analog stick around a few times -- but it totally works. See the clip below. | Giorgio Moroder says he's scoring a new Tron game Posted: 16 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST Giorgio Moroder is back and I can't fully express how happy that makes me. In a word: ridiculously. Since contributing to Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, the legendary record producer has kept busy: he's been DJing, working on a studio album (74 is the New 24), scoring a "big movie," and, hello, what's this? He is also "doing the music for a game for Disney's Tron," reports Clash. The project is officially unannounced, but it's no surprise we'd see another game adaptation of the property. Moroder added that he's meeting with Skrillex for the project. "We have about five themes, electronic stuff and let's see if he's interested in remixing or re-working one of the songs." My ears are ready. Breakfast with Giorgio Moroder [Clash via reddit] |
Code Name S.T.E.A.M's Abe Lincoln gets all pushy on his birthday Posted: 16 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST The anniversary of Honest Abe's birth was four days ago, but, like Fiddy, we don't give a f*ck it's not his birthday. We're partyin' now, and we're similarly celebrating every Commander in Chief's tenure. Maybe that's why Lincoln seems a bit miffed in this Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. trailer. Those hard-working alien-fighters just want to go pop the bub', but he insists that they deploy. Maybe it shouldn't come as a surprise; those Lincoln-Douglas debates had "diva" written all over them.
Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator is getting its own convention Posted: 16 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST I have always been interested in playing Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator, but have never had an opportunity. A team had it set up at Phoenix Comicon a couple years ago, but the room was booked for the whole weekend, so I was only able to sit and watch. Even then, it's fascinating to see people fail at the asymmetric cooperative simulation. Opportunities to actually play will presumably be much more prevalent at Artemis Armada One, the first ever convention dedicated to the sci-fi indie title. It is set to take place in Cleveland on April 10-12, with the capability of running up two 20 different bridges (120 players) simultaneously. In addition to being a place to actually play, another neat thing is that there will be scripted battles whose results will go down in Artemis canon.
Posted: 16 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST Sukeban Shachou Rena, also known as "President Cat," was one of those games destined to never leave Japan despite our pleas. Back in 2009, western fans petitioned for a localization, but this minigame collection about a CEO cat was perhaps ahead of its time -- it sold miserably. No matter. Our love for Rena is unwavering. Dawww, just look at that face.
Wii U 32GB Deluxe Bundle is $259 again for Presidents Day Posted: 16 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST It's back. The $259.99 Nintendo Wii U 32GB Deluxe Bundle deal appeared earlier this morning on Rakuten/Buy.com's eBay store. The sale ends later this week, but we're absolutely positive it'll run out of stock well before then. (At the current pace, they're selling about ~20 units per minute, so we'd give this a few hours at best.) Over at Groupon, you also have the PS4 and Xbox One on sale, which we mentioned in yesterday's weekend deal post. The PS4 actually ran out of stock mid-day Sunday but is now available again. The Xbox One is, well, still there.
Best Buy Gamers Club discount program is $30 in-store for two years Posted: 16 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST Best Buy has been running a discount program called the "Gamers Club," which nets you 20% off new games, and runs a cycle of deals on its site for some time now. It's typically $100 for two years, which isn't that great of a deal since you'd have to spend a decent amount of cash to earn your investment back. For this week only though, in-store, you can purchase the program for $30. Other perks include double "points" on gaming related items, extra trade-in points and credit, 10% off pre-owned games, and a coupon book. I'm generally not a fan of Best Buy since it doesn't respect pre-orders as much as other retailers, but this is a no-brainer if you buy lots of new games at retail.
Live action Halo: Nightfall to release on March 17 Posted: 16 Feb 2015 02:30 AM PST Owners of Halo: The Master Chief Collection automatically had access to the five-episode live action series Halo: Nightfall, but soon it will be available for the plebeians on DVD, Blu-ray, and video on demand. On March 17, it will release for the rest of us. I have always had a soft spot for the story behind the Halo games, though I admit I haven't been keeping up with the games since Halo: Reach. This reminds me; I still need to go back and finish watching Forward Unto Dawn.
More info arises on the Final Fantasy XV: Episode Duscae demo Posted: 16 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST Famitsu has some more information on the upcoming Final Fantasy XV: Episode Duscae demo, and it's sounding pretty awesome. You'll have plenty of zones to explore, ranging from mountains to forests to plains, and some caves will pop up every now and then filled with treasure or monsters. Neat! To level-up, you'll "store" experience, then actually engage it at your camp, where you can talk to your party and eat food that will grant stat bonuses. You'll also get to fight at Behemoth enemy should you so choose. Based on the wording, said Behemoth seems to function as a "demo superboss," which is really neat. Challenge accepted! Expect the demo at the launch of Type-0 HD in March on PS4 and Xbox One. 『ファイナルファンタジーXV』体験版に収録される要素が判明 [Game Jouhou via Siliconera]
Here's the rub on the Best Buy Meta Knight amiibo in-store situation Posted: 16 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST Another week, another hunting day for amiibo collectors and parents everywhere. Friday, February 20 is when the Best Buy exclusive Meta Knight figure will launch across the US. So what can you expect when you go to the store in the morning? Something similar to the Lucario situation, based on early reports. In other words, stores are expecting very little stock, somewhere in the neighborhood of five to ten units per store -- that's more than Shulk, about on par with Lucario, and fewer than Rosalina. This listing from a Chicago area Best Buy system [Thanks, Craig] for instance indicates that stores are getting anywhere from zero to twelve units. But if you're willing to call your local locations, they'll usually just tell you how many they have on-hand. All of the stores in my area typically range from three to four, up to ten max. Readers are reporting that it's roughly the same for them. Essentially, you're looking at a "sell out" situation at opening this Friday at nearly every store in the country. Make sure you know how many your store has before you go out in the freezing cold the night before or in the morning. Most Best Buy stores will do a "ticketing system" to prevent situations where there's only three total, but there's ten or more in line. But just in case you'll want to get a heads-up, as another nearby store may have more. Good luck on Friday!
How short is too short? Controversy over The Order: 1886's length Posted: 15 Feb 2015 11:30 PM PST Although the embargo for The Order: 1886 is Thursday morning, many gamers have gotten their hands on the title this past weekend and...they've completed it. Since there is no multiplayer component, controversy has been sparked as to the game's short (reportedly six to ten hour) length, and the developer has "refused" to comment on it. This argument again? I've given readers my stance on this issue multiple times but I'll say it again. "Value" is relative. While I don't fault anyone for factoring the price of a game into a review score or general assessment, it doesn't really bother me as long as the experience is enjoyable, and the length is made known to the public. For instance, I'm totally okay with recommending a shorter $60 game if my audience knows that it is short, since I respect them to make their own decisions. That decision will likely be price-drop driven, which is their choice as a consumer. But how do you feel? Ready at Dawn responds to concern over The Order: 1886 campaign length [Eurogamer]
Details revealed for microtransaction-laden Pokémon Shuffle, and they're pretty disgusting Posted: 15 Feb 2015 10:30 PM PST Pokémon Shuffle is a thing, and it's set to arrive on the 3DS this week in Japan as a spiritual successor to the puzzler Pokémon Trozei. It's also free-to-play. Details have arisen from the official Japanese site as to how much the microtransactions will cost, and it's not looking good. At first, you'll get five "hearts," which function as energy -- in other words, win or lose, each stage costs a heart to play. Once you run out you'll have to wait 30 minutes for each heart to regenerate, StreetPass, or pay money. For the latter option it's roughly $1 per "Gem," which nets you a measly five hearts. You can also buy coins with Gems to decrease the difficulty of stages to get power-ups. There will be 160 stages in all, and as long as you're willing to wait for the energy to refill, you can beat the game without it. Right now the jury is out as to whether or not stages are artificially crafted to make you want to pay for power-ups, but the energy mechanic is completely off-putting. Nintendo should have been a cut above the rest and put in a $15 "unlimited energy" purchase, so that people could buy the "full game" if they wanted to. 160 stages with 30 minutes of waiting between each, accounting for a 100% win rate? That's roughly 80 hours of waiting for energy to refill. F2P 3DS title Pokémon Shuffle Gets Japanese Release Date (18/02) & Pricing Scheme [NeoGAF]
