Nude Maker hopes to port NightCry to PS4, Xbox One

Posted: 15 Feb 2015 12:30 PM PST

Clock Tower spiritual successor NightCry seems unlikely to satisfy its $300,000 crowdfunding goal, given the title has raised just half that sum with only a week to go. Despite the grim outlook, its creators have unveiled new stretch goals showing a desire to bring the horror game to consoles.

Nude Maker hopes to bankroll a PlayStation 4 version should it acquire $450,000 and promises an Xbox One release if contributions total more than $550,000. Playism tells Destructoid the project is planned for PlayStation Vita and mobile platforms regardless of the campaign's outcome.

The team also released a new gameplay reel, teaching us not to hide in clothes dryers.

Nintendo reneges on plans to bring TVii to Europe

Posted: 15 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST

Nintendo has cancelled plans to launch its Wii U TVii service across Europe.

"Due to the extremely complex nature of localising multiple television services across a diverse range of countries with varied licensing systems, regrettably we have taken the decision not to launch the Nintendo TVii service within the European region."

The decree follows a series of delays, which the company ascribes to unexpected challenges. Trying to get the service up and running in so many countries must have been an organizational nightmare. There is the new Nintendo Anime Channel on 3DS, though. That's something, at least.

The original Doom gets a 'selfie support' fan mod

Posted: 15 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST

When Doom was first released, at least one person I knew was confused by it. "Where the heck am I? I don't see anyone here at all!" they squawked. "You are the player." 16-year-old me retorted brassily "You have to go around and kill the demons". "No I'm not!" they'd protest, "I'm me! How can I be me and the player at the same time?!?!"

If you're still out there, 91-year-old Grandfather to my one friend with a computer in the 1993 that could run Doom, I've got good news for you. Thanks to the prowess of modern technology, now you can look right at Doom guy and play Doom at the same time. Your confusion about who is in the game and who you are can finally be put to rest, thanks to InstaDoom, an Instagram-inspired mod that allows you to stop and pose for the camera as you fight off various hellish monstrosities.

If you look closely, you'll see that Doom guy isn't taking his selfies in the conventional way. He's using something called a "selfie stick", which is something I did not know existed until about five seconds ago. If a videogame where you are the player character was confusing to him, I have no idea how Grandpa is going to handle the news about the selfie stick.

Good luck, Grandpa.

This week on Sup Holmes we welcome Gordon Midwood back to the program. Gordon is one of the funniest guests we've ever had on the show, so when I heard he had a new game in the works I snapped him up for a return appearance right quick. We'll be talking about what went wrong (and right) with his Kickstarter for Lilt Line Too!, what secrets he can divulge about upcoming his "drive on three tracks at once" racer Drive!Drive!Drive!, and whatever else he wants to talk about.

Join us at 4pm EST for the full shebang!

Samus and Sagat take on their greatest opponent

Posted: 15 Feb 2015 03:30 AM PST

Like the initial entry of any epic trilogy, the first two episodes of Samus and Sagat worked to establish the characters. Now that we're finally into act two of the story, we can start moving into the real meat of this drama. You could consider this episode to be the Samus and Sagat equivalent to Spider-Man 2. Watch as our heroes rise up from self doubt to battle their greatest foe!

While you're at it, subscribe to our Youtube channel if you're a regular reader of our front page who enjoys our video content. For better or worse, many of our current Youtube subscribers don't seem to know that Dtoid is also a videogame website. Many of them have been awful confused since Max has moved on and more of our front page editors have moved in to the video production side of Dtoid. As always, the more you watch and share the Dtoid videos that you enjoy, the more of those videos we'll be able to make. We can't do it without your help.

Also, congratulations to Patty for winning our gif contest! You done good.

Particle Mace devs get down and dirty on design and development

Posted: 15 Feb 2015 02:30 AM PST

[Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on Youtube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.]

It's a white out blizzard right now in the Northeastern United States. The roads are not safe. Visibility is down to ten feet in some places. If you're stuck at home today, why not catch up on Sup Holmes? We've got an episode here with Andy Wallace, designer of Extreme Exorcism and creator of Particle Mace, that is sure to warm your heart.

Andy is probably old enough to be my son, which made it all the more surprising to hear how deeply he appreciates games that are about the same age as I am. We talked about how learning about every aspect of game development is important to anyone who wants to work in the industry, how rapid concept generation and subsequent self criticism is crucial to his process, the methods to best insert joy into people's brains, and a lot more.

Thanks again to Andy for being on the program, and be sure to tune in today when we welcome Gordon Midwood of Drive!Drive!Drive! back to the show. Gordon is hilarious. We're starting up the show right here at 4pm EST, so don't be late!

Review: Blackguards 2

Posted: 15 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST

A few weeks ago, I called Blackguards 2 "deep, unfriendly, and buggy." I had put several hours into the tactical role-playing game, but hadn't seen enough of the story to comfortably put out a review.

Fast forward to today, and my original assessment requires a bit of tweaking. Within the first two weeks of its release, Daedalic put out two huge patches, each aiming to fix the stability issues that plagued Blackguards 2 at launch. The patches did introduce their own issues, but for the most part I would describe it now as only deep and unfriendly. Two out of three ain't bad.
