| Rumor: Rayman could be coming to Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS as a playable character Posted: 14 Feb 2015 03:00 PM PST
A video has surfaced on YouTube that appears to show Rayman, from Ubisoft's popular franchise, as a selectable character in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. We've posted a mirror in case the original is taken down. |
| I made my own gaming magazine and I need feedback! Posted: 14 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST [Longtime lurker Caz needs your help designing his own gaming mag. Cool! -Mr Andy Dixon] Hi Destructoid! I've been a lurker here for a long time, and like a passive aggressive partner, I'm only talking to you now when I need something, being the selfish thing that I am. So yeah, I'm Caz, and I'm studying graphic design at the University of the Arts London, which is great fun, and a lot of hard work. Recently, we had a project at Uni that tasked us with two weeks to make a zine, which are small, self published magazines. I've loved videogames ever since I could hold a controller, and when we were told to make a zine about something we felt passionate about, it seemed natural to do one on my love for games. |
| Upcoming Dragon Age: Inquisition patch will add item customization, storage, and more Posted: 14 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST BioWare has made some of the most critically acclaimed games of all time. Unfortunately, it's also made some of the buggiest. Dragon Age: Inquisition is no exception. It is a wonderful adventure and one of my favorite games of last year; however, it had a huge list of bugs. BioWare has been steadily putting out patches, which have eliminated a large chunk of glitches and added features players almost unanimously requested. Unfortunately, when I played, the patch that added item indicators on the minimap while pinging hadn't made it out yet. A good hour of my playthrough was spent searching for loot, only to realize a door or ladder had triggered a ping. One long, maddening eternal hour that I left a part of myself behind in. BioWare is touting Patch Five as the biggest patch it's released to date. For the first time, it'll be employing a small group of players to beta test the patch in the near future in an attempt to isolate bugs quickly and allow the developers to interact directly with part of their fanbase. |
| Jake Kaufman's VR music album Nuren is up on Kickstarter Posted: 14 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST Late last year, Jake "virt" Kaufman left WayForward to strike out on his own. Since then, he has hinted about a big project he envisions. It looks like Nuren: The New Renaissance is that project. A collaborative project between Kaufman and Jessie Seely, Nuren is described as a "feature-length [virtual reality] music experience." It intends to be not quite a game, not quite an album, not quite a movie, but an amalgamation of all three. Kaufman and Seely are composing and recording tracks for the project and working with various artists and programmers to build environments unique to each track. Each track is experienced on rails, but the viewer has full control over where to look at any given point. Nuren is up on Kickstarter now, seeking a base funding goal of $70,000. Due to the nature of the project, there are currently no stretch goals. If it reaches its goal, Nuren is expected to release on Linux, Mac, and Windows, for use with standard displays or Oculus Rift. |
| Sheik and Toon Link amiibo wish you a happy Valentine's Day Posted: 14 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST Valentine's Day makes most people I know feel uncomfortable. The modern concept of the holiday has been designed around taking heartfelt expressions of attention/appreciation/affection and packaging them into rote, uniform little bundles of "love." Already sounds kind of like amiibo, doesn't it? In fact, one might say that amiibo are the chalky, heart shaped, "B Mine" and "I Wuv U" candies of the Nintendo world. If collecting videogames is like collecting love letters, then every amiibo is like an individual sext from a stranger who may actually be a tweetbot. If none of that made any sense to you, don't worry. All you need to know is in this music video. Here you will find all of the fake plastic love and bizarre sexual bravado that you normally get from Valentine's Day, but in amiibo form. That I can tell you for certain. What I can't tell you for certain is what Toon Link is doing to Link's butt at the end of the song. Feel free to enlighten me in the comments. Thanks to Josh Grilli for helping me track down that darn Sheik amiibo. |
| Is Peter Molyneux done talking to the press? Posted: 14 Feb 2015 08:45 AM PST If you pay attention to video game news and the media, then chances are you know the name Peter Molyneux for more than the games Populous, Black & White and Fable. His name has become synonymous with over promises and what seems like flat-out lying to some. To loyal Molyneux fans, the past and present have not been kind. And recently, the frustration caused by years of broken promises boiled over in a recent Rock, Paper, Shotgun interview. The piece is long. And whether you agree with the style in which RPS approached the interview, it's clear the years of constant used car salesman-like tactics have taken their toll. Because of the recent backlash, Molyneux told The Guardian that his days of speaking with the press are done: "I love working on games, it is my life. I am so honoured to be a part of the games industry, but I understand that people are sick of hearing my voice and hearing my promises. So I’m going to stop doing press and I’m going to stop talking about games completely. And actually I’m only giving you this interview now in answer to this terrible and awful, emotional time over the last three days. I think honestly the only answer to this is for me to completely stop talking to the press." But is he really? The Guardian pointed out that even though Molyneux told them the interview would be his last, he also spoke with RPS and another outlet around the same time. Is this the last we've heard of Molyneux? No chance. Peter Molyneux interview: 'It's over, I will not speak to the press again' [The Guardian] |
| Experience Points .04: Catherine Posted: 14 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST Experience Points is a series in which I highlight some of the most memorable things about a particular game. These can include anything from a specific scene or moment, a character, a weapon or item, a level or location, a part of the soundtrack, a gameplay mechanic, a line of dialogue, or anything else about the game that is particularly noteworthy and/or awesome. This series will no doubt contain spoilers for the games being discussed, so keep that in mind if you plan on playing the game for the first time. This entry is all about Catherine. Since today is Valentine's Day, I figured I'd pick a game that's all about love, sex, and relationships (and also cheating... uhhh...). Feel free to share some of your own favorite things about the game in the comments! |
| Kickstarter launched for spiritual successor to EarthBound, Mach Rider, SimEarth Posted: 14 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST [Just in time for Valentine's Day. -Mr Andy Dixon] Fans of Ecco the Dolphin, Mega Man Legends, Duck Hunt and Advent Rising should head to Kickstarter right away to throw their support behind a new campaign for a game that is a spiritual successor to those titles and any other game you one time said you’d want a sequel to in a chatroom or comment thread. |
| Obscure Video Games: Cooking Fighter Hao Posted: 14 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST When you hear the words "cooking game," your mind probably goes right to the uber-casual Cooking Mama franchise that was huge in the late 2000s. However, years before that in 1998, Nippon Ichi put out its own cooking game for the original PlayStation -- Cooking Fighter Hao. This is a completely different experience than what you might expect. The game plays out sort of like a two-player arena-based fighting game. You and either a friend or CPU opponent run around and try to cut up the assigned meat. These animals include everything from chicken to crab to snapping turtle to horse (as you can see in the GIF). After stunning the animal, you cook the meal by casting a spell on it with a series of button presses. The player who cooks the most meals wins. |

| Square Enix reveals new Dissidia Final Fantasy Posted: 13 Feb 2015 04:10 PM PST Square Enix has a new Dissidia Final Fantasy in the works, the publisher revealed today at the Japan Amusement Expo in Chiba. It's a three-on-three fighting game currently only announced for arcades. You have to figure it will end up elsewhere sooner or later, though. One would hope. The series got its start on PlayStation Portable and figured to be in search of a new home moving forward. But arcades? Boy howdy, now that's a surprise! Square says it will share more on April 10. | This guy caught 'em all in Pokémon Red and Blue quicker than you'll ever hope to Posted: 13 Feb 2015 04:00 PM PST Back in Pokémon's heyday, it was difficult enough to catch 'em all with legitimate friends, additional cartridges, and link cables, let alone do it in record time. One talented 21-year-old speedrunner from Ohio who goes by the name of Shenanagans Smash did just that, without trading, but with the help of several glitches. Shenanagans Smash collected all of the original 151 Pokémon (including Mew) in a mere 2:20:19, a time that makes me weep and feel inadequate. Of course, it's important to note that this speedrun makes copious use of a process known as "Dsum manipulation" and other glitches that are used in the run to select what types of Pokémon appear in the wild, enable the player to skip the Pewter City entirely, and manipulate many other facets of the game. You can find more information on those processes here, and it may be a little less impressive given the fact that this isn't a "legitimate" run in that the speedrunner didn't sit down and actually play the game proper (you can't catch Mew without glitching), but you still have to admit it's some kind of feat.
