ZeniMax details The Elder Scrolls Online's upcoming free-to-play store

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 03:00 PM PST

The latest MMO to go the free-to-play route is The Elder Scrolls Online. Last month's announcement was a bit of a shocker to some, as going free to play is an indicator of bad news for MMOs. However, ZeniMax is trying its best to allay those fears in its latest development blog.

When the game transitions on March 17, purchases will be available for the new "Crowns" virtual currency. For now, the cleverly titled Crown Store will only be offering items affecting "customization and convenience."

Customization covers: pets, costumes, mounts, and vanity items; while convenience refers to health and mana potions that can be bought that are equal to or weaker than the ones already in the game. ZeniMax also commented that experience potions would "almost certainly" be coming to the game at some point, but released no solid details.

It's still being discussed if Crown Store items will be available exclusively for purchase with Crowns or if in-game currency can be used as well.

I figure if Star Trek Online can pull it off, this game can. I love STO and I don't even know what the hell I'm doing with all the currencies and lockboxes. The Elder Scrolls Online is keeping it simple, and that's a good thing.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth DLC coming this year

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 02:30 PM PST

Edmund McMillen announced some new details today about the upcoming DLC for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, aptly titled Afterbirth. It looks like it's going to be a HUGE expansion with tons of new content, which Edmund says, "should easily extend the gameplay time by another 100-200 hours." Holy crap!

The expansion will include, among other things:

- 100+ new items.
- A full new game mode that will totally change how you play.
- 10 new challenges.
- A new playable character.
- A new alternate final chapter.
- New alternate floors.
- New game endings.
- Tons of new bosses and enemies.
- New item pickups, cards, pills, etc.
- Tons of new achievements and rewards for beating the game on hard.
- New co-op babies.
- New transformations.

The Afterbirth DLC will hopefully be released around the middle of this year. More information can be found here. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life playing Isaac!

Edmund is also asking players to provide suggestions for which item combinations they'd like to see added to the game, giving the example of "Midas Touch + E. Coli = golden poop on touch." You can submit your suggestions to this Reddit thread. What do you think would make an interesting combo?

Interesting song choice, Space Hulk: Deathwing

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST

Oh, that's right! The studio behind the eccentric cyberpunk shooter E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy is now making a Warhammer 40,000 game called Space Hulk: Deathwing. That probably explains the atypical song selection (Kadebostany's "Walking with a Ghost") for this trailer.

I'm curious to see how Streum On Studio will pull off first-person gunplay in the cramped corridors of a Space Hulk. The execution could easily fall flat. Then again, Deathwing is packing Terminator armor and psychic abilities, so I'm obligated by law to keep up with the game until release.

When that'll happen, I'm not sure. The date is still listed as TBA for "PC and consoles."

Frozen Cortex is releasing soon, so here's a trailer!

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST

Frozen Cortex, the strategy game dressed up in sports clothing, is coming out soon! Like, really soon apparently. In less than a week, on February 19, Frozen Cortex will come out of the Early Access incubation pod and be ready to be played by the masses. Considering how great Frozen Synapse was, this should be a no-brainer for strategy fans.

For now, why not watch the new trailer? It has everything: live action, dramatic zooms, cats, jump scares, a toilet, and some deep symbolism. I took it to mean that in our core, we're really just frozen solid. Sort of like a meatball that hasn't been heated through quite right. Everything seems normal on the outside but then BLAM, gross temperature and texture pop out of nowhere.

Anyway, go pick up Frozen Cortex, you meatballs. There's a "Designer's Notes" video too, if you're still not convinced. It goes into a bit of detail about mechanics and inspiration.

Review: Evolve

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 11:30 AM PST

Trying to pin down my exact thoughts on Evolve has been trickier than pinning down any kind of prey the game has thrown at me. I was cautious with my initial impressions of the game earlier this week, noting an uneven play experience that often feels like a frustrating runaround. While I'd love to say that another few days of dedicated hunting and skulking was enough to iron out the kinks and worries I had, in the end this is one hunt you might want to sit out.

It's a shame, because when Evolve is firing on all cylinders, it has been some of the best multiplayer fun I've had in years. But those precious few moments are far too rare -- and far too laborious to set up -- to give Evolve an unreserved recommendation.

A trademark has been filed for Soldiers' Soul

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST

This should be prefaced by saying that trademark news should always be taken with a grain of salt. With that out of the way, we might have a heads-up as to what the next game in the widely beloved Souls series is.

In Europe, a trademark was recently filed for the term "Soldiers' Soul." It was purportedly filed by Namco Bandai, the publisher of From Software's games. This news comes before Bloodborne's even been released, indicating that the developer would already have its sights set on the future.

In the past, false filings have been made with the intention of tricking the general public. It's impossible to tell if that's the case here. We've contacted Namco Bandai to see if a representative can confirm the authenticity of the trademark. We'll update this post when/if we receive a reply.

Videogames and military recruitment: Part 1

From Teaching to Terrorism

Videogames have been used by many professions over the years as teaching tools, often in schools to help children have fun while learning spelling or math. As the idea of the usefulness of videogames as a learning tool has grown, we have started to see video games being used for all sorts of teaching and training purposes.

Review: Super Stardust Ultra

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST

Super Stardust has been around for a long time -- since 1994, in fact. Although most people know the franchise from Super Stardust HD, it was originally on the Amiga platform before it hit the big-time. Now developer Housemarque is back yet again with Ultra, which isn't really a new entry so much as a fresh coat of paint for the PlayStation 4.

Hardcore fans may feel duped by this not-so-sequel iteration, but newcomers who have long been curious about Stardust will want to jump in right with Ultra.

Sony spreading the love with Valentine flash sale

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 09:15 AM PST

Valentine's Day isn't just a day for couples to make up an excuse to slap skin. It's also an excuse for retailers to hold special sales. Sony is no different with this weekend's flash sale.

If you're feeling lonely or want to try and ignore what's happening this weekend, then check out what's for sale. There are quite a few good deals in there. I might actually bite on that $10 Knack. Also take special note that Monster Monpiece is $9 -- just make sure not to play in front of mom and dad.

Darksiders II is just the latest in a long line of re-releases

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST

Did you like the last generation of gaming on platforms of yesteryear? A lot of good stuff came out for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Legacy consoles are seemingly maintaining their relevance by the sheer number of re-releases that make their way to the shiny, new machines.

The latest to take advantage of the fad is Nordic Games with Darksiders II. According to an Amazon listing, action RPG will hack and slash on over to PS4 at some point. The page has a release date of December 31, 2015, indicating that it's likely a placeholder.

Expectedly, this $40 title is the "definitive edition," meaning that it'll likely come packaged with all content ever released for the game. It's also assumed that the visuals are gussied up a bit. That's as definitive as definitive gets in the videogame world.

Covers for Yumi's Odd Odyssey offer some slight variations

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 08:45 AM PST

There's an important rule in the entertainment industry: Know your audience.

For the PS Vita version of Yumi's Odd Odyssey set to arrive in April in Japan, it appears this philosophy is being followed pretty closely. See if you can spot what the difference might be between the Nintendo 3DS version and the "ahem" mature Vita version.

It might take you a while, so be patient.

Teddy Diefenbach's Alphabeats is up on Steam Greenlight

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST

Last year when Alphabeats was originally announced, I lamented that it was only on iOS, with no word of an Android release. Though it might not have ever released for the superior mobile operating system, it looks like the rest of us may get another chance at the letter-collecting rhythm game.

Alphabeats is now up on Steam Greenlight, seeking approval to release on the platform for Linux, Mac, and Windows. If anything, this seems ideal; I think I'd rather control this with a mouse and listen to the bumpin' soundtrack (Big Giant Circles, Disasterpiece) through my PC headphones instead of my little phone earbuds anyway.

Watch Zelda producer go fishing in Majora's Mask 3D

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST

Majora's Mask 3D is out today. Did you buy it? You should probably buy it. You know, if you want.

It's the same (well, maybe a tad different) great game from back in the day, but with a few notable additions, like fishing holes. In this video, The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma gives us a look at the piscary mini-game. He gives us a look at a couple different rods, which can be used to fish at different depths. The world may be in peril, but there's always time for a little R&R.

Also, good lord is the end of the video frightening. Watch out for that potential heart attack.

Sunset Overdrive gets sentimental

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 07:45 AM PST

In honor of Valentine's Day and the loved ones around us, Sunset Overdrive has added a new achievement today for 175 points dubbed the D’awwwwww Achievement.

The idea of the achievement is to find 12 drawings by the game director's daughter, Ainsley. If you need help with it, feel free to check out the video above on how to find them. Though, you're hardcore, you don't need anyone to hold your hand, right?

Once you've found the locations, you'll unlock a custom outfit inspired by Ainsley. Unless you're cold and heartless, it should make you say "D’awwwwww."

$9 Valkyria Chronicle as GamersGate 10th anniversary sale continues

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST

The Sweden-based digital game retailer is running an anniversary sale this week, which we covered yesterday. The deals continue today with a solid sale on Valkyria Chronicles for only $9.

This is a perfect deal for those who missed out on the $8 GMG deal from a few weeks ago, which lasted only 24 hours. Conversely, the GamersGate Valkyria Chronicle deal will last for 48 hours.

Some other choice picks include Metro Redux titles at more than half off and Warframe packs at a discount (someone well versed in Warfarme economics should chime in on the value of these packs).

Finally there are 22 Tom Clancy titles to sort through. Some of these are Uplay DRM while some are mixed legacy stuff -- so we'd double check the DRM before purchasing, just in case you get stuck with a Tagés DRM title...

It looks like Just Cause 3 will end 2015 on a high note

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST

Cool song! And it's nice to have a holiday 2015 release window locked in for Just Cause 3 (PC, PS4, Xbox One), but I'll take gameplay footage over a CG trailer any day. Where's that?

Writing on the PlayStation Blog, Avalanche Studios co-founder Christofer Sundberg said he sympathizes. "We can't wait to show you what we've been working on, and we take a lot of pride in it. That's why we want to make sure the first gameplay trailer we put out shows what Just Cause 3 is about, and that it meets both ours and your expectations."

I unlocked all 16 of the Majora's Mask DLC outfits in Hyrule Warriors

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST

Happy Majora's Mask day!

Over the past week, I've spent I don't know how many hours trying to get through the new DLC in Hyrule Warriors. Even if I did know, I wouldn't say. A lot. Way too many.

To access certain levels, you'll need to use a Deku, Goron, or Zora mask on the Termina Adventure map. Sounds neat, except it's set up such that you have to beat one level to get a mask that can let you reach another mask to obtain the mask you really wanted all along (x10). Then and only then can you make real progress toward stopping that danged moon from crash landing.

The levels themselves are, at times, absurd in their difficulty. New mission types place you in a heated race against A.I. warriors to take keeps, or collect rupees, or rack up KOs. It's you and you alone against their posse which just so happens to include boss monsters because no one said this was going to be a fair fight. I hope most of your characters are sufficiently leveled.

Anyway, enough talk. I managed to nab the last of the Majora's Mask DLC outfits last night and some are downright hilarious. Others, horrific. What's best in life? Darunia wearing a Goron mask.

Depression Quest co-creator looks for what's hidden in Disorder

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST

All art, or indeed even all communication, is a process of connecting with others through shared experience. Whether we’re trying to express a specific experience, or conversely, reveling in the knowledge that there's at least one other person out there who Gets Us, art can be as therapeutic to consume as it is to create.

The more ambiguous and less concrete the subject of the art in question, the more difficult a process this becomes. This is why love songs comprise about 99.9% of all popular music - we’ve all, at some point, been in love or, at very least, infatuated with someone, so the otherwise mawkish lyrics and saccharine melodies turn into our jam, because it hits us where we live.

The most difficult part of the human experience to capture externally is also one of the most essential: what goes on in our minds. We take our minds, and everything they bring along with them -- emotion, thoughts, memories -- completely for granted. It’s 2015 and while we’ve managed to successfully land a satellite on a comet and multiple robots on a planet 140 million miles away, we still have yet to crack what makes us tick.

Maybe, baby, Dale North is the one for me

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST

Ah, that smooth, buttery voice. Those luscious harmonies. That pixelated plaid shirt. That is our friend (and former Editor-in-Chief) Dale North. He has taken the default lyrics to the ballad "Maybe, Baby" in Tomodachi Life and replaced the normal robot voice with his own.

This comes just in time for Valentine's Day. Send this to your valentine, and he or she will instantly fall in love with you (or maybe Dale). Now, do you all think we can convince him to do "Loving Things" by Jim Sterling?

Visit the steep mountains of Far Cry 4 at a steep discount

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST

Plane tickets are expensive. If you want to go check out the Himalayas, you're looking at several thousand dollars. "In this economy?!," Steven might scoff.

A more affordable route to world tourism is through Ubisoft's rendition in Far Cry 4. It's half-off on Amazon for the day, ringing in at a reasonable $30. That's seems like a fair price for a honey badger to maul your face off.

Amazon has a few other deals going on too that might pique someone's interest. There are even some common amiibo on modest discount for anyone that's balked on picking them up until now.

Capcom is making an Attack on Titan arcade game

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 04:15 AM PST

Capcom is developing an Attack on Titan arcade game, the publisher revealed today at the Japan Amusement Expo in Chiba. Details are scarce at present, but we'll learn more this summer.

Attack on Titan is a dark fantasy franchise set in a world where man-eating giants have pushed humanity to the brink of extinction. What's left of our species hides behind enormous walls while the armed forces seek to stem the tide and keep the creatures at bay.

Atlus USA is rumored to be working on a localization of a Nintendo 3DS game based on the anime and manga series, which Destructoid's video pal Jed Whitaker took a look at earlier this month. You can check out his impressions and some footage of the game here.

Assassin's Creed movie is in production, is actually happening

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST

Say what you will about recent Star Wars films, but the franchise is still a juggernaut in just about every facet of the market. People are hopeful about the new wave of Disney movies, and that includes the spinoff releasing on December 16, 2016, written by Gary Whitta and directed by Gareth Edwards.

20th Century Fox and New Regency have decided to pit the Assassin's Creed movie against said spinoff on December 21. Not a smart move. At least we know that the film still exists and that they are entering the production phase, filming "soon" according to Ubisoft, but I'm not sure how it will fare at the box office -- maybe we won't get a yearly release like the games.

Dragon Quest Heroes will have free villain DLC, just like Hyrule Warriors

Hyrule Warriors is a damn fine hack and slash, and it has an amazing DLC strategy to boot. It looks like Dragon Quest Heroes may be following in its footsteps, as it is also releasing free playable villain DLC after release.

Free DLC? Square Enix, is that really you?

You can see the reveal in the new gameplay video above, billed as "shocking new information." Dragon Quest Heroes is coming to Japan soon for the PS3 and PS4 -- no word on a localization yet.

It looks like new amiibo models of Rosalina, Wario, and Donkey Kong are likely confirmed

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 02:17 AM PST

Rejoice, amiibo fans who may have missed out on Rosalina! It looks like Nintendo's Japanese Mario Party 10 landing site may have just confirmed another run of the figure.

Going on a tip from a reader, it appears as if the site has full-on pictures of new amiibo figures for Rosalina, Wario, and Donkey Kong. As we know some amiibo are getting a new Mario Party themed line with red bases, including the all-new Toad figure.

While this isn't concrete evidence, the new Rosalina pose sans Luma sure looks like a legitimate figure. Plus, why wouldn't Nintendo have figures for every playable character in the game?

If this comes to pass (and it looks like it will eventually), you'll probably get another chance to pick up Rosalina for use in Smash Bros. and Mario Party, since the figures work on both titles. It makes a little more sense now as to why Target isn't getting any more Rosalina orders.

The hunt is on today for the Majora's Mask New 3DS XL, here's what I found

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 01:57 AM PST

[Update: Target seems to have some extra stock online from dropped pre-orders. Check now (try the mobile link too) and throughout the day to see if anything pops up. GameStop is also taking orders on a $250 bundle with the game and Majora's Mask-themed New 3DS.]

Another big videogame product launch, another retailer hunt from yours truly.

This morning the New 3DS XL debuted across the country in the US, and thousands of fans are looking to get their hands on the coveted Majora's Mask 3DS. As many of you know it sold out in minutes in-store at GameStop, and online at Best Buy, among other stores. I got word that select stores would be getting shipments in this morning, so I headed out to three Targets, one Best Buy, and called many more locations.

The verdict? Unless you're in a rural area, your chances of getting one are very slim, even if you go at opening. All of the stores I contacted obtained three to four, and sold out immediately after the doors opened. According to one shop, customers waited outside the night before to snag one of the three of its stock.

0h n0: another simple, free, Japanese logic puzzle

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 01:30 AM PST

Late last year I was turned on to 0h h1, a free digital version of the Japanese logic puzzle Takuzu. Developer Martin Kool of Q42 is at it again. 0h n0 is another adaptation, this time taking the puzzle Kuromasu and giving it the procedurally generated, simple red/blue art treatment.

In 0h n0, each numbered blue circle can see that many other blue circles in the same row or column as itself, but its line of sight is blocked by red circles. The goal is to fill the grid with red and blue such that each numbered circle has its constraints satisfied. As a logic exercise, it is more involved than 0h h1, where the solutions do not come quite as easily and the little victories feel a bit more satisfying as a result.

As with its predecessor, it is available for free on Android, iOS, Windows Phone, or in browser. Check it out if you have some time to waste on this fine Friday.

Very Quick Tips: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 01:01 AM PST

Majora's Mask may have problems, but the three-day cycle concept is not one of them. While some people didn't like the fact that they had to "start all over" after the cycle repeated, that's not really the case.

You get to keep all your key items, you can store your Rupees in a bank and get them back right away, and there's an easy method to ensuring that you have all the time you need for dungeons.

Let's take a look.

Review: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is unlike any other Zelda game in the series. For instance, there's no sign of the franchise's classic villain Ganon, and no Zelda outside of a quick flashback reference.

It's also a decidedly darker affair, with strong themes of depression, anxiety, and general angst due to the impending end of the world. Heck, there's even straight-up voyeurism quest and the assumption of dead people's identities.

Majora has a lot of really cool ideas, and most of them are augmented by the slight upgrades found in Majora's Mask 3D.

Destiny's 1.1.1 patch brings another minor fix, still ignores content drought

Posted: 13 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST

Along with the heavy ammo glitch fix and weapon adjustments, Destiny will get another minor improvement -- the ability to see reputation rank within the pause menu. Previously you had to go to the Tower and manually check each faction to see how you stood.

In terms of content or sidefixes until the heavy ammo glitch patch drops, Bungie has been pretty non-existent. Xur still doesn't sell heavy ammo synths as a temporary fix, Queen's Wrath is nowhere to be found, and neither is the Trials of Osiris.

We're going on a little over a month after Crota Hard Mode dropped and a lot of the "regulars" I play with are either done with it or think it isn't worth the effort. I hope House of Wolves is coming sooner than later.
