True fact: Shooting the Sega logo in Vectorman is life's greatest pleasure Posted: 11 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST It's been almost two decades since I first played Vectorman, BlueSky Software's treasured run-and-gun game for the Sega Genesis, and I still can't get over how absurd its second level is. That's what I had intended to write about today -- the fact that, suddenly and inexplicably, Vectorman is a train chugging along on a track suspended high above an abandoned, overly polluted Earth while an evil robot (err, "orbot") with a nuclear bomb for a head grabs at him. It's a super short level -- the timer begins with 60 seconds on the clock -- and then it's over, no real explanation provided. You're thrown back into familiar side-scrolling action until later one-off levels envision Vectorman as a cricket and eventually a dancin' fool in a disco for some reason. Such a strange, lovely game. I sat down to replay this stuff and gather my thoughts but ended up being too entranced by the interactive Sega screen. If more games began this way, the world would be a better place and we'd all be rich and dogs wouldn't go hungry in the streets probably.
Posted: 11 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST I was worried about Yo-Kai Watch when it was first announced. Putting out a manga, anime and game series all in one fell swoop is no small financial undertaking. Given that Level-5 isn't a multi-billion dollar outfit, they had a lot to lose if Yo-Kai Watch were to fail. On top of that, nothing about the series sounded particularly original. ] It's like Pokémon but instead of catching monsters, you catch ghosts -- totally Japanese ghosts. In fact, I doubt that many people living outside of Japan have even heard the word "Youkai" before. If Yo-Kai Watch couldn't find success in Japan, it probably wouldn't succeed anywhere. It's the kind of game that could easily sink a company if it were to flop. In retrospect, it was probably silly of me to doubt Level-5. The game has gone on to become a massive, culture-wide phenomenon in Japan, in no small part due to Level-5's incredible design skills. While Yo-Kai Watch is clearly influenced by Pokémon, it's also better than Pokémon in a lot of ways. The monster designs are creepy and cute in a manner that defies convention. The battle system detailed and fast paced, allowing you to exercise a variety of different strategies in a streamlined and economic manner. Perhaps most importantly, the game takes place in a world much like our own, where Youkai may be hiding anywhere. That tie to reality can lead a player to keep thinking about Youkai even when they're not playing the game. Maybe there's a Youkai living in that soda machine? Maybe there's one in the toilet? Maybe there is one sitting on my shoulder right now! When questions like this leak into your regular life, it makes everything you do a little more fun. While watching this video, take the time to imagine a Youkai living in Jed's beard. There is no way of proving that there isn't one in there, so you might as well believe.
Take flight with a flock of birds in Gathering Sky Posted: 11 Feb 2015 11:30 AM PST Gathering Sky (formerly named Apsis) is an upcoming game from indie studio A Stranger Gravity. This will be the studio's first commercial release, and it's looking pretty neat! You start off as a single bird soaring through the sky. More birds will join you as you fly past them, and your flock will continue to grow as you travel across gorgeous landscapes. It seems like a nice, relaxing game, akin to Flower. It looks perfect for mobile devices. Gathering Sky will be migrating to iOS, Android, PC, Mac, and Linux in April.
This first-person superhero game has such raw potential Posted: 11 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST Megaton Rainfall brings that idea for a superhero game many of us have had at one point or another to life: it lets players fly around in space before seamlessly touching down on Earth to stop alien invaders. Even if what's shown here is about all there in terms of content, I'm in. Besides the superhero draw, this should also appeal to fans of Earth Defense Force who explicitly go out of their way to take down every last skyscraper. (I have no regrets.) The destruction tech is even more over the top here in Megaton, which is saying something. Designer Alfonso del Cerro is bringing the game to next month's Game Developers Conference (check the Indie Megabooth), but until then, watch this ludicrous work-in-progress video.
Resogun free update available now, expansion coming Posted: 11 Feb 2015 10:15 AM PST If you own a PS4, then you should already own Resogun. It's a quality game. Trust me. For those that left this game on the virtual back shelf for a while, it might be time to check out what's changed. Starting today, a gigantic and free content update called Resogun Challengers is adding "a new system of player levelling which is achieved by earning Challenge Points as a reward for completing new challenges and feats across all existing game modes." The free update also adds a Human Gallery and Photo Mode. Oh, and if you're a trophy whore, they added some more of those too.

Used console game sale at GameFly and Best Buy Posted: 11 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST If you like to thumb through a hoard of fire-sale videogames at the local Walmart, we've got the perfect sale for you. The classic pastime can now be done digitally today at GameFly's new Used Game Blowout Sale. They've just discounted about 120 games to under $20, with many titles tying holiday low prices. Below we've listed some of the better picks of the bunch (in our opinion) but if nothing catches your fancy you can always check out Best Buy's "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" pre-owned videogame sale with a whopping 4,700 titles to choose from.
Meta Knight amiibo now has a solid release date of February 20 at Best Buy Posted: 11 Feb 2015 09:16 AM PST Just minutes ago I obtained an email from Best Buy noting that Meta Knight has a firm release date of February 20. Before today, the retailer skirted around giving us an exact figure, even showing "December 2015" dates for pre-orders. If you want him, get ready to head to the store in the morning to see if there are any extras in stock, or potential snag a few loose pre-orders online. If early reports are to be believed, Meta Knight will be just as rare as Shulk -- there may not be any in-store stock at all.
Mother 3 hot springs man lovingly recreated with polygons Posted: 11 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST YouTuber KamiWasa created a short animation of the mysterious old man from Mother 3, who is sometimes seen hanging out in the hot springs. It's just a quick loop of the man appearing and disappearing, as he often does, and using his signature catchphrase, "Yes?" It's a silly video, but it makes me happy to see Mother 3 rendered in 3D, complete with the soothing hot springs music. The Mother series is already perfect in pixel form, but it would still be fun to see the games done up in polygons. I mean, Mother 3 was almost an N64 game, after all. I hope we see more stuff like this from KamiWasa and other fans. Maybe they could do an alternate version with the hot springs lady saying, "Mixed gender bathing?"
Yup, the next Mass Effect will have multiplayer Posted: 11 Feb 2015 08:45 AM PST Chris Wynn, developer of the upcoming Mass Effect (not Mass Effect 4?), has more or less confirmed that the next installment will indeed have multiplayer. Wynn posted on Twitter that the team is currently looking for an online producer. The job can be seen here on EA's careers page. Excited? Surprised? Eh, I'll hold off on any real emotions until we can actually see what we're working with here. [Via NeoGAF]
New PBS Digital show Space Time! asks what planet Super Mario World takes place on Posted: 11 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST I always enjoy PBS Digital's Game/Show as a source for smart commentary on the culture surrounding games. The whole videogame thing must be good for views, because the first episode of newest show Space Time! is all about Mario's jump height in Super Mario World. The series is meant to focus on astrophysics in general, but what better way to get people watching at square one than to tap into one of the biggest cultural icons of the past few decades? It worked to get it on the front page of Destructoid, at least. In the episode, astrophysicist Gabe Perez-Giz discusses the calculations involved in going from measurements of Mario's jump pattern to finding the acceleration due to gravity (denoted as lowercase g) on the planet. It turns out that in Super Mario World, g is about eight times that on Earth, and Mario can only jump to the enormous heights that he does as a result of his incredible alien leg strength. But then, if Super Mario World takes place on a fictional exoplanet, why does he (kind of) speak English? Checkmate, Atheists.
Guide: Where you can import amiibo, and where you can find rares Posted: 11 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST Unless my Meta Knight pre-order is screwed up by Best Buy, I'll have every existing amiibo on-hand by next week. A lot of people have asked how I'm so successful at getting some of the rarer figures, and the answer is "helping out a lot of friends, and getting help from friends." But there are a lot of ways to procure them. Here are a few that will allow you to sidestep scalpers on eBay.
| Posted: 11 Feb 2015 07:45 AM PST If you're finding Dying Light to be a bit too much on the easy side, then Techland has heard your zombie screams and announced that they plan on releasing a free content update that will add Hard Mode. We weren't given an exact release date yet -- just that it will be released "around the start of March" or possibly sooner. In the added mode, the following changes will be made:
Techland said they plan on releasing more free content updates in the coming months, but have yet to give more details on just exactly what they will be. |
Feed your colorful soul with Runbow Posted: 11 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST If platformers and playing with a group friends is your thing, then you should keep an eye on Runbow, an indie title slated to arrive on the Wii U. This self-described action party game will allow up to nine of your friends to participate locally in color-popping madness. It's fine if you don't have nine friends, because Runbow is set to feature a single-player mode as well. In the multiplayer, players will be able to take part in a run mode, head-to-head mode, or other choices called Arena, King of the Hill, ColourMaster and The Bowhemoth. I have no idea what Bowhemoth means, so I assume it has to do with a huge ass moth or something. We don't have more details yet, but we're supposed to hear more once GDC comes around.
Cyberpunk CCG Glitch Hunter launches today on Kickstarter Posted: 11 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST Glitch Hunter is Estonia-based One More Rabbit's cyberpunk interpretation of the collectable card game for digital platforms. It's taking the project to Kickstarter today in hopes of raising the $63,000 necessary to make this promising free-to-play CCG a reality. The game is set in a futuristic, dystopian world where mega-corporations, renegade console cowboys, and vicious street gangs all vie for control of the "Hypernet," a network through which all of the world of Glitch Hunter's commerce, information, and energy is traded. Glitch Hunter will play out in real-time 1vs1 multiplayer with three available game modes: Casual, Ranked, and Jacked -- a special draft mode with an entry fee where players of similar skill levels can take one another on to earn rewards. There's also a speed chess-like modifier called the Doomsday switch; once enabled, both players receive increased resources, but the game ends if the timer runs out.
Off-screen Pokkén Tournament footage has Gardevoir-on-Gardevoir action Posted: 11 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST As a man of simple tastes, my big takeaway from Pokkén Tournament's location test in Japanese arcades was Pikachu wearing shorts, but, I get it: game mechanics are important too. This off-screen video from seadraDS has us covered with more than 20 minutes of footage. I'm not someone who's deeply into fighting games, so my main concern at this point is seeing who makes it onto the roster. We all have our favorites, I'm sure. The less humanoid, the better. Also, person in the background who kept honking during the recording? We're trying to watch pocket monsters battle here. Show a little respect for the craft! [Via NeoGAF]
First look at the Persona 5 hero's persona, Arsene Posted: 11 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST Go on, take a gander at the Persona 5 lead's persona, Arsene, courtesy of Dengeki PlayStation. The shade vaunts a top hat and ornate cravat, nods to its namesakes. It takes after Arsène Lupin, the gentleman thief depicted in Maurice Leblanc's literary works, or perhaps Monkey Punch's manga series, Lupin III, which stars the fictional criminal's similarly larcenous grandson. In any event, Arsene fits in nicely with the title's prevailing motif, and looks pretty dashing, too! [電撃PlayStation via Gematsu]
Hitman: Agent 47 looks anything but stealthy Posted: 11 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST The tone of this trailer for Hitman: Agent 47 matches my playstyle for the game series, which is to go in quietly only to screw up repeatedly and end up having to trade bullets with everyone. While I could have done without the tired "No, you're locked in here with me" line, this otherwise looks better (relatively speaking) than what little I recall of 2007's Hitman starring Timothy Olyphant. It still isn't a proper adaptation of the games, but I'm not sure that day will ever come.
An analysis of Destructoid's Twitter word clouds Posted: 11 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST In this industry, Twitter is key. A lot of appointments are made and stories are scooped on the bite-sized social network. We talk on Twitter a lot. Sometimes, it's even about videogames. There is a bot out there under the handle @wordnuvola, and it specializes in reading a person's tweets, tabulating word usage, and using the data to create word clouds that allow a viewer to visualize it all. The more frequently a word is used, the larger it appears in the word cloud. With these, you might get to know us better. Who should you follow and who should you avoid? Find out below!
Dead or Alive 5: Last Round director asks PC modders to be 'moral' Posted: 11 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST When I say "Dead or Alive PC mods," you think ___? You don't need to answer that. The series debuts on Steam this March and if mods created for past console versions are any indication, things are about to get wild. But hopefully not too wild. "We have to deal with mod issues from an IP holder perspective," Dead or Alive 5: Last Round director Yohei Shimbori told MCV. "We would like to ask PC users to play our game in good moral and manner. Otherwise, we won't be able to release a title for PC again." Wishful thinking if I've ever seen it. The Big Game: Dead or Alive 5: Last Round [MCV]
Let this Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate trailer serve as your pre-hunt briefing Posted: 11 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST It sure feels like we're saying this a lot lately, but hunting season's upon us. This time, it's the enormous beasts of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate that need to be slain. We're not shooting for "tranq and peacefully relocate" here; we're shooting for "shoot until it disintegrates" here. Seeing as it's a few days until the hunt kicks off, this video might serve as a small sample as to what to expect. Make sure to show your prospective partners too; these behemoths are too unnerving to go in unprepared.
Nearly two years later, Peter Molyneux still hasn't delivered for the Curiosity winner Posted: 11 Feb 2015 03:45 AM PST At this point most hardcore gamers know not to trust Peter Molyneux. He makes grand promises that his games will push the envelope or change your life in some way, and in a few cases, outright lies. Then he has the balls to retroactively state that you shouldn't have bought his last game, and that his next game will be amazing. We know the song and dance he performs and the brand of snake-oil he peddles. But Bryan Henderson, winner of the 2013 Curosity prize, didn't even know who Molyneux was. Now, he feels our collective pain, as he still hasn't actually received said prize. Much like our follow-up with a Nintendo Power contest winner, Eurogamer got together with Bryan recently to get his side of the story on this "life-changing" Curiosity win. According to him, he's been emailing Molyneux's developer 22Cans "every month" to see what's going on, and they haven't delivered yet. Basically, he got to visit the studio, got a signed poster and t-shirt, and then hasn't been in real contact with them since. Bryan is being a great sport about it though, stating that he "wouldn't be bothered if I'm missing out on something. Really, I wouldn't," and that he's moving on with his life. It's a shame what happened to him, as he apparently hasn't even gotten an apology until Molyneux was goaded into one by Eurogamer. Evidently since Godus is still in development and not doing as well as he predicted (this is a game that went over its Kickstarter goal by the way), Molyneux can't make any promises right now. Except, he already made a promise to Bryan. He already got his press. But most of us knew better. The God who Peter Molyneux forgot [Eurogamer]
Kickstarter for sci-fi platformer Orphan underway Posted: 11 Feb 2015 03:30 AM PST And before I knew it, Windy Hill Studio's attractive-looking action platformer Orphan had jumped from Greenlight approval on Steam to being over halfway through its Kickstarter campaign. So it is sometimes in the games writing business -- take your eyes away for a moment and something just might pass you by. However, it may just have worked out to be an opportune time to take a look at the game as the team has recently updated its announcement trailer to reflect the more action-oriented aspects of the game that weren't previously on display. To get us up to speed, Windy Hill is currently standing at $7,149 out of the comparatively modest $32,000 needed to fund the project with only 19 days to go. It's long odds for sure, but you never know with Kickstarter; the studio might just pull this thing off. As I reported while the game was in the process of Greenlight approval, Orphan is a sci-fi action platformer where you'll play the role of young boy, presumably the only survivor of an overnight alien invasion.
This Deception IV: Another Princess trailer is probably the best thing I've seen all year Posted: 11 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST Deadly toilets, nut shots, kendo athlete statues, goofy playground slides -- you'll see it all in this new trailer for Deception IV: Another Princess. It's not just silliness abound in the video though, as you'll see plenty of new traps, menus, locations, quests (that menu at 0:45 looks massive), and characters. It'll arrive in March in Japan, hopefully selling enough for a localization.
Teacart 1k game jam to build multiple games using the same save file Posted: 11 Feb 2015 02:30 AM PST Jim Crawford, best known for the notoriously strange Frog Fractions, is putting together a game jam built around the idea of creating games compatible with SHARECART1000. What's special about SHARECART1000? It is a system that allows for save files in one game to be read and interpreted in other games within the ecosystem. Some neat interactions show up as a result. Some games may feature areas that are completely inaccessible without modifying the save file in a different game and then coming back. The best-known title that works within the system is probably Kyle Reimergartin's Fjords. The Teacart 1k game jam is set to begin on Friday, February 20. When it is complete, the submissions will be presented as a collection, with each entry able to affect the others through save file communication.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's Season Pass exclusive DLC map is $5 now Posted: 11 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST If you purchased the Season Pass for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, you got an extra map on top of it called Atlas Gorge. Now, Activision has opened up its purchase for $5 as a standalone DLC. The special Atlas Gorge playlist is being removed and it's being put into the normal rotation. This is kind of odd. Call of Duty has had an "exclusive" extra map for a while now, whether it was available to pre-orders or Season Pass holders. Eventually, they'd make the map free down the road so players who didn't have it could still operate normally in standard playlists. We've reached out to Activision to see if this is just another "timed" exclusive on the sliding scale, and if Atlas Gorge will be free for all at some point. It brings up an interesting prospect though -- what if players didn't have to pay $15 for entire map packs, and could instead just buy the ones they want?
Resident Evil HD paid off for Capcom, producer thanks fans Posted: 11 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST Resident Evil HD sold like hotcakes, breaking records on PSN. As a result, producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi has created a new video on behalf of the development team as a thank you to fans. Oh, and here's a Spencer Mansion-themed wallpaper. One thing to note is that there was no DLC in tow with Resident Evil HD -- you bought it, you got both costumes for both characters, and all of the special modes. Although Resident Evil Revelations 2 will have a heap of confusing DLC, I hope Capcom can learn from this experience and keep a lid on it in the future for this series. Wishful thinking? A thank you from Resident Evil producer Hirabayashi-san, plus a Spencer Mansion wallpaper [Capcom Unity]
Strategy game AERENA is moving away from free-to-play, says fans were 'put off' by it Posted: 11 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST I am not inherently against free-to-play games. While some of them are designed just like South Park describes, as sleazy bait and switch schemes, a number of F2P titles are fair, and you'll actually get a ton of playtime for nothing. The developers of the PC strategy game AERENA, however, says that their fans were tired of it, so it's moving away from the practice in the form of the "Masters Edition." Now, there will be no more microtransactions, "faster" progression, and no more "artificial limitations." It's interesting to see a dev just come out and plainly state those last two mechanics in the open, implying that many F2P games make their systems grindier to elicit purchases (they often do). Existing owners of the original version can still play for free, or "upgrade" and get all the new fixins. The Masters Edition is live right now on PC, but the mobile version is coming on February 17. Funnily enough this game is now on my radar because of the shift. AERENA [Steam]
