The Unova starter giveaway is live in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Posted: 10 Feb 2015 02:00 PM PST The codes for Serperior, Emboar, and Samurott in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are now all redeemable. Just head into the Mystery Gift option and choose "receive via code," then type in POKEMON497, POKEMON500, and POKEMON503, respectively. These Pokémon are packing hidden abilities (Contrary, Reckless, and Shell Armor), so it's worth setting aside a couple of minutes to nab them before leaving 'em inside a box, unloved. When this distribution event was announced, I asked which of the three monsters was best, and things got weird. I expect that to happen in all Pokémon posts these days. Or all posts, really.
Sorry, Greenlight developers, no more offering Steam keys for votes Posted: 10 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST It seems as though developers pushing games through release via Steam Greenlight have been promising keys as a means of amassing votes from prospective buyers. Not that this notion is surprising in any way, but it's certainly a shady practice that Valve is now seeking to stop. In a post in the Steam Greenlight developer group, user Alden outlines the practice, where developers give away copies of their game via drawings or direct distribution in exchange for votes to get the game in question greenlit. The post details the submission guidelines for prospective developers, and states that each submission must have a gameplay trailer, four screenshots, and a written description. It also makes it very clear that gameplay is absolutely important, noting that if the game is too early in the development process for that sort of thing, you don't actually have a game at all and are promoting a concept instead. Hopefully this will level the playing field as far as what gets greenlit and pushed through the process to be listed on Steam, and make things a little fairer for everyone. @SteamDB [Twitter]
Windward: RPG lootin' on the high seas Posted: 10 Feb 2015 12:00 PM PST To a sailor, a ship represents freedom. It grants the ability to go anywhere and do anything. In Windward, players take on the role of a captain, dropped into a tropical archipelago sandbox. True to theme, there are many options for how to spend time as a captain. The video above focuses largely on ship combat. It shows corvettes zipping around dreadnoughts, each trading fire with the other. At the end of the trailer, a more serene vista is shown. Indeed, Windward is designed to allow players to play peacefully, focusing on exploration, diplomacy, and merchantry instead of piracy and combat. Windward is currently on Steam Early Access, with a planned release for the Q2 2015.
There won't be a public beta of the latest Halo: The Master Chief Collection update Posted: 10 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST The Halo: Master Chief Collection saga has been a tumultuous one. It was released back in November, and we're still hearing about fixes and updates. But there's a team hard at work on delivering a smooth experience for players, and trying to make things right. Unfortunately, it looks like we'll be in the dark a little longer as far as actually experiencing the updates being discussed. Previously, there was some talk of allowing players to participate in a public beta test of the upcoming content update, but now that's been nixed. It's all here in the latest blog over at Halo Waypoint. After determining that making a public beta available for players to aid in testing would delay the update itself, 343 Industries has pulled the plug and taken testing in-house. Due to an "extra series of required updates and rollbacks" that made the team "step back and reexamine the CU beta," it decided focusing on things with the internal team would be a better idea. And you can't fault them on that, but public input would probably have been quite valuable. In any case, 343 Industries will give us an ETA for when the update will finally go live as soon as possible. Hopefully this is quite soon, because I want to see games with issues resolved as much as anyone, and it's been a long time coming for this one. Halo Community Update 2.9.15 [Halo Waypoint]
Alien: Isolation's latest add-on serves up a gruff face to the Xenomorph Posted: 10 Feb 2015 10:30 AM PST Just like Alien: Isolation's last piece of content, the newest add-on again asks you to decide what's more important: a shot at leaderboard fame or safety? The two are mutually exclusive, and there's a pissed off Xenomorph that's coming after you regardless of which one you pick. The fourth slice of DLC for Alien: Isolation is Lost Contact, and it's another Salvage challenge. For the uninitiated, Salvage mode tasks the player with completing ten challenges with just one life in under a two-hour time limit. Points can be traded in for save slots, meaning that the final score will take a bit of a hit. Lost Contact's focused on Axel, the abrasive first human that Ripley met in Isolation's campaign. He's stranded on a remote section of the Sevastopol, and needs to find his way across it. Of course, there are plenty of lethal obstacles trying to ensure that he doesn't meet his goal. Lost Contact is the fourth of five announced add-ons to Alien: Isolation, and it launched today.
| Comments of the Week: Rhyme for Reasons Posted: 10 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST [Another Comments of the Week graces our eyes thanks to Dtoid community blogger Dreamweaver. This is a labor of love and we are all so happy to see it return. Enjoy! --Occams Electric Toothbrush] So some of you be spitting rhymes And some of you are rapping (...Okay, I'm done.) | Ride a dune buggy in Far Cry 4's 'Overrun' DLC Posted: 10 Feb 2015 09:30 AM PST Already tired of everything Far Cry 4 has to offer? You're in luck, because Overrun, the latest batch of content for Far Cry 4, is available today. This is a more multiplayer-focused endeavor, with a brand new PvP mode in which two factions (the Rakshasa and Golden Path) compete to score points across two rounds by controlling zones that are active at a specific time. Basically, if you're interested because of the name or the fact that you get a dune buggy, keep all that in mind if you're more of a "fly solo" person. Additionally, there are four new maps included. You can pick up the DLC on PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. If you've been itching to match up against other players rather than sad little AI dudes, now's your chance! |
Sneaky Ninja does stealth without any messy throat slashing Posted: 10 Feb 2015 09:15 AM PST If you played through Mark of the Ninja thinking, "This is nice, but my word, it is quite gruesome," before dabbing the corners of your mouth with a handkerchief, then Sneaky Ninja might be worth looking into. It has the bush-hiding, back-stabbing, and shuriken-throwing a stealth junkie could want, but stars cartoony potato matryoshka ninjas instead of boring regular limbed humans. The Kickstarter pitch video is a little long, but there are some neat abilities that the characters in Sneaky Ninja have. My favorite bits are when one slows down time to nail two enemies with kunai at once. Very sneaky indeed. The crowdfunding campaign is off to a bit of a slow start, with only a handful of backers pledging toward its $10,000 funding goal. If it finds success over the next month, Sneaky Ninja is planned for Linux, Mac, Windows, and Wii U.
Steam unexpectedly drops a mysterious midweek sale Posted: 10 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST We think we know what to expect from Steam at this point -- big summer sale, big holiday sale. Dropping a random four day sale in February is a bit of an enigma, a mystery if you will. That's perfectly suitable given that the theme for this discountapalooza is "mystery games." There are over 40 titles with their prices slashed, just waiting for someone to try to unravel the secrets within. But, on February 13, everything reverts back to normal as this sale vanishes without a trace. Mystery Midweek [Steam]
The Shulk amiibo will be at GameStop tomorrow, I hope you pre-ordered it Posted: 10 Feb 2015 08:45 AM PST Scores of readers are reporting that they've obtained texts from GameStop noting that their Shulk amiibo will be ready for pickup in-store tomorrow. For those who aren't aware, Shulk is exclusive to GameStop in the US -- you have to get him at one of their stores. That's good news for those of you who pre-ordered (a few of you already got yours in the mail), but I'm not hearing good things if you're thinking that you're going to walk in and snag one yourself. In addition to information from trusted sources noting that Shulk will have zero extra stock on-hand, all 15 GameStop locations that I called today stated that they "only have the stock for pre-orders, and don't know when any additional orders will come in." Start asking your friends if they have any extra Shulks now, before they sell them.
Hot Take: Nidhogg makes ritual sacrifice fun! Posted: 10 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST If you've got a lot of controllers and a lot of friends, these past couple years have been tailor-made for you. Between games like Towerfall (great), Samurai Gunn (great), Super Smash Bros for Wii U (okay), Divekick (bad), and today's subject Nidhogg, couch multiplayer (also known as "min-esports," thanks Brad Shoemaker) is back in a really big way. For my money, Nidhogg is your best bet. It's only ten dollars, there's online multiplayer, and the core is so engaging that anybody could easily pick it up and have a good time. That describes a lot of these new local multiplayer indies, to be fair, but Nidhogg is so tightly crafted that it makes everything else look foolish in comparison. (My winning streak remains unbroken, FYI)
Team Fortress 2sdays: Men, Monsters and Bathrobes Posted: 10 Feb 2015 08:15 AM PST Sunday was the Grammys, and while sadly it’s not an event for kind-hearted old ladies to have a chocolate chip cookie bake-off, it’s supposedly one of the premier music events of the year. That being said, this year the best thing of note was a guy in a bathrobe getting on stage after Beyoncé didn’t win an award. You know, Kanye, if you really want to do a bathrobe right, you might want to make it pink and fluffy. Of course, Kanye seems like the kind of guy who claims he’s too cool to wear pink, but when you tell him that he’ll go off and paint his whole house and wardrobe pink in rebuttal. Leave the bathrobe wearing to the professionals Kanye, please. Also to celebrate the release of Evolve, this weekend I’m going to get Vs Saxton Hale mode running again, just for the weekend though. Worried about people capping the point? Honestly, I’m going to allow it this time; that way games won’t go on forever with only a handful of people still alive. Now if only there was a well-made Cthulhu model for TF2…
| Sony's canceled Game Boy title would have beaten Link's Awakening to the punch Posted: 10 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST Today in cool old videogames I'm only now hearing about for the first time, we have Castaway Boy Keith, an unreleased action-RPG for the Game Boy from Epic/Sony. As much as the screenshots resemble a certain handheld Nintendo adventure, here's the weird part: Keith would have released in 1990, predating The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. According to Disgruntled Designer, the protagonist, Keith, gets stranded on an island and must collect musical notes to defeat the devil king Drakhe. What a funny name for an adventurer. | Mighty Switch Force! makes the jump to iOS with a funky trailer Posted: 10 Feb 2015 07:45 AM PST WayForward sent me an interesting note today -- Mighty Switch Force! is coming to iOS in the form of Mighty Switch Force! Hose it Down. Wait, what?! This isn't going to operate just like past entries though, as it is not a traditional platformer. Instead, heroine Patricia Wagon will don the firefighter gear she earned in the second game and use it to solve pipe-based puzzles and put out flames. It will launch on February 12 for $1.99, with an additional $1.99 in-app-purchase available for another level pack. I had a chance to play it for a bit, and basically what you see above is what you get. You can tap Patricia to shoot water, and manipulate the tiles by dragging them. It's a fun little game but it's not going to excite anyone but the most hardcore of Mighty fans. |
Jedi Outcast added to the Star Wars Humble Bundle Posted: 10 Feb 2015 07:30 AM PST Ooh, ooh! It's been ages since I've last played 2002's Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, and even then that was the lesser GameCube version. The Steam release joins Star Wars Starfighter and Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II in the pay-more-than-the-average tier of the Star Wars Humble Bundle. Currently, that's priced at $11.42. So if you haven't already caved, you might as well spring for the final, $12-or-more tier, which throws in both Force Unleashed games and Empire at War. I still need to start Republic Commando, and I will soon, but Kyle Katarn is calling my name. There's no way I'm not going to burn through Jedi Outcast's first level today.
Evolve's launch trailer means hunting season's open Posted: 10 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST Some hunt for sport. Others hunt for sustenance. And, in the case of Evolve, everyone hunts because the other side is doing their damnedest to kill you. However, just because the hunt's starting today, it doesn't mean that we know how it ends. There's a lot to learn about it, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. We still only have preliminary impressions, and we'll reserve judgment until we see it in the wild. The wild, where, again, everything tries to kill you.
| Techland releases first Dying Light DLC and gives details on the rest Posted: 10 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST Dying Light Season Pass holders got their first taste of DLC today with the release of Cuisine & Cargo. It adds two missions to the game, both taking place in buildings sealed since the first days of the outbreak. You'll get to visit a restaurant that was once patronized by the affluent, and the loading bay of an abandoned rail stockyard. For now, only those who purchased the pass have access as this DLC is not available for separate purchase. Techland also gave details on the remaining DLC:
These don't seem like a bad deal, but also don't seem to really expand the game all that much. I was hoping for another campaign, or a new section of the town, but with Techland releasing mod support, who knows what will come out from the fanbase. The season pass can be had for $19.99 and includes all three DLC. |
Atari is making a new Asteroids game (Yes, really!) Posted: 10 Feb 2015 06:00 AM PST Atari just announced a new Asteroids game. No, you guys, I'm being serious. Stop laughing! Asteroids: Outpost, as it's called, is described as an open-world MMO with survivalist gameplay. The experience casts players in the role of cosmic prospectors who must defend and expand their claims. That involves shooting space rocks out of the sky and harvesting the resources within. Sounds just a tad different from the 1979 classic. Expect to see it on Steam Early Access soon.
Could this be it? A true Banjo-Kazooie spiritual successor? Posted: 10 Feb 2015 05:30 AM PST We've been let down before, but I'm unable to contain my enthusiasm for Playtonic Games' Project Ukulele, a new platforming adventure from the people we want making this type of game. Formed by six former Rare staffers, the studio includes "the bloke who programmed Donkey Kong Country, the character designer behind Banjo and Kazooie, and the artist who made your console fit to burst with lavish environments across a decade's worth of adventure games." In its debut blog post, Playtonic wrote that "...this time it's real! We're making a real, proper, actual game." The first artwork and more details will appear in Edge issue 277, which is out this week. "Over the coming months we'll reveal more about our project and future growth plans, and we very much intend to get you involved and listen to your views on our game's direction," wrote the studio. "You'll ultimately shape the destination of our project and we plan to continue exchanging sweet glances across cyberspace at you until we get there." I couldn't get enough of this genre even when it was flooded with releases. If Project Ukulele can capture a fraction of the magic of Rare in its prime, we're in for something special. Bring it on.
Go out in a blaze of glory in RIVE's latest teaser Posted: 10 Feb 2015 05:00 AM PST "Mistakes are the portals of discovery" -- James Joyce Admittedly, it's a bit late in coming, but I just couldn't let this latest teaser trailer from Two Tribes' fantastic-looking "Metal Wrecking, Robot Hacking Shooter" RIVE slip by without dedicating a post to it. It's just that damned good. It's titled "Enthusiasm," and in it the team illustrates several of the many, many ways that players can fail spectacularly at playing the game to hilarious effect. RIVE is currently scheduled for release in Q1 on Steam, PlayStation 4, Wii U and Xbox One.
These custom Little Mac and Pikachu amiibo are insanely detailed Posted: 10 Feb 2015 04:30 AM PST Every so often the custom amiibo crowd wows me, and that's definitely the case with this wireframe Little Mac from "peble," pictured above. The detail is insane, and the clear resin to give it that translucent look is an amazing touch. Also, professional custom creator Evilos has debuted his newest creation, Starry Night Pikachu. Evilos is also responsible for the CosmicSamus amiibo, another awesome figure. Finally, I personally adore GandaKris' "Blankachu."
Review: Unmechanical: Extended Posted: 10 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST Unmechanical has been available on iOS and PC for a few years now, but we at Destructoid have sadly neglected it for all that time. I have even personally looked at emails, thought "that looks neat," and then put it in the back of my mind until it was no longer relevant. It's time to rectify that. Unmechanical: Extended is out now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It features the same three-hour experience as before, with an additional episode that adds another half hour or so of helicopter robot puzzle gameplay.
| Bethesda's holding an E3 press conference this year Posted: 10 Feb 2015 03:45 AM PST February snow's still on the ground. All eyes are trained squarely on the rapidly impending GDC. Lo, Bethesda comes out of nowhere and wants to talk about E3! Los Angeles is still so many months away; just settle down. Oh, Bethesda's holding its first press conference this year. Unnecessary? We'll find out on June 14 in Hollywood. Try to contain your excitement for Wet 2 or Brink: Reloaded. Four long months until the big show. Bethesda’s First-Ever E3 Conference: Save me a Seat! | So what's the difference between the PS3 and PS4 versions of Dragon Quest Heroes? Posted: 10 Feb 2015 03:30 AM PST Dragon Quest Heroes will launch in Japan this year on both the PS3 and PS4 -- Square Enix is "interested" in a localization, but we haven't heard anything concrete yet. So what's the difference in terms of the generational gap? Well, in addition to the standard PS4 share functions, you'll be able to use a limited form of Share Play. The content will technically be the same, but the PS3 version will run at 30fps, while the PS4 edition boasts 60. Visually the current generation will have an upgrade, and display more enemies on screen. So while there is a reason to upgrade, PS3 users won't miss out on anything major. Dragon Quest Heroes [Square Enix via Siliconera] |
Rockman & Forte is coming to the Wii U in GBA form Posted: 10 Feb 2015 03:00 AM PST Mega Man & Bass, known as Rockman & Forte in Japan, is my favorite Mega Man game. It originally debuted on the SNES, but was later converted to the Game Boy Advance -- it's the latter version that will be coming to the Wii U. The GBA version is slightly worse as it has more muted colors and worse sound effects, but it still works just fine. Expect it on the Japanese eShop on February 18, and hopefully internationally sometime in 2015. Rockman & Forte [Nintendo]
Laura's Gaming Butts: Metal Rear Solid Posted: 10 Feb 2015 02:45 AM PST Hello all and welcome to Laura's Gaming Butts, Destructoid's new weekly YouTube show about butts in videogames. Yep, it's a video podcast where I get guests in to talk about butts. Professional journalism at its finest. We kick things off this week with an episode about the butts of the Metal Gear Solid series. My co-host this week is Euan Burns, contributing editor at IndieHaven.com. Now, sit back and enjoy some butts.
This Shadow of the Colossus and Mario mashup is very cool Posted: 10 Feb 2015 02:30 AM PST Artist Jason Lupas has posted a few updates on his Tumblr recently that are decidedly videogame related, and they're pretty awesome. They're both homages to Shadow of the Colossus, one of which features a Mario themed map on the back of a Shadow boss, and the other as a complete level themed after the final foe. Excuse me while I go back and play it again -- or at least, the last encounter. Jason Lupas [Tumblr]
Yep, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D sure looks like the Wii version Posted: 10 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST Want to see how Xenoblade Chronicles 3D stacks up to the original Wii version? Nintendo World Report is on the case, providing a side-by-side video of each iteration. While the 3DS port looks slightly worse, I have to say it's pretty damn close, which is quite the feat given it was a decent looking console game with a giant world. I'm looking forward to jumping into Xenoblade once again later this year, and the fact it won't be quite as rare is good news for those of you who missed it the first time.
Posted: 10 Feb 2015 01:45 AM PST Good lord, that looks horrifying. Nude Maker, um, made some monstrous prop scissors for its live-action NightCry trailer, which you can see The Grudge director Takashi Shimizu using on Clock Tower creator Hifumi Kono. There are two pairs actually, one of which is part of a $10,000 backer reward for the horror game's Kickstarter campaign. Somebody already "snapped" them up, but the project is still a far cry from its $300,000 goal, having raised a third of that amount with less than a fortnight to go. Project Scissors: NightCry [Kickstarter]
Secret Ponchos is getting free and paid DLC this month Posted: 10 Feb 2015 01:00 AM PST Secret Ponchos isn't a mind-blowing online shooter or anything, but it was available on the PS4 for free recently for Plus users, so odds are a lot of you already have it. If you haven't given it a shot yet, I'd suggest at least going a few rounds. Later this month the game will get some added support in the form of two new levels, which are free for everyone. Beyond that, two extra characters will bring the fighter count up to seven, as Gordo and The Wolf will be sold as paid DLC. All of this is coming on February 17, but the characters haven't been priced out yet. Making the maps free is a great idea to bolster player activity rather than segment it with DLC -- nice move, developers. Secret Ponchos Gets New Characters, Free Maps on 2/17 [PS Blog]
Posted: 10 Feb 2015 12:30 AM PST If you didn't know Turtle Rock Studios was the brains behind 2008's Left 4 Dead, you could probably guess as much after a few hours with its latest game, Evolve. The zombies might be gone in favor of giant monsters and lethal flora, but the basic core of the game's asymmetrical multiplayer experience is instantly familiar. Everything about L4D, both the good and the bad, is concentrated and focused like a laser beam in Evolve. As a huge fan of L4D and rampaging Kaiju-like monsters, the idea of Evolve sounded like a wish come true. But after spending some time with the game, I'm starting to worry the wish was made with a monkey's paw, and I suspect its bony digits are giving me the middle finger behind my back.
Nintendo details official process for transferring data to your New 3DS Posted: 10 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST Since the New 3DS is almost out, a lot of us are probably wondering how to copy over data from the old system -- both on-board data and save files on the SD card. The caveat this time around is that you'll need a #0 Philips screwdriver and a microSD card, rather than the easy access slot and standard SD in the "old" model. The video above will give you an idea of what to expect when you pick your new system up this week.
There's a lot of lava in Tekken 7's arcade intro Posted: 09 Feb 2015 11:30 PM PST Although I haven't gotten into the mainline Tekken games for a while (I've always favored Tag), Tekken 7 is looking pretty great. In this new intro video for the arcade version, you'll be able to see Kazuya and Heihachi face off, as well as the debut of Kazumi Mishima, a new character. Tekken 7 is currently released in arcades in limited form in Japan, with a wide release set for March -- no console dates have been set.
Man at Arms forges Auron's Katana from Final Fantasy X Posted: 09 Feb 2015 11:00 PM PST Man at Arms is a pretty badass video series that crafts fictional weapons in real life, and this time they're tackling Auron's Katana from Final Fantasy X. You'll be able to see the entire process in the 10 minute video, which condenses the smithing process. Even if you aren't a fan of the series it's still worth watching just for educational purposes.
Flipnote Studio 3D Club Nintendo parting gift delayed Posted: 09 Feb 2015 10:30 PM PST [Update: Flipnote Studio 3D is now live. Look in your "to-do" list and see this page for more info.] Ever since Club Nintendo debuted its giant list of rewards, the site has been taking a beating. It's been hard to get in at all, much less redeem any Coins. Even though the site lists them as the "final" rewards, never say never -- Nintendo could have a few tricks up its sleeve before it finally calls it quits. As a result, Nintendo is currently fixing the site, but that means that the Flipnote Studio 3D free game reward has been delayed. It was supposed to arrive this week, and it did launch, but it crashed the site. It will now drop "later this month," so keep your eyes open. Flipnote Studio 3D [Nintendo]
IronFall: Invasion is basically Gears of War on 3DS, here are some details Posted: 09 Feb 2015 10:00 PM PST February 13 is a huge day for Nintendo. In addition to some amiibo launches, you'll also be able to pick up a New 3DS, Majora's Mask 3D, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, and now, IronFall: Invasion in Europe. The latter is basically a Gears of War-like experience that was unveiled years back for the 3DS, pushing the system to its limits. Now that it's set for next week on the eShop, we have a bit more detail as to what to expect. In addition to 60fps gameplay (without 3D), there will also be online multiplayer and a campaign. It will sport a free-to-play scheme that has the first level and limited online play, but you can purchase single or multiplayer separately for $9.99 each. It's an interesting prospect, with an 11 level story and six player online play, as well as C-Stick and Circle Pad Pro support. The developer has recently noted that it should arrive in the US this month.
PSN maintenance coming February 12 Posted: 09 Feb 2015 09:00 PM PST Planning to play your PS3, PS4, or Vita online this coming Thursday? Well, you should probably be aware that there's going to be around three and a half hours of PSN maintenance starting at 9am PST/ 12pm EST/ 5pm GMT. Fear not, as you may still be able to access online services if you're lucky. If you sign into PSN before the maintenance starts you should be able to play games online still, though you won't be able to access the PlayStation Store or your Account Management functions. If you're planning on playing your PS4 online, it will need to be your primary system.
Review: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Posted: 09 Feb 2015 08:15 PM PST Ah, Monster Hunter. A game that ends up being more of a culture than anything else. These have always been games about community and self-improvement. Getting better isn't measured in some arbitrary number, but how well you can execute your talents. It also helps that as you get better your gear becomes increasingly more badass. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate doesn't tamper with the classic formula too much, but the additions here are certainly nothing to ignore. New weapons, new mechanics, and an incredible amount of monsters makes Ultimate more than just the "same old thing."
