The Witcher 3 team recorded 16 hours of motion capture for sex scenes

Posted: 01 Feb 2015 02:00 PM PST

Do sex scenes in videogames ever arouse you or do they just look like two action figures rubbing their crotches together? Or both? If you're said "yes" or "both" to those questions then you're in luck. The upcoming action RPG The Witcher 3 will have plenty of sex in it. While we don't know how many hours of coitus will actually occur in-game, we do know that the developers recorded 16 hours of just simulated sex motion capture footage for the production. We'll see soon enough how many of those throbbing, grinding, groaning animations make it into the final release.

On top of that, the game opens with a sex scene, but that's not just for shock value and or titillation points. Oh heck no. According to senior designer Damien Monnier, that first sexual encounter is there for "...establishing that your character was intimate with this woman recently in order to plant in your mind that, at very least, he must enjoy her company. Through sex we have shown that this is a person who Geralt would be compelled to chase after if she went missing. Sex is the quickest way in which to establish the relationship and provide a justification for the player to pursue this woman. We couldn’t just tell you to go find someone you don’t know or care about. It wouldn’t work."

Does that sound off to you? I know a lot of people who have sex with folks that they don't like that much, let alone care about. Besides, there are plenty of other ways to establish a relationship and/or motivation for rescue other than porking. For instance, take a look at Taken, or even Tak3n. No porking there, but emotion to spare.

I'll reserve judgement for after The Witcher 3 is actually out, but in the meantime, I can't help but think Mr. Monnier would have been better served by stating that he just loves watching his characters screw and be done with it.

These Czech PlayStation ads make me feel like a criminal

Posted: 01 Feb 2015 11:30 AM PST

These ads come from not too long after the Iron Curtain became the Iron Drapes, and Western culture began flooding the former Warsaw Pact. It's obvious that there was still a little bit of a learning experience going on in 1996 as far as marketing electronics goes. However, I believe more things are going on here than meets the eye. It seems the ads tell some sort of story.

From left to right in the gallery:

  • A man pointing a gun: He says, "Do you know PlayStation," and the text at the bottom reads, "at your own risk." This one doesn't really make sense (to me), until you see the next ad.
  • A sexy biker boy: Ol' long, tall, and greasy here is looking a bit nervous as he exclaims, "No!"
  • A bloodstained wall: Someone has been killed here, and the text states "Well, now he's dead."

Taken individually, these make absolutely no sense. When you put them in order though I believe you get the story of: A Czech male in search of a PlayStation finds a vacationing American. The Czech, knowing the American must have a PlayStation because he is a filthy, rich Imperialist who is only in the great Czech Republic to steal their women, demands a PlayStation. The American exclaims that he does not have one. The man shoots the filthy American pig, and the point is made to carry PlayStations at your own risk because they are valuable.

What a window into the past these ads are!

Sonic, nipple slips, and Super Bowl gaming memories

Posted: 01 Feb 2015 11:00 AM PST

Ah, the Big Game. The NFL championship. The Big Gambino. I'm just sitting here enjoying a brewski and last night's pizza watching big men beat up on each other and it's pretty good. Of course, like usual, I'm sitting beside the TV remote so I can mute commercials and I'm looking forward to turning the TV off completely during halftime.

I like football. I don't like the pageantry so much. I don't like the frenzied two week Super Bowl lead up. I don't like the commercials. I don't like the NFL, as an organization, because it is evil. The NFL is the reason for the pageantry, the two weeks of hype, the commercials. For convincing you to watch commercials during the Super Bowl "because they're actually good." They're fucking commercials, guys. Come on. When you don't end your sport with seven game series, you have to make that last one count, no matter how obnoxious.

It is the 11th anniversary of Super Bowl XXXVIII. For football reasons, it is important to me. It is the second Super Bowl win in the Patriots' fragmented dynasty. Like the first (and next one), it was won with a last minute field goal.

The first Patriots Super Bowl win came 13 years ago at the expense of the St. Louis Rams, the team I root for despite never living anywhere but San Francisco. It was played in the swamp (Louisiana) and  I watched from the snow somewhere in northern California. The 2003 season that preceded Super Bowl XXXVIII is the last time the Rams were a good team. They lost a heart breaker of a playoff game in double overtime to the Carolina Panthers, the team that would go on to lose the championship to the Patriots. It's some mild magical realism of connectivity. I watched the whole thing at a gym, not knowing the team I pulled for would descend into a decade plus of being pretty unwatachable.

Super Bowl XXXVIII has a much wider cultural relevance, though. It was the year of Janet's Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction," the nipple slip, during the halftime show. Even then I couldn't stand halftime and I had left to go play Sonic Heroes (which, incidentally, would be the start of Sonic games turning to crap). I've still not seen that nipple.

Oh. Look. The quarter is ending with a last-second, game-tying touchdown as I wrap this up. That means it's halftime. And time for me to turn the TV off and go play something for a bit. What are you playing?

The hunt for the Rosalina amiibo is on today, here's what I found

Posted: 01 Feb 2015 10:49 AM PST

[Update: according to this leaked document by CAG user Kurosaki-san, there will be no more Rosalina shipments for Target for the foreseeable future. The exact wording is that "this item will not be replenished." We've reached out to Target and will update with any pertinent info we obtain.]

With the Target exclusive Rosalina amiibo pre-orders selling out in the dead of night within minutes and my Japan import is currently stuck customs, I still needed to snag one. So this morning I woke up with a fellow local amiibo enthusiast and decided to head to a few Target stores at opening to see what I could find. I ended up getting one Rosalina in total, but my results were mixed.

I had gotten a tip that one store roughly 30 minutes away would have 26 in stock and I'm lucky I went to that one. The line was pretty small as we arrived 20 minutes before opening, consisting of only three people in front of us. 10 more ended up showing up by the time the doors were unlocked at 8AM EST.

Techland using DMCA claims to take down Dying Light mods

Posted: 01 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST

With Friday's Dying Light Patch 1.2.1, Techland has "blocked cheating by changing game's data files," which makes it considerably harder to create mods for the game. The patch affects single-player as well as multiplayer, so if you're looking for the same mod-friendliness that Dead Island had, then you're out of luck.

The company has gone a step further than just patching files to be harder to mod. Techland, via its partnership with publisher Warner Bros. (an ESA member), is filing DMCA claims against any Dying Light mod they find through MarkMonitor. One user slapped with a takedown request on a mod that disables the film grain effect posted the notice on reddit.

Previously, Techland had embraced the mod community, to the point where it stickied the mod thread on Steam's Dead Island forums. In fact, Techland's upcoming Hellraid started as a weapons mod for Dead Island produced by an employee. It seems odd that it would be so opposed to a segment of the community adding replay value to its product.

This full remake of Resident Evil 2 in Unreal Engine 3 shows some real dedication

Posted: 01 Feb 2015 08:30 AM PST

While Capcom is spinning its wheels on the series (although Resident Evil HD Remastered was good and Resident Evil: Revelations 2 looks promising), YouTube user Rod Lima has finished a complete remake of Resident Evil 2 in Unreal Engine 3.

Working with the free version of the Unreal Development Kit, every background and model has been polished or recreated entirely and coded into a remarkable project. It's hard to believe that many of the models and animations are actually modifications of the original, but according to Rod, most of them were lifted straight from the retail copy.

Rod stated that it all started when he wanted to learn how to use the Unreal Engine to create games, and expanded from there. Unfortunately, due to copyright, he doesn't plan to release the game, but the video above contains Claire's A scenario from start to finish.

It would be nice if Capcom hired someone like him, and got back to the basics of the series. As much as I loved volcano Wesker, it's the mansion and the R.P.D. that's stuck with me.

Sup Holmes touches down with the creator of Particle Mace

Posted: 01 Feb 2015 06:30 AM PST

First, get warmed up with All Cyrax wants to do is dance. After that, come back here to meet its creator, Mr Andy Wallace. Andy's got a few commercial games out too, like the beautifully animated Extreme Exorcism, the starship brawler Particle Mace, the prop-powerd card game Musclebound Glory, the Horse_ebooks Talker Augmented Reality app, the dreamlike Indiecade 2012 finalist Find Me A Good One, and a lot more.

I'll also be showing Andy my new Toon Link amiibo, so make sure to tune in at 4pm EST for all the fun.

The Sup Holmes Bowl kicks off with Starr Mazer Vs. Always Sometimes Monsters

Posted: 01 Feb 2015 04:00 AM PST

[Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on Youtube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.]

Today is the Super Bowl! I read somewhere that something like 40% of the people who watched last year's game don't care about football, and only watched the game for the "commercials and the cultural significance". I wonder if that's what Sup Holmes needs to become billion dollar enterprise? Should we add commercials? Will that get us the cultural significance we need? Would that be the best way for us to compete with Football Day for your attention?

Maybe it'll be smarter for us to cater to the folks not planning on watching the Super Bowl today. For you, we have two lovely prerecorded episodes of Sup Holmes to enjoy, from two different development teams that have both managed to channel their raw need to create into videogames that defy convention. Above we have Don Thacker from Imagos Games, director of the upcoming title Starr Mazer. Don is easily the most verbose and positive developer we've talked to since Lorne Lanning, and if you watched Lorne's episode, then you know that's no small feat.

Below we have a talk with Jake and Justin from Vagabond Dog, creators of Always Sometimes Monsters. The tone of that conversation offers a stark contrast to Don's episode, but many of the underlying themes are the same -- being a slave to the creative process, galvanizing a team behind your vision, subtly speaking to your audience about ethics and humanity in ways they may not be aware of on the surface, and a lot more.

Thanks again to Don, Justin, and Jake for being on the show, and if you want even more Sup Holmes on your Sunday, we're going live with Andy Wallace of Particle Mace at 4pm EST. Maybe then I'll stop working for a few hours, but probably not!

Geoff Keighley says Metal Gear Rising 2 rumor 'is not true'

Posted: 01 Feb 2015 02:30 AM PST

Notorious videogame journalizer and all around nice fella Geoff Keighley just tweeted a tweet that's sure to put a frown on the face of many Metal Gear fans. Keighley has reportedly spoken to Ken Imaizumi of Kojima Productions who have confirmed that the tease at the Taipei Game Show was not for Metal Gear Rising 2. When asked what the "2" was referring to, Imaizumi-san went on to tweet "We don't know. Sounds like it just a countdown number '2'. It's SCE made trailer."

If memory serves, Keighley was involved with the VGAs where The Phantom Pain was first revealed as a not-Metal Gear game, so I'm not entirely sure we can trust him on this one. Who could blame him if he was working with Kojima on some elaborate prank or playful piece of misdirection? I will not be at all surprised if we hear from Kojima in a few weeks that the Taipei tease ".. was not for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance 2. It was for Metal Gear Fukpocolypse 2 Explosicide, an upcoming title from Platinum Games starring Raiden where he cuts guys' heads off after he's already cut them in half. We hope you enjoy it."

We've reached out to Keighley, Kojima and Sony Computer Entertainment for comment.

If you pre-ordered Lucario at Toys"R"Us, it should be shipping soon

Posted: 01 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST

Last week, Lucario went on sale at Toys"R"Us retail locations. By all acounts, it was a mess. Luckily I didn't have to deal with it as my previous pre-order was re-instated, but multiple sources informed me that stores typically only had a few units in stock in-store, which scalpers picked up immediately.

Until today, online orders were basically at a standstill, leading to a lot of nervousness as to whether or not Toys"R"Us had sold through the pre-orders. Luckily I just got a notification that my items are "located," and that shipping is imminent -- so if you haven't gotten your email yet, you may want to call. After contacting Toys"R"Us directly I was informed that Lucario should ship out in the next few days, and I should expect it to arrive between 2/4 and 2/9.

People who pre-ordered Lucario as a solo item will likely get it first, though. Many other Wave 3 figures like King Dedede, Sonic, and Mega Man don't ship until a week or two after Lucario, so if Toys"R"Us decides to bundle all your items it will come later.

That's two exclusives down -- two to go with Best Buy's Meta Knight and GameStop's Shulk.

Beard View: Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind

Posted: 01 Feb 2015 01:30 AM PST

Our beard buddy Jed is back with another look at a game you may have heard of, but probably haven't played. This time we have Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind, the Japaneses 3DS exclusive based on the popular anime and manga. Rumor has it that Atlus will publish the game outside of Japan eventually. That makes sense, considering the game did well enough in Japan to warrant an online-enabled expansion, and the Attack on Titan brand is pretty strong all over the world. Then again, I was also sure we'd eventually get Tobal 2 outside of Japan and that never happened, so what do I know.

The game looks OK, but it's Jed's charm that makes this one worth watching. If there are other Japanese 3DS games or other hard to find titles you'd like him to show you, let us know in the comments.
