| Fan translated all of The Talos Principle's hexadecimal messages Posted: 08 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST The Talos Principle uses several different modes of storytelling. There are the dictations from the god-like Elohim, the conversations with the Milton Library Assistant, the recordings of a bygone scientist, the QR code messages shared among others engaged in trials, and the collection of old writings found on computer terminals. The emails, websites, and literature passages found on the computer have bits of faux corruption inserted, made up of hexadecimal code. One industrious player went through the game files to translate all of the hexadecimal and posted the updated text on reddit. The original text is included for context, so beware of spoilers. Among the translations are more messages that sound like they are from Elohim. There are also a couple cheeky Easter eggs, in which developer Croteam is referenced by characters in the story. One such reference even hints at a potential time period for the mysterious events in The Talos Principle. Cool. I translated all the secret hexadecimal code hidden in The Talos Principle's terminal messages [reddit] |
| This Kaizo Mario World speedrun stresses me out Posted: 08 Jan 2015 02:30 PM PST "This is what happens when a very sadistic person gets ahold of a level editor." Some of us get a huge kick out of watching strangers overcome the odds in near-impossible games, and as far as those go, Kaizo Mario World (or Asshole Mario) is relatively well-known. Mean-spirited ROM hacks of Super Mario World make for damn good YouTube, it turns out. I've been eagerly waiting for Dram55's speedrun to show up in the Awesome Games Done Quick 2015 feed and now that it's here, I'm struggling to sit still while the madness unfolds. It's like watching that episode of Hannibal with the sewn-together bodies. "What the? OH GOD, NO!" |
| It sounds like there's another monster hiding in Battlefield 4 Posted: 08 Jan 2015 02:00 PM PST YouTube user JackFrags might just be on the trail of another hidden beast in Battlefield 4, and whatever it is, it sounds far scarier than a giant monster shark. Listen for yourself at 0:20. "I did a little snooping around in the game files," says JackFrags. "Basically selected every single audio file, added them to a playlist, and sat there, listening for an hour (cause I'm a massive nerd) and that one came up and completely took me by surprise. That's definitely not a sound I've heard before in-game, and it sounds amazing." This mystery is far from solved, but fellow Easter egg hunter Element of Progress was able to find references to the multiplayer map Paracel Storm in the audio file. I hope it's the famed District Dafoe out for revenge, but it'll probably wind up being a Kraken or something. |
| Devs take note: THIS is how you do a press release Posted: 08 Jan 2015 01:30 PM PST Frozen Synapse was a brilliant game when it released on PC in 2011. Its brilliance has since been ported to the iPad and now, the iPhone. To celebrate, the game is on sale on Steam! It's easy to recommend to anyone who loves to see the best-laid plans of mice and computer men go awesome and exactly how they planned it. But that's not what I'm focused on here. I'm focused on the press release and accompanying trailer that Paul Kilduff-Taylor, developer at Mode 7 Games, has put together. Just watch the trailer above; it's less than a minute, and it is flippin' wonderful. It gets the point across (Frozen Synapse is out for iPhone with PC cross-play ) and made me laugh, all in 53 seconds! Plus it has a cat! As for the press release? Well, read it for yourself. |
| Don't miss out on Steam's huge anime weekend sale! Posted: 08 Jan 2015 12:30 PM PST Valve has returned with yet another Steam sale. Prepare to be flipped upside down and have any spare coins you still possess shaken from your person. Yes, the holiday sale just happened. No, Gabe Newell doesn't care. The man has an Olympic-size swimming pool to fill with doubloons. This time around it's a bunch of discounted Japanese games with anime art styles looking to tempt us like sirens and lure us to the rocks. Dammit, Valve, you know my one true weakness! Need some recommendations? Here are some recommendations that I recommend:
There's tons of other stuff too, of course. But, really, you should buy Recettear. Capitalism, ho! Anime Weekend Sale [Steam] |
| Aviary Attorney Kickstarter surpasses funding goal Posted: 08 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST Coventry, England-based studio Sketchy Logic's delightfully clever twist on the legal sim, Aviary Attorney, wrapped up its Kickstarter campaign today. The project went far beyond its modest £7,000 funding goal and topped out at £18,917, allowing the team to reach three out of the six possible stretch goals outlined on its Kickstarter page. While the project fell short of securing a full chamber orchestra to perform the soundtrack, it did bring in enough funding to cover an additional chapter featuring the extended adventures of Renard Vulpes with enough left over to hire an editor to polish up the game's writing. All in all, the Aviary Attorney Kickstarter seems to have done quite well for itself. In a brief congratulatory email with the developers today, I asked programmer, writer, and designer Jeremy Noghani what might be next for the studio. While obviously a bit early for any solid information on the team's future plans, I was exceedingly curious if Aviary Attorney might continue on as a series if it proved commercially successful; and if not, whether Sketchy Logic would continue repurposing assets found within the public domain to create exciting new experiences. "We have quite a few ideas, but we're going to focus on Aviary Attorney before thinking about sequel and spin-off potential," said Noghani. "In any case, it would be great to see some other developers experiment with the public domain." Well, I'll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed. The ideas the studio is playing with here and the characters it has constructed seem far too large to be contained within a single game. |
| Download Crossy Road from Google Play and wonder where the day went Posted: 08 Jan 2015 11:30 AM PST Hipster Whale's endless mobile hit Crossy Road was previously only available from the Apple App Store and Amazon, but now Android users can play the game through Google Play, too. I like Crossy Road, but not as much as some people. When I was flying home from Arizona last week, I had to sit next to this unsupervised kid who asked me several questions a minute about anything and everything for the majority of the flight. Eventually, he became deathly curious about which titles I had on my 3DS, so I obliged, and introduced him to Yoshi's Island and a bunch of other old, new-to-him games. Then he had me look over his iPhone library. "Oh lord," I thought. Going through the list, I recognized only one: Crossy Road. What a strange world we inhabit. |
| Transistor sells over 600K copies in nine months Posted: 08 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST Supergiant Games' sophomore release, Transistor, has sold over 600,000 copies between PlayStation Network and Steam, according to Supergiant's Greg Kasavin. "We were very happy to see Transistor selling even faster relative to Bastion during the first couple of months after its launch," wrote Kasavin via Supergiant's blog. Speaking with Destructoid prior to Transistor's release, Kasavin discussed the privileged position the team found itself in after Bastion sold over two million copies. "Very few studios, big or small, have a chance to do [make their own IP] so it's just like, you wanna keep that going." Kasavin also detailed the accolades Transistor received over the course of 2014, including Destructoid's own award for excellence in narrative design. Hooray! | Evolve's intro cinematic is a clinic in smokin' stogies like a champ Posted: 08 Jan 2015 10:30 AM PST Evolve's opening cinematic is...well, it's pretty much everything you'd expect. It's a gussied-up version of the game as if it were being played like it's supposed to. You know, a team acting as a team instead of one guy running off to do his own thing, another player idle to rack up XP, and two people legitimately trying to fight a giant monster. But, the redeeming part of this video is the obligatory grizzled old man who defiantly smokes a giant cigar in the face of danger. The last breath will leave his lungs before he puts the stogie down for good. Shine on, you crazy diamond. |
| Modders are having so much fun with Ground Zeroes Posted: 08 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST At this rate, I'll wind up double dipping with the PC version of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. We covered the mod that lets you play as designer Hideo Kojima, and the one that replaces birds with humans, but here are a few more I came across this morning that demanded to be shared. First up, Metal Gear Chico. |
| Ultra Street Fighter IV on PS4 has new content Posted: 08 Jan 2015 09:45 AM PST [Update: Sorry for the original mistype in the headline folks! The word "characters" has been swapped out for "content." The original wording was made in error.] Ultra Street Fighter IV, the latest in a seemingly never-ending* deluge of Street Fighter IV updates, is coming to the PlayStation 4 with five new characters, six new stages, and all the costumes your little heart can handle, Sony revealed today via the PlayStation Blog. We've known about this port since December when it was announced at the PlayStation Experience keynote, but this is the first we're hearing of any new content. Sadly, Gio Corsi, director of third party production at SCEA, made no specific mention of the bonus characters and stages; but they exist! The PlayStation 4 version of Ultra Street Fighter IV is currently slated for spring 2015. *Yes, I'm aware Street Fighter V is coming. This will not stop another SF4 update. |
| Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate dropped $10 before launch for some reason Posted: 08 Jan 2015 09:30 AM PST Videogames go on sale all the time, but it isn't often that we see discounts before they even launch. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate's releasing sometime in early 2015, and it already dropped $10 in price. According to a listing on Amazon, the 3DS title can be pre-ordered at 25 percent off -- $29.99 instead of the standard $39.99. Better yet, U.S. pre-orders get a free Felyne pin. The introductory price-slashing may have something to do with Capcom's fiscal reliance on the franchise. Last May, the publisher said that it was hoping Monster Hunter would move 3.9 million units in 2015. Regardless of the reasoning, this is certainly welcome news for those that are anxiously awaiting their chance to cooperatively slay giant beasts. | Final Steam Controller design to be revealed at GDC Posted: 08 Jan 2015 09:15 AM PST In an interview with GameSpot at CES 2015, Origin PC CEO Kevin Wasielewski confirmed the final version of Valve's Steam Controller will be shown to the public at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco this March. "They came out with the controller, then they got some user feedback, and they had to revamp it; they got some more user feedback and had to revamp it again," said Wasielewski. "So they went through that like three or four times. And now their controller is finalized. So now they're going to production and at GDC is when they're going to announce more stuff." "Going to production" seems to imply we might see a Sega Saturn-esque 'you can buy it right now' reveal the games industry has recently come to appreciate. Remember E3 last year? We got the Battlefield Hardline beta and that weird Dead Rising 3 DLC as they were being announced. If Valve is going into production a good two months before GDC, I wouldn't be surprised if the controller's release date coincided with the conference. | PlayStation owners loved Destiny more than any other game in 2014 Posted: 08 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST We're well into the new year, but not everyone's put 2014 squarely in their rearviewmirror. PlayStation Blog just finished tallying the votes to determine which games Sony fans were most fond of last year. All PlayStation platforms were considered, and the polls asked players to look both backward and forward. Destiny took home the biggest prize as Best PS4 Game, beating out Dragon Age: Inquisition, inFamous: Second Son, and Far Cry 4 in that order. It's not a PlayStation exclusive, but Sony certainly secured a marketing edge over Xbox on one of the year's most anticipated titles, essentially ensuring that the install base would be greater. With regard to legacy consoles, Destiny popped up yet again, but couldn't overtake the beloved Dark Souls II for Best PS3 Game. South Park: The Stick of Truth and Far Cry 4 finished second and fourth respectively, with Bungie's moon shooter placing third. As for the rest of the categories, Child of Light won Best PS Vita Game, inFamous: Last Light was elected best digital release, BioShock Infinite got the nod as Best PS Plus Game, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is the Most Anticipated Game (surprisingly, Bloodborne wasn't in the top four), and Naughty Dog was named the Studio of the Year despite not releasing a new game during the calendar year. Maybe fans are paying forward that last award and assuming that Uncharted 4 is going to be really, really great. Winners: PlayStation.Blog 2014 Game of the Year Awards [PlayStation Blog] |
| Wii U and PlayStation 4 get 10% price cut on eBay Posted: 08 Jan 2015 08:45 AM PST We've mused about this before, but usually the random unannounced deals are the most solid. A few retailers are offering good pricing on console hardware this week via their eBay storefronts -- aka outlets where they can sell for cheaper than MSRP. You'll find both Nintendo's and Sony's current-gen machines going for 10% off, with the Wii U at $269.99 and the PS4 at $359.99. While the Wii U 32GB Deluxe Bundle was slightly cheaper during Black Friday last year, it's always a treat when a discount shows up, as deals on the console are currently few and far between. Both deals offer free shipping. The Wii U is sold by Rakuten, the retailer formerly known as Buy.com. (Yep, wrap your head around that one.) Meanwhile, the PS4 is sold by Antonline. States charging sales tax on the Wii U are listed here, while the PS4's sales tax is limited only to CA. |
| These Assassin's Creed Mega Bloks were 'designed with adult collectors in mind' Posted: 08 Jan 2015 08:30 AM PST Brett told us about the Assassin's Creed Mega Bloks only to totally leave us hanging now that the toys are viewable online. Never did trust that guy. Makedonski? Obviously a phony last name. Anyway, yes, Ubisoft has posted images and details of the Construction Sets, which it says are "designed with adult collectors in mind" (but will be tempting to kids, all the same). They range from $9.99 all the way up to $49.99, in the case of the Black Flag ship, and are now available. Toys based on mature properties are a little weird but, come to think of it, Kenner's Mantis Alien was my favorite possession growing up. Still would be to this day had I not lost the damn thing. | So what's next for Dtoid video, bath, and beyond? Posted: 08 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST Destructoid was hit with a one-two punch in the past week. One of our oldest and most beloved staff members, Hamza "Cybernetic Tiger Z" Aziz, has retired his mantle of sidekick to Dtoid founder Niero Gonzalez and is off on his own path. We also lost our one and only video warlock, Max Scoville, who has taken up shop at one of the more fun videogame mega-blogs down the street. I wish I was surprised to see him snatched up by a big friendly baby and taken for a wild ride in the woods, but I knighted him for a reason. He's pretty good at that sort of thing. Max has been the center of Dtoid's video content for a long time now. In fact, some of you may not have know that Dtoid did video before Max came along, back when the likes of Jim Sterling and Anthony Burch called the Dtoid YouTube channel their home. With Max off on a new adventure, we're going to try dialing the channel back to the kind of thinking that birthed the Jimquisition and Hey Ash Watcha Playin' way back when. The plan is to pool ideas from all of the Dtoid front-page staff, and work to make YouTube more of an extension of the front page, as opposed to a connected-but-different entity. |
| These are the most popular Borderlands characters Posted: 08 Jan 2015 07:45 AM PST Per the official Borderlands Twitter account, Krieg, Claptrap, and Tiny Tina are the series' most popular characters amongst Borderlands fans. There's no clear indication which character received the most votes, but I wager Claptrap is a pretty safe bet. In many ways, this is the biggest story of 2015 for me. The story in Borderlands has never been my thing -- too irreverent for my taste -- but a lot of people really enjoy the lore and this is a fairly concise insight into what exactly people find so resonant about this franchise. Anyway, if I had to pick a character from Borderlands to award, it would probably be Dr. Zed. He's got a solid drawl to him, and I like his attitude! What about you guys, anybody stand out to you? | This Marvel vs. Capcom 2 acapella medley brings me back Posted: 08 Jan 2015 07:30 AM PST Triforcefilms' latest video involves an acapella rendition of a few Marvel vs. Capcom 2 themes, and it will definitely put you in a feel-good mood. I can vividly recall the day I bought the Dreamcast game from a FuncoLand and played it for 20 hours straight. I have no idea why may parents let me do that. I think my Dad was out of town. It's only three minutes long in length, but I love how Triforcefilms takes us [for a ride] through the intro screen into the classic fighter select menu, into a match. |
| This Freedom Wars convention-like event sounds amazing Posted: 08 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST Like many great things in life, this upcoming Freedom Wars event is Japan-only. Drat. What's Freedom Wars you say? Well it's the best Vita game released last year, and Sony seems to have some love for it too. The event is called the "Sinners Festival" in reference to the populace in the game's dystopian world, and it will be in Osaka this weekend on January 10, from 11:00 AM to 18:00 PM. You can check out the layout in the map above, where multiple locations will sell exclusive merch and provide game-related quiz programs. Apparently something will also happen during the 18:00 finale -- so we could be seeing an expansion-esque, sequel, or DLC announcement. Freedom Wars [Jp.PlayStation.com via Siliconera] |
| Xbox One inherits Rogue Legacy Posted: 08 Jan 2015 06:30 AM PST Xbox One owners can plan on plundering many a castle with their extended lineage sometime in the future. Cellar Door Games has confirmed via Twitter that indie treasure Rogue Legacy will eventually release on Xbox One. The 2D platformer that features procedurally-generated levels and an unending cast of ancestors with ever-changing traits was originally released on PC in 2013. However, this isn't Rogue Legacy's first foray outside the PC space. Last year, PlayStation 4 and PS Vita were graced with its presence. Although Cellar Door was willing to out the port's existence, those are all the known details right now. When we prompted them for additional details, the developers could only divulge that "the Xbox One port is definitely coming this year." @CellarDoorGames [Twitter] |
| Mike and Will spar with the stars in Game of Thrones Posted: 08 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST Will and I continue our journey through Westeros, but not before stopping by the throne room to have a little spat with Ma-Ma from Dredd 3D. Did you guys ever notice that 'Dredd' has three 'D's in it? That makes the title extra applicable! Anyway, we took like a solid minute to remember Tyrion Lannister's name, so in case you're wondering if this video will irritate you, the answer is "definitely." |
| Koei Tecmo delays Bladestorm: Nightmare two weeks for some reason Posted: 08 Jan 2015 05:45 AM PST I was really just looking for any reason to talk about that cyclops again, but yes, there's been a short delay for Bladestorm: Nightmare, the expanded release of Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3. Koei Tecmo has settled on March 17, 2015 for North America and March 20, 2015 for Europe. Why the extra couple weeks? The company didn't specify, actually. So take that as your cue to dream up silly explanations, if you're feeling creative. Look to the numerous screenshots of the game for inspiration. |
| Nintendo adds a number of Virtual Console games to its online store Posted: 08 Jan 2015 05:30 AM PST When I want to buy a digital game or redeem a code online for a Sony or Microsoft system, it's dead simple. I love how quickly I can punch in codes I may have obtained from a contest or a friend while I'm on the go, then have it ready for me when I get back home. Nintendo has been really slow to adopt the same concept. While it has some downloads on its site, the selection wasn't a 1:1 ratio of the eShop, which was frustrating. But we're getting there. Recently, Nintendo has added over 100 games to its listings, including titles like Mega Man Xtreme 2 on the 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Keep doing this, guys. | Seems like PlayStation TV got an unofficial price cut Posted: 08 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST We don't have much of an idea of how the PlayStation TV is doing, but retailers seem to like it at the $80 pricepoint -- $20 under what Sony is currently selling it for. GameStop, Best Buy, Walmart, and Amazon have all adopted the new $20 cut, which includes the base model of the TV, as well as the $100 pricing scheme for a controller and game bundle. The PS TV was $80 throughout the holidays, but every site stated that it was a special "Holiday Price" that would end after the New Year. I guess it kinda stuck. | So, Disgaea 5 is horny/funny s-CRY-ed? Watch the full opener Posted: 08 Jan 2015 04:45 AM PST This may be me projecting. I think about s-CRY-ed a lot. I don't know why. And it certainly did not invent the "guy with cool arm" genre. Still, the first half of this trailer reminded me a lot of s-CRY-ed, and then the second half was full of characters with weird horns (sometimes one, sometimes two), luchador masks, and all sort of zany junk. While Disgaea is "very anime," the series always does a good job at being more than that. It's often endearing and earnest, thanks to good writing and localization. Plus it has a distinctive, lovely art style--all the same reasons I liked Disgaea 4. And if you check out the gameplay trailer, Disgaea 5 looks pretty nuts. It's coming to Europe and North America this year (3 Anno Luigi). |
| Falcom RPG Brandish crawls to PSP, Vita next week Posted: 08 Jan 2015 04:30 AM PST Brandish: The Dark Revenant is finally coming to PSP in North America next Tuesday, January 13, publisher XSEED Games announced today. It will be compatible with Vita and retail for $20.
The role-playing game, developed by Ys and The Legend of Heroes studio Nihon Falcom, first came to North America in 1995 for SNES. A PSP remake was released in Japan in 2009, which has taken nearly five years to reach western shores. Better late than never, XSEED. Improvements in this version include "smoother gameplay, revamped boss battles, enhanced graphics, newly arranged music," and a new post-game mode wherein players take control of Dela Delon, Ares' sorceress arch-rival, to venture through ten extra challenging levels. |
| My daughter could probably beat you at Mario Kart 8 Posted: 08 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST Last month, my family and I were at our local mall doing some holiday shopping. As we were walking through the mall, we noticed a large gathering of people who were playing video games. Upon closer inspection, it turns out that our mall (Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg, IL) was host to one of the many Nintendo Mall Tours that were going on around the nation. Well, being the Nintendo fanboy that I am, I absolutely had to stop by to see if there were any free goodies that I could get my hands on. The space was set up rather nicely. There were several Wii Us and 3DSes on display, all readily available and all showcasing different Nintendo properties. Hyrule Warriors, Captain Toad, Pokémon, and a variety of other games were on the “smaller” televisions, while Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and Mario Kart 8 were set up as more “event” style displays. |
| Ninja Theory's Hellblade is coming to PC Posted: 08 Jan 2015 03:45 AM PST The new game from the makers of Enslaved and DmC will be coming to PC, possibly with 4K resolution and full mod support, according to PC Gamer. It was previously announced only as a PS4 release. Ninja Theory head Tameem Antoniades told PC Gamer that consoles are, "years behind what things like Steam are doing. "If we want to do an open beta right now, it’s a little bit trickier to do that than on PC. Playtesting is a huge thing for us. Usability testing, getting people hands-on to try things out, get feedback, then roll that back in and improve the game... it’s always been essential for us to do that." It's not too surprising that this isn't exclusive to PS4, especially with Ninja Theory working to deliver to the PC crowd recently, from the PC version of DmC to the late PC port of Enslaved. Even if the latter was sort of bunk. Hellblade is coming to PC [PC Gamer] |
| Nintendo Download: Mega Man Battle Network 2 Posted: 08 Jan 2015 03:30 AM PST It's not a huge day for Nintendo consoles in terms of the eShop, but I'll take it. On the Wii U we're getting Mega Man Battle Network 2, Maze, Wipeout 3, and Chariot. The latter is a fun little co-op game that can also be played solo. The 3DS is getting equipped with Adventures of Lolo, Best of Solitaire, Painting Workshop, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. No, TMNT is not a Virtual Console release of the NES game (that would be awesome, as it's sadly been removed from the Wii VC due to a licensing expiration), it's based on the new series. Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is also 25% off until January 22. |
| Blacklight developer Zombie Studios closes doors Posted: 08 Jan 2015 03:15 AM PST Zombie Studios, the developer behind Blacklight and responsible for launching the Spec Ops series, has stated they are shutting down operations after more than two decades in the industry. The announcement comes by way of a brief note on the Zombie Studios website, explaining that the company's owners are going into retirement and taking the studio with them. It's usually such a bummer when a studio decides to close (and there is no doubt some of that emotion being felt by fans of Zombie's games), but I actually feel pretty good about it. This wasn't precipitated by a wave of layoffs indicating that the business was in dire straits and had no choice but to close, all too often the case. While it may seem like a shock, it's still something of a high note. I like the idea of seeing something end because it was the right time for it to do so, and it so rarely seems to happen. And how often do you hear about retirement in this game? Almost never. Blacklight: Retribution will live on, with that property (along with some other work the studio had been doing) transitioned to a new studio formed by now-former Zombie employees, Builder Box. |
| Sony delays PlayStation 4 and Vita launches in China Posted: 08 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST Sony planned to release PlayStation 4 and Vita in China this Sunday, January 11, but that's no longer in the cards. According to a Famitsu report, the electronics giant has postponed both launches "due to various circumstances." A new date has yet to be announced. Microsoft pulled a similar move back in September, issuing an eleventh-hour delay on the eve of the country's Xbox One launch. The company released the system the very next week and sold over 100,000 units by early October. Maybe the wait for PlayStation will be similarly short-lived. 中華人民共和国におけるプレイステーション各商品の発売が延期に [Famitsu] |
| Mafia II voice actor spills the beans on possible Mafia project Posted: 08 Jan 2015 02:30 AM PST Mafia II was released in 2010 to a decent amount of acclaim, and since then fans have been waiting for news of another entry. We may have gotten a hint this week, as a voice actor for the series, Rick Pasqualone, recently chatted with fans on Twitter and talked about the Mafia franchise for the first time in ages. Responding to a fan, Pasqualone stated, "Thanks. Might have some Mafia news very soon!" By "soon" I am assuming E3, as 2K tends to have a gigantic presence with this series at the event. We'll see soon enough. Rick Pasqualone [Twitter] |
| Bungie's Holiday gift for Destiny players was...a random legendary weapon Posted: 08 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST Before the end of 2014, Bungie tweeted out that players would obtain a "small, but legendary" gift for their Destiny accounts. Most people presumed that it would be a Santa hat consumable of some sort, like the Halloween items. The gifts have started to roll out, and they happen to be...a legendary weapon -- one gift per account. I don't think anyone expected anything more, but there you go! I assume that it wasn't given in Engram form as it could have become an Exotic. I obtained a 331 Solar Sniper, and promptly broke it down. Thanks for the Energy, Bungie! |
| PlanetSide 2 PS4 beta confirmed for January 20 Posted: 08 Jan 2015 01:30 AM PST After a series of delays, the PlanetSide 2 beta will be coming this month, as promised. It will be a beta of the closed fashion, and will essentially stress test the servers and "other aspects." Executive producer Clint Worley also wants you to chime in on how the game feels, and if the DualShock 4 is utilized in the best possible manner. Did you miss your shot to sign up? You still have a chance right here. While it's taken quite a while to get this on the PS4, I have a feeling that it will significantly bolster its stable of games as more and more fans get addicted over the coming months to this free-to-play title. | Rockman Go Go is a new Mega Man game...only for South Korea Posted: 08 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST Rockman Go Go is out this week, and it's a new Mega Man game. Kinda. Sorta. Most of you won't care about it. It's an officially licensed title released only in South Korea by a studio called Jenoi, and it hit the Android marketplace. Interest waning? I figured. Well the interest meter is about to hit zero, because it's not only a runner, but it's a Temple Run clone as well, and straight-up re-uses many Mega Man Powered Up assets. Well...at least it looks better than Xover. Rockman Go Go [Google Play] |
| This Flappy Bird clone was written in under 20 lines of code Posted: 07 Jan 2015 11:00 PM PST When Flappy Bird left its mark on the world last year, it was glaringly obvious that it was a simple game. However, to the layman, there's rarely an apparent connection between the presentation and the amount of developer coding required. That "simple game" could require tens of thousands of lines of code as far as most people know. Well, Flappy Bird was likely less convoluted than that, given that someone's essentially recreated it in exactly 18 lines of code. Okay, actually less than that because the last line is dedicated to a Douglas Adams quote. The clone, which is appropriately and uncleverly named Crappy Bird, isn't quite as refined as the original, but the sentiment's there nonetheless. It's interesting to think of Flappy Bird as a new de facto of sorts for beginner game development, possibly replacing Snake as the go-to easy-to-make videogame. And, for those with only a rudimentary understanding of programming languages, it's a neat look at the sort of stuff that makes beloved games run -- even if it is just the smallest sliver. | AGDQ 2015: This man plays Tetris better than you do anything Posted: 07 Jan 2015 07:00 PM PST This, kids -- this is what happens when you sell your soul to the devil in exchange for Tetris immortality. There simply has to be some sort of higher power at work, or some kind of black magic in play. Otherwise, I have no reasonable explanation for how someone gets this good at something. Awesome Games Done Quick 2015 yet again lived up to its name as player KevinDDR smashed Tetris: Grand Master 3 into oblivion. Seriously, it gets so fast that pieces just appear at the bottom instead of scrolling down the screen. But, he handled it with about the same amount of stress and anxiety of someone lounging at a five-star resort. Then, the blocks turned invisible because the game thought that might make KevinDDR finally fail. Hahaha, yeah right. |
| Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition will make Nintendo a lot of money Posted: 07 Jan 2015 03:45 PM PST Leave it to Mario and co. to get me interested in the Japanese mobile sensation Puzzle & Dragons. I mean, that Fist of the North Star tie-in had my curiosity, but not like this. Nintendo and GungHo Online are bringing Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition to 3DS on April 29, 2015 in Japan. If this is your first time hearing about these role-playing puzzle games, frankly, the footage above should be plenty sufficient. You build out a team of familiar faces from the Mushroom Kingdom (say, for instance, six Bloopers because you're cool) and match tiles. Fun. Given Mario's worldwide popularity, I have to imagine this will be localized for Western markets. Talk about an easy in to attract audiences who, like me, would otherwise never touch P&D. |
