This Metal Gear Solid Codec theme makes me want a smartwatch

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST

This super-cool Metal Gear Solid Codec watchface by njdom24 is the most powerful argument in favor of smartwatches I've seen yet. For a moment there, I was excited. Real excited. Then I looked up what it costs to own the device in question, a Moto 360, and reality sucker-punched me.

If you've got one, you know what you must do: represent!

Heh, Bloodborne's Messengers sure are dapper

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 10:30 AM PST

Instead of writing messages with a soapstone like in Dark Souls, we'll rely on these spooky little fellows, the appropriately-named Messengers, to communicate with other Bloodborne players and see visions of how they foolishly rolled off some cliff. Happens to the best of us.

Now, this isn't our first glimpse of the Messengers looking all dapper, but it is our best yet. While the little guys don't normally accessorize, they're willing to make an exception for owners of Bloodborne's Nightmare Edition, which, dang it all, isn't coming to North America.

Maybe the "Top Hat" skin will be offered as DLC eventually. I need this in my life.

These Killing Floor 2 screenshots are not for the faint of heart

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 09:30 AM PST

Anyone that's familiar with Killing Floor could have probably predicted that its sequel would be equally violent and blood-soaked (if not more so). These fourteen screenshots do a fine job of affirming that suspicion. So, good guess, Guy Who Doesn't Go Out on a Limb with His Predictions.

Killing Floor 2 doesn't yet have a release date, likely because the developers are hellbent on making the entire game look like The Shining's elevator. While they're at it, they might want to put a caution sign on those blood-drenched stairs; that's a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Absurdly tough I Wanna Be The Boshy looks effortless in this speedrun

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST

Here's speedrunner witwix playing I Wanna Be The Boshy -- a precision platformer meant for so-called "humans" who find I Wanna Be The Guy, one of the most challenging games ever devised, too easy -- for the charity marathon Awesome Games Done Quick 2015.

He pledged to donate $10 to the Prevent Cancer Foundation every time he died in this hour-long, 100% run of a maniacal game that requires pixel-perfect jumps and a hell of a lot of patience.

Here I am, 32 minutes in, terrified for witwix's bank account despite his mastery. Simply captivating.

Bit.Trip studio Choice Provisions teaming up with Intel for skeleton astronaut game Laserlife

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 08:45 AM PST

Choice Provisions has been teasing Laserlife since the studio was called Gaijin Games. Back in 2010, Jonathan Holmes talked to Alex Neuse about the idea, but the trail went dark for a few years after that. Last year when the studio changed its name, it mentioned that the game was still in development. Today, we have something more concrete: Laserlife will release on PC this year, with "additional platforms" following.

Given that it was an idea based on gesture control, it makes real sense that Intel is backing the project for use with its RealSense technology, which is Intel's response to Microsoft's Kinect. Intel seems to be pushing RealSense for gaming, having recently taken on There Came an Echo, another title set for a 2015 release.

The teaser above shows off a more developed art style than we had seen previously, but if you want to get a better idea for how it might play, the old teaser is more informative. Both feature floating skeleton astronauts, but the old one also has atoms and lasers too.

First screens of Tales of Tales' Sunset look groovy

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 08:30 AM PST

When we last talked about Sunset, it was just beginning its Kickstarter campaign and its fate was unclear. It ended up gathering more than twice its base goal, and developer Tales of Tales started work on it, releasing a teaser trailer the following month.

Sunset is billed as a narrative-focused game with decisions that impact the story. While that may sound like something we hear a lot from games whose decisions don't actually have much overall impact, the bit that has me hopeful that Sunset will deliver is its playtime. It is planned to run anywhere between one and a half to six hours. If protagonist Angela just goes about her cleaning business, things will presumably be short. If she skulks, snoops, and gets involved, then different events will occur.

Anyway, the first batch of Sunset screenshots are now available, and they exude a distinctly 1970s feel. Must be all the brown. And the wavy furniture. Check them out below.

Review: Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST

When I was younger, Duke Nukem 3D had a "parental lock" option with a passcode. Naturally, as any inquisitive child would do, I backed up my save files, uninstalled the game, re-installed it, and set up a new jibberish password that way my parents would assume they forgot the code or there was an error with the game.

With or without the adult content, Duke was one of my most cherished shooters. Although it is decidedly dated by today's standards, its massive 10-weapon loadout featured a ton of diversity, and the environments contained some of the best hidden areas in the genre, even today.

It's a bit of a relic, but Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition is an endeavor worth pursing if you have any interest in first-person shooters, and can deal without a handful of modern conveniences.

2015 Independent Games Festival finalists named

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 07:30 AM PST

We're a couple months away from March's Game Developer's Conference, where everyone has to travel to where I live (uh, the city, not my home) and I just get to roll out of a nice non-hotel bed and make my way to appointments. One of the staples of GDC is the Independent Games Festival, at which Lucas Pope (Papers, Please) cleaned up last year. You almost felt bad for him having to keep walking up and accepting awards.

The IGF has named its finalists from nearly 650 entrants. The nominees for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize (last year, $30,000) are:

I've only played Invisible, Inc. out of the bunch, but I liked it enough to give it a Steven Hansen's Destructoid's 2014 GotY award despite it not being out of Early Access yet. And I've only heard good things about Talos Principle, 80 DAYS, and This War of Mine. Metamorphabet seems like a weird Sesame Street app, which I am also okay with.

Honorable mentions include: Donut County (Ben Esposito); Endless Legend (Amplitude Studios); Killer Queen (Joshua DeBonis & Nikita Mikros); Shovel Knight (Yacht Club Games); The Sailor's Dream (Simogo); and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (The Astronauts).

Swery's 2014 games that I haven't completed, but think are amazing

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST

[Swery is the man behind Deadly Premonition and D4. The latter has kept him busy over the last year, so he hasn't been able to finish every game he loves. But love is not finite, finished, and with an eyebrow game this on point, Swery's offered to tell us all about the games he loves anyways - Steven Hansen]

At first, I'd just like to make one thing clear. I think that all the games on this list are excellent, top-quality games. I haven't completed them due to personal reasons, and this in no way affects my evaluation of them. I love all games from the bottom of my heart.

AGDQ 2015: A crazy difficult and intricate Super Mario Bros. 3 glitch that clears the whole game

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 06:45 AM PST

The Awesome Games Done Quick conventions are always full of memorable highlights for the gaming community. Timeless classics cleared with mind-blowing proficiency. What's not to love about that?

Speedrunner mitchflowerpower completed his warpless any-percentage play of Super Mario Bros. 3 (which was fascinating in its own right), before asking if he had time to take a three-to-four minute long-shot crack at a convoluted glitch. When done correctly, it's supposed to send you directly to the final screen where you save the princess.

The odds of success weren't high though, as mitchflowerpower described it as "one in a billion chances of working." That makes sense given the incredible precision required. It starts right around the 54-minute mark. You can probably guess the outcome given that it's being posted, but it's pretty marvelous to watch first-hand.

Xbox dethrones PlayStation as porn console king, Wii grows 69.9% (nice)

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 06:30 AM PST

Pornhub, which I am told by other people familiar with the webpage is a site for viewing adult, pornographic films, has released its statistical year in review. It's not as detailed on the videogame console side of things like last year's data, which we covered here deeply, but the infographics are still interesting, particularly as porn terminology is hilarious in the abstract.

Teen, lesbian, and milf all retained top search billing, for example, but "step mom" pole vaulted into the top 5 worldwide search terms (number 2 in the US) and "step sister" into the top 15 worldwide (the biggest ranking change, going up 53 spots in 2014), top 10 in the US.

Back to the videogame side, there's been a shift. The 2013 numbers attributed 55% of console porn viewing to PS3 users (compared to 39% on Xbox). 2014's numbers have Xbox at 45.7%, PlayStation at 40%. The Wii (8.2%), Vita (5%) and 3DS (1.1%) finish things off.

That marks a 69.9% increase in the Wii's market share, which is funny 'cause that's a sex number. Because these numbers are a percentage of a shared whole, it doesn't mean fewer PlayStation users are using their consoles for porn (plus, this is just data from one porn streaming service, of which I am told by people familiar with them there are many), but it is likely that a lot more Xbox users are using the service, which would account for their turgid, swollen numbers.

RuPaul on drag, games, and those who fear a changing world

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST

RuPaul has taken just about every form of media by storm. Film, music, talk shows, reality shows, live performances, comedy, drama: You name it, Ru's tried it. Now she can also scratch game development off the list as well.

Dragopolis 2.0 is a "drag puzzle-action game filled with stunning fashion, challenge, levels, outrageous humor, and more." Yes, in a move that few expected, Dragopolis 2.0 combines aspects of pinball, Bust-A-Move, something akin to Street Fighter X Tekken's gem system, and an evil super villain who hatches a plot to steal all the cutest outfits in town. This may be the closest thing to a Bayonetta puzzle game we ever see.

No one would accuse RuPaul of shying away from self promotion. Thankfully, she was willing to take the time to answer a few of our questions regarding her game, the parallels between videogames and drag, and her similarities with Sonic the Hedgehog. Her answers were relatively brief, aside from the one about Sonic. That one seemed to strike a chord for some reason.

Well, crap: Witcher 3 PC requirements released

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 05:45 AM PST

For some reason, I assumed I'd be able to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PC and have it look and run alright, but these newly-released system specifications suggest otherwise.

Minimum System Requirements

  • Intel CPU Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz
  • AMD CPU Phenom II X4 940
  • Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 660
  • AMD GPU Radeon HD 7870
  • RAM 6GB
  • OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)
  • DirectX 11
  • HDD Space 40 GB
Recommended System Requirements
  • Intel CPU Core i7 3770 3.4 GHz
  • AMD CPU AMD FX-8350 4 GHz
  • Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 770
  • AMD GPU Radeon R9 290
  • RAM 8GB
  • OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)
  • DirectX 11
  • HDD Space 40 GB

There's time to upgrade, at least -- game doesn't release until May 19, 2015. I'm starting to think that getting it on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 will be my best bet.

Broken Age to get retail release in Spring 2015

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 05:30 AM PST

Today, Double Fine and Nordic Games announced a retail version of Broken Age, the Tim Schafer-led adventure game funded through Kickstarter. The boxed copy will launch alongside Broken Age: Act 2 in Spring 2015 for PC, Mac, and Linux, and will feature new German voice acting.

For those of you who have purchased the game through Steam or some other digital outlet, you will receive Broken Age: Act 2 as a free update. The game will also be ported to the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita alongside the free Act 2 update and the retail release. There are currently no plans for retail PlayStation copies, according to Double Fine's Greg Rice.

Some of you may recognize Nordic Games as the folks who purchased most of THQ's remaining assets (like Darksiders and Destroy All Humans) in a court-mandated auction two years ago. In July of last year, Nordic picked up the THQ trademark with the intent to use it. It currently remains to be seen whether Broken Age will be the first new game to be published under the THQ banner since the publisher's collapse.

Tearaway is back with a cameo in Joe Danger 2 for PS Vita

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 05:15 AM PST

Before No Man's Sky, there was Joe Danger 2, a lovable side-scrolling racing/platform game about a motorbike-riding daredevil. After appearing on Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3, the game is now primed for its PS Vita debut, set for January 13 in North America and a day later in Europe.

If this will be your first time playing, you're doing it right: Joe Danger 2 for PS Vita is the biggest version of the game yet. And it marks the return of Tearaway stars Atoi and Iota! They deserve all the love in the world, bless their little papercraft souls. LittleBigPlanet's Sackboy, the Team Fortress 2 cast, and Steve from Minecraft are also a part of the 35-character roster.

Should look slick on that gorgeous OLED screen. Runs at 60 frames per second, too.

We continue to fail at diplomacy in Game of Thrones

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST

There's nothing more difficult than diplomacy, as we found out in today's Game of Thrones installment. When a fat jerk wanders into your hall, demanding blood and some kind of weird-ass tree, you've got no other choice but to parlay.

Also, take heart! We've heard your criticisms from the early videos, and we're looking to incorporate them in future content. I guess that's what happens when you squeeze two hours of recording into finals week!

Dragon Quest Heroes up for pre-order

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 04:30 AM PST

If you're into this sort of thing, the upcoming Dragon Quest-themed Dynasty Warriors spinoff, Dragon Quest Heroes: Anryu to Sekaiju, is now available for pre-order through Play-Asia. It'll run you $66 for the PS4 version and $57 for the PS3 version if you decide to go that route. Luckily, both systems are region-free, but there's currently no word as to whether the game will include an English language option.

The latest in a series of Warriors spin-offs, including last year's Hyrule Warriors, Dragon Quest Heroes will feature staples from both franchises. From Dynasty Warriors comes the enormous battlefields, multiple player characters, and hella action. And from Dragon Quest...I dunno, there's gonna be slimes? It sure looks like a Dragon Quest game, I can say that much.

Dragon Quest Heroes will be available on February 26, nine days after my birthday, on PS4 and PS3.

Anyway, somebody needs to make Cybertron Warriors already.

Gunman Clive 2 will be delayed for several extra weeks

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST

Gunman Clive was a brief blast of fresh air on the Nintendo 3DS, before it rode off into the sunset on other platforms. A sequel was eventually announced, which has been in development for some time. We were supposed to get some sort of release date soon, but creator Bertil Horberg has found a few snags with that plan.

Horberg notes that he has delayed the game of his own accord, and has notified Nintendo of the fact. The first title launched with a game-breaking bug on a particular boss, so I'm glad he caught these issues before release.

Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition available now on PS3/Vita, free with PS Plus

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 03:45 AM PST

It's not often that I lament letting my PlayStation Plus subscription lapse, but today is one of those days. While I'm begrudgingly plunking down $9.99 of my hard-earned cash to have Devolver's Megaton Edition of the classic first-person shooter Duke Nukem 3D on my PS Vita, all of you clever, forward-thinking individuals are smugly chuckling at suckers like me, because you're getting the damned thing for free. For nothing. Zilch-o. Free-of-charge.

To add insult to injury, the generous buggers at Devolver are foisting on you the PlayStation 3 port to boot, à la Cross-Buy. Who says console gamers don't have it made?

According to Devolver rep Stephanie "All out of Bubblegum" Tinsley Schopp, the PS3 and Vita releases of Duke Nukem include "enhanced versions of Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition and three unique expansion packs as well as the original version of the classic game," plus "polished visuals, online multiplayer, and PlayStation trophies. BLAM!"

Blam, indeed. Well, there you have it. The eagerly anticipated console/portable version of the PC classic is here at last. Hail to the king, baby!

Monument Valley apparently has a 95% piracy rate on Android, 60% on iOS

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 03:30 AM PST

Although I haven't had the chance to finish it, Monument Valley is a rad indie mobile game. Sadly, developer Ustwo has shed some light on some recent sales data, and it doesn't look good. According to its numbers, only 5% of the Android population paid for the game (this data doesn't take a free promotion into account).

By comparison, the paid rate on iOS is much higher, at 40%. Many developers have gone on record noting that they develop for iOS instead of Android because of the concept of unified platforms and a higher sale rate -- so it makes sense that smaller studios may not always be keen to release on the latter.

Deception IV: Another Princess' editor mode gets new details, legacy traps

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST

Deception IV: Another Princess sounds amazing. The core game was already packed in with stuff to do, but the upcoming expansion is adding a ton of stuff as well as an all-new hero. Legacy fans have a lot to be excited about, as classic traps and characters are returning, including ones from previous Deception games and Trapt.

The "Deception Studio" editor mode is actually more in-depth than I thought, since you can use traps and objects you've obtained to create your own enemies and even name them. In essence, you can craft custom quests of your own design.

Finally, our new protagonist can physically attack enemies for the first time in the franchise's history -- pushing them into traps or stomping them on the ground. It's set to release in March in Japan on the PS3, PS4, and Vita, and if a localization is announced, it will shoot up to one of my most anticipated titles of 2015.

Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires delayed in North America and Europe

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST

Dynasty Warriors 8 was all set to debut its Empire expansion-like...thing in January, but Tecmo Koei has sent word of a delay in North America and Europe. Now it will release on February 24th in the former, and the 27th in the latter.

For reference, the game will arrive on the PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and PC platforms. Pre-order bonuses have been announced, and they're basically just extra costumes and armor sets.

I'm generally a fan of the Empire sub-series, as they tend to add a lot of worthwhile extras.

Indiegogo providing new services for successful projects

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 01:30 AM PST

Indiegogo has launched a new program, offering post-campaign support for projects which reach their crowdfunding goals.

The new service, dubbed "InDemand," allows creators to continue to accept contributions after their funded project deadline passes through their already existing campaign page, providing the opportunity to accept pre-orders and offer perks as though the campaign were ongoing.

This is a feature I expect other services will probably follow suit on. Crowdfunding platforms are a great way to raise money, but the most successful projects often resort to setting up their own sales channel to push ongoing pre-orders after their main drive is over. Eliminating that need and keeping more users within the crowdfunding site's ecosystem (while continuing to pick up that juicy commission) seems like a no-brainer from the platform's perspective and should allow creators to more easily capitalize on buzz their campaign created for their product.

What remains to be seen is the impact that these forever ongoing projects have on the rest of the Indiegogo site and all those other ideas vying for their piece of the pie. Some users have expressed concerns that the presence of InDemand supported projects could have a negative effect on campaigns which are already struggling to attract enough attention and funding to achieve their goals.

While I understand that sentiment, I can't share it. The crowdfunding platform isn't responsible for the success of a campaign; it's simply the place that hosts it and provides tools to enable success. They act as a known entity, a banner under which projects can be lent some credibility and be collected with other like products, but whether the campaign works is down to having a product people want to buy and marketing it effectively. Simply being on the platform and expecting users to find you that way is practically a guarantee of failure, and blaming post-campaign support from the platform just sounds like sour grapes.

Poi trailer offers hope for the 3D platformer

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 01:00 AM PST

This is the kind of thing I like to find when I wake up in the morning. It's a teaser trailer for a 3D platformer, Poi, and watching it makes me think that there's a bold adventure just waiting out there for me to experience. But it's really cold outside, so I'm just going to watch the video a few more times and pretend I am having an adventure (and that I am warm).

Poi is the first project from PolyKid Games, a start-up founded by Paul Ewers and Ben Gable, former Zynga employees who struck out on their own last May. Currently in development for PC and Mac, PolyKid plans to launch a Kickstarter campaign to seek more funding in the near future. With a presentation like this, they might make out pretty well there.

I tried to think about the number of recent 3D platform games and I could only come up with Super Mario 3D World. Much to my shock and horror, a scan of Metacritic had much the same result, with only a single game released in 2014 defined by the site as both a platformer and 3D. And that was AeternoBlade, a 2D game I can only assume has either been mistagged or just lazily lumped in because it features 3DS visual effects. While that cursory glance should by no means be the final word, as products of all types trickle into the market at all times, it's still quite sad to see a genre with such a vibrant history appear so neglected today.

Poi isn't likely to fix that in any major way, but I'm taking some comfort in knowing it's out there.

The best One Direction songs to describe indescribable gaming feelings

Posted: 07 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST

It's 2015. It's an age of sexiness and carelessness, a time when Snapchat and Tinder are far more popular than table etiquette apps (much to my chagrin). Yet, this blasted Internet webpage is writing about decidedly unsexy topics like Arizona. Is our target audience residents of retirement homes and scorpion-sting medical wards? No. God no.

I think it's time we freshen things up around here. According to Twitter (hey, I'm hip enough to tweet), One Direction is quite the popular topic these days. All the teens are constantly concerned with Liam's, ummm, "endowment," and how all sex is bad unless it's with Harry.

After perusing the band's Wikipedia page for two minutes, I got to wondering. What if 1D (that's what the kids call them) is really singing some well-veiled gaming anthems? Sure, on the surface, the songs may appear to be ballads crooning to the loves of their lives that week, but I'm pretty sure the love of their lives for forever is gaming.

These are the top One Direction songs that describe indescribable gaming moments, and it's definitely not a reach at tricking people on search engines. Definitely not.
