Dead State gets a new public demo and a hefty patch Posted: 31 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST Earlier this week, Dead State received its first major patch of the year and a completely revamped public demo. The game had a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012 and was introduced on Steam Early Access in February of last year, progressing to a full-release last month. The theme follows the typical "zombie apocalypse" motive and gameplay is reminiscent of Fallout 2, with turn-based combat and an overhead view. However, unlike its contemporary Project: Zomboid, it features a floating camera and 3D models, which is pretty cool. The demo is limited to the first 7 days, 18 locations, and 15 allies, but that's more than enough time to decide whether it's for you or not. After playing the demo I have to say the game is a bit rough around the edges, but anyone who is a fan of '90s turn-based combat RPGs or zombie games with something new to offer, this game delivers. Dead State is available now on Steam for $29.99. Dead State Demo Is Hammering At Your Door [Rock, Paper, Shotgun]
NVIDIA has no plans to address GTX 970 memory woes Posted: 31 Jan 2015 10:30 AM PST NVIDIA continues to shit the bed concerning the controversy around its GeForce GTX 970 video card. The company claims due to a miscommunication between the engineering and the media teams, it mistakenly marketed the GTX 970 as having a larger L2 cache (2 MB instead of the actual 1.75 MB). The results of the smaller L2 cache, which was achieved by disabling one of its 8 segments, meant that 8 of the 64 ROPs (Rasterized Operations Pipelines) were rerouted to another memory controller on the card. The problem with that arrangement is, to prevent any issues due to the rerouting, NVIDIA split the card's 4 GB of memory into a 3.5 GB partition and a 512 MB partition, only one of which can be read by the card at any given time. In layman's terms that means that for 1080p gamers, the results will probably be negligible, but for those who bought the GTX 970 to use for multiple monitors or 1440p gaming because of its 4 GBs of RAM may be disappointed. ComputerBase forced the card to allocate its full memory to a high-res multi-monitor set-up and the results compared to the GTX 980 were poor, with stuttering and slow frame-rates. While initially it was reported NVIDIA would be releasing a special driver to address some of the problems with the GTX 970's memory issues, NVIDIA later retracted that statement as the problems with the card are hardware based and not able to be remedied with a software solution. If you've purchased a GTX 970 based on NVIDIA's false advertising, AMD has dropped the price of their R9 290X card. AMD is offering discounts for those who had previously purchased a GTX 970. Now if only the company would update its AM3+ CPU line after two years of no new releases. Nvidia: We will not boost GeForce GTX 970 performance with drivers [KitGuru, TechPowerUp, ComputerBase]
Metal Gear Rising 2 might be a thing that's happening Posted: 31 Jan 2015 09:30 AM PST This image appeared for a split second in a Sony sizzle reel aired during a Twitch broadcast out of the Taipei Game Show. Sure does look like the typeface from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Nothing is confirmed, of course. But what else could it be? Check it out for yourself at 2:46:39. 台北國際電玩展:現場live秀[Twitch via NeoGAF - Thanks, Milo]
Experience Points .02: Shadow of the Colossus Posted: 31 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST Experience Points is a series in which I highlight some of the most memorable things about a particular game. These can include anything from a specific scene or moment, a character, a weapon or item, a level or location, a part of the soundtrack, a gameplay mechanic, a line of dialogue, or anything else about the game that is particularly noteworthy and/or awesome. This series will no doubt contain spoilers for the games being discussed, so keep that in mind if you plan on playing the game for the first time. This entry is all about Shadow of the Colossus, one of my favorite games of all time. Feel free to share some of your own favorite things about the game in the comments!
Today is your last day to grab The Witcher 2 and D4 for free Posted: 31 Jan 2015 06:49 AM PST Microsoft's Games With Gold promotion actually isn't too bad anymore, but this month's offerings are on their way out. MX vs. ATV Alive is already gone, but you still have time to get The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings on the 360 and D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die on the Xbox One. I highly recommend picking them both up if you haven't already, just go online and "buy" them to save for later. You can get The Witcher 2 here, D4 here, and the newest Games on Gold offering #IDARB here. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons will be available starting tomorrow, and Sniper Elite V2 on February 16th. I really liked Brothers (though I didn't cry at the end of it), so give it a shot.

Posted: 31 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST [Dtoid community blogger The Scholarly Gamer recently spearheaded this awesome new community blogging project. You should join in the fun! --Mr Andy Dixon] Thanks to everyone for all of the support for our first Destructoid Plays community event, Stories From the Apocalypse! We had a total of 33 votes, and for a while it was really close! But ultimately we can't play them all, so the winning games as chosen by the community will be... | Portal Stories: Mel mod gets a teaser, coming soon Posted: 31 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST Portal Stories: Mel is a lovely-looking community-made mod for Portal 2 that's due out sometime in Q1 2015, according to the title's store page. The lengthy 20+ level mod will feature a new protagonist called (you guessed it) Mel, who will be partnered up with an all-new personality core and will ultimately face off against a "new, still unknown threat." The mod will also feature custom story and dialogue, as well as new models, textures, animations and a really nifty-looking '70s version of the Portal gun. Once released, the mod will be free for all owners of Portal 2. After seeing this trailer all I want to do is play through the base game again using that adorably clunky-looking '70s Portal gun! |
Obscure Video Games: Mad Panic Coaster Posted: 31 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST Roller coaster riding should be in games more often. It's easy to simulate and usually a really fun part of any game that has it. A great example is Rocket: Robot on Wheels, which even lets you build your own coaster. The problem for some games is that the activity is by its very nature passive, so the developer makes it only a small part of the larger experience. Mad Panic Coaster is a 1997 Japan-only PlayStation release put out by an obscure company called Hakuhodo. It's one of the few (perhaps only?) console games dedicated one hundred percent to riding coasters. Technically, however, it plays more like a mine cart ride from a 3D platformer. The player has some freedom to steer around the track, and it's very easy to fall off. Each coaster exists in a themed world, including a beach, a forest, and the requisite ice level. While trying to stay on the track, the player must also contend with a bizarre barrage of enemies like sharks, octopi, wolves, yeti, and even Little Red Riding Hood. The only defense against these baddies is an unlimited supply of balls to throw at them. Make three trips around without getting killed, and you get to move onto the next coaster. The game also rewards you with a bizarre scene related to the stage you finished, such as a cartoony image of a disemboweled shark. The game has become a bit rare, so it's a little pricey on eBay. It's also difficult; be prepared to repeat some of these levels over and over again. Still, Mad Panic Coaster can be pretty fun, and it's completely in English. So if this sounds like your kind of thing, you might want to track it down. That said, for about the same price, you could just go to Six Flags. I'd rather skip the lines myself.
Spelunker Z for PS4 is Square Enix's latest troll Posted: 31 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST The thrill of the teaser site was intoxicating; the announcement heartbreaking. Square Enix delivered the punchline to its latest troll job today, unveiling forthcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive "Project Code Z" as a free-to-play entry in the Spelunker series. Spelunker Z is the follow-up to Spelunker HD, Tozai Games' PS3 remake of the original '80s platformer. The new subterranean adventure is equipped with six-player online multiplayer and microtransactions. Someone, somewhere might be excited about this. Maybe. みんなでスペランカーZ』が発表! 新要素を追加しPS4ダウンロードタイトルとして配信 [Famitsu]
Posted: 31 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST [Dtoid community blogger SeymourDuncan17 remembers a pioneer in the machinima scene. Rest in peace, Kitty. --Mr Andy Dixon] [Image credit: SpikyMilkshake] This has been the hardest blog for me to write. Even though I have the motivation and the energy, writing about death isn't an easy thing. What's there to be said that hasn't already been said? God forbid I were to type up something I thought was delightful comic relief, only to seem classless or at least a little inappropriate. I mean, death is a very very sad thing and, no matter how often it occurs, it continues to surprise and remind us all of the frailty of life. That nobody, not even those of us that our loved by hundreds, thousands, or even millions are impenetrable. More specifically, this blog is about a YouTube user by the name of kitty0706. I don't know about you or anyone else who may happen upon this blog, but between 2009 and 2012, this person meant quite a lot to me. Unfortunately, after what was, no doubt, a valiant, two-year fight against leukemia, at the all too young age of... well, all I've been able to research was that he was born in 1994. So, whether he was 20 or 21, that is just too fucking young. Goddammit. God-fucking-dammit.
$8 Valkyria Chronicles, $20 Isolation, & More 2014 Game Deals Posted: 31 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST Gallia, to arms! Several 2014 releases dropped to all new lows this weekend at GMG's "2014 Revisited" PC game sale. Leading the pack today is the Valkyria Chronicles PC port, which finds itself 50% off with a stacking code dropping the price to $8. Other notables in the sale are Alien: Isolation, Wolftenstein: The New Order, and The Evil Within - all at or near their previous lowest price. Despite reverting back to its original price on January 4th, most retailers are still trying to offload the Xbox One AC Unity bundles at the $349.99 price this week. With Dell tossing in a free controller charging station ($25 value) to move some systems. Also available are $50 discounts on the PS4 and a $40 off price break for a Wii U 32GB Deluxe bundle. We're pulling this out of the rumor department, but we suspect some of these systems will see permanent MSRP cut soon in the near future (probably Spring/Summer 2015).
