The 'Pac-Man pair' attempts to break Smash Bros. doubles

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST

The honeymoon period for Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS and the Wii U is just about over. Some of the people who said a month ago that it's the best game ever made are now starting to come out with emotionally charged complaints, like the roster isn't as good as Project M or Brawl, that it's a pain to unlock all of the custom moves, that the single player component is lacking, and other niggling gripes.

My thought is that if there is ever a completely perfect Smash Bros. game, then we'll just have less to look forward to in the inevitable follow up. I love the new Smash, I'm already excited about the next one, which I expect to see in stores sometime in 2021. Hopefully we wont have to wait that long for Nintendo to patch out this exploit for doubles Pac-Man players, allowing them to use their Up-B to go so far off screen that they can't be hit by most characters. Ness, Pit and Mega man could probably tag them with projectiles, and Shulk, Kirby or Villager might be able to soar high enough to knock their blocks off, but even then, what a pain in the neck!

While this trick may not be as unstoppable as it looks, it's still a bummer to see these kinds of cheap (but admittedly funny) tactics make their way into the latest Smash. I'll be awfully sad if this brand of Pac-Man doubles play starts to flood online For the Glory battles. That said, if you're looking for an easy wins in doubles Classic, Master Orders, or Crazy Orders modes, this may be a skill-free way to get ahead.

What the heck is going on with this Hyrule Warriors concept art?

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 08:30 AM PST

The Hyrule Warriors strategy guide came out a while ago, so this art isn't exactly news, though it was news to me as I stumbled upon it earlier today. It doesn't look like many others have taken note of this bizarre sketch from the "Linkle" page before now. Other than this small mention on Tumblr, it seems like the internet passed this one over, probably too distracted by the enticing prospect of  a "Link with boobs" to take notice.

There is certainly a lot to take notice of here. As you can see, Link is savagely cutting off a Bublin's arm, only to have its blood fly in a magnificent art over his head, and fall into the waiting arms of a half naked lady coming out of his shield. At least, I think that's what's going on here. Other interpretations of the image include "That lady is made out of demon blood" and "She's turning his juice into power, naturally". I guess the "true character of a woman who supports Link" is a some sort of vampire spirit that soaks up the carnage that's left in the wake of mass murder? Also, it looks like Bulblins have pee for blood.

This idea wasn't a total one-off goof either. Nintendo was committed enough to the concept to draft up a at least one more piece of finished art for their mystical, mostly nude shield lady. Maybe was meant to be the Warriors' bloodthirsty answer to Fi, Link's passionless, no nonsense sword familiar? With one big round of Hyrule Warriors DLC left to go, I can't help but hope that Nintendo sees fit to follow through with that concept. We'll be asking them on Monday for more details on this strange idea.

In the meantime, what should we call this new friend to the Hyrule's greatest hero? Hemoglobinymph? Menstruelda? Chances are Nintendo won't tell us a whole lot about this unused character, so we might as well call her whatever we want.

Weekend Deals: Mass Effect 3, Syndicate and Crysis 3 all under $4

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST

It's a new year (uh, yay). And while yesterday marked the end of the Steam Holiday Winter sale, some deals are still active at select retailers.

Just yesterday GMG launched an impressive "Play More, Pay Less" sale featuring hundreds of titles under $5. This sale could almost be called the "Under $4 sale" because GMG also has a 22% off coupon that stacks on top of the instant savings. Most games in the sale are Indie titles, but also included are a wide range of EA AAA titles from years past such as Mass Effect 3, Syndicate, Command & Conquer Ultimate Collection, and Crysis 3.

Two other sales worth noting are at GameStop and Origin. Origin's "Year End Sale" will run through January 5th and includes the best discount ever on Dragon Age: Inquisition, now down to $39.99. GameStop's PC Gaming Winter sale still has several PC Gaming bargains worth browsing, including $5 Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition and $3 Borderlands 2.

Game deals brought to you by the crew at Dealzon. FYI: Sales from certain retailer help support Destructoid.

Assigning New Year's resolutions to major videogame studios

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST

It's an annual tradition: Making resolutions to kick off the New Year. There's a whole new arbitrary set of twelve months in which to better ourselves. Or, you know, make the same mistakes we made in the last dozen. It's finally time to quit smoking or start going to the gym. Whatever.

Here's a bunch of words about what videogame companies should do to shape up in 2015.

People are soloing Dragon Age: Inquisition's multiplayer mode on the max difficulty already

Posted: 03 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST

If you're having trouble with something in a game, never check the forums. It will just rub salt in the wounds.

I picked up Dragon Age: Inquisition over the holidays and have been logging some time in the game's multiplayer mode. As a veteran of Mass Effect 3's weird cooperative horde mode, I thought I was prepared for whatever dungeon crawling shenanigans Inquisition would throw at me. I was wrong. I've spent more time cleaning the floor of the dungeon with my face than I have fighting the forces of evil.

Wondering what I could do to better my chances, I checked out the Bioware forums, only to find out there are people like user Mr-_-Zero who can solo the entire map on the hardest difficulty setting. While I'm struggling to even get a few licks in on the final boss before he flattens me on the lowly Routine difficulty, this guy is just manhandling entire elite spawns on Perilous himself

The worst part? The dude's not even max level.

If anyone needs me, I'll be trying to unlock an Arcane Warrior to copy his build with. If that doesn't work, I suppose there's always suicide.
