| More games need cupcakes as playable characters Posted: 28 Jan 2015 02:30 PM PST I'm a jerk who totally forgot about The Behemoth's Game 4 despite playing a fun chunk of the tactical role-playing title alongside its narrator, Will Stamper, and loving every minute of it. So to selfishly put it back on my mind -- and to give you a swift reminder as well, if you're in the market -- let's look at some cupcakes. They're a healing unit type, and you can deck them out with accessories like lemon meringue or a piece of waffle cone. What a swell game. At PAX East, The Behemoth plans to show off the recruiting mechanic, which lets you capture the last enemy standing in a battle. It's the thing that pushed Game 4 onto my most-wanted list. | Silence is coming to PS4...an adventure game, not the lack of sound Posted: 28 Jan 2015 01:30 PM PST Adventure game developer Daedalic's latest effort is getting all gussied up and 3D looking. Silence: The Whispered World 2, sequel to 2010's The Whispered World is coming to PC, Mac, and Linux early 2015 and was recently announced for PS4 as well. The team achieves this look with a technique where you "place 3D objects and 3D characters in 3D environments, but then project 2D art on everything." The invetory-free, puzzle-heavy adventure game has you switching between 16-year-old Noah and his 6-year-old sister Renie as you try to escape the world of Silence. |
Nintendo YouTube Creators Program goes beta Posted: 28 Jan 2015 01:25 PM PST If you happen to be a scorned YouTuber who fell victim to some copyright drama with your Nintendo-related material, then you'll be happy to know Nintendo has a solution for you: The Nintendo Creators Program. Now in its Beta form, this is the company's official YouTube revenue sharing program for nearly all Nintendo-related content that fans want to use. Here's how Nintendo describes it: "In the past, advertising proceeds that could be received for videos that included Nintendo-copyrighted content (such as gameplay videos) went to Nintendo, according to YouTube rules. Now, through this service, Nintendo will send you a share of these advertising proceeds for any YouTube videos or channels containing Nintendo-copyrighted content that you register."
Give me Shelter (and all its cute animals, too) Posted: 28 Jan 2015 12:30 PM PST Shelter 2 is putting you higher up on its gorgeous food chain. The first game had you playing as a badger and it seems like no one wants to be a badger. So for the sequel you are a lynx, just trying to raise your family--something we can all relate to. Oh, and it's out in February. Hooray.
I can't even play Demoman this well in my dreams Posted: 28 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST I've contemplated returning to Team Fortress 2, if only for a few matches, but I'll probably get my ass kicked. After watching this skillful highlight reel from Demoman player Kaidus, I'm sure of it. This guy knows what you're going to do before you do.
A new Tetris Grandmaster has been born Posted: 28 Jan 2015 11:30 AM PST Kevin Birrell, who goes by the alias of KevinDDR, has joined the few, the proud, the Tetris Grandmasters. He is only the sixth person in the world to ever accomplish this feat, which should already give you an idea as to how ridiculous it is. The run begins at around 2:24:00 of the Twitch stream, though that's just the final level. Evidently, to even get to the qualifying round of the Grandmaster rank, Mr. Birrell had to achieve the best possible rank in four of seven of his previous games. Then, he had a chance to enter the qualifying round for Grandmaster. It all culminates in invisible flippin' Tetris, in which he must perform a certain number of tetrises in order to achieve the ultimate rank. According to people who know way more about this than me, Mr. Birrell just barely made it through! The reaction captured in the video is guaranteed to bring a smile to any face. Such pure joy! Congratulations to KevinDDR!
Amazon looks like it's upping its PS4 bundle game Posted: 28 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST Two weeks ago, PlayStation announced that moving forward, all PS4s would come bundled with a copy of The Last of Us: Remastered. Amazon's taking that one step further and packing in yet another game at half price. Right now, it's the game du jour, Dying Light. A new PS4, The Last of Us: Remastered and Dying Light are all bundled up for $429.99 -- approximately $30 cheaper than they'd be a la carte(ridge, RIP). Intuition tells me that this might be a new trend for Amazon. It'd be fairly simple to throw in the latest big hit to move some consoles. However, Amazon has more up its sleeve than just a PS4 package. Not since the holiday season have we seen great gaming deals from the online retail giant, so some of these are a welcome addition. They won't set the world on fire, but they're good for saving a buck or two, or snagging that new Mario amiibo ahead of time.
Sony cuts YouTube, Maps app on PlayStation Vita Posted: 28 Jan 2015 10:30 AM PST Sony is removing PlayStation Vita applications! Get out your torches and pitchforks! The company announced today the portable's Maps app and some features of that Near social network thing nobody ever used are going away in a firmware update this March. The YouTube app will follow suit on April 20, though you'll still be able to stream video via the Internet browser. Bet Sony figures most folks are doing these things on mobile phones and can't justify the upkeep. PlayStation [Twitter]
Already done everything in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes? Try rolling everywhere Posted: 28 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a short game. After you have a good feel for what you're doing, you can run it over and over, experimenting all the way. Eventually, you'll know it like the back of your hand (assuming you know the back of your hand quite well). That's when you can get creative and silly. Like, beating the whole game from a prone position and rolling everywhere. It'll probably be easy for me; I used to be the (self-appointed) somersaulting champion of the world. But, Snake barrel rolls more than somersaults, so that's a whole new challenge I'm unfamiliar with. Also, he shoots amidst all his tumbling. I know when I'm bested, so that's a biathlon trophy that I'll gladly forfeit.
Custom Mewtwo amiibo even has its own box Posted: 28 Jan 2015 09:45 AM PST Reddit's Tomcat1994 has gone the extra mile with this custom Mewtwo amiibo, giving the man-made pocket monster a man-made box, too. Check the whole gallery here. The custom amiibo scene is definitely the neatest part of this fad. And can't help but give props to folks selling their custom amiibo online. All those disappointed folks missing out on stock of those rare toys need a consolation buy. By the way I am selling custom amiibo. They look like the Nintendo toys I buy for $1 in Chinatown, but they're not, and I'm selling them for only $20 each! My custom Mewtwo Amiibo. It works with Pokemon Rumble U, and is by far my most favorite custom [Reddit]
Cha-ching: It now pays to create content for non-Valve games on Steam Workshop Posted: 28 Jan 2015 09:30 AM PST To date, some 1,500 users have earned a collective $57 million from Valve for creating custom in-game content for titles like Team Fortress 2, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Up until now, only the company's titles have supported this kind of payout, but that's changing. Chivalry: Medieval Warfare and Dungeon Defenders Eternity are the first third-party games to have "revenue-generating" curated Workshops. It's taken Valve this long to face "the sheer number of challenges required in order to scale to a global audience of creators and players." Two down, countless more to go. Valve expects additional Workshops to roll out paid support for creators in the "coming weeks and months." For now, it's launching improved tools "that enable contributors to view real-time sales data for their items as well as view detailed per-item revenue breakdowns and historical statements." Hop to it! Build an empire. Content Creators Earn Over $50M Through Steam Workshop, Can Now Earn Money in More Games [Steam]
Aion update looks to ease the devil's RNG Posted: 28 Jan 2015 09:15 AM PST I have a dirty little not-so-secret secret to tell you: I was a GM for Aion for about two years. What did I learn in all that time? That gamers can be the most gracious and little pieces of shit on the planet Earth. One of the main complaints we'd always hear about was how harsh the RNG system was. This is because when you attempted to socket a manastone (basically stat upgrades) in a weapon or piece of gear, if you failed, that manastone and all other stones currently equipped on that gear would disappear. While hardcore MMO enthusiasts see a system like this as par for the course, today's modern gamers just don't have time for that. It was a brutal system. I saw it first hand and I understood players' frustrations. Well, with today's update, it seems Aion wants to change things up a bit and give players more of a chance to succeed. From now on, if you fail a manastone socketing attempt, then only that manastone will vanish.
Mutant Mudds Super Challenge coming to Wii U, 3DS Posted: 28 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST Renegade Kid has announced a new project, Mutant Mudds Super Challenge. According to studio co-founder Jools Watsham, the upcoming Wii U and Nintendo 3DS platformer isn't so much a direct sequel as it is a "stepping stone" to an eventual Mutant Mudds 2. The experience is targeted at players who mastered the original game, hence the name. The studio is also developing a Dementium: The Ward remaster, retro platformer Treasurenauts, and plans to release the three remaining episodes of Moon Chronicles on 3DS next week. This sort of juggling act has landed the developer in hot water in the past. Last year, Renegade Kid focused on a new project, Xeodrifter, in favor of previously announced titles. The decision left Moon Chronicles players hanging for the better part of a year and resulted in another delay for Treasurenauts, which was originally announced back in early 2013. Curious what impact Mutant Mudds Super Challenge would have on Renegade Kid's other projects, Destructoid reached out to Watsham for comment, who offered the following: "Both Treasurenauts and Dementium are still in-development, and are on track to release in 2015." Mutant Mudds Super Challenge is also slated for a 2015 launch. Jools Watsham [Twitter]
Mario Party 10 amiibo are available to pre-order on Amazon Posted: 28 Jan 2015 08:49 AM PST Amazon's opened pre-orders for the Mario Party 10 line of amiibo. Well, almost the whole line. Mario's still M.I.A. But, Toad (the best), Peach, Luigi, Bowser, and Yoshi can all be preemptively purchased. You know how these things tend to go -- quickly. If you want in on Nintendo's new set of amiibo, you should probably act sooner rather than later. Lest you find yourself paying way too much for these things. Mario Party 10 amiibo [Amazon]
Text box attacks and more in Dragon Quest Heroes Posted: 28 Jan 2015 08:45 AM PST Dragon Quest Heroes is coming to PS3 and PS4. Non-exclusive property as it is--in fact, we've seen a lot more Dragon Quests on Nintendo consoles recently--it seems to be the PlayStation console answer to Hyrule Warriors, which Jordan is somehow still playing. I think he's even going to buy an amiibo for it.
| Dying Light riffs on Destiny's loot cave Posted: 28 Jan 2015 08:30 AM PST Destiny players have gone four months now without the comforting tedium of the loot cave -- a dark abyss that would yield decent gear drops in return for shooting at it for hours on end. Understandably, Bungie said that's "not its dream for how Destiny is played." Well, there's a new first-person shooter on the market that offers a loot cave: Dying Light. Although, this take is more of a friendly jab than anything. A player posted on reddit that he found a cave in the upper-right portion of Dying Light's map. Upon wandering inside, a message popped up that said "Your destiny is to build your legend (and get loot)." Then, swarms of zombies spawn until the game eventually says "Enough! Patch 1.0.2 is released! Do more quests!" It's not exactly the second coming of the loot cave, but it's an interesting homage. A video's already appeared online, but it's only the first few seconds. It shows up at the 1:35 mark. Then, the video fades away, much like the loot cave's unceremonious exit from so many people's lives. [Spoilers] Found a Destiny Loot Cave Easter egg in Dying Light. | BioShock creator working on a new sci-fi game Posted: 28 Jan 2015 08:15 AM PST After BioShock Infinite, developer Irrational effectively closed down. About 70 folks lost their jobs while studio head Ken Levine formed a smaller team focused on highly-replayable narrative-driven games. Recently, the process has been likened to Lego blocks, where pieces can be combined in different ways rather than entirely new assets and things needing to be built. Keep costs down. Levine took to Twitter with an open Q&A, "As an FYI, I am working on a game. Happy to answer twitter questions on it. Trying to do open dev." The game, which will likely be in first-person, is set in "a new universe, not set in any existing," and the team is aiming for, "a game with replayable narrative that can be added IN to like a [Civilization] expansion pack, vs. say a Burial at Sea." It's divided more into "chapters" than a three-act plot, and won't be in the vein of Telltale's work. It's in development for PC, set in a sci-fi or "sci-fi ish" world with a player-created main characters. "[I] think small open worldish (but not necessarily outdoors) rpg with quest structure coming from passion system." And we won't see it at this E3. "That's not the way we want to share it with people," Levine said. Ken Levine [Twitter] |
Sling TV, which brings live TV to Xbox One, is looking great so far Posted: 28 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST Earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show, Dish announced a rather interesting prospect called Sling TV. As one of the first companies to embrace Internet TV, its new subscription-based service will stream live television to a number of devices for $20 a month -- with no need for traditional cable. So how does this relate to videogames? Well, Sling TV is coming to the Xbox One in the coming weeks, and I know a lot of people are curious about it.
Xbox One bundle going for $315 on Groupon Posted: 28 Jan 2015 07:45 AM PST Groupon is running a sweet promotion this week with a two-day-only coupon that discounts 10-20% off select items. Spa packages aside, there's a hot deal on the Xbox One Assassin's Creed Unity bundle, which got discounted back to its holiday pricing of $349.99. Stack that price tag with the 10% off coupon and you'll get the system for only $315 with free shipping (unless you live in Alaska or Hawaii, in which case Groupon doesn't want your money). On a side note, if the Xbox One isn't your console of choice, the PS4 is going for $349 on Newegg's eBay store for a limited time.
Starbound update includes new race, new combat, new universe Posted: 28 Jan 2015 07:30 AM PST Wow. It has been a long time. I thought that maybe I had missed a stable update somewhere along the line, but by Chucklefish's own admission, this is the first one since last March. To take a step back, development on Starbound is a little unusual: it is currently in Early Access, and players can be traditional and wait for proper updates or opt into the unstable track that changes more frequently but may be filled with bugs. I prefer the former option, but then I haven't played at all since last May. That is going to change soon, because stable update version Upbeat Giraffe is live today, and it brings with it a huge list of changes. These changes include a fundamental difference in how the universe is laid out and progressed through, ocean world types, upgradable ships unique to each race, a hub world for taking missions, magic staves, bug catching and a ton more. Check out the Starbound blog for the full list. To commemorate the first major update in almost a year, Starbound is currently 25% off its normal price of $14.99 on Steam, and more diligent players than I have shared pictures of their houses on Twitter using the hashtag #UpbeatGiraffe. Destructoid reached out to Chucklefish for comment on a date for the final version. "Still no date for final release!" was the response.
The Magic Circle tackles game development with clever satire Posted: 28 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST You ever wonder what it's like to be a character in a videogame? Most people would think of something pleasant like Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog, not someone from Resident Evil or Silent Hill. But what would it be like to be in a game that's currently in development? One that's constantly in flux, similar to the classic Daffy Duck cartoon Duck Amuck. Would you still be you one year from now after several changes have been made? And who the hell is making all these changes? That's a scenario former developers from Arkane Studios and Irrational Games want to tackle. At PAX Prime 2014, the developers of the newly-formed studio Question brought an early build of The Magic Circle, a game within a game. Players got to experience the results of a chaotic game development period in all its gory details as they tried to set things right. It made quite an impression at the Indie Mega Booth, with attendees calling it "punk" and a neat "retro" title. We've been keeping our eye on this title ever since. Given special access to the current beta build of The Magic Circle, Destructoid had the opportunity to experience a sizable chunk of Question's upcoming existentialist adventure title.
Dead or Alive 5 will make up for its PC delay with 28 free costumes Posted: 28 Jan 2015 06:45 AM PST Dead or Alive 5 Last Round won't hit its original February 17, 2015 release on PC, as Koei Tecmo has pushed the game to March 30 "[i]n order to provide you with the best possible experience..." To that end, the company is giving away the Halloween 2013 costume set to everyone who buys Last Round on Steam. That's 28 outfits, many of them predictably scandalous. Frankly, I've got a feeling the port won't be without its issues, delay or no delay, but let's shelve that thought until launch. At the very least, the PC version of Last Round will not support online multiplayer right away -- that's supposed to arrive "within three months of release." But then again, mods. They're going to escalate quickly. Dead or Alive 5 Last Round [Steam]
Samurai Gunn gets free big update, Mac release Posted: 28 Jan 2015 06:30 AM PST Samurai Gunn is great. It's a mainstay in my living room, especially with the backwards compatible PS1 taking a dive (no more convenient Bushido Blade). I also gave it a 2014 game of the year award even though it came out in 2013 (I also did this for a game that came out in 2006, because fuck it). Developer Beau Blyth has been busy on Hyper Light Drifter, but he's still tinkering with Samurai Gunn in his leisure time. First, it's coming to Mac tomorrow, January 29. Everything that's been added to the Mac version is coming to the PC version as a free update. There's 10 new levels and 2 new modes. Master of the House cycles you through a random stage in each of the four areas, while Showdown Shogun lets you just play no bullet showdown stages. There's also a new, moonlit showdown that's quite pretty. There are other technical and polish additions. Widescreen support, better controller connectivity, updated visual effects, toggle for team killing and lives per match, and the ability to replace blood spurts with cherry blossoms, which sounds beautiful. Oh, and mysterious secrets. Exciting!
Here's a contest to design an Adventure Time character Posted: 28 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST If you've got drawing chops, or at least some creativity, you can see your work show up in the, "next soon-to-be-announced Adventure Time console video game" thanks to this contest from publisher Little Orbit. You have to at least be 13 years old, though. And, "All entries become the property of Little Orbit and Cartoon Network and will not be acknowledged or returned," so don't do it unless you're purely in it for the glory. I think Destructoid should enter, given our supreme artistic talents/hawks.
Witcher 3 may have 'Insanity' mode, deletes your save upon death Posted: 28 Jan 2015 05:30 AM PST I've always been fascinated with permadeath options in games. Witcher 3 might have a doozy. Witcher 3 senior game designer Damien Monnier and level designer Miles Tost recently streamed the game on Twitch and hosted a little Q&A afterwards, which Game Informer transcribed. CD Projekt RED is still working on the possible "Insanity" difficulty, and is considering ideas like the game automatically deleting your save data upon death. There are some other tidbits. You can still play the game and roam around the world after beating the game. Your choices from past Witcher games will be recounted towards the beginning and you can amend them how you like (if you're changing platforms). And you can meditate anywhere you start a fire, but not at a fire in a stranger's home. How respectful. CD Projekt RED Answers Fans’ Burning Witcher 3 Questions [Game Informer]
Nintendo financials: 9.2M Wii U, 1.9M New 3DS sold Posted: 28 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST Nintendo released its Q3 financials, shedding light on the performance of its properties as of December 31, 2014--so throughout the holiday season. The New Nintendo 3DS is doing well. 1.3 million of the XL version have already been sold, plus 580,000 of the smaller model for a lifetime total of 1.9 million. And this is before the handheld will be made available in the US and Europe. The 3DS sits at 50.41 million lifetime sales. Three times less than the Nintendo DS, but still pretty good, trying to at least catch the Game Boy Advance's 81.51 million. Meanwhile, the Wii U is up to 9.2 million, or half of the PlayStation 4. Oh, and Smash sold twice as well on 3DS than Wii U (6.19M to 3.39M). Maybe a chicken/egg problem, but I think Nintendo was right to lead with 3DS. Both fell short of the 9.35M sales made by last year's 3DS Pokemon remake. Sales Data [Nintendo]
Brothers and #IDARB headline February's Games with Gold Posted: 28 Jan 2015 04:45 AM PST February's a tricky proposition if you're the procrastinating type when it comes to gobbling up your free videogames. A meager 28 days means that you need to get in gear and download the new Xbox Live Games with Gold early. No depending on a 31st to bail your lazy ass out. Xbox has unveiled next month's Games with Gold, and they're mostly what we've come to expect -- a really good game, an indie title we don't know much about, and some filler. They are Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons, #IDARB, and Sniper Elite V2. Brothers is the clear standout here, which can be downloaded from February 1-15. I gave it an excellent score a few years ago and managed to still be on the low end of most outlets. I've also got your back if you need help cleaning up the Achievements. #IDARB is the lone Xbox One game. It's supposed to be zany and fun. Guess you'll have to find out for yourself. Then, there's Sniper Elite V2 bringing up the second half of the month on Xbox 360. By then, you'll probably just be looking forward to March's games. It’s Cold! Bundle Up with Some Hot Deals with February Games with Gold [Xbox Wire]
This Destiny guitar medley is pretty rockin' Posted: 28 Jan 2015 04:30 AM PST One of the best soundtracks I listened to all year was easily Destiny. For all the problems that the game had, it was a joy to listen to, especially while in orbit waiting for a group or a connection. Guitarist Ryan Abundo has compiled a few of his favorites in a medley-esque fashion, which you can check out in the video above. Even if you're not a fan of the game or its developer, it's worth a listen.
Posted: 28 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST As you may have heard, we got our Dying Light review code pretty late. As in, the day before launch. A late show doesn't necessarily instill confidence in a project, especially since a lot of fans had no idea what to expect from Techland's latest. It's strange that this situation even happened considering Dying Light is one of Techland's best games outside of Call of Juarez: Gunslinger.
League of Legends' Curse of the Sad Mummy video is depressing Posted: 28 Jan 2015 03:45 AM PST People often chide the League of Legends series for having a silly story, but as a player I dig the character fluff. Amumu has always been one of my favorites -- a sad mummy boy who just wants to find out who he really is. In this official music video from Riot Games, you can get a glimpse into the depressing life of Amumu. Like the studio's past efforts, it's actually pretty good.
Quick! Majora's Mask New 3DS, Skull Kid figure back on Nintendo's UK shop Posted: 28 Jan 2015 03:30 AM PST The much sought after Majora's Mask New 3DS XL is once again up for sale, with exclusive Skull Kid not-amiibo, on Nintendo's UK store. Grab one if you're still trying (or maybe Best Buy cancelled yours and you missed out on a free one).
Fans continue to uncover the secrets of Sonic Boom mystery patch Posted: 28 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST Sonic Boom recently got a huge patch on Wii U. Like 1GB huge, and developer Big Red Button wouldn't tell anyone what was in it. Fans have surmised some of the contents, but the hunt is still on for other changes. One of the bigger adjustments seems to be visual "enhancements" for one major cutscene, including lightning fixes and slight coloration shifts. In some ways the new patch looks worse. Somehow I feel like Sonic Boom's code is like a giant game of digital Jenga.
These Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy mashups are amazing Posted: 28 Jan 2015 02:30 AM PST Tumblr user Shattered-Earth has outdone themselves. Taking a cue from the beautiful art style of Final Fantasy, they've crafted four wonderful title cards based on a few of the core games, but with Zelda characters in tow. I particularly love the VII and Majora mashup, with the moon cleverly replacing Meteor. Pre-orders for prints are happening, and are shipping mid February. I'm really considering getting one. Shattered Earth [Tumblr]
Breaking: You can now fully copy and paste PSN codes online Posted: 28 Jan 2015 02:20 AM PST Sony's online PSN portal took quite a while to get to a serviceable state. While Xbox.com has had pretty much every bell and whistle you could think of years ago, Sony was very slow to adopt a bunch of great quality of life features that make buying and redeeming codes online easier, but they did get there. Nintendo is still light years away. This week, Sony managed to make one of my favorite innovations yet -- the single input box for online codes. Previously, Sony's system required players to put each subset of a code in three separate boxes. In other words, you couldn't just copy and paste a code and hit submit. You have no idea how much this bothered me. As of two days ago the system was still using this legacy input method, but lo and behold as I go to redeem something this morning, it's all one nice big box. It even automatically removes the dashes (audible gasp). Progress.
Sony partners with Spotify, shutters Music Unlimited Posted: 28 Jan 2015 02:15 AM PST Spotify is coming to PlayStation Network this spring, Sony and Spotify announced today. The streaming service will launch via a new "music destination" called PlayStation Music, which will allow users to link their PSN accounts to Spotify and listen via PlayStation consoles as well as Xperia smartphones and tablet devices. The exclusive partnership signals the end for Music Unlimited. Sony's on-demand streaming service will cease operations in 19 countries on March 29, 2015. As recompense for the closure, Music Unlimited users with active subscriptions will receive up to 30 days of free access and an introductory Spotify Premium trial. As was the case with Music Unlimited, PS4 owners will be to rock out while playing games, as Spotify can run in the background during your play session. PlayStation Music is currently planned for 41 markets across the Americas, Europe, and Asia, though plans for Japan are still TBA. Video Unlimited will continue to exist, but is being rebranded as PlayStation Video. According to Sony, the moves are part of a broader initiative to bring network services under a single brand.
Dungeon Defenders II is shaping up nicely on both PS4 and PC Posted: 28 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST Trendy Entertainment has already bestowed Dungeon Defenders II upon its most invested fans. In fact, they've had it for more than a month now. "Invested" is the only way to describe those people -- both financially and mentally -- as that's what it takes to pay an Early Access fee for a game that will eventually be free-to-play. But, those same fans get the privilege of seeing Dungeon Defenders II along as it's molded through the development cycle, and better yet, they'll get to help shape it too. Early adopters are "rewarded" with influence points that allow them to vote on future game features. It's unknown how far their reach has extended thus far, but someone's doing something right with Dungeon Defenders II.

Download some tavern songs from Dragon Age: Inquisition for free Posted: 28 Jan 2015 01:00 AM PST The music in Dragon Age: Inquisition is great, and now you can get a chance to sample a few tracks compliments of BioWare. Evidently the team got a lot of requests asking where to find the tavern songs in particular, and now you can grab them for free for two weeks. They've also released the sheet music for each track, so you can perform them if you so choose. It's nice to see Dragon Age back to its old glorious self again after regressing so much with Dragon Age II. Inquisition Tavern Songs Giveaway [Dragon Age]
Knight Squad was the most fun I had at PAX South Posted: 28 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST If you were to take booths' popularity at PAX South and plot them on a heat map, most of the obvious candidates would stick out. Twitch would be red hot, as it constantly had a flurry of people swarming to watch their favorite streamers. Dreadnought would be lit up too, because it was one of the largest displays and the crowd seemed to take a liking to it. But, there would be one outlier far back among the indie titles. Knight Squad, made by Chainsawesome Games, had a constant throng of people mulling about at all times. You wouldn't expect it given the location, but it was a party back there. Once you had a crack at the game, you'd understand why -- because Knight Squad is an incredibly fun multiplayer game.
Capcom: 'No plans' to release Dragon's Dogma Online in the West Posted: 27 Jan 2015 11:00 PM PST Dragon's Dogma Online sounded sketchy from its the free-to-play scheme and microtransactions angle. But I'll give anything a shot once, and who knows -- maybe it could have been great, right? Dragon's Dogma Online revealed [Eurogamer]
3DS browser exploit makes GBC roms playable Posted: 27 Jan 2015 10:30 PM PST Nintendo is a little bit useless when it comes to putting games out on the Virtual Console in a timely manner, that in and of itself is certainly not news. Since the company started dabbling with downloadable retro software on the Wii, console owners have been constantly complaining about the lack of games released at a time. "It's just a rom!!!" they shout. "How hard could it possibly be to put more of them up at a time?" Well, it turns out it's not that hard at all to get new roms running on the hardware, at least when it comes to Game Boy Color games on the 3DS. All you need is a single legitimately purchased Game Boy Color game and an internet connection.
| Ocarina of Time 3D may be out of production Posted: 27 Jan 2015 10:15 PM PST Once upon a time the 3DS wasn't doing so hot. Sales weren't great shortly after its launch, there were hardly any games for it on the horizon, and Virtual Console updates were a joke. As you can probably tell, it got much better as each year went by. Ocarina of Time 3D is a huge reason why I came to love the handheld. The touched-up visuals are absolutely beautiful, the new controls were superior to the original in every way, and the portable format was perfect for Zelda, as it has been many times in the past. Sadly, it looks like it may be out of production based on an email a gamer recently obtained from Play-Asia. According to the email, the company notes: "we have been trying to contact Nintendo about the re-stocking, and unfortunately, they have stopped production. The game is now officially discontinued." Play-Asia then tells the customer to purchase the game on the eShop with a prepaid card for $39.99. This hasn't been confirmed at other retailers, but I've reached out to Toys"R"Us, Target, and Walmart for comment. A quick glance at Amazon and a few other sites show it going for $60 used. People often lament the dawn of digital, but in some cases, it can be a good thing. Growing up since the Atari era I remember when games basically became non-existent after a few years, leaving you to fend for yourself by way of $100 or more eBay bids. | Xbox One may only achieve 900p vs. PS4's 1080p in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Posted: 27 Jan 2015 06:00 PM PST German-language magazine Gamestar recently visited CD Projekt's HQ in Warsaw, Poland and was invited to play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The publication reported the game was absolutely beautiful on the PC, although it hasn't been optimized yet so it was unable to run at max settings. Unfortunately when it comes to console though, there is a disparity between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions. While the game is capped at 30 frames per second on both systems, at the time of the article CD Projekt had only been able to achieve 900p on the Xbox One to the PlayStation 4's 1080p. Gamestar also reported that textures seemed sharper and more vibrant on the PS4, faring only a bit worse than the "High" setting on PC. CD Projekt stated that it hopes to push the Xbox One version up to 1080p with more optimization, but the studio couldn't make any promises. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt preview [Gamestar via NeoGAF] |
