| Poppin' with hunies: My virtual dates in HuniePop Posted: 27 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST I've been following HuniePop for a very long time. HuniePop is a dating sim/puzzle game created by HuniePot, an independent studio. It's available now for purchase via Steam and other distributors in both censored and uncensored versions. It's colorful and raunchy, and I've spent a lot of time with it over the past day or so after purchasing a copy for myself. After completing a couple of girls' dating paths, I've come to the conclusion that I rather enjoy it. So, with the dearth of concrete information out there on the game and articles quick to judge due to some objectionable content, I've decided to bring you this piece, which seeks to explain and narrate my time with the game. |
| Conan O'Brien wants to animate an entire episode in the style of Minecraft Posted: 27 Jan 2015 02:00 PM PST Apparently, Conan O'Brien (or at least someone on staff) is a pretty big Minecraft fan. They've had a few Minecraft-related videos in the past, including a Clueless Gamer segment where he gave the game a possibly unfavorable review. Recently, he wanted to film an episode of his show and then animate the entire episode in the Minecraft style. According to Conan, he asked "the Minecraft people" about the idea, and they initially agreed but later changed their minds. So in lieu of an entire episode, they filmed this short segment about the idea and animated that instead. Based on the clip, I'd definitely enjoy watching a fully animated episode of the show. Blocky Conan and Andy Richter are great, and I loved what they did with the audience! |
| Second Life is serious business Posted: 27 Jan 2015 01:45 PM PST The most shocking thing about this video may be the fact that Second Life is still apparently a thing. I mean, it's 2015 and there are plenty of other creepy hamlets of the Internet to get your fuck on. Why are there still people messing with Second Life? Oh well, to each his or her own. So long as the "game" can continue to give us golden turd nuggets like this exchange caught on video, then I guess Second Life remains relevant ... at least for us. |
| It looks like some Targets are selling the Sheik amiibo early Posted: 27 Jan 2015 01:30 PM PST As of right now, the Sheik amiibo is set to appear in the first round of Wave 3 on February 13, right after Bowser's launch at the start of next month. If early reports are any indication, Sheik is going to be one of the more rare ones, outside of the big exclusive four (Lucario, Shulk, Meta Knight, and Rosalina). In that case, you may want to call your local Target store as soon as possible and check to see if they have it in stock, since many locations have begun to sell Sheik as of this week. Apparently it wasn't register locked/street dated, and for reference, the SKU/DCPI number is 207-00-5024. Sheik Amiibo Available For Sale At Some Targets [amiibo Enquirer] |
| Majora's Mask 3D bosses are considerably different Posted: 27 Jan 2015 01:00 PM PST The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D is more than just a simple port. The portable remaster introduces sweeping changes, like adding fishing holes, apparently. Other things too, probably. We can't divulge everything just yet, as there's a review embargo-shaped trapdoor under our feet, but some of the alterations to boss fights have seeped out into the Internet and the world at large. While at PAX South over the weekend, I had the opportunity to demo the game, where I noticed Odolwa, the guardian of the Woodfall Temple, was a tad different than how I'd remembered. |
| Relive the era of good Star Wars games with these new releases from GOG.com Posted: 27 Jan 2015 12:30 PM PST Through Disney's generous licensing agreement, GOG.com is helping bring Star Wars memories and more back with its second wave of LucasArts game releases. These three great games became available today and for the first 72 hours are an extra 20% off:
Although these prices aren't the lowest these titles have been up for purchase at, GOG.com does have the advantage of DRM-free downloads and being a bro. Some of my first online multiplayer experiences were with Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. Connecting to the god-awful MSN Gaming Zone using a 56k modem and hoping that my mom wouldn't pick up the phone was a hassle, but few games have captured the magic of those times. There were servers filled with people formed in circles as two players battled to the death in lightsaber duels. It was a window into what games would become, and for me an iconic moment in my gaming life. |
| EA had a 'record-breaking' quarter behind Dragon Age Posted: 27 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST It was a given that Dragon Age: Inquisition was going to be a big hit for both Electronic Arts and BioWare. That's a no-brainer for the conclusion to a triple-A trilogy. But, even the publisher seems to be taken a bit aback by how well it performed. In its financials statement for quarter three of 2014, EA said that Dragon Age: Inquisition was BioWare's most successful launch ever. While a notable claim, it rang a bit hollow in a sense, as it was never elaborated upon. There were no sales figures or profit margins to substantiate it. Regardless of the specifics of Dragon Age's contribution, EA seems to have had a fantastic quarter. It came in well ahead of its projections for net income (by $153M) and earnings per share (by $.32/share). Additionally, EA says that it saw record cash flow for a calendar year period. Quarter three's performance culminated in EA raising its predicted financials for the end of fiscal year 2014. Electronic Arts Reports Q3 FY15 Financial Results [Electronic Arts] |
| 'I love this game. It's sooo awesome!' Posted: 27 Jan 2015 11:45 AM PST Techland did its best to hold off on handing out Dying Light review codes until the day before release. That's never good. But Techland doesn't need to cherry pick reviews for box quotes when it can pay for them. No, this is the future. And the future is sooo awesome! |
| Metacritic ranks the best and worst publishers of 2014 Posted: 27 Jan 2015 11:30 AM PST [Update: Included a paragraph about the mid-size publisher rankings, which I somehow missed.] Metacritic just released its 5th Annual Game Publisher Rankings, which ranks publishers based on the critic reviews for games released in 2014. This year, Nintendo came out on top for the major publishers, with an average metascore of 76.5, beating out Ubisoft and EA by two whole points. This should come as no surprise; Nintendo had a terrific year, after all, with many great games on the Wii U and 3DS. Keep in mind, sales and user reviews did not factor into the rankings. I'm sure this list would look a lot different if they had, especially as far as Ubisoft and EA are concerned. They also list each publisher's best overall release, best new original title, worst overall release, and Metacritic users' favorite title. Not too many surprises here. Best overall releases include Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dark Souls II (woo!), and a few re-releases like Rayman Legends and The Last of Us. It makes me happy to see unconventional games like Hohokum and Child of Light listed as best new original titles. Although I'm sad to see Chibi-Robo!: Photo Finder listed as Nintendo's worst overall release (which we did not even review; for shame!). I actually really liked that game! Poor Chibi-Robo... Mid-size publishers were ranked separately, with Telltale Games taking the lead with an average Metascore of 79.7, followed by Paradox Interactive and Capcom, each with an even higher score than Nintendo. Congratulations, Telltale! |
| Medieval contraption builder Besiege looks splendid Posted: 27 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST Word of Besiege has gotten to me slowly, but now that it's here, I feel obligated to pass the message on. This is a physics-driven medieval puzzle game about building killer contraptions, like this ingenious windmill on wheels, to lay waste to castles, soldiers, and livestock alike. The creation process looks intuitive enough -- you're snapping pieces together, essentially -- and I dig the basic concept. But what has me most on board with Besiege, I think, is the art direction. The tilt-shifty, "miniatures" look fits so well with this theme. Gorgeous work. There's a playable alpha build (Windows, Mac, Linux) available. It's $6.99 and currently includes 15 campaign levels, Sandbox Mode, and a time-dilation dial for slow motion (also super slow-mo). Given the game's structure, I imagine it'll be suitably enjoyable in this content-incomplete state. But if you'd rather wait, that's a fine choice too. Besiege is already approved for Steam. |
| Posted: 27 Jan 2015 10:30 AM PST Adult Swim Games has officially announced that their fantasy 2D roguelike scroller Oblitus is coming soon. How soon? Hell, I don't know, and I guess Adult Swim doesn't know either, since they're not telling us. At the very least, the trailer has some decent music and the art that has accompanied the game appears to be cool as fuck. |
| Wii U 32GB bundle returns to Black Friday price Posted: 27 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST If you missed out on Wii U sales during the holiday season, your second chance has arrived via Rakuten's eBay store page (aka the retailer formerly known as Buy.com). The Japanese-owned retailer is carrying about 2,000 units of the Wii U 32GB Deluxe Bundle for $259.99 with free shipping. At the time of writing, about 850 870 units have sold. This bundle was the same price during Black Friday and ended up being a particularly hot item, with thousands of units sold out within 15 minutes. The bundle's lowest historic price from a reputable retailer was $10 cheaper at Target (which we wrote about back in mid-December). From what we've seen, $259 will be the de facto Wii U deal price for the first half of 2015. Nevertheless, it'll be interesting to see if Nintendo issues a price drop as the system heads into its third year of existence Game deals from Dealzon. FYI: sales from certain retailers help support Destructoid. |
| Madden's predictions and my prop bets for the Super Bowl Posted: 27 Jan 2015 09:30 AM PST As it's wont to do anytime a major sport's national championship comes around, EA released a prediction for the outcome of the Super Bowl based on its season-old game Madden '15. In the match-up between two teams whose hands aren't really clean, the Seadderall Seahawks face off against the New England Deflatriots. According to Madden's simulation, New England wins on a last-second touchdown, edging last year's champs by four points. Take it to your bookie, people! That's as good as free money. Here are a few other prop bets that your bookie probably won't take because I made them up right now:
You know what they say: If anyone gives you 10,000 to 1 on anything, you take it. |
| Borderlands players: Don't go grinding purple hauls Posted: 27 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST [Update: A patch released in November added the option to grind three purples. Therefore, this is not as useless of a bug as originally thought.] Anyone that plans to hop around the moons of Pandora today might want to take some care when playing around with the Grinder. The January 27 update to Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel has an unforeseen bug that causes the game to crash under somewhat unique circumstances. As outlined in a Gearbox Software Support memo, The Pre-Sequel is liable to crash when three purple items are put into the Grinder. It's not a certainty that it'll happen; some forums users are experiencing the bug, others report no problems at all. The kicker here is that there's no use to putting three purples in anyway, as the game won't let you forge a new item from that combination. Gearbox says that it's working on rectifying the issue as soon as possible. In the meantime, those that feel the urge to needlessly grind purple after purple can simply not accept the update on consoles, or play in offline mode on Steam. | Posted: 27 Jan 2015 08:45 AM PST As a daily rider, when I first heard a game like RIDE was announced, I got a little excited. Not too excited, but just a little. Sometimes I need a virtual motorcycle fix and that's just not easy to get in a car-dominated racing landscape. While there usually are a few car racing games to choose from, the motorcycle world is often times left in the dust or treated like a second-class citizen. Whether it be tacked-on motorcycle options or overall lesser-quality games. It appears Italian developer Milestone S.r.l. is trying to buck the trend. The group has released a short glimpse of gameplay on an upcoming track called Sierra Nevada. Yes, the music is generic (and, well, so is the trailer), but at least it looks pretty. |
| Presenting Lovesick, a game about projectile wedding-night vomit Posted: 27 Jan 2015 08:30 AM PST I'm filing this one under "You'd be stupid not to cover it, Jordan." Lovesick is a simple, physics-driven two-player game for PC and Mac in which a bride and groom explode out of both ends after eating undercooked shrimp. Classic mistake. The player who lands the most "projectiles" in the toilet is deemed victorious. But really, whoever wins, we lose. I refuse to spoil the game's fabulous song selection, but know that it's on point. | Gambling, match-fixing scandal rocks highest level of competitive Counter-Strike Posted: 27 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST The world of eSports has a Pete Rose-style controversy on its hands. Yesterday, Valve levied a series of bans against Counter-Strike: Global Offensive players that were found to be involved in a gambling scandal that included match-fixing. In a post titled "Integrity and Fair Play," Valve confirms that it substantiated allegations of match-fixing between players from iBUYPOWER and NetCodeGuides.com. The exposé, which came from The Daily Dot, reports that a gambler with strong connections to both teams won more than $10,000 through a series of unusual bets. Valve's investigation led it to corroborate the claims. Subsequently, Valve has directed all CS:GO partners to exclude the following players from competing from any Valve-sponsored events: Duc “cud” Pham, Derek “dboorn” Boorn, Casey Foster, Sam “Dazed” Marine, Braxton “swag” Pierce, Keven “AZK” Larivière, and Joshua “Steel” Nissan. The E-Sports Entertainment Association has also handed down year-long bans from all ESEA majors, but the organization reserves the right to extend the duration indefinitely. Valve denounced the actions in its post, and reiterated ground rules for its game at a competitive level by saying "Professional players, their managers, and teams’ organization staff, should under no circumstances gamble on CS:GO matches, associate with high volume CS:GO gamblers, or deliver information to others that might influence their CS:GO bets." Those seven will be stuck in a long timeout to think about what they've done. Integrity and Fair Play [Counter-Strike] |
| RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 studio working on new theme park title Posted: 27 Jan 2015 07:30 AM PST I can't effectively describe how pleased I am knowing that multiple games about rollercoasters are in the works. There's RollerCoaster Tycoon World, ScreamRide, and now Coaster Park Tycoon from Frontier Development, the studio behind RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and Elite: Dangerous. No screenshots to go off yet, but we have a time frame (2016) and platform (PC), as well as the team's intention for the game: "to raise [the benchmark set by RCT3] even further by combining accessible creative features with a sophisticated simulation." With Coaster Park Tycoon, Frontier is hoping to establish "a second major self-published franchise [alongside Elite]," according to chief creative officer Jonny Watts. I'd be less interested in crowdfunding and constant betas/alphas, if that's the route they go, but delightful news otherwise. Coaster Park Tycoon Announced for 2016 [Frontier] |
| Posted: 27 Jan 2015 07:20 AM PST Here's a photo for your nightmare file. It's '80s versions of Wil Wheaton and Jason Bateman kickin' it with possibly the worst version of Mario that Nintendo marketing could ever dream of. According to the "article," Wheaton and Bateman were at an event with other celebs just sitting around, being bros, playing Super Mario Bros. ... just the way bros do. Apparently Wheaton dominated. See where video games get you kids? Nowhere. |
| Touhou games may come to PlayStation this year Posted: 27 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST Ah, Touhou Project. The hyper-popular series of bullet-hell shooters has long been a Holy Grail of sorts for non-PC-owning otaku, and the efforts to get games with the Touhou brand on various consoles have been mighty indeed. Those efforts may bear their fruit this year, though, as the PS Vita and PS4 seem set to see a pair of Touhou titles released this year, in keeping with some plans announced by Japanese company Mediascape last December. Unfortunately, those plans don't seem to include the core series of games, but instead focus on the brand's large cadre of fan-developed "doujin" titles. The first two on the shortlist are Aquastyle's roguelike dungeon-crawler Mystery Gensokyo 3 on the Vita, and the somewhat more intriguing, PS4-bound Gensou Rondo (trailer below), which looks like a blend of fighting game and traditional bullet-hell shmup. An international release has yet to be hinted at, but given the growing amount of quirky, otaku-targeted titles to cross the pond, I wouldn't be surprised to see 'em over here not too long after release. 【東方Project】PSVita『不思議の幻想郷』、PS4『幻想の輪舞』は2015年中にリリースできそうな感じらしい [Hachimakikou, Image: Jenevan] |
| Scythe of relief: Grim Fandango's great, celebrate with a trailer Posted: 27 Jan 2015 06:30 AM PST Día de Muertos typically comes around at the end of October, but it's a semi-annual event in 2015. That's because adventure classic Grim Fandango releases today, ensuring that you'll pay your respects to both the post-alive and gaming royalty all in one fell swoop. If you're not sure how to feel about the remaster, Steven had a go with it and wrote a review. He scored it a 9.5, saying "No bones about it, though, Grim Fandango holds up on its original merits as a stylish, humerus adventure." Check out that sick pun; that's how you know mah boi Steven wrote it. |
| Unreal 4 can help make some ridiculously photo realistic apartments Posted: 27 Jan 2015 06:15 AM PST 3D artist and level designer Benoît Dereau, who has previously worked on Dishonored, has made one of the most impressive Unreal Engine 4 tech demos I've seen, as far as photo realism goes. It makes PT look like a videogame! A cool thing to me about approaching photorealism is readability. In the space between abstraction and this, there are games that tried to look realistic, but technical limitations date them, make them feel muddy and obscure useful visual information. It's why Grim Fandango or Wind Waker--games with style and iconography--look better than most things. But imagine a detective game with this level of detail, where exploring a small crime scene can be done without the need for guiding visual/UI cues because everything is like real life. Could be neat. I'm always trying to figure out ways more developers to make detective games that don't suck, though. |
| What's your favorite Mega Man weapon? Posted: 27 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST The other day a friend and I were discussing custom amiibo, and what we were going to do when Mega Man came out. The possibilities for painting him are endless, considering the fact that he has thousands of different weapon colors at his disposal. If I really had to paint a custom Mega Man amiibo, I think I would want it to represent my favorite weapon. After stewing on it for a while I figured it out -- the Flame Sword. Although it's not a conventional choice, this weapon hails from Sword Man in Mega Man 8. It was popular enough to make an appearance in the new Super Smash Bros., and the melee functionality sets it apart from most of Mega Man's repertoire. So what's your weapon of choice? |
| Vlad the closeted dracula talks Magicka 2 co-op friends in therapy Posted: 27 Jan 2015 05:30 AM PST Magicka 2 continues to outperform most games when it comes to trailers. And believe me, I know something about funny videogame video content. It's also quite fun. I had a chance to play Magicka 2 on PS4 last month and I've got to tell you, the new control scheme made so much more sense to my brain than the first one's fighting game quarter circles. It's good to have a mouse and keyboard alternate, especially because this one is coming to PS4. But also because doing four player local co-op in the first kind of required learning those quarter circle controller moves. The rest of it is usual Magicka fare. Irreverence, vampire accents, and a lot of exploding spells. Plus, four player co-op and accidental friend murder. Sometimes not so accidental, of course. |
| Joystiq is reportedly shutting down Posted: 27 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST I stayed in bed longer than I should have this morning. It was an unlikely occurrence because I woke up rejuvenated and feeling great, ready to take on the world. As I lay in bed and opened Twitter on my phone, I was hit by a wave of news that gutted me, that paralyzed me with depression: Joystiq, my (other) favorite gaming publication, is likely going to be shut down by AOL. The message originally came from Recode, and was reported on by Joystiq itself. Recode's post simply states "AOL is likely to shutter its primary video game site Joystiq, part of an extensive house-cleaning of its under-performing content properties that is taking place over the next weeks." This was all new information to Joystiq, as AOL had not yet mentioned anything to the site's staff. Still, like the champs they are, they wrote about it like they would any other gaming news. And, they managed to make it entertaining, despite the sad, discouraging, grim subject material. |
| New Lumines heads to phones as Rez-creator Mizuguchi helms new US studio Posted: 27 Jan 2015 04:30 AM PST I've just started playing Lumines Electronic Symphony again because Grim Fandango has had me back on my Vita so it's serendipitous that developer Q Entertainment is in the news. And let me just remind you all that Electronic Symphony is fantastic and that you should have it--download, not retail--if you own a Vita. Social developer Mobcast has acquired the rights to Lumines and Meteos for the purpose of making a new Lumines for smart phones to be released worldwide. Meanwhile, Space Channel 5 and Rez producer Tetsuya Mizuguchi, who has taken a break from development since directing 2011's Child of Eden, is getting back into production, heading up the newly formed, California-based Enhance Games. | Reptile confirmed to return in Mortal Kombat X Posted: 27 Jan 2015 04:15 AM PST Yeah, like Reptile wasn't going to make the cut. NetherRealm unveiled the lizard-like ninja in a trailer today, showcasing his scaly new look and classic moves on poor Kung Lao. Gotta admit, always been a big fan of that tongue and acid spit. | Zoë Quinn founds anti-harassment network Crash Override Posted: 27 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST In response to the wave of harassment in the videogame industry, Depression Quest developer Zoë Quinn and freelance game producer Alex Lifschitz have formed Crash Override: a network of anti-harassment crusaders with experience in PR, law enforcement, counseling, and more. The network is designed to combat harassment on a large scale, as opposed to attacks from a single abuser. "We're not a company, just a formalized group of people who have learned how to support others through coordinated online mob harassment," an anonymous Crash Override representative told Destructoid in an email exchange. "We're focused on producing educational materials and helping victims who have reached out to us, but we also plan to engage in more significant outreach to platforms and cultural arbiters in video games and elsewhere to better prevent this kind of stuff from happening in the future." According to the network's site, they are not a "vigilante group," and they "do not take retaliatory actions against abusers." Crash Override's services include both an immediate crisis control center and post-crisis counseling services to help victims cope with the events. The group's response infrastructure is under construction at press time, giving priority to victims of ongoing harassment. There are also plans to use the network's Tumblr blog as a method of delivering online safety lessons, including a post about how to preemptively combat doxing. |
| Xbox One controllers will kinect to the system *twice as fast* Posted: 27 Jan 2015 03:30 AM PST Hoo boy. The Xbox One is a precision machine, baby. That $100 million controller, too. Not content with the two and half years it took to develop it, Microsoft is still tinkering. Members of the Xbox Preview Program can snag a firmware update that blasts the controller's connection times into hyperspace. The controller used to take an agonizing, yawn-inducing 4-5 seconds to connect to the console when you turn it on. Now? All speed, baby. About two (2) seconds! I wish I were twice as fast. |
| Capcom FAQ clarifies everything you get with RE: Revelations 2's Raid Mode Posted: 27 Jan 2015 03:15 AM PST Resident Evil Revelations 2 will bring back Raid Mode, and Capcom has taken to its blog to explain everything. When you buy the initial episode, you'll get both the campaign and 54 Raid Mode missions on three difficulties. More maps will come with additional episodes, and in the end, there will be over 200. You can do split-screen co-op (yes!) initially, but online play won't be available until "shortly after the final episode launches in March." New weapons, parts, and skills are in, as are 15 playable characters, some of which will eventually be available as paid DLC. The disc version that will be released eventually for $39.99 will come with Wesker, and the digital edition for $24.99 comes with Hunk. Capcom has made it clear that you won't be locked out of anything either way, and all content will go on sale. Resident Evil Revelations 2 - Raid Mode rundown [Capcom Unity] |

| The Humble Archie Comics Bundle packs in Sonic and Mega Man Posted: 27 Jan 2015 02:45 AM PST The "Sonic and Mega Man: Worlds Collide" arc from Archie Comics was pretty radical. See, I'm using '90s terminology to describe it, so you know it has to be good. The comic series sees Mega Man and Sonic pitted against and with one another in an epic battle against Wily and Dr. Eggman, and it's just as fun as it sounds. Now you can get it as part of a recent Humble Comics Bundle. Paying the minimum will net you the first four issues of Worlds Collide, beating the average will get you the second volume, and paying $15 or more will get you all of it, on top of everything else. If you're a fan of either franchise and read comics, it's easily worth it just for Worlds. Humble Archie Comics Bundle [Humble Bundle] |
| Life is Strange episodes will release every six weeks Posted: 27 Jan 2015 02:30 AM PST Life is Strange comes out this week (January 30) on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC ($5 per episode, $20 for a season pass). Recent episodic adventure games have seen unclear stretches of empty time between releases. You can side-eye, say, The Wolf Among Us here, but the first episode of Kentucky Route Zero came out two years ago and we're still waiting on episode four. It's worth it, though. With Life is Strange, Dontnod is promising a clean six weeks between each episode release on all consoles. The team worked hard on their production pipeline to be sure it would be able to deliver on time. Let's see how that goes. |
| Hyrule Warriors ships one million units worldwide, which is damn good for the Wii U Posted: 27 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST Hyrule Warriors is a really good game, which is why I'm glad it shipped one million units globally. Koei Tecmo has recently announced the numbers, and although yes, that number is shipped, not sold, that's still great for a Wii U exclusive game. The adventure isn't over yet though as more DLC will be out on February 5-- and the studio would be crazy to not continue making some. Guys, check it out. What if Nintendo announces an enhanced port on the New 3DS later this year? Whoa. Hyrule Warriors [Gamer.ne.jp] |
| Last of Us film 'pretty faithful' despite 'some big changes' Posted: 27 Jan 2015 01:00 AM PST The Last of Us writer Neil Druckmann is working on the screenplay for the upcoming film and he's just finished a second draft, along with a table read with "a bunch of actors," according to a Game Informer interview. Sam Raimi is still producing, but no actors or directors have been named, though Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams is linked to the role of Ellie. According to Druckmann, the film will be, "[p]retty faithful to the game. There are some big changes, but the tone and what the story's trying to say is pretty faithful to the game." Druckmann is also co-directing Uncharted 4. Busy guy. "When I'm in the office, it's all Uncharted 4 all the time. When I should be sleeping, it's the Uncharted movie," he misspoke. "Yeah, sorry, The Last of Us movie." The Last of Us Movie Has "Pretty Big Changes," But Still Faithful To The Game [GameSpot] |
| Borderlands' Sir Hammerlock thinks his sister is an 'exceedingly bad person' Posted: 27 Jan 2015 12:30 AM PST The Lady Hammerlock Pack of downloadable content is out for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel today so 2K and Gearbox have released an introduction video for the Baroness. While she is not really a villain, she is not exactly a hero either. She demonstrates that by murdering an entire club full of people with only a little provocation. Are we sure that isn't evil? The trailer shows off a stylized version of her Action Skill Cold as Ice, which sends out a "frost diadem shard" that homes in on enemies and creates a freezing aura around them. If a targeted enemy dies while there is still time left on the shard, it will seek out additional enemies to cool off. |

| Dragon's Dogma Online officially announced, with microtransactions Posted: 26 Jan 2015 11:00 PM PST Capcom has been suspiciously filing trademarks for Dragon's Dogma Online left and right. They were pretty sneaky. But now we know the truth -- Dragon's Dogma Online exists, and it's been officially unveiled by way of Famitsu. The game will be released in 2015 on the PS4, PS3, and PC. It will be free-to-play, supported by microtransactions. You'll play around in a new world, with four-player multiplayer support, and 100-person towns. Combat will be very close to the original, and the announced classes so far are Priest, Shield Sage, Hunter, and Fighter. Crafting is in, as are Pawns (AI partners), and an open-world scheme. I definitely want to give this a try but I'm nervous about the microtransactions element. Dragon's Dogma Online [Famitsu via Gematsu] |
| Nostalgia blast! Viz Media reprinting Zelda: A Link to the Past Nintendo Power comic Posted: 26 Jan 2015 10:00 PM PST Shotaro Ishinomori's The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past comic for Nintendo Power (RIP) was a few years before my time. But, a quick Google image search later, I can confirm that it's as cool-looking and expressive as everyone says. Expensive, too -- but not for much longer. Viz Media plans to release a reprint of the comic on May 5, 2015. Pre-orders will open on Monday. Lot of fond memories, from the sound of it. I'm excited to make new ones. Artwork like this helped bring games to life in a way that the sprite art of the time, nice as much of it was, simply couldn't. VIZMedia [Twitter via Comics Alliance] |
| Resident Evil: Revelations 2 brings Barry Burton and Raid mode center stage Posted: 26 Jan 2015 06:01 PM PST Capcom has been on quite a roll lately. With the announcement of Street Fighter V, new releases in the Devil May Cry series coming, and the recent success of its HD Remaster for Resident Evil, it seems like the once troubled publisher has found its way back to the hearts of fans. And with the reveal of Resident Evil: Revelations 2 late last year, it has plenty more in store for fans of the survival horror series. I got the opportunity to play a decent chunk of Revelations 2 last year, and I was pretty impressed with how the mystery was being brought back to the series. Dabbling into episodic gaming, this installment is set to be released through four episodes; one will release every week from February 24th to March 18th. It's a pretty experimental, and unique take on Resident Evil, and that might be just what the franchise needs. But just before its debut next month, the folks at Capcom invited me out to get another crack at their experiment. And during my session, I got reacquainted with an old buddy from the series' past, and even got to take the new and improved Raid Mode for a test run. |
| Posted: 26 Jan 2015 03:40 PM PST Grim Fandango didn't need a remaster as much as it needed a re-release. Many, myself included, have found it difficult to track down a copy to play. We've had an entire digital catalog--GOG.com--devoted to getting good, old games up for sale on a digital storefront, but no Grim Fandango? The touch-ups are appreciated. You can switch between the original and remastered look at the touch of a button. The latter has some nice dynamic lighting and new character models, but I stuck mostly with the former for its more vibrant colors. The in-game commentary is a nice touch. The non-tank controls are welcomed (as is the cheeky trophy for playing with tank controls). No bones about it, though, Grim Fandango holds up on its original merits as a stylish, humerus adventure. |
| Xbox One sale: $10 Titanfall and Garden Warfare, $36 Dragon Age: Inquisition Posted: 26 Jan 2015 03:30 PM PST It's much easier to stomach Electronic Arts when you're only paying a fraction of the original price, as is the case with these Xbox One deals via Live. Come on, latecomers. This one's for you:
I think I paid $10 for Titanfall or thereabouts, which was low enough that I couldn't be too upset about its dwindling player base. Fun game when you can play a full, well-balanced match. Same goes for Garden Warfare, my eighth favorite release of last year. And Dragon Age. Oh, Dragon Age. Dare I sacrifice my coveted Xbox One hard drive space for you? Nah. PC version it is.
