You might be tempted to call Ronin 'Kill Bill: the Videogame'

Posted: 24 Jan 2015 01:00 PM PST

Devolver Digital has a penchant for picking up clever game jam submissions and giving them a chance to grow into fully-realized titles. Titan Souls is a fine example, and it would have never had any exposure outside of the tiniest of niche audiences; now, it's gotten enough funding and press that many eagerly await it.

One of the publisher's most recent pick-ups certainly has the moxie to follow the same path. Ronin is a smart, cerebral game -- one that requires care more than stick skills. A cursory glance invites comparisons to Gunpoint, but that'd be selling it short. Ronin melds real-time and turn-based play, a combination that results in an action puzzler of sorts, but with more emphasis on the latter than the former.

The Bard's Tale IV cometh

Posted: 24 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST

I'm an older gamer. You know how I know this? Because when I see things like The Bard's Tale IV is coming out, my nostalgia glands kick into high gear and I resemble a wired Johnny Depp from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Samus and Sagat unbox Guilty Gear X3d -SIGN- Limited Edition

Posted: 24 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST

Some people say GG is the best thing in gaming today. Others say it's all flash and no substance, existing to drawing attention to itself and nothing more. No, I'm not talking about that GG. I'm talking about Guilty Gear, the fighting game series from Arc Systems Works. The latest game in the series, Guilty Gear X3rd -SIGN-, certainly earns itself a few points on the "weird name designed just to draw attention to itself" column, but that doesn't detract from the fact that it's an amazingly well made game. The limited edition version is also pretty cool, as you can see for yourself here.

After shooting the first two episodes of Samus and Sagat, Maddy and I took a few minutes to film this unboxing video. We did it in one take because, like dummies, we didn't realize that we could always go back and record the audio commentary for the video later. At that point we had also used up all of our video producer's time, who promptly kicked us out of his house after the shoot. Still, I don't think we did too bad of a job. We definitely took the things out of the box, that's for sure.

If you like this one, Samus and Sagat may do an unboxing of some miscellaneous H1Z1 crap that I just got in the mail. Let us know in the comments if that's something you'd like to see, and don't forget to tune into Samus and Sagat episode 2, coming next week. We really delve deep into the psyche's of our characters in that one. Also, black bikini.

ArenaNet unveils Guild Wars 2's first expansion, Heart of Thorns

Posted: 24 Jan 2015 09:08 AM PST

Guild Wars 2 is a pretty great MMO. It's buy-to-play, which means you have to purchase the initial package first, then there's no subscription fees or nasty progression-hindering microtransactions. You buy the game, and it feels like a full game.

Over the past few years though I feel like I've done everything that interests me personally, so I'm glad that developer ArenaNet just announced the expansion Heart of Thorns, that will be playable at PAX East this year. It will take place in a jungle-heavy realm, and will allow players to go beyond level 80, as well as access new "Specializations" that entail cool new abilities like hang gliding.

The main draw is the brand new storyline, which will have players go up against the elder dragon Mordremoth. New maps, another competitive mode, Guild Halls, and extra world events will also await.

Oh, and the base game is $10 temporarily.

Jessica Nigri is the new voice of Super Sonico

Posted: 24 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST

Jessica Nigri first showed up on my radar after she cosplayed Curly Brace from Cave Story. Applying that level of detail and craftsmanship to a relatively obscure character is the sign of a cosplayer who isn't in it just for the potential fame and fortune. Yet hear we are, years later, and Nigri has become a headliner in her own right. I got to talk to her back when she was touring as Juliet Starling from Lollipop Chainsaw, just as her star was starting to rise. It was downright heartwarming to see how earnestly and humbly she accepted her growing popularity. I'm still kinda ticked at PAX for kicking her out of the show

Now Nigri's taking on the role Super Sonico, a fictional idol created by game publisher Nitroplus back in 2006. Sonico was initially just a mascot for a Nitroplus music festival, but since then her star has been on the rise as well, going on to star in multiple games, manga, and anime. Jessica has been cosplaying Sonico for a little while now, but this is the first time that she's officially voiced the character.

Nigri as Sonico is a perfect fit, as they are both icons for playful exhibitionism, passion for videogames, and self-aware silliness. I wonder if Nigri will be appearing as Sonico at PAX East this year? If so, could a Samus, Sagat, and Sonico crossover be in our future?

Children of Morta announces stretch goals

Posted: 24 Jan 2015 08:30 AM PST

After giving you a formal introduction of Children of Morta earlier this week, Austin developer Dead Mage has revealed to hack 'n' slash hopefuls the stretch goals of its project on Kickstarter.

While an initial funding goal of $65,000 has been set, if players want to see this procedurally-generated roguelike beauty on Sony platforms, then Kickstarter backers will need to cough up $80,000 for a PS4 version, and $90,000 for the Vita -- which seems like the perfect place for a title like this.

Having played my fair share of Binding of Isaac and Rogue Legacy on the Vita, I can't think of a better device for these type of games (3DS as well, I suppose). My battery life is ready.

And if you want to add some local co-op to this game, Dead Mage is going to need a healthy $105,000. After that? Who knows. Maybe we can see an N-Gage version. Y'all still rocking the N-Gage, right?

Experience Points .01: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Posted: 24 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST

Experience Points is a series in which I highlight some of the most memorable things about a particular game. These can include anything from a specific scene or moment, a character, a weapon or item, a level or location, a part of the soundtrack, a gameplay mechanic, a line of dialogue, or anything else about the game that is particularly noteworthy and/or awesome.

This series will no doubt contain spoilers for the games being discussed, so keep that in mind if you plan on playing the game for the first time.

With Majora's Mask 3D coming out in a few weeks, I figured it would be fitting to make the first entry all about The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, which happens to be my favorite Zelda game. Feel free to share some of your own favorite things about the game in the comments!

Cave Story 2 folder spotted on Nicalis desktop at PAX South

Posted: 24 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST

PAX South is going on right now, and two of our most honey-loving sugarbears are in the fray as we speak, lapping up all that sweet golden joy. One of the games they're set to check out is Nicalis's Castle in the Darkness, a 2D action game that features a baby being eaten by a giant plant. Oh the humanity!

Nicalis was spilling the beans about that title and many of their other projects at their PAX South panel when all of a sudden, one of the attendees noticed a folder marked "Cave Story 2" on the Nicalis laptop. When asked about if Nicalis is working on a follow up to one of the most beloved independently produced videogames of our modern era, they reportedly responded "maybe, maybe not".

I'm a huge fan of Kero Blaster, the latest game by Cave Story's creator. but there is no denying that Cave Story is still Daisuke Amaya's greatest game. In the times that I've asked Nicalis and Amaya-san if they would consider a developing sequel, they responded with a mix of hope and anxiety regarding the prospect, much like your average Cave Story fan might. As it stands, Cave Story is nearly perfect, and following perfection is no small feat.

If anyone can do it though, it's Amaya-san. I think I can speak for his fan base when I say that any new Cave Story would be better than no new Cave Story

Comments of the Week - Prototype

Posted: 24 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST

[Almost three years to the day since the last Comments of the Week graced the front page (RIP Captain Bus), Dtoid community blogger Dreamweaver has resurrected the fan-favorite feature. Enjoy! --Mr Andy Dixon]

Wait, are your eyes deceiving you?

Nope, it's really here: Comments of the Week has returned! Well, maybe.

Do you guys remember All That? It was one of my favorite TV shows when I was a kid. There was just something about the wacky albeit juvenile humor, slapstick comedy, and overall goofy antics that really made it one of best programs on Nickelodeon. As long ago as it might feel, I think some of you might remember that they changed cast members after a couple of years, and as a result, the show ended up not as good as it used to be... but was still kinda fun to watch.

This is the All That of the blogs.

Gravity Ghost is pretty so I took a bunch of screenshots

Posted: 23 Jan 2015 06:00 PM PST

I just finished playing through Gravity Ghost (expect a review later today), and as I tend to do with less action-focused titles or sequences, I took a lot of screenshots along the way. Not only does Gravity Ghost's planet-orbiting gameplay allow for liberal screen grabs, but it also combines a couple of my favorite things for still images: outer space and a generous use of color.

Gravity Ghost's art style appears hand-drawn in crayon, which may rub some the wrong way. It definitely looks a little weird up close, but at the very least it is unique. Take a gander at the screens to see what I mean. As usual, I tried to cull images from the collection that would act as major spoilers.

New Mario amiibo temporarily exclusive to Mario Party 10 bundle

Posted: 23 Jan 2015 05:00 PM PST

Mario Party 10 is getting its own line of amiibo, lest Nintendo not have multiple $13 red plumber toys to peddle. Amazon put up listings for PeachYoshiBowserLuigi, and Toad. Every one except Mario.

As chief amiibo collector Chris Carter surmised, that Mario Party 10 bundle will be, "[f]or a limited time, the only way to play with the Mario Party Mario amiibo included."

Because this is Nintendo and amiibo we're talking about, who knows for how limited a time this will be the only way to snag a Mario #2. Collector types, does that put a damper on things? Is this spurring any Mario Party 10 buys that wouldn't have otherwise happened?

The return of news on Dtoid's YouTube channel? Lets start with Pokkén Tournament

Posted: 23 Jan 2015 04:00 PM PST

Today was a pretty huge day for Destructoid. One of the founding fathers of the website returned to the fold and swiftly kicked NBA2K15 in the nuts. We reviewed the New 3DS with lukewarm appreciation, tempered with the customary cautioning for early adopters that's pretty much status quo for new console releases these days. We launched a new YouTube series called Beard View that takes focus on games that you may not have had a chance to play for yourself. We stuck our necks out and hoped for the best.

It's all very exciting stuff for an Editor-in-Chief. In fact, it's 4 hours past my bed time right now, and yet I'm still up, still thinking about Destructoid. More specifically, I'm thinking about how excited I am about Pokkén Tournament, and how I want to talk to everyone in the world about it.

That feeling of inspiration led me to stay up late, writing emails to Dtoid's video honcho Bill Zoeker about how it may be time to bring news back to Destructoid's video cache. That conversation led me to cut together this pilot episode for what future news-focused videos on our YouTube channel might look like. It's a huge departure from the TV-style show we did with Revision3, but maybe this type of video programming is more fitting for Destructoid. It's low tech, prone to tangents, and made with the same tools that most of our readers have access to. Those are some of the principles that Destructoid was built on. It feels right to return to them when we can.

So what do you think, would you want to see a little news video like this on Destructoid once a week? Once a day? What we do next all depends on you, so don't be shy about telling us what you want.

You have the right to remain sexy with Criminal Girls: Invite Only's latest screens

Posted: 23 Jan 2015 03:30 PM PST

Criminal Girls: Invite Only is a game I've been following for some time now, and right now I'm in the middle of reviewing it for Destructoid. Since there's still a bit of time left before it actually comes out, however, I've come with a set of new screenshots to whet your appetites for all things nubile deliquents.

These shots show off the battle system, exploration, and more of the vivid aesthetic the game seems to have adopted. It'll most certainly be quite divisive when it's available for the public to download, but I'll reveal more when the embargo lifts and my review goes up. In the meantime, enjoy the grabs and look forward to my opinion on yet another obscure Japanese romp.

Beard View impressions of Puzzle & Dragons Z on 3DS

Posted: 23 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST

When Nintendo announced the New Super Mario Bros. version of Puzzle & Dragons for the 3DS, reports came in that their stock values skyrocketed. Puzzle & Dragons is a huge hit on mobile devices in Japan, much like Candy Crush and Angry Birds are in the United States. While the series needs no introduction in its home country, the rest of the world might need a little more information on Puzzle & Dragons before we get too excited about it. Good thing we have Jed from Beard View to help us understand what this Pokemon meets Bejeweled-style union of mass compulsion is all about.

Beard View is a new series from Dtoid and DimmuJed that offers impressions of games that many of us know of but have never been able to play. We're starting off with Japanese 3DS games, but we could go anywhere from there. If you have games that you've only heard about but have never gotten to see for yourself, let us know and we'll try to get them on Beard View

While you're at it, let me know what you think of the Beard View theme song. Like with opening number for Amber's Unboxing Series, it's all my fault.
