Best Buy cancels Majora's Mask New 3DS XL pre-orders Posted: 23 Jan 2015 11:40 AM PST According to multiple tipsters and just about everybody on Twitter, Best Buy has started canceling pre-orders for the elusive Majora's Mask-themed New 3DS XL, offering $50 in BestBuy.com credit as a make-good. There have even been reports of customers not getting the $50 coupon, according to former Destructoid CEO Hamza Aziz. In an email sent out to customers, the electronics retailer claimed the number of pre-orders "exceeded the quantities made available to Best Buy." Should you have paid for the system in full with a debit or credit card, you will be refunded for the full amount. The email also claims that Best Buy will be "unable to fulfill all of the pre-orders received," implying that some pre-orders will be upheld. A cursory search on Twitter for 'best buy majora's mask' brings back a series of complaints, which is unsurprising. The vast majority of tweets are customers lamenting the cancellation, mixed in with news stories and the odd success story, like this tweet from @echrisdunn posted close to press time. We've reached out to both Nintendo and Best Buy for comment, but considering it's late on a PAX Friday, we may not hear anything until Monday at the earliest. [Thanks to AyooRyan and Michael for the tip!]
| You can explore Dark Souls' Lordran in Minecraft Posted: 23 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST Minecraft user Davweed is currently recreating the world of Lordran from Dark Souls, block by block. If you've played Dark Souls, you probably know how crazy this is. Lordran is full of grandiose locations that interconnect and weave into each other, so it'll take a lot of precision and dedication to pull this off. The map hasn't been completely built yet, but it looks very impressive so far! Firelink Shrine, New Londo Ruins, and most of Undead Asylum are ready to be explored. Davweed says he'll be working on finishing Blighttown, Valley of the Drakes, and the Catacombs next. Better watch out for skeletons in the Catacombs... I might want to explore this myself once it's finished, if only to see what he does with Ash Lake. You can download the project and check for updates over here. | Posted: 23 Jan 2015 10:30 AM PST If you're a non-sports game fan, then your only association with NBA2K is probably the image above of my boy Jeffrey. Poor Jeffrey, he's literally become the face of an entire franchise. It doesn't have to be this way. And it shouldn't. NBA2K is consistently one of the top-selling games each year (right up there with your Maddens, FIFAs and CODs). You would think with all the straight cash that 2K collects from this franchise it would mean that each year we get a premium product built on the backs of previous generations of success. For the most part, this is true. Bugs aside, NBA2K is still a solid basketball game and really the only team in the league worth talking about. EA gave it a good effort this past year, but NBA Live is still nowhere near as all-around good as NBA2K. I love this game. I spend more time with it each year than any other game and consider it my favorite series of all time. So what's wrong? Why is this series failing in the eyes of so many of us who pour hours upon hours into this game? The answer: Fucking VC (Virtual Currency). |
Posted: 23 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST Dtoid Community Monster and all-around nice guy Conor Elsea is at MAGFest this weekend. ARE YOU?! If so, you should totally find him, because he's recording an extra special episode of Radio Destructoid with Radio D alumn Aaron "Mxy" Yost, and they want you to help! So if you spot Conor (he's beautiful; you can't miss him), just tell him you're from Dtoid and you want to be on the show! Having trouble locating our furry little friend? Follow @ConorElsea and @RadioDtoid on Twitter and let the stalking commence. Have fun!

| My brain can't handle this 'absurdly high-speed arcade shmup-like' Posted: 23 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST Not ten seconds into watching this video for Aerobat, a shoot-'em-up about "reckless self-endangerment," I fired off a staff email to call dibs on posting it. Holy shit! Gimme. Your pilot's ship doesn't have enough power to juice its weapons and engines simultaneously, so you have to zig-zag past enemies and return fire while free-falling. "Hyper-responsive controls have been at the core of the design since day one," says designer Matthew Yeager. "Movement is entirely mouse-driven with near zero input latency, allowing your fighter to dance through swarms of enemies at incredible speeds." The game is for sure coming to PC (date to be announced), with Mac and Linux support likely to happen. "Other platforms are possible but will require considerable effort to support." | Posted: 23 Jan 2015 08:30 AM PST You may be asking yourself: Who the fuck is Robert Summa? And why is he saying he's back? And why is he calling me a bitch? For those of you too young to remember a baby Dtoid, I'm the former editor-in-chief of this unholy place. Back when the Robot was merely a glimmer in Niero's eye, I hopped aboard his back of circuits and steered Destructoid into a somewhat respectable game blog. |
Posted: 23 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST Nintendo has an interesting history in terms of portables. Outside of the rare add-on like the expansion pack for the Nintendo 64 or the Game Boy Player for the GameCube, they play it rather conservatively when it comes to consoles. But for their portable line, yowza do they go all out. Colors, new styles, paint jobs -- heck, it'll take you half a day to sift through this massive list of 3DS iterations. So here we are with the "New" 3DS, a moniker Nintendo has used far too often. In this case, it's somewhat justified.
Cautious optimism: Rain of Reflections has some good RPG ideas Posted: 23 Jan 2015 07:30 AM PST A new development studio was formed in Sweden called Lionbite Games, and it has revealed its first project: a noir cyberpunk role-playing game called Rain of Reflections. The trailer above shows off the dystopian world and its three main characters, but it only tells part of the story of why this could potentially be good. When describing the project, Lionbite mentions a focus on choice-driven narrative, the ability to think and talk a way around combat, and a promise that there will be no filler or grinding. I'd take a role-playing game that gets to the point without spending way too many hours in random battles. But the proof is in the pudding. Rain of Reflections talks big, but it won't be clear if it lives up to those words until we see more of it in action. That could be a while; it is scheduled to release some time in 2016.
Friday Night Fights: MAGFest & PAX South Posted: 23 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST Happy Friday! It's a fairly light week for games this week, due mostly to the fact that both MAGFest and PAX South are happening as you read this. To all the Dtoiders attending these wonderful events, have an absolutely awesome time. For those of us not attending, well, we'll have our own damn fun, won't we?!
Toukiden: Kiwami has better abs on PlayStation 4 Posted: 23 Jan 2015 06:30 AM PST Between Toukiden: The Age of Demons and Freedom Wars, I'm slipping way behind on hunting/action games. Probably for the best, in the former case: Omega Force is coming out with an expanded version, Toukiden: Kiwami, that includes the original game's story. Patience pays. You can get a feel for how Kiwami's visuals differ on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita in these comparison screenshots. Textures aside, the game ends up faring rather well on PS Vita. Koei Tecmo has also detailed pre-order bonuses ahead of the March 31, 2015 launch.
Mahjong Pretty Girls Battle is authentic mahjong, but with sexy anime girls Posted: 23 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST Most of the mahjong games on Steam are weird. There's a weird tower one, an Antiques Roadshow one. They either all have their own rules, odd set dressing, or both. In the case of Mahjong Pretty Girls Battle, these are, "authentic Japanese Mahjong rules...including settings for some famous local rule variants," but "presented as an exciting Pretty Girls Battle game." There are 23 voiced, cartoon girls to use, "from a brave samurai girl, to sexy devils and nuns, a sword fighting princess, and rabbits and foxes in human form." I'm a bit surprised by how few videogame versions of analog games are on Steam. I guess it's more cost effective for someone making a simple card game or checkers game to host it on their own crappy, ad-covered website where it'll come up in search engine. Or folks just use the games that come with their computer. Do computers still come with games? Anyways, mahjong looks hard, so I'm holding out for Domino Pretty Girls Battle or at least Hanafuda Pretty Girls Battle.
| Save 10 percent on PlayStation Network purchases this weekend Posted: 23 Jan 2015 05:30 AM PST [Update: The 10-percent-off promo codes are live and vary depending on your region. In the US, it's KF56EM5KB3. The UK's code is T6R3KB529K. A bunch more are listed here.] This weekend on PlayStation Network, you'll be able to save 10 percent on store content including games, DLC, movies, and TV shows with a one-time-use promo code. The discount can be applied to "eligible items in a total cart purchase," according to Sony, so load it up! Subscriptions for PlayStation Plus, Music Unlimited, and PlayStation Now are excluded, as are video rentals. Be on the lookout for the code on the storefront or Twitter -- it'll be active from 9:00am Pacific on Friday, January 23 until 9:00am Pacific on Monday, January 26. Maybe get Tokyo Jungle and make a troop of baby Pomeranians or dinosaurs (really!). Another good option is God Hand, if you want to please Steven. Suikoden II if you're a Kyle man. Whatever you're thinking of buying, know that you'll have to redeem your promo code at checkout and complete the transaction before 9:00am on January 26 for it to work. Choose wisely. | Bud Light turns man into Pac-Man in Super Bowl ad Posted: 23 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST Bud Light has released one of the ads which will air during the upcoming Super Bowl XLIX, in which an unsuspecting beer consumer becomes the player of a fully-realized, physical Pac-Man game while a live DJ spins music in a rave environment. Who wouldn't want to do this? I implore Namco Bandai and Bud Light to not stop here. Make this a nationwide tour that stops in 12 major cities. I know I'd show up. |
At $10, yeah, Guild Wars 2 is worth playing Posted: 23 Jan 2015 04:30 AM PST As a casual MMO player, I've always liked the Guild Wars series -- no monthly subscription fits my lifestyle, you know? I don't have to feel guilty about wasting money by not playing "enough," whatever that is. If you're of a similar mindset, this weekend's Guild Wars 2 sale is for you. The game will be 75 percent off, which amounts to $9.99 for the Digital Heroic Edition. Worth it. Look for the deal to activate at 8:00am Pacific on January 24. You'll then have until 11:59pm Pacific on January 25 to make your purchase. And if you can finish downloading Guild Wars 2 in time, ArenaNet is also offering double experience points for all players this weekend. Also, with this being PAX South weekend, expect news on the possible expansion Heart of Thorns. This Weekend: Guild Wars 2 at PAX South, an Unprecedented Sale, and Double XP for All [Guild Wars 2]
Get hype-o-thetical with old-school arena shooter TOXIKK Posted: 23 Jan 2015 03:30 AM PST Hanover Germany-based indie developer Reakktor Studios, creator of the newly released Early Access title TOXIKK, asks us to consider some interesting hypothetical scenarios: In this thought experiment, ask yourself: What if today's military shooters never came to be as we know them? What if competitive first-person shooters somehow stubbornly stayed hyper-focused on what was working in the arena shooters of the late '90s to early 2000s and continued to evolve on a technological level? How might they look and play? The studio attempts to answer these questions in the design of its own title by stripping away aspects that are now mostly ubiquitous in today's contemporary multiplayer shooter. What if there were no leveling, no skill trees and no perks to be unlocked? What if cover systems were nonexistent and there were no classes to specialize in? What if weapons weren't configurable and iron sight aiming were never implemented?
Report: Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. to get demo cards at GameStop Posted: 23 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST A NeoGAF user is reporting that select GameStop stores have obtained demo codes for Code Name S.T.E.A.M. The demo will be giving out in card form, with a download code on the reverse side. Stores reportedly have them in stock, but aren't distributing them yet, and the codes themselves aren't even active. We've reached out to GameStop and Nintendo for more information. There was a time when I had no interest in this game, but the Fire Emblem amiibo feature has single-handedly convinced me to go all-in. Code Name S.T.E.A.M. [NeoGAF]
Play The Sims 4 free for 48 hours on Origin Posted: 23 Jan 2015 02:30 AM PST Electronic Arts has added The Sims 4 to its Origin Game Time program, which offers a trial period on some major releases in the Origin library. Players can install The Sims 4 now through Origin and play free for 48 hours, starting from the first time the game is launched. Progress made during the trial period is saved and players can pick up right where they left off if they decide to buy the game. I like Game Time, conceptually. I rarely participate in "free weekend" events for games, the game offered generally being something I'm not interested in or wouldn't have time for that particular weekend. The freedom to pick when I want to sit down and make a purchasing assessment is a feature I appreciate. The offerings are still a bit anemic since launching the program last year. The Sims 4 is one of only four titles available for Game Time play, along with Titanfall, Battlefield 4, and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. All are large, complex games that benefit from being experienced in full (as opposed to a content-limited demo), and that's great. But where is the EA Sports line? How is it that Kingdoms of Amalur makes it into this program and FIFA 15 doesn't? I don't understand. Try The Sims 4 for Free With Origin Game Time [EA]
Gravity Ghost story trailer hints at protagonist Iona's origin Posted: 23 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST In Gravity Ghost, the player controls Iona, who is a colorful ghost. The story is told through flashbacks, with scenes showing that Iona was not always a ghost. My scientist deductive reasoning tells me this: at some point she must have transitioned from existing as a regular person to existing as a less traditionally alive person. The story trailer above may provide some hints to her ghostly origin. Gravity Ghost is set to release next Monday, January 26, and every purchase comes with two copies. Designer Erin Robinson's idea behind that decision is that Gravity Ghost is accessible (though it requires manual dexterity, there is no fail state) and can be shared with others who might not typically play games. Expect Destructoid's review for Gravity Ghost some time this weekend.
Pikachu, Suicune, and Gardevoir announced for Pokkén Tournament Posted: 23 Jan 2015 12:30 AM PST [Update: Embedded the full stream below. Also, GoNintendo rounded up more info on how the game plays, including details on how the 3-Axis movement works, how you can guard attacks from any height with the same button, and more. This definitely isn't just Tekken with the Pokémon brand slapped on it.] A load of new Pokkén Tournament info just aired on Japanese TV and the Internet is currently scrambling to keep up. Series mascot Pikachu, legendary beast Suicune and Destructoid favorite Gardevoir have joined Lucario and Machamp as announced playable characters. Gen-5 starter Snivy, Gen-6 started Fennekin, "flying Pikachu" Emolga and "boat with a face" Lapras are in the game as non-playable support characters. We've also learned more about how the game will control. You won't need a fight stick for this one, folks. In fact, you could probably play Pokkén Tournament with an SNES pad and not suffer any loss of precision. The game has a unique controller that only utilizes a d-pad (movement), L (support) and R (guard) shoulder buttons, and A (Pokémon attack), B (jump), X (weak attack) and Y (strong attack) face buttons for inputs. Sounds like a perfect fit for just about any Wii U compatible controller, don't you think? The game will go on location test in select Japanese arcades starting January 30, so if you live out that way, give the game a spin and write about it in our community blogs. We may just put your story on the front page. Friday: Pokkén Tournament Information + Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire - Battle Competition [Serebii.net]
