Point-and-click shmup Starr Mazer now on Kickstarter

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST

A couple days ago Steven told us that Mega Man composer Manami Matsumae would be contributing to Starr Mazer, and that she would not be alone in that endeavor. Indeed, the huge list of composers on the Starr Mazer Kickstarter includes names like C-jeff, Danimal Cannon, the ubiquitous Jake "virt" Kaufman, and a ton of others.

The soundtrack is not all Starr Mazer has going for it. It seeks to combine two disparate genres, blending point-and-click adventure gameplay with horizontal sidescrolling shooting. According to the campaign page, it will not be broken up into distinct sections, but rather the two pieces will flow into one another. The Kickstarter page also has a healthy dose of rad animated GIFs.

Starr Mazer is seeking $160,000 in funding and has collected pledges totaling almost 10% of that in the first day. Assuming funding goes through, it should release on Linux, Mac, and Windows, with stretch goals set for console versions.

Don Thacker, designer/writer/director for Starr Mazer, will be talking to Jonathan Holmes on Sup Holmes this Sunday.

Potatoman Seeks the Troof plants its chunks on iOS

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 02:00 PM PST

When doing research for this news story, I took to Google.com to discover more about how potatoes reproduce. I stumbled upon a definitive answer to my query at the aptly named website Answers.com, where I was told "To plant potatoes, you cut the mature raw potato into chunks, with at least one eye on each chunk. Plant the chunks."

Could this be the Troof that Potatoman has been seeking this whole time? "Plant the chunks"?

You can find out for yourself if you've got iOS 6.1 or higher on your iPhone/iPad. If you're more into traditional controls, you can get the game over on Steam. I haven't played through the game on iOS yet, in part because I'm afraid that I'm in the game now. Certain animated gifs have suggested this to be the case. I supposed that would be fair turnabout given Potatoman's cameo in our recent Little Mac amiibo hamburger video, but still, being in videogames scares me. What if I screw up? Virtual me will live on as a screw up forever, and there is nothing I can do about it.

What's that? I'm already a virtual screw up forever because I cooked a $40 amiibo into a hamburger and took a bite of it?  Thanks guys. I feel better now.

Ashly Burch plays a giant rapping mouse in Gravity Ghost

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 01:00 PM PST

Gravity Ghost is finally seeing release on Jan 26th, and as a reminder, it's still not too late to take advantage of the game's 33% off pre-order sale. You get an extra copy for pre-ordering too, so it's worth going in on with a friend if you're feeling sheepish.

The game is primarily about providing "Eureka!" moments to the player through a delightful physics system and tough-but-fair puzzle-platforming. Hopefully people wont miss that beneath the brilliant mechanics and level design is a sad, funny, and serenely strange story, filled with memorable characters and surprising moments. Before creating Gravity Ghost, designer Erin Robinson wrote both Adventure Games and a newspaper comic strip. She's got storytelling in her blood, and that seeps into her new game in many interesting ways.

Ashly Burch (Borderlands 2, Attack on Titan, Persona Q, HAWP) plays many characters in the game, including the titular Gravity Ghost and the giant blue mouse seen above. She reportedly pulled of her performance here in one take. There is a reason why no matter how many videos I make for Dtoid, I'll always feel like I'm in the shadow of Ash and Anthony. They are just so good at this stuff.

Rob Riggle plays a decent Frank West, but Dead Rising: Watchtower looks bad

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST

We were promised a direct-to-internet Dead Rising movie, and that's exactly what we're getting.

Even with my expectations set accordingly, I'm coming off this trailer for Dead Rising: Watchtower feeling disappointed. Rob Riggle (The Daily Show, 21 Jump Street) as photojournalist Frank West sounded fine to me, but he won't get much screen time if this clip is any indication.

An axe-wielding clown psycho, "combo weapons," and a Servbot t-shirt are nice nods to the source material, granted, but it's going to take more than for me to sit through a full-length movie. It'll debut exclusively on Crackle on March 27, 2015 if morbid curiosity gets the better of you.

Climb a giant beanstalk in Grow Home, a new game from Ubisoft

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 11:30 AM PST

Ubisoft announced a new game today called Grow Home, and it looks freaking adorable! The game takes inspiration from wonderful works such as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Wall-E, and falls in line with Ubisoft's recent tendency to pursue smaller passion projects such as Child of Light and Valiant Hearts. That sounds like exactly the kind of game I'd enjoy, and something I'd like to see more of from Ubi.

The project started as a new tool for exploring procedural animation, a "toy" for a small group of eight developers at Ubisoft Reflections, and grew into an idea for a game as the team started to experiment with it. The game stars a cute robot named BUD, a Botanical Utility Droid, tasked with searching for a new species of flora to bring more oxygen to his home world. He discovers the beanstalk-like Star Plant, and helps it grow while collecting its seeds.

Grow Home will have a heavy emphasis on exploration, as you climb the Star Plant's many expanding branches to discover floating islands, hidden caves, and crystals scattered throughout, which can expand BUD's abilities. I'm a huge sucker for exploration-based games, so I can't wait to see more of this!

Grow Home will be available on PC via Steam on February 4th, priced at $9.99.

Clear your schedule for this John Romero x Double Fine Let's Play of Doom

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST

I've fallen behind on Double Fine's developer-led Let's Play series Devs Play, but I can't resist jumping back in now, order be damned, for the episode about Doom featuring John Romero.

The id Software co-founder is joined by Double Fine's own JP LeBreton (BioShock, Spacebase DF-9), who we're introduced to in this first video. If it's the iconic E1M1: Hanger you're after, skip straight to part two. Lots of fascinating level-design talk throughout. Some Daikatana, too.

Who's the better Pokémon: Serperior, Emboar, or Samurott?

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 09:30 AM PST

The next distribution event for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will give us a chance to score Serperior, Emboar, and Samurott, each with their own Hidden Ability. You'll need to update your game to version 1.2 and redeem a Mystery Gift code. That's it! Here's the schedule:

  • Serperior: January 22 - November 30. Use code POKEMON497 in Mystery Gift.
  • Emboar: January 29 - November 30. The code will be revealed on Pokemon.com.
  • Samurott: February 5 - November 30. The code will be revealed in the Pokémon Trainer Club newsletter.

With that info out of the way, this is your cue to fight about which of the three Pokémon is best. For me, it's unquestionably Emboar. Pokémon Black/White marked the first time I didn't start with a Water type because, sorry, Samurott, but we can't be friends. And Serperior is clearly evil.

Nippon Ichi created a Disgaea variety show to promote the latest entry

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST

The release of Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance isn't too far off, and Nippon Ichi Software has crafted a variety show of sorts called The Disgaea Channel. It's all in Japanese, but it's 30 minutes long, and features giant Prinnies hugging people, and of course, a look at the game itself.

You can use YouTube's automatic translation feature to get the gist of what's going on (use the gear icon), and it's worth flipping around if you're a big Disgaea fan just to see some of the merchandise, which starts at 24:00 in.

Smack a naked mole rat in the face in Slasher's Keep

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 08:30 AM PST

This isn't what I would have expected to see from the developer of Double Hitler, but consider me pleasantly surprised. Slasher's Keep is a first-person dungeon-crawler up on Steam Greenlight for user feedback and voting. I'm tentatively interested. Some of you will be too.

The art style, described by designer Damian Schloter as a mix of "cel-shaded models, hand-drawn sprites, and even some procedural animation," stood out to me most. But I also like that combat occurs in real time and is detailed enough to allow different types of swings and thrusts, as well as parrying. Parrying is good, except when you're bad at it. Then it's the worst.

Randomized levels, item crafting, and permadeath are also confirmed, though the latter is optional.

Assassin's Creed fans' best guesses for Victory in painstaking detail

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST

There's a normal cycle of news for finding out about upcoming videogames. After a tightly-controlled reveal, details will trickle out slowly -- just enough at a time to barely placate prospective players, their longing for the game growing ever so strong until it climaxes at release.

Or, at least, that's how it'd always go if publishers had their way.

Assassin's Creed fans are taking things into their own hands. After a leak of the code-named (or actually named) Assassin's Creed Victory, the franchise's forums are ablaze with investigative speculation as to any and all possible theories about the game. These are some of the best talking points.

Resident Evil HD did wonders for Jill's jiggle

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 07:30 AM PST

These Jill-ggle physics are making the rounds what with Resident Evil HD Remaster coming out. Turns out this jell-o oscillation is not a new addition. It's a carryover from the GameCube REmake, but a combination of HD-ness and video-capable social media are giving these headlights new life.

A more interesting titbit that came from me checking up on the newness of these boob physics is this comparison of Ashley's undulating breasts across Resident Evil 4 regions and releases.

I was surprised to see way more exaggerated breast movement in the US release of the GameCube original than in the Japanese and PAL releases. Also surprised that I never noticed it, especially given how horny everyone was in 2005. And of course the nerfed PS2 version has no breast movement at all. Gosh, women are so difficult to animate

Final Fantasy XV has a big, connected world; airships to be determined

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST

A bunch of 'lil tidbits are coming out of interviews with Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata, who is spinning the caught-up, Japanese version of, "see those mountains? You can walk there," that Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aonuma also did for the new Legend of Zelda

Will we continue to be impressed with this? Tabata did explain this goes towards the goal of creating a holistic world, telling GameSpot that with "[t]he towns and the cultural references that you see throughout the world, you'll get a sense of realistic towns and cultures." Tabata then notes that there are game areas modeled off of Shinjuku, Havana, and Venice, which are three places on different continents that are not connected by, "continuous land," as Final Fantasy XV's bro'd trip world is.

"If those areas were disconnected, it would feel distant from reality. You'll find that you'll be able to walk or drive or take a train and travel through this world seamlessly. I feel you'll be able to experience something similar to a real trip." The weird thing is that these areas' real-life reference points are incredibly disconnected and smooshing them together like these different cultures and histories grew up next to each other sounds much more uncanny to me, but maybe I'm thinking about it too hard.

Airships are "a huge technical challenge" and "to be determined." Tabata knows fans want them, but we may have to be content with plains, trains, and automobiles.

Noct joins Devolver's ever-expanding roster of amazing indie games

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 06:45 AM PST

Chris "c3sk" Eakins is an independent developer with a vision. To be more specific, Chris' vision is a high-contrast thermal camera's point of view, looking down from the sky on a darkness-enshrouded, eldritch horror-filled world.

Eakins isn't alone in this particular vision. Devolver Digital, publisher, and at times, indie games' bellwether, also shares an appreciation for the bleak, ruined world of Noct. In a surprise reveal posted by the publisher's Twitter account it was announced that the game would be joining the ranks of respected indie titles such as Hotline Miami, Early Access title Broforce, and most recently, Croteam's philosophical puzzler The Talos Principle.

We reached out to the publisher for comment on the recent announcement and Devolver spokesperson Nigel Lowrie was kind enough to get back to us with this to say: "We're super hyped to be working with Chris on Noct and can't wait to share more about the game and his vision."

Eakins also responded for comment when asked for his perspective on the enviable publishing arrangement. "These are some of the guys responsible for inspiring me to create Noct," he said, before noting that working with them has been "a dream come true."

Devolver's almost uncanny knack for discovering and promoting innovative gameplay experiences coupled with Chris' unique vision for how a top-down, minimalist, survival horror/shooter can look and feel in 2015 seems like a match made in heaven.

Noct is planned for PC, Mac, and Linux and is due to enter Steam Early Access early in 2015.

Star Wars Rebellion, Rogue Squadron 3D, and four others headed to GOG.com

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 06:30 AM PST

GOG.com released six Star Wars games on Tuesday, including X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, and now the PC game distributor is back with its next set of titles. We're in for a real treat.

Rogue Squadron 3D, Rebellion, and Empire at War: Gold Pack are available as of today. Then, on January 27, the site will add Republic Commando, Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, and Starfighter.

I'm so ready to bring down some AT-ATs in Rogue Squadron. The muscle memory is still there. Rebellion, a real-time 4X game I've somehow managed to avoid, is also calling my name.

If you're not into Star Wars, stay patient. More Lucasfilm games are coming to GOG.com this year.

DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition goes above and beyond

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST

It's been just over two years since the release of one of last gen's most polarizing titles. Back in 2010, Capcom made a bold and wildly unexpected decision to hand one of its most-loved franchises to a Western developer, and ever since many people have been vocal about their opinion of DmC Devil May Cry. A common topic for debate among fans of the Devil May Cry series is the aftermath of Ninja Theory's attempt at rebooting Capcom's beloved action-brawler.

Was it worth it? Did it succeed in what it set out to do? And just what the hell was up with Dante's new look? While many of these questions are open for discussion, none of those belittle the fact that we're still talking about the game years later. And because of that, Capcom and the folks at Ninja Theory aren't quite finished with their reimagining of the franchise. With the surprise announcement of DmC: Definitive Edition last year, along with a revisit to Devil May Cry 4 on the way, it's clear Capcom has not forgotten about its devil-hunting trash-talker.

During a special hands-on session with the Definitive Edition, I got to experience DmC with a fresh coat of paint and a much-needed re-tinkering. And after seeing how this enigmatic brawler's makeover has turned out, this new outing might just make you a believer.

Devolver's latest murderfest RONIN slices into PAX South

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 05:30 AM PST

In what seems like an unrelenting torrent of tantalizing announcements preceding PAX South, Devolver Digital has cranked the hype dial up another notch by announcing that it will publish RONIN, a new blood-soaked action/turn-based murder simulator by developer Tomasz Waclawek.

It's not exactly new in the purist sense of the word, as the early prototype for the game was entered in a Game Jam last year. In any case, its current form seen in the trailer above is a much more refined and contemporary affair. Where the original version of the ninja-like heroine was a minimalistic, pixel-art representation of the assassin, what we see today is slick, modern, and dripping with style.

In RONIN, you'll take on the role of the vengeful heroine on her mission to assassinate five prominent figures of a powerful corporation. Armed with a lethal katana, razor wire, and a grappling hook, she seems quite capable of making short work of the corporate goons unlucky enough to find themselves standing in her way.

Watch a guy 'beat' Super Mario World in six minutes

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST

Glitches, man. Glitches be crazy.

Take, for example, this one in Super Mario World, as executed by YouTuber SethBling. Thanks to what can only be described as witchcraft, the magician man manages to warp to the game's end credits in six minutes. And then he did it again in under five. Boy howdy!

The exploit was discovered and first executed by Twitch streamer Jeffw356, though SethBling is allegedly the first to pull it off on actual SNES hardware, rather than via the magic of emulation.

It's no doubt impressive, and my imaginary hat is off to both gents, but one has to wonder if it really qualifies as "beating" the game. Dunno. Guess you can yell about it in the comments.

Trailer for Telltale's Game of Thrones Episode 2 threatens open war

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 04:30 AM PST

Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series kicked off in December with Episode One: Iron from Ice. In preparation for the release of Episode Two: The Lost Lords, Telltale released the preview trailer seen above. The first half of the video recounts events from the first episode, but it does eventually get into new territory. Spoilers for those who have not yet played Iron from Ice.

Gared has completed his travels to the Wall and is seen talking with Jon Snow. Mira has what looks like a back room discussion with Tyrion about House Forrester's relationship to the throne and its possible implications. Asher, the hotheaded exile brother, shows up as the fourth playable character and flips a table.

Game of Thrones: A Telltale Game Series: The Lost Lords will appear during the week of February 3 for all of the usual platforms: Android, iOS, Mac, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Poor Nintendo never gets any Telltale lovin'.

Destiny's Crota's End Hard Mode is disappointing outside of the final fight

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST

I have a stable of around 30 people I raid with in Destiny regularly, but yesterday I picked the five I play with the most and set a scheduled time for the brand new Crota's End Hard Mode. Everyone showed up, and ten minutes after launch, the switch was flipped. We were in. Not knowing what to expect we all arrived with maxed-out weapons and a variety of Exotic armor pieces, and used our Warlocks just in case we needed the self-resurrection ability a few times (you can't resurrect in Hard Mode normally).

We breezed through the initial totem section on our first try. Same with the second bridge area. Then the Thrallway chest. Then Ir Yut. Nothing has really changed outside of the addition of a few yellow health bars for certain enemies, and a slight level increase. Our group consisted of fairly skilled players but we weren't going for the world record or anything, and we absolutely blew 75% of Hard Mode away in roughly 15 minutes.

Our disappointment sums up Destiny in general.

Castle in the Darkness leaps to PC on February 5

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 03:30 AM PST

Castle in the Darkness, the next ultra-difficult platformer from Cave Story and 1001 Spikes publisher Nicalis, is poised to debut via Steam on February 5.

The project was developed by Matt Kap, the lead artist behind The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth.

Big boss Jordan Devore vetted the game at PAX last year, likening the experience to balls-hard NES classics, such as Castlevania, adding it "could be pretty cool at the right price."

Well, that price is $6, which seems pretty nice. Cool, even.

Here's when GameStop is planning on getting shipments for amiibo Wave 3

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 03:15 AM PST

There's an internal memo going around from GameStop that highlights estimated arrival dates for the upcoming amiibo Wave 3. I have confirmed this memo with an internal source at the retailer.

This is the gist.

Bowser will arrive on February 6 for some reason as an early release. Then on February 13, Sheik, Shulk, Toon Link, Ike, King Dedede will drop. After that on February 20, you'll be able to scoop up Mega Man and Sonic.

The exact dates for Rosalina (Target), Lucario (Toys"R"Us), and Meta Knight (Best Buy) are unknown, but the former is rumored for a February 1 release.

Nintendo Download: Citizens of Earth

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST

The headliner this week is definitely Citizens of Earth on the Wii U eShop. Brittany didn't think it was the second coming of EarthBound, but there were some redeeming qualities -- maybe it's best to wait on the fence for a sale and stay tuned.

The other big release is Punch Out!! on the Wii U, which is basically a re-release using the console's native OS rather than the clunky Wii app. It's $9.99 for a limited time. The Wii U is also getting Breezeblox and Midnight, and the Throwback Sale is still happening.

On the 3DS side we have Citizens of Earth as well, in addition to S.C.A.T., and Undead Storm Nightmare. Retro City Rampage DX and Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal World Duel Carnival are on sale.

These Bloodborne PS4s are kind of lazily done, but I want them

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST

My launch PS4 died a few months ago. Yep, just up and died. So I had to pick up a new one, and figured hey, why not the Destiny white PS4 -- it's the same price, and I can give the pack-in game away.

It was a good idea at the time, but if these Bloodborne PS4s come stateside I will live to regret it. Sony has announced that in Japan, there will be both a Jet Black and Glacier White console adorned with the Bloodborne logo.

It will ship with the game, and is set for a March 26 release for 47,480 yen. Yes, it looks like a lazy emboss job (the white isn't so bad), but it's Bloodborne, guys.

TruForce Collectibles' Mega Man X figure heads to Kickstarter

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 01:00 AM PST

TrueForce Collectibles is crafting a new Mega Man X figure for your enjoyment. Like what you see? Then you probably want to back it on its brand new Kickstarter. To actually get the figure you'll need to pledge at least $80, and that level will net you a pre-order. All of the prior levels involve extras like shirts.

The project needs $200,000 in total, and within the span of a day, has raised roughly $20,000. All of the rights have been officially acquired from Capcom, so there's probably not going to be any cease-and-desist chicanery.

Battlefield Hardline will be part of EA Access' early trial program

Posted: 22 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST

Battlefield Hardline has had some mixed reception due to its beta, but it was put on the backburner for a March 2015 release, and apparently the feedback given was taken under consideration.

While you wait for the game to actually come out, EA Access members will probably be happy to know that it will hit their program. For the uninitiated, EA Access has a few different perks, one of which is a six-hour trial period that's active five days before the official launch.

Dragon Age: Inquisition already made use of this program, which was one of the better trial-worthy games given all of the disappointment associated with Dragon Age II. Say what you will about EA, but I'm glad more people will get a chance to try it out before thousands plunk down their pre-order cash sight unseen (don't do that).

Adorable fan-made mock-up of Kid Icarus Advance

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST

We've seen a lot of great indie developers propose fun reinventions of classic Nintendo franchises lately. The sports-action Daisy title imagined Konjak looks amazing, as does the concept for a new Wario Land game by Snakepixel

None of those mock-ups actually move though. At least, not yet. For now we'll have to be content with seeing this little GBA-style Kid Icarus game mock-up video in motion. It even stays true to the original Uprising, complete with running dialogue between Pit and Palutena across the bottom of the screen. This bit of fan art comes to us care of Davitsu, who also has some great low-res Smash Bros. dot art up on their tumblr

Davitsu works for Rantan Games, a company that I had never heard of until now. Some of their titles include Cats Outernet and Give me that: TURBO!. Even if they don't turn out to be much, I feel like I am a better person just for knowing that there are videogames with those names out there in the world.
