You saw Microsoft's crazy hologram headset, right?

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 02:00 PM PST

Earlier today, Microsoft held a Windows 10 event. My stream kept dying, but I posted about the Battletoads shirt worn by head of Xbox Phil Spencer during his segment about gaming.

Much of the event was uninteresting or irrelevant for this audience, with one huge exception: an augmented-reality headset called Project HoloLens that can display holograms all around you.

Outlets like Wired, The Verge, and Gizmodo were able to try out the device and several demos, including a basic version of Minecraft shown above. Take your pick. Then, jealousy.

It's the debut of Amber's Unboxing Series!

When I first heard about Loot Crate, I didn't think it would take off. A company sends you random stuff once a month? For someone like me, that's a nightmare. The inventory box of my life is already completely full. Any time I get something new, I have to toss something out to make space. The last thing I want in life is another random drop to test my decision making skills. The same thing happens to me in EarthBound all the time, but in real life, there is no Mach Pizza to call for storage assistance. You could say that they are the opposite of Loot Crate in that way.

So that's why I didn't get into Loot Crate, but they seem to be doing just fine without me. With hundreds of thousands of subscribers, it's clear that they offer a service that people are interested in. But as successful as they are, we know that most of the people alive today are not Loot Crate subscribers, despite the fact that literally everyone in the world wants to know what's in those darn crates. If you tell someone that there is a crate, they are going want to know what's in it. That's just human nature.

With that in mind, we asked our pal Amber Hunt if she wanted to start a little Loot Crate unboxing series with us, and she happily agreed. To be clear, Amber is not being paid by Loot Crate for this, and is not obligated in any way to say anything nice about their wares. She'll review every crate honestly and fairly, just as Dtoid does with the games we receive for review.

If this goes well here, Amber may go on to do more in-depth videos with Dtoid in the future, so stay tuned. Thanks again to Amber for taking this on, and welcome to the team!

The Etsy crowd is making some great custom amiibo

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST

We post a lot of amiibo stuff on Destructoid, and when I say we, I mean "not me." That ends today.

I couldn't pass up this chance to highlight the custom amiibo scene on Etsy. The results are admittedly hit or miss -- this is Etsy -- but even the misses have a certain humorous charm to them.

Let's take a look.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection's next update requires public beta testing

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 11:30 AM PST

343 Industries has had enough issues with Halo: The Master Chief Collection that, two months after release, it's come to this: public beta testing for an impending large-scale content update.

Testers will be chosen from a pool of North American players with high levels of engagement who have also opted into the Xbox One Preview Program. The beta is happening Friday and, depending how everything goes, the public at large will presumably get the update not long after.

According to 343, there will be "changes to the matchmaking experience and party system." At this rate, exceptions aside, there shouldn't be much trust left in stable day-one game releases.

Nintendo is giving away a Majora's Mask New 3DS

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST

My fellow legal residents of the United States--and also you dastardly Canadiens--you're in luck. Yet another chance to score a Majora's Mask New 3DS XL, but this time for free, and with a copy of the game included (in North America, the system doesn't come with the game pre-loaded).

Nintendo is giving out one console and Majora's Mask 3DS to a lucky contest winner. You just have to be over the age of 13 and not from Quebec.

Also you have to make a cool mask, though it doesn't have to be a copy of any of the masks in the game. So this time you don't have to be quick on the net, just talented. You also have four days to submit your entry. In bocca al lupo!

Doin' it for you: A (parody) song for the community

[Associate Editor, community member and Mother Superior of the Razor Nuns Brittany Vincent wrote and recorded a song for the community.  A damn song!  How awesome is that? Want to see your own stuff appear on the front page? Go write/record something! --Occams Electric Toothbrush]

Sometimes I get bored and I like to sing. Sometimes I like to write parodies of popular songs. I like a lot of terrible pop songs so I do this a lot. When it counts, I write parodies meant for a cause, like winning a contest or making a statement.

Bandits and Bounties is almost a new Law of the West

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 09:30 AM PST

If you like spaghetti westerns (and you should), take a look at Bandits and Bounties. It's a top-down action RPG that combines fast-paced arcade style action with the bleak Western setting we all know and love. The game is currently looking for funding on Kickstarter, with a funding goal of $15,000.

At first glance, Bandits and Bounties seems like Hotline Miami but with 1000% more saloons. There's certainly truth in that assumption, but the game skews more Dungeons and Dragons than anything else. The game's character creator goes beyond skin-deep forehead shaders, instead giving players a wealth of stats to min-max. And I'm not exaggerating when I say "wealth." Get a look at this stuff. "Investigate: 0.8?"

There will also supposedly be a variety of ways to handle each combat encounter, including dialogue trees. According to the Kickstarter, "The dialogue system in this game more closely resembles the diplomacy system from a strategy game. You can negotiate, threaten, and ally with characters in the game. Much of the dialogue also happens in real-time, so if the conversation starts going sour, drawing your gun or throwing a punch is an option."

I love that kind of stuff: telling me I can end fights by talking my way out of them is basically my Manchurian Candidate code phrase. If you found Bandits and Bounties as interesting as I did, you should kick a few dollars their way or give them a thumbs up on Greenlight. Do whatever, just so we can all live the Wild West fantasy I've always dreamed of: all the moral ambiguity, none of the dysentery!

Square Enix is making me take my shoes off, which socks should I wear?

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST

I'm going to go check out Dontnod's Life is Strange tomorrow ahead of its January 30 release and, well, life is strange. In the housekeeping email about the appointment, there were some bold lines (like embargo) with pertinent bullet points underneath (expect our review next Thursday).

The third bold line, though.

"Shoes

  • Because we're using an Airbnb, you'll need to take off your shoes in advance. SEA will provide slippers, or you can go barefoot or wear clean socks. Weird I know, but it's apparently non-negotiable."

Now, I'm okay with this. I'm a firm believer of a "no shoes indoors" rule. Seems like common sense to me and on the side of my front door is a mountain of shoes that says politely to guests, "Take your fucking shoes off you filthy animal." Still, this is a bit different. I love to look my best. So what socks should I rocks tomorrow?

Review: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (Patch 2.5)

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST

Final Fantasy XIV has come a long way. Although there wasn't any real endgame content to speak of when A Realm Reborn launched in its 2.0 incarnation, Square Enix worked hard to deliver in 2.1, and has continued to deliver in every major patch since.

With each update came new "Primal" (read: Summon) fights, all of which had an Extreme version to test the mettle of its playerbase. Now, the developer is gearing up for an expansion later this year, and the latest 2.5 patch has provided a ton of mid-level content, with no Extreme or proper hardcore raid in sight.

That makes this patch rather unique, and players of all skill levels will enjoy it.

We at Destructoid have the inside scoop on Evolve's unrevealed DLC monsters. Official artwork still needs to be finalized, but we have gone the extra mile and provided you with artist's renditions of the terrifying creatures. Included are quotes from each monster designer on the creation's abilities.

Guest Op/Ed: The real sources of unethical videogame journalism

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST

[Note: The Badger could be anyone -- a game developer, a member of the gaming press, even a writer for another game blog. They could be just one person or multiple people. You'll probably never find out who they really are, which is part of the fun.]

Watching people on the internet hunting for "unethical videogame journalism" is like watching a gas-poisoned family poke around their house, desperately in search of the source of the fumes. Oh, and did I mention that every member of the family is blind? Because apparently they are. How else could they miss the giant pipe coming from the kitchen wall that says "POISON GAS THAT MAKES YOU STUPID THEN KILLS YOU" written in sparkling bling on the side?

Maybe they aren't blind. Maybe it's worse than that, because they do talk about the pipe in passing now and again. They just don't do anything about it. They act like it's just an inevitable part of life. Instead, they point their fingers at the cat and the dog for #colluding on the creation of collective pet farts that are definitely the source of the poisonous gas. Definitely.

Watching this go down is kind of like being the host of the Price is Right where the contestant has an open headwound and the prize they're trying to win is some gauze and skin glue. You want to help, but you really can't. You want to laugh, but you also want to cry. Instead, you just watch with a shit-eating grin, waiting to see if they win the bandages, die from their injuries, or just stand there with blood pouring down their face.

I'm just some anonymous fuckface, and it's going to stay that way. What I have to say isn't going to change anything. Still, Destructoid has given me a platform to try to whisper a few tips into the ear of the blood-drenched, probably brain-injured Price is Right contestant that we call "gamer culture," so here we go. Here is where unethical gaming journalism really comes from.

Not going to PAX South? Here's the next best thing

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 05:30 AM PST

San Antonio, Texas will be the epicenter of the gaming world this weekend as thousands descend upon the city for the first incarnation of PAX South. No one really knows how it'll go. Maybe it'll mark the beginning of the third major PAX in North America; maybe it'll be a complete bust.

If you're making the trip, you'll get to find out first-hand how everything turns out. If not, you can live vicariously through Internet videos. Twitch will be on-site and streaming live from the show floor. From the streaming giant's booth, there'll be live interviews with developers and publishers, and probably some game playin'. Twitch is also broadcasting its town hall panel on Friday at 2pm PST.

As extra incentive to watch, Twitch is giving out Blizzard content along the way. Hearthstone card pack keys and Heroes of the Storm beta codes will be up for grabs throughout the weekend. And, if you're lucky enough to be at the show, maybe you'd be interested in swinging by the Twitch party on Friday night (registration for that event is here.)

Make your very own clay Kirby

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST

This is the good stuff right here. HAL Laboratory has a delightful little website with making-of photos for Kirby and the Rainbow Curse and a video showing how to create your own clay Kirby.

Between this, The Neverhood, Skullmonkeys, and The Swapper, I find myself wishing that more developers would pick up a clay set. These handcrafted games will forever feel special.

Nice Battletoads shirt, Phil Spencer

That's Battletoads alright. The time is now.

EVO 2015 lineup: Smash, Persona, Tekken, and more

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 03:30 AM PST

The roster for this year's Evolution Championship Series has been announced.

EVO 2015, the largest fighting game tournament in the world, will feature: Ultra Street Fighter IV, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-, Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat X, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Tekken 7.

That's a nice collection of games, but there's a disappointing dearth of BlazBlue after last year's legendary grand final. Oh well, there's still plenty of Arc System Works goodness to go around.

EVO 2015 is scheduled to take place July 17-19 at the Bally’s / Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino.

Theatrhythm: Curtain Call gets equipped with World Ends With You and Chrono Trigger DLC

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call was a joy to play. It was absolutely packed with content, so the fact that DLC has been steadily dropping since launch hasn't bothered me -- all in all, it's one of the biggest rhythm games ever made.

Should you want DLC, Square Enix will oblige, especially this week in Japan. The kicker is that two songs of Chrono Trigger and The World Ends With You are arriving in-game, as well as a track each from FFVIII and Romancing SaGa 3.

See below for the full track list, and it's pretty clear that it will come west at some point.

Bungie delivers quick Destiny hotfix before Crota's End Hard Mode

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 02:30 AM PST

Bungie is gearing up to release its last bit of major content before the next Destiny expansion, the Hard Mode version of the Crota's End raid. Before that, a quick hotfix was dropped that adjusts the bridge encounter, as well as a small glitch involving Crota himself.

No one knows what Hard Mode has in store for us, but my static raid group has some guesses based on some glitches we've encountered (more Ogres, gatekeepers during Crota, more Oversouls to worry about). Previously, Bungie announced that everything should be good to go for Hard Mode at 1PM EST, but now the studio is saying that it will announce the exact release period at that time. Let's hope it's not delayed.

Swapnote's Nikki to return in Nikki's Travel Quiz

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST

I miss Swapnote. I mean, it's still around, but dropping SpotPass functionality has basically rendered it impotent. The thing is, even when it was fully functional, most of the messages I got came from Nikki, who I always assumed was a real person rather than a fictional character.

Real or not, it looks like Nikki is getting her own game, at least in Japan. Though we heard no mention of it in the North American announcement, the Japanese Club Nintendo site makes a brief mention of Nikki's Travel Quiz, which will be available for 80 Club Nintendo points. It is not clear if Nikki's latest 3DS offering will make it to Western markets, but here's hoping.

Surprise! Elder Scrolls Online is dropping the fee for existing subscribers, console version dated

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 01:30 AM PST

When I reviewed The Elder Scrolls Online back at launch I thought it had potential, but not enough to keep people paying for subscription time. Plenty of MMOs have enjoyed a subscription-based model, and games like World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV give you enough content to sustain said model. But that doesn't seem to be the case for ESO, as ZeniMax has announced that it will be dropping its subscription fee.

The plan is to flip a switch and go free on March 17 on the PC for existing owners, re-branded as The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited. To be clear, new owners will need to purchase the base game (which basically means it is using the Guild Wars 2 model of "buy-to-play"), but then they can play without a fee. After that, PS4 and Xbox One players finally have a date on their version, set for June 9. There will be an optional subscription package (as is standard) called "ESO Plus," which gives you extra in-game bonuses and more crown currency to spend, as well as DLC access -- in other words, microtransactions are still in.

It's going to be an interesting year for MMOs, especially if ZeniMax can turn things around. You can watch an official livestream from the developer today at 12pm EST for more information.

Gunman Clive 2 is on track for a January 3DS release

Posted: 21 Jan 2015 12:30 AM PST

A few of us over at Destructoid are eagerly awaiting the old-west platformer Gunman Clive 2, which was slightly delayed in the US and in Europe due to some quality control. Everything is all clear it seems, as creator Bertil Horberg has announced that Clive is set for a January 29 release date in both regions.

The final date is in time for next week's Nintendo Download update. Horberg notes that he has "jitters" during this pre-release time, but if it's anything like its predecessor, he doesn't have anything to worry about. The price is reportedly going to be $2.99 this time, a $1 increase from its predecessor.

The best part about this Majora's Mask 3D gyroscope demo is that you can turn the feature off

Posted: 20 Jan 2015 11:00 PM PST

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D is out on February 13, 2015. I've completed it, and our review will come in February. I know, I know, but at least you'll get a pre-launch review, right?!

This new video from Nintendo shows off the gyroscope aiming feature that was in Ocarina of Time 3D, compliments of Eiji Aonuma. The best part? You can turn off gyroscope controls entirely just like Ocarina, and the left analog stick is pretty damn effective.

During the DS and Wii era, Nintendo would have stubbornly forced us to use this "revolutionary" type of play control. Now with systems like the Wii U and the 3DS, we have actual options just in case we don't prefer them.
