These Witcher 3 steelbook covers look incredible Posted: 02 Jan 2015 01:00 PM PST CD Projekt RED has sent over some pictures of the new steelbook covers for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and they are gorgeous. There will be six renditions in all, which will be available with the Collector's Edition of the game. They are done by artist Krzysztof Domaradzki, and I'm loving how it looks like a classic Drew Struzan poster with Domaradzki's own style. This game looks better every time I see it, and I'm glad CD Projekt delayed it to iron out some of the bugs.
Metal Gear Solid V will have a chicken hat that makes the game easier Posted: 02 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST In a recent three hour stream of Metal Gear Solid V, there was one particular tidbit that might have passed some people over -- the Chicken Hat. Apparently when Phantom Pain drops there will be a special hat that allows people to essentially "Super Guide" themselves after dying a bunch. Enemies will be slower in general and the game will be easier while wearing it. This will no doubt help newcomers acclimate, as the franchise has always been a source of frustration for some folks. I've seen a few people get mad at the chicken hat already and I just have to ask "why?" I'm sure people won't think less of you if you use the hat once or twice. [Thanks Aaron!]
Here's a cool amiibo infographic that displays all known compatibility Posted: 02 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST The amiibo craze is real, but some people aren't super keen on the collectible aspect and choose to focus on the in-game functionality. That's cool, but it can get a bit confusing as to what games are actually supported. Thankfully Twitter user MoldyClay 64 has created a cool looking infographic to shed some light on the situation. Including two Japan-only confirmed games, the count is now up to six titles that we know about (Smash, Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, Ace Combat 3D, One Piece, Kirby And The Rainbow Curse), and five titles that we aren't quite sure on yet (Captain Toad, Yoshi's Wooly World, Mario Party 8, Star Fox, and Zelda). That's a decent number of games right now, but I hope the Captain Toad functionality is revealed sooner than later. MoldyClay 64 [Twitter]
Duck Hunt amiibo files allegedly found on-disc for Smash Wii U Posted: 02 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST It makes perfect sense that Nintendo would have every amiibo file already on the Super Smash Bros. Wii U disc, but this video apparently confirms that fact. Taken by YouTube user Mema Haxx, it shows the character (known as "Duck Hunt Duo" in Europe) in the amiibo section of the main menu. The amiibo hasn't even been announced yet. Will the figure come in the inevitable Wave 4? Time will tell, but the possibility that all of the amiibo data is already in the game waiting to be manipulated is interesting.
Collector's Corner: How do you handle trinkets and toys? Posted: 02 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST It's been a while since the last episode of Collector's Corner, but with the amiibo-craze happening I figured it's a good time to check in with the gang. For the most part, when we talk about videogame collectors, we're talking actual cold hard videogames. Whether it's a retro or modern flavored collection, discs or cartridges, there's plenty of game hunting to be found, despite the fact that a lot of stores have already phased out older platforms. But what about trinkets? You know, toys, figures, books, and of course, amiibo. Do you have the fever for merchandise too? Or do you just stick to games?
Friday Night Fights: Resolutions Posted: 02 Jan 2015 07:30 AM PST Happy Friday! And Happy New Year! So what say you, Friday Faithful? Will you make any resolutions this year? Will you stick to them throughout the year? Let me know in the comments below, I'm genuinely curious to know what you think.
ZHeros looks like a pretty neat robotic brawler Posted: 02 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST Developer Rimlight Studios is hard at work at a new brawler that looks deliciously oldschool. It's called ZHeros (yep, not Heroes) and it has a futuristic theme as well as a neat looking visual style. The announcement trailer above shows off some gameplay, so you can get a good look as to what to expect when it drops in 2015. It will launch on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC platforms. [Thanks Rick!]
Clock Tower successor Project Scissors looks scary Posted: 02 Jan 2015 06:30 AM PST Nude Maker, a Japanese studio helmed by Clock Tower creator Hifumi Kono, has shared the debut trailer for its upcoming horror game, Project Scissors: Night Cry. Night Cry, revealed at Tokyo Game Show last September, is a spiritual successor to Clock Tower, a series of survival horror point-and-click adventure games made by now-defunct publisher Human Entertainment. It's in development for PlayStation Vita and mobile devices. Sadly, it's not gameplay, but this thirty second live action teaser put together by Japanese filmmaker Takashi Shimizu, the director behind horror films Ju-On and The Grudge, should give you some idea about the vibe and atmosphere Night Cry endeavors to convey. The experience is set aboard a luxury cruise liner, where a series of gruesome murders transpire while the boat is at sea. After the ship's crew is killed, the adrift vessel becomes a prison for the remaining passengers, who must solve the mystery as they try to survive. Playism promises more details from the development team by the end of January.
Forbidden Magna is likely getting a localization by XSEED Posted: 02 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST XSEED Games has likely revealed their newest localization project by way of a new trademark registration -- Forbidden Magna for the Nintendo 3DS. It will be coming to the US as "Lord of Magna" if the site is to be believed. The game is a strategy RPG that operates similarly to Valkyria Chronicles, as you can move around within reason to setup your attacks before triggering them. XSEED hasn't made a full announcement yet so this could be an expansion or port, but we'll see soon enough. Lord of Magna [Lord of Magna.com via RPGSite]
The God Eater 2: Rage Burst intro looks pretty rad Posted: 02 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST Compliments of anime studio ufotable, Bandai Namco has released the opening movie of God Eater 2: Rage Burst, and I'm digging the animation. In case you were wondering, the Rage Burst moniker indicates an expansion of sorts, with extra missions, story, and equipment. Rage Burst is still headed for the PlayStation 4 and Vita on February 14th in Japan. A localization hasn't been announced.
The PlayStation 4 Planetside 2 beta might arrive this month Posted: 02 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST PS4 owners may be able to finally enjoy Planetside 2 this month in beta form. Although the game was supposed to be released on the PS4 in early 2014, it's since been delayed with very little to go on in terms of a new release date. But according to Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley, we may see it very soon. After responding to a fan, Smedley stated that the PS4 version was approved, and it should go up "the week of the 14th or 20th." The studio is apparently still on vacation until January 5th, so they'll have more information then. I'm not sure who is still excited for this after such a long delay (and the fact that the PC version has been available since 2012), but I'm just glad it wasn't canceled. John Smedley [Twitter]
Toys"R"Us apparently canceling select Lucario amiibo orders...again Posted: 02 Jan 2015 02:25 AM PST Back in December, Toys"R"Us canceled every Lucario amiibo pre-order (and some random Wave 2 or 3 orders). It sucked, because the figure is exclusive and they already took thousands of orders on them weeks before the cancellation. They seemingly made it right though as many orders were either re-instated a few days later, or customers were given a coupon to get a discount off the "$999.99" placeholder to avoid scalpers picking up the rest of the stock. But according to multiple users the system seems to be having issues yet again, and some orders that were re-instated have been canceled for a second time. I was first informed of the problem by a reader on Twitter, who explained the situation. I asked if anyone else had the same issue, and three others chimed in via messages or DMs to inform me that their order was also gone. At the time of this writing, my order is fine, but I wanted to know more. Investigating further, I checked into a few communities and it looks like it's not an isolated problem. I've contacted Toys"R"Us, but in the meantime if you are affected, contact customer service and find out what the deal is -- with their first cancellation debacle you could ask for a $25 giftcode. I'd also recommend jettisoning all of your Wave 3 pre-orders from Toys"R"Us to another company if possible.
Club Nintendo Europe is having issues, Nintendo is on it Posted: 02 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST Yesterday the Club Nintendo service in Europe was having some issues. In addition to downtime, some users are reporting that their stars (coins in the US version) are not appearing in their account. Nintendo has noted that although the downtime problem is solved, you may not see all of your stars back yet. If they are erased, don't panic! The publisher will apparently return them to your account soon. Some users are reporting to us that everything is all good, but a few are still having trouble, so just give it some time before logging in again. Nintendo of Europe [Twitter]
Modders hilariously put Kojima into MGSV: Ground Zeroes' starring role Posted: 02 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST While there's nothing inherently wrong with console games, I get a certain amount of joy from PC mods that aren't possible on other platforms. One such mod is a new fan-created change to Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, that places Hideo Kojima in the starring role. Kojima already existed in-game in every version by way of an extra mission, so the process was simple enough, and the character model is pretty faithful.
Leaked photo shows Bungie's possible plans for Destiny in 2015 Posted: 01 Jan 2015 10:37 PM PST A new leak has been revealed that may shed some light on what's in store for Destiny in 2015. So far we have the Dark Below expansion that came out in December and House of Wolves coming in March, but that's all we know. The leak shows that a "massive" expansion might be coming in September 2015 called "Comet: Plague of Darkness." It's allegedly going to be marketed on a disc because of how large it is -- three new subclasses are rumored. After that, there will be two more DLC packs -- one of them will deal with the Vex (again) and the other may be Cabal related. "Comet" is apparently "Destiny 1.5," and if the schedule is to be believed, there will be no Destiny 2 in 2015, since the last leaked expansion will hit in December. Finally, a "GOTY-like" edition is planned after Comet, which would include everything. If Bungie can make incremental free update improvements along the way, Destiny may be worth picking up down the line. All Destiny DLC [Bungie.net via FWC]
