| Australia gets second wave of Majora's Mask New 3DS units Posted: 19 Jan 2015 02:30 PM PST Nintendo's Australia and New Zealand region Twitter account noted that, as is the case elsewhere, "Due to overwhelming demand, New Nintendo 3DS XL Majora’s Mask Edition is currently unavailable for pre-order in AU/NZ." "[H]owever," it continues, "an additional limited quantity will come to AU/NZ in March. Stay tuned to your local retailer for availability." While this limited quantity isn't coming to the region until March, EB Games Australia has pre-orders for the tardy units open right now. Play-Asia has a listing for the US territory version of the console (pre-order option coming soon), where it will likely be sold at a markup not too dissimilar to the for-profit flips littering eBay. Meanwhile, Amazon UK sold out a few hours after it went on sale earlier today. No word yet if the US will be getting second stock of the sold out system, or if it'll be up for purchase at any other retailers (like Amazon). Aside from paying extra, the only other hope for American audiences right now is catching a loose GameStop pre-order that wasn't paid for by today and thus free game to pick up tomorrow. | Little Mac's true calling revealed Posted: 19 Jan 2015 01:00 PM PST Believe it or not, but someone at Nintendo actually liked the Captain Falcon's ass tribute amiibo video we did last month. Thanks to that happenstance, I ended up with an extra Little Mac amiibo a couple of days ago. I felt it was my solemn duty to take this fortuitous event as an opportunity for video production, but how do you follow something like Captain Falcon's ass? Rapping about parts of Mac's body would just end up feeling derivative and tacked on. Or would it? If Nintendo likes this episode of Samba de Amiibo as much as the original, then expect to see more amiibo music videos from Destructoid in the future. I'm also thinking of pitching Samus and Sagat to them for release on Nintendo Video. Do you think they'll go for it? |
| Upgrade Complete 3mium pokes fun at awful free-to-play games Posted: 19 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST Did you like DLC Quest, conceptually? You might also dig Upgrade Complete 3mium, a short browser-based game that parodies the worst aspects of free-to-play gaming. You're forced to play the crappy lite version of the game and shoot down waves of alien ships to afford upgrades like "enable sound" and "font." Best of all, the joke doesn't outstay its welcome. I haven't played the earlier Upgrade Complete titles, but 3mium is fun. Well, maybe not fun -- more like satisfying. In a clinical sense. Progress for the sake of progress. Lighting-rod guns for the sake of lighting-rod guns. And I was not prepared for that surprise ending. Or those jump-scares. Upgrade Complete 3mium [Armor Games] |
| Students create a self-aware Mario who contemplates death Posted: 19 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST In the film Grizzly Man, director Werner Herzog layers his own thoughts on life, death, and everything in between over footage of ill-fated bear enthusiast Timothy Treadwell. I kept getting Grizzly Man flashbacks while watching the above video, and it's not just because the narrator has a German accent. There is something about the existential dilemma presented here that smacks of Herzog's style. A self-aware Mario, capable succumbing to drives like hunger and curiosity while grasping the absolute quality of death is a Mario that's more than ready for Cannes. In the Mario games, death never feels all that real. If it did, then the player might feel guilty or sad as they trample multiple reptile or fungus-based animals to death on their way to victory. To see Mario exclaim "If I jump on Goomba, then it certainly dies" is to paint the picture of either an unfeeling sociopath in blue overalls, or a internally conflicted mustached baby-man who is constantly tortured by his own monstrous deeds. Needless to say, Nintendo would do well to incorporate this self-awareness functionality into Mario Maker, complete with Charles Martinet voice acting. "We're all-ah gonna die someday no mattah what, so what's-ah the point of anything? Woo hoo!" |
| You could play Woah Dave! on an actual NES cart Posted: 19 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST Do you ever think about what it would be like to play your favorite sprite-based indie games on the consoles they were influenced by? Well, you might be able to do just that with Woah Dave!, an NES-inspired game which could possibly be coming to the NES itself! Game creator Jason Cirillo of Choice Provisions recently spoke with Tiny Cartridge about the idea. "Yes, we are very keen on doing a cart-based version of Woah Dave! [with a custom box]," Cirillo said. "Our preferred platform would be NES because the NES is rad. I think we can all agree on that." Granted, he says they would probably have to tone down the gameplay a bit to keep it running smoothly on an NES, but this would be awesome nonetheless. Woah Dave! has that classic arcade gameplay which would fit perfectly among the system's library alongside similar titles like Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong. As a collector of physical media who still buys game carts from time to time, this is very exciting news for me. I've always thought about how cool it would've been to play more recent games like Cave Story or VVVVVV on older consoles. Maybe Choice Provisions could inspire other developers to follow suit. Which games do you think would fit perfectly on an older system? And would you ever buy a cart of your favorite indie game? Woah Dave could become a real NES game (woah) [Tiny Cartridge] |
| All the deals for Resident Evil HD Remaster on PC Posted: 19 Jan 2015 09:15 AM PST Tomorrow at midnight Eastern, PC gamers will be treated to the re-release of a re-release in the form of Resident Evil HD Remaster. The overhauled graphics and audio rate pretty well just about everywhere you'll find it reviewed including a 9.5/10 on Destructoid. The game activates on Steam, where it's priced at $19.99, but you need not pay quite that much. Below we've compiled a list of authorized retailers selling Steam keys at 20% – 43% off. Noice. |
| Fan-made Silent Hill game looks like a disturbing delight Posted: 19 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST If you're looking for something spooky to hold you over between P.T and the full release of Silent Hills, you may be interested in this new, free, fan-made Source mod, Silent Hill: Alchemilla. For a fan effort, Alchemilla looks gorgeous, perfectly capturing the rusty-gratey charm of Silent Hill's damned city. Plenty of shout-outs to favorites such as the twitchy nurses appear in the trailer, but don't worry about having to fight them. While the mod team would have apparently loved to have had the player tangling with monsters, it just wasn't within the scope of the project. The developers opted instead for a much more measured, adventure-game-like trip through the Otherworld. Expect plenty of head-scratching puzzles and careful exploration if you want to make it through – they warn that you may want to bring a pen and paper along. How very old-school. Considering I have historically LOATHED the combat, movement, and just about all of the other “gamey” parts of the Silent Hill series, the exclusion is more of a positive than a negative to me. Being able to enjoy the atmosphere and darkness of the Silent Hill world without having to steer a clunky protagonist around a slug monster while flailing about with a lead pipe seems like a welcome relief. I can't wait to give this mod a try once the sun goes down. |
| Blizzard's sending a seriously cool gift to World of Warcraft's ten-year subscribers Posted: 19 Jan 2015 07:30 AM PST A decade is a decent stretch of time by any account, but it's an especially long time to routinely play an MMO. Blizzard wants to recognize the dedication of the select few players that have stuck by World of Warcraft since the very beginning, so it's sending out a special thank you gift. According to a post on MMO Champion, Blizzard's shipping a bronze statue to accounts that were created within 60 days of the game's launch date. The statue is a likeness of the large monument outside Blizzard headquarters that depicts an orc riding a wolf. World of Warcraft released on November 23, 2004 in North America, and February 11, 2005 in Europe. Pictures of the ornate figurine have already surfaced, and there's a sentimental note printed on the bottom of the base. It reads "The orc statue is a constant presence in our life at Blizzard entertainment. It's where we meet to talk, to eat, to celebrate. As we celebrate ten years of World of warcraft, we present this token of appreciation to you, stalwart adventurer. Thank you for being a constant presence in our lives as we adventure together." This gesture is certainly a classy move by Blizzard to celebrate the people that helped get them to ten years on their flagship title. It may be a long ways off to say a game's going to make it another ten years, but if the dedication of WoW fans is any indication, we'll probably be talking about a neat 20-year gift a decade from now. | Sony Online offered H1Z1 refunds after pay-to-win complaints Posted: 19 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST H1Z1, Sony Online Entertainment's bizarrely-named version of DayZ, was the center of a kerfuffle over the weekend that didn't even have to do with the game not working at its Early Access launch. Rather, the community leveled "pay to win" complaints following the glut of "our game won't be pay-to-win" claims that always precede releases of games that have micro transactions (H1Z1's Early Access is not free-to-play). They have to do with concrete studio claims that you can't buy resources like guns, ammunition, and food, followed by fans learning that those items can indeed be found in paid airdrop events. SOE's thinking is that these server-wide events, wherein someone can poach your paid-for drop, are different from being able to just click "buy" and get a gun in your inventory with real life cash, but folks are still upset. SOE president John Smedley took to the game's sub reddit on Friday to offer "no questions asked" refunds over the weekend, "till Monday." These refunds are not through Steam, but direct through Sony Online. Should you try to get a Steam refund, you'd get money back in your Steam wallet rather than however you paid for it. By Friday evening Smedley seemed satisfied that only, ".5% of the people that have bought are taking us up on the refund," but it'd be nice to know what the final numbers are. Plus, I doubt every H1Z1 buyer--it was Steam's top-seller despite not working--is jacked in to a sub reddit. Some people like to go get pizza across the bay on weekends, or crawl into hot tub holes and then get ramen. Of the vocal and jacked in fans, they seem to want fixes rather than refunds and Smedley notes that the team is, "making adjustments to the airdrops that are appropriate." No questions asked refund policy [Reddit] |
| Grey Goo launch trailer shows who's the most ruthless of them all Posted: 19 Jan 2015 06:30 AM PST Mankind's made an existence-long mission out of traveling to other planets and finding alien lifeforms. As this launch trailer for Grey Goo depicts, we might not necessarily like what we find. The Petroglyph real-time strategy game launches this week, and that's when we can finally take hold of humanity's fight and conquer in the name of science. Or, you could control the Goo and wipe out anyone that dares challenge your stake to your home world. But, you should probably set up shop in man's corner; looks like we could use all the help we can get. |
| It's time for some Paul Robertson gifs Posted: 19 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST This ghost, Mister Specter, comes from Curses 'N Chaos, an upcoming co-op arcade action title about smashing monsters. Developer Tribute Games (Mercenary Kings, Wizorb) has shared gifs of the first three bosses designed by Justin Cyr and animated by Paul Robertson. This was one of the first emails I saw this morning and now I wish every day began with gifs. |
| Majora's Mask New 3DS XL listing pops up on Play-Asia Posted: 19 Jan 2015 05:30 AM PST If you've missed out on getting a Majora's Mask themed New 3DS XL from GameStop and Best Buy, there seems to be hope yet. A listing for the system has appeared on Play-Asia, with pre-order availability "coming soon." So I guess keep checking back on that page for when pre-orders open. Also remember that some of your GameStop orders that weren't paid for actually did reserve you a system and you have until the end of business today to pay for it. With that, any unpaid-for systems will go back up for sale on Tuesday, so watch GameStop's online store or check if your local store has any loose stock. That console listing on Nintendo's site reads currently unavailable, so its likely that that page would have just linked to retailers (none of which have any more stock), rather than offer customers a chance to buy the New 3DS directly from Nintendo, as you could have done on the UK store. Thanks for the tip, scentlessapprentice. |
| This Oculus title will let you see through the eyes of a god Posted: 19 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST Virtual reality is particularly useful in letting players get a truer first-person experience than ever before. But, the technology isn't limited to simulating the existence of other mere mortals. No, it opens the door to offering a first-hand look at literally anything the developer wants to show. In Pneuma, Breath of Life, it's the life of a god that's on display. Through the mechanics of a gorgeous puzzler, the developers claim that they want to "not only challenge your mind, but your own sense of self." While working to solve environmental challenges, players will simultaneously explore reality and beyond through the eyes of a god. Pneuma isn't only scheduled to make excellent use of Oculus Rift. Actually, it's going to be a month-long Xbox One exclusive beginning on February 27. After that, it looks ready to come to PC soon afterward. |
| Sid Meier's Starships is a 'tactical space combat' continuation of Civilization: Beyond Earth Posted: 19 Jan 2015 04:30 AM PST Civilization and XCOM studio Firaxis Games is sticking with space for its next game, Sid Meier's Starships. The studio and publisher 2K describe it as a "new turn-based, adventure-driven interstellar strategy game" (PC, Mac, iPad) based on the existing Beyond Earth universe. The video, if you haven't already rushed to click play, is the game's intro sequence. No gameplay! "My goal was to create an experience that focuses on starship design and combat within a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration," said Sid Meier. Players will grow their fleet, research technologies, and blow other ships to pieces. As for the part of the game that makes weekends instantly vanish, "Each new campaign will feature its own distinctive galactic strategy map of worlds with dynamically generated tactical combat missions." Firaxis also hinted at cross-game functionality between Beyond Earth and Starships. Owning both titles "will enhance and expand the depth of both game experiences" in some way. |
| Report: Rosalina is coming to Target on January 30 Posted: 19 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST Nintendo is still quiet on the exact release dates of many upcoming amiibo. It's really annoying. But thanks to an intrepid Target employee, we may have our first lead on Rosalina. As we know, she is exclusive to Target, and her initial online pre-orders sold out in 15 minutes -- so unless you imported from a European or Japanese site, odds are you'll have to take your chances finding her in stores. According to Target's internal system, the country-wide shipment date is 1/30, which lines up with the rumor of a 2/1 release. That's a Friday and Sunday respectively, so plan your day accordingly if you want to rush into the store at opening and see if they have any in stock. Zdate is when we get shipments [reddit] |
| Physical copies of Dying Light have been delayed outside the US Posted: 19 Jan 2015 03:30 AM PST If you're not in the US, you may have to wait a bit to get your hands on a physical copy of Dying Light. Over on the official Facebook page, it was revealed that due to physical production issue, discs will not be ready on time for launch. You can still pick the game up digitally on its global launch date of January 27, but the physical delay window hasn't been confirmed yet. More info will be posted on the Facebook hub when it becomes available. Dying Light [Facebook] |
| Final Fantasy XIV 2.5 patch notes detail everything coming Tuesday Posted: 19 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST Square Enix has released the preliminary patch notes for Final Fantasy XIV update 2.5, set to arrive this Tuesday, and as always, it's a massive list. The biggest additions include an all-new storyline, a new Hildibrand questline, Wandererer's Palace (hard), Amdapor Keep (hard), Keeper of the Lake, an Odin encounter, another fight with Gilgamesh, and the 24-man raid. There's also roughly 100 more quality of life additions, like housing options, a better queuing system, and the best addition of all -- "the Most Gentlemanly" pose. I'm amazed at how vigilant Square Enix is at making improvements this far down the road. While I typically provide full reviews for these expansion-like patches, I'll be covering this one over the course of a few months, since the full 2.5 update is coming in bits and pieces leading into the expansion. | Review: Resident Evil HD Remaster Posted: 19 Jan 2015 02:01 AM PST Playing the original Resident Evil was an experience. The mansion, the campiness, the mystery of it all -- before walkthroughs were easily accessible from all corners of the internet, getting lost was practically a given, and it was a blast. Secrets were traded between us gamers, telling of hidden rooms and items, and most of them was accurate. The Spencer Mansion was a veritable treasure, and that couldn't have been more true for the subsequent GameCube remake, and now, the recent HD edition. |
| Review: Saints Row IV: Gat out of Hell Posted: 19 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST There’s something about a series that doesn’t feel the need to make a ton of social commentary, or really feel grounded in reality. The Saints Row series is like if the worlds of The Naked Gun and Grand Theft Auto merged, and the result is a unique blend of zany comedy, copious cursing, and ultraviolence. Saints Row: The Third is one of my favorite games of all time. The series hit its peak there, with an almost perfect balance of the real, the absurd, and the fantastical. Saints Row IV was still a blast, but I felt it lacked the magic of its predecessor. So it’s understandable that I was therefore jaded by the time Saints Row: Gat out of Hell came down the pipe to review. But wherever you are and wherever you go, there’s always gonna be some light. With that said, plenty of it shines through in this standalone expansion. |
| Amplitude delayed from March until 'summer' Posted: 19 Jan 2015 12:52 AM PST I hope you weren't too excited for a March release date for the upcoming Amplitude reboot, as Harmonix has announced that it has been delayed until "summer" for quality concerns. The developer says that they don't want to cut corners, and want to deliver the best experience possible, so a delay is needed. Sounds good! I completely forgot that Amplitude was only being released on the PS3 and PS4, since most Kickstarter projects are developed for pretty much every platform under the sun. Of course this was explained by Harmonix itself, noting that, "Amplitude and FreQuency were originally funded and published by Sony for the PlayStation 2. Since Sony owns these properties, sequels are exclusive to the PlayStation platforms (PS3, PS4 and potentially PS Vita), as is the case for all other Sony-owned properties that we know of." | Sonic Boom Wii U gets a massive 1GB mystery patch Posted: 19 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was a messy game, and it's taken far too long to patch it. After weeks of waiting though European fans have finally gotten a fix of sorts (it's not out yet in the US), but the problem is Sega hasn't disclosed what's actually in it. Thankfully, fans have gotten to the bottom of it through a crowdsourcing effort of sorts. Most notably, the Knuckles infinite jump has been fixed, and invisible barriers have been put up to prevent extra glitches. There's also an improved framerate, a better navigation system, and lighting and shadow improvements. It's nice that the patch exists, but it's a huge shame that it took this long. Big Red Button doesn't have the same resources that some AAA studios do, but the lack of communication on this entire issue is debatably a bigger problem. | Xbox Live Gold free month rolling out for Master Chief Collection owners Posted: 18 Jan 2015 11:00 PM PST As an apology for some of the issues with the Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Microsoft announced that it was gifting players a free month of Xbox Live. That free month is happening right now, and a message should be in your Live inbox now indicating that it has been applied. To earn it, all you had to do is play the game before December 19, 2014. In addition to this bonus, you'll also get a free ODST add-on, as well as a free remastered Halo 2 map later this year. |
