Alt. control exhibition at GDC features Butt Sniffin Pugs

Posted: 17 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST

A lot of people assume that "weird indie games" all want to use "interactive poetry" to speak to "the human condition" by using "experimental gameplay techniques" to do things like "evoke the emotional experience of repeatedly using air quotes for no reason" because "that's more real than anything you'll ever see in a big budget AAA title." The truth is, today's more boldly avant-garde indie games are usually in the minority. They're just the ones that end up getting the most attention.

Take Butt Sniffin Pugs for instance, one of the games to be featured at GDC 2015's ctrl.alt.GDC exhibit. It's been out in the public for a while, but few have taken notice of it yet. I'll be darned if I know why. This simple little game utilizes a large trackball controller to allow you to manipulate your in-game pug with the same kinds of motions that a flesh and blood pug may perform in real life. Using these controls, your aim is to interact with various aspects of an small park, but there's a hitch. With only three action buttons at your disposal, you'll have to sniff a fellow pug's posterior in order to gain alternate abilities. Like leading a small group of pigeons in a group-pooping exercise.

The game has a long way to go before it's more than just a lackadaisical small dog simulator, but the interface alone instills a lot of potential. Games about being real animals have really come into their own in recent years. It will be interesting to see if Butt Sniffin Pugs grows to meet the standards of all the Octodad and Catlateral Damage fans out there.

Game-within-a-game hinted at for Splatoon

Posted: 17 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST

Splatoon is shaping up to be Nintendo's most bold and explosive new intellectual properties in recent memory. Nintendo is often accused of never publishing new I.P., though these accusations are often coming from folks who only take notice of Nintendo when they're talking about Mario or Zelda. A lot of people see titles like Sin and Punishment, Pushmo, The Wonderful 101, Rhythm Heaven, or Xenoblade and either don't read as being "Nintendo games" to them, or don't notice them at all.

From the looks of it, Splatoon may be able to break that curse. The game has steadily picked up traction in the collective awareness of Wii U owners since its debut at E3, giving it a much better shot at being one of the console's next big hits. I chalk that up to the fact that it follows a lot of conventions that many associate with the Nintendo brand (colorful cartoon-ish characters, strange transformations, simple-but-versatile "fun first" gameplay hooks) while still offering enough fresh ideas to be eye catching.

One of those fresh ideas may be 2D arcade game that you access from inside the game itself. Spotted by this NeoGAF contributor, the little retro shooter seen in this Splatoon single player trailer is also clearly displayed on an arcade cabinet in the hub world shown in the latest Nintendo Direct footage. No word yet on if it will be playable, but we'll reach out to Nintendo about it after the weekend for comment.

Former OneUps member and Dtoid chief covers Persona 4 tune

Posted: 17 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST

Dale North is one of the best singers in the world. The fact that Dtoid was lucky enough to have him as a writer, and later, as an Editor-in-Chief for so long is delightfully puzzling. It's like if you came home one day to find that Aimee Mann was your new housekeeper.

Though he's moved on from Dtoid, Dale will never move on from videogames, or from music. This new "thank you" video shows that Dale hasn't lost his dulcet tones or his love of JRPGs. The art by Crystal White is equally loving, though the passion there is directed more squarely on Dale, which is as it should be.

Now to just talk him into singing on Dtoid's next Holiday album...

Obscure Video Games: Nanashi no Game

Posted: 17 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST

[Update: Sorry for the confusion everyone! As you said in the comments, the link below is actually for the sequel to Nanashi no Game and not for the original. Thanks for the correction!]

Nanashi no Game (The Nameless Game) is a trip back in time to when Japanese horror was a huge phenomenon around the world. Movies like The Ring and Ju-on: The Grudge were so popular that we even saw big-budget American remakes of them. A few games such as Siren and the Fatal Frame series really captured the aesthetic of these movies, but what makes this 2008 Nintendo DS title from Square Enix so unique and intriguing is the game within the game.

Things start in the real world with you spontaneously receiving a free game download on your handheld "TS" device. It's a top-down adventure resembling a town area from an NES RPG. You walk around, talk to everyone, and eventually are sent back to real life. Seems harmless enough. But then you discover that everyone else who's received this game has met a gruesome fate.

In real life, you learn all about the game's developer and his family, exploring haunted places and dodging angry ghosts. In the cursed 8-bit game, you uncover more details of the family's tragedy, as well as clues that may help you to survive in "the real world." It's this back-and-forth between the game and the game-within-the-game that makes Nanashi no Game so compelling.

Weekend Deals: GTA V, Majora's Mask, Resident Evil, Oh My

Posted: 17 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST

Next month's The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D, March's Grand Theft Auto V for the PC, and next Tuesday's Resident Evil HD Remaster all receive some cash discount this weekend. There's a common theme between these three games - take a wild guess.

If re-releases with prettier graphics aren't your thing, there are also deals on other titles such as Shin Megami Tensei IV for $16, or the Saints Row Ultimate Franchise Pack for $11.

Further down the list, you'll find some hardware deals, including PS4 and Wii U consoles at decent discounts ($30 and $20, respectively). They're nothing wild, but are still good deals when you factor in the additional bonuses.

Game deals brought to you by Dealzon. FYI: Sales from certain retailers help support Destructoid.
