| Campy old Zelda CD-i games imagined as Hyrule Warriors DLC Posted: 15 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon are two ill-fated Philips CD-i games that would be best left forgotten if they weren't such trainwrecks. Their legacy of unintentional hilarity endures through YouTube, gifs, and now this rather well-done Hyrule Warriors mock-up. I wouldn't have expected anyone to put this much effort into creating a phony The Faces of Evil / Wand of Gamelon DLC pack for the game, or for such a thing to look appealing, but there it is. And while we're talking made-up Hyrule Warriors stuff, has anyone done a proper Hyrule Warios Photoshop? My fingers have been hellbent on typing that instead of the real title as of late. | H1Z1 is Steam's top seller despite also not working right now Posted: 15 Jan 2015 11:30 AM PST H1Z1, Sony Online Entertainment's bizarrely-named version of DayZ, is out on Steam today in Early Access. Not just out; it's atop the "top sellers" list on the Steam store, above freshly discounted, free-to-play-for-the-weekend Saint's Row and Civilization: Beyond Earth. It is also currently unplayable. And not just because it's kind of broke, like when Brett played it last year (or because it's kind of janky, like when I played it later last year). Rather, it is more literally unplayable as players are reportedly having issues connecting to the login server (game error G99). One such player is Destructoid.com Features Editor Steven Hansen, who has been trying to log on for over an hour now to stream the game. "It's a bit disappointing that new games drop, people pony up their $20 or sometimes $60 to be there minute one, and the dang thing doesn't work," Hansen said. To be fair, this is an Early Access game, the express purpose of which is to get games balanced and working on time for their official release. It's not like they didn't test it beforehand. This is the trial period. A long one. I'm more surprised it cracked the Steam top-sellers, showing people haven't lost interest in open world zombie survival sims. "Maybe I'll finally buy The Long Dark," Hansen added. |
Control a three-headed hydra with your friends in Crawl Posted: 15 Jan 2015 10:30 AM PST Crawl, the multiplayer dungeon crawler from Powerhoof where you control the monsters and try to kill you friends, just released a new update on Steam today. In addition to a big list of bug fixes and stat balancing, the Plague Mushroom update introduces a ton of new content.

| Twitch deems these 500+ songs okay for streaming Posted: 15 Jan 2015 09:30 AM PST Last year, Twitch rolled out an audio-recognition system that scans archived broadcasts for copyrighted music and mutes the offending segments. Now, the game-streaming site is offering broadcasters a library of 500+ songs (with more to come) that have been pre-cleared for use on Twitch and won't be flagged by The Man. That's one way to sidestep copyright concerns. The song library is built from "established and burgeoning labels, including Mad Decent, Dim Mak, Spinnin' Records, OWSLA, Monstercat, Fool's Gold, and many more." Ohh, okay. (Who?) The company has also gone back on its "gaming-only" stance, if only a bit, by introducing a Music category intended for "creating, performing, and presenting original music." Expect radio shows, live performances, and whatever Fred Durst is up to lately. "We view music as an expansion, but gaming will always be our core focus," Twitch said in a blog post. | Hah, wow: Microsoft drops Xbox One back to $349 Posted: 15 Jan 2015 09:15 AM PST Microsoft sold the Xbox One for $349.99 during the holiday season, which worked out well for sales. The system became "the best-selling console in the U.S. in November and December," according to the company. But that wasn't a permanent price reduction and, as expected, Microsoft started charging the usual rate, $399.99, again as of January 3, 2015. Here we are, not even two weeks later, and Microsoft says it's reintroducing that $50 discount as a "new promotion" in the U.S. on January 16. Someone, somewhere just got screwed over. Just make the damn price permanent already. Xbox One Closes a Record-Breaking Holiday and Looks Ahead to 2015 [Xbox] |
Porn Wars! SugarDVD says Pornhub's wrong, PS4's still the big daddy Posted: 15 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST The console wars are raging, and they're raging hard. As with any struggle for supremacy, there are key battles and then there are the less meaningful fights. I think we can all agree that the likes of "best exclusives" and "biggest install base" take a backseat to the most important clash: hand-to-gland combat. Last week, Pornhub broke down the ways in which Xbox One grew and blew up in 2014, taking the coveted award for console most used to watch adult entertainment. That's not the final word, though, as other sites are reporting the exact opposite. SugarDVD, the self-proclaimed "Netflix of porn," says that Sony's console is definitely still large and in charge. According to its metrics, PS4 users watched 2.6 times more porn than Xbox One owners. Maybe more interesting than that, peak hours for watching on PS4 was between 6-7pm -- right around dinner time. Of course, none of this is definitive at all, given that these are just numbers from individual outlets, of which there are many. And, it's important to note that SugarDVD is a paid service while Pornhub is free. If anything, it tells us that both sides of the console war are using their systems for more than just gaming.
I unboxed the New 3DS XL and tickled its sensitive nub Posted: 15 Jan 2015 08:45 AM PST After a Nintendo press event yesterday, I was sent home with a review unit of the New Nintendo 3DS XL. I figured it would be a good idea to record my opening of it so that I could share my trademarked cynical indignation with you all. So, sorry about that. But, you get to see what thing looks like right out of the box! Shiny toys! It's a pretty standard package, with the glaring exception of the lack of an AC adapter. Nintendo gave IGN the predictable company line, "Rather than raise cost of New Nintendo 3DS XL by charging consumers for a component they may already own, we are giving them the option to only buy if they need an AC adapter." Cool. Ya know, except that this device is an upgrade of an existing device, and people might want to sell their obsolete model. Not to mention, people who don't already own a compatible power plug will be praying there will be one in stock when they go to buy the New 3DS XL, and will probably get stuck with a shitty third-party knock-off.
Games aren't cheap: It cost $1.4 million to make Monument Valley and its DLC Posted: 15 Jan 2015 08:30 AM PST With so much crap out there, it's pleasant to see the mobile-games marketplace value quality. Ustwo Games has released a bunch of data for its delectable iOS and Android puzzler Monument Valley, including sales and revenue figures and development costs. Also, importantly, the number of Street Fighter matches the studio played during production ("over 15,800"). It took the team 55 weeks and $852,000 to make the base game, and 29 weeks and $549,000 to craft the Forgotten Shores DLC. Monument Valley's highest one-day revenue, $145,530, happened on its April 3, 2014 launch. The title has gone on to generate $5,858,625 in revenue. Enough money to continue making games, in other words. Find the full infographic below. ustwogames [Twitter]
It's getting hot in here! Top 10 fire levels Posted: 15 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST The holidays may be over, but the snow keeps falling and the temperatures are still way too cold for comfort. So what better way to warm up during these cold winter months than taking a stroll through some of your favorite fire levels? These places will heat you right up! What makes a good fire level? Pools of lava, volcanoes, flames licking at your heels... fire levels are imminently dangerous and tricky to navigate. They're often designated as the final area of a game, or at least near the end of the game, due to how dangerous they can be. Can you take the heat?
Play Civilization: Beyond Earth, Saints Row IV for free on Steam Posted: 15 Jan 2015 07:45 AM PST Saint's Row IV and Civilization: Beyond Earth are both free to play on Steam this weekend. Both are good to go until Sunday, 1PM PST. Try 'em. If you like 'em, both are on sale over the weekend, too. $5 for Saint's Row IV (just ahead of the standalone Gat out of Hell expansion), $30 for Beyond Earth. Both are good weekend games. Saint's Row because you can just romp around in the sandbox for a bit, Beyond Earth because it won't be able to suck hundreds of hours from you (unless you end up buying it).
Seasons after Fall is fiendishly cute, coming in 2016 Posted: 15 Jan 2015 07:30 AM PST Swing Swing Submarine, the talented studio behind well-received puzzlers such as Blocks That Matter and Tetrobot and Co., has been hard at work on its latest project, Seasons after Fall. The exquisite-looking fairytale platformer is scheduled to arrive on consoles and PC sometime in 2016. In Seasons, you'll take on the role of a wild fox with mystical powers that allow you to "manipulate the life of the forest through dynamically changing the seasons." Platforming elements will "move or expand based on which season you switch to," so for example, you can freeze a progress-blocking waterfall by summoning Winter, or "call for Spring to make plants and flowers bloom, guiding you to previously inaccessible zones." I first became aware of the delightful title when I came across Philippa Warr's first-hand account of the game last December. In it, the developers discuss its intended difficulty level, or intentional lack thereof by saying, "We want [the] game to feel generous," adding that they "don't want the platforming to be a challenge." In essence, I get the feeling that Seasons is meant to be a relaxing, exploration-based title, which is fine by me. From time to time, that's precisely what I need.
Beautiful survival-sim The Long Dark moves 250,000 copies in Early Access Posted: 15 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST Dang, I need this game. Early Access continues to be a boon for open-world survival simulators, even unwavering artsy ones. It's a ways from DayZ's two million (a year ago) or Rust's half a million in a month, but still impressive that after four months of availability on Early Access, The Long Dark has coaxed 258,251 paying players. Good on 'em. And good on the 25% of players who have managed to survive five days. The next update is doubling the size of the sandbox (the story mode comes when it hits a full release). "Our goal with The Long Dark was to create a very different type of experience – an artistic survival game – and we were prepared for the game to be quite niche as a result," creative director Raphael Van Lierop said in a press release. "Thinking that a quarter of a million people have embraced our vision, even in this early state – something we've put forward without compromise – is extremely rewarding. And we’re just getting started."
WWE Immortals looks like Mortal Kombat/Injustice meets wrestling Posted: 15 Jan 2015 06:45 AM PST I'm not into wrestling but, conceptually, I'm feeling WWE Immortals. It's a fighting game from Mortal Kombat studio NetherRealm and Phosphor Games that imagines real-world wrestlers in a fantastical alternate universe. Think Injustice: Gods Among Us, but with WWE personalities. That all sounds cool until reality hits: WWE Immortals is a free-to-play game for iPhone, iPad, and Android, because of course it is. It'll make Warner Bros. a lot of money, I'm sure of it, but think what this might have been as a bigger-budget, fully-realized console game.
Pillars of Eternity set to release on March 26 Posted: 15 Jan 2015 06:30 AM PST Obsidian Entertainment's massively successful crowdfunded role-playing game Pillars of Eternity has been given a worldwide release date of March 26. Weighing in at around $4.5 million raised in backer pledges and pre-purchases through Obsidian's website, I think it's a pretty safe bet that fans of the old-school, party-based cRPG genre are looking forward to this one. For those interested in getting a look at a selection of new game content, a live stream is scheduled for today hosted by Josh Sawyer, the game's project director, who will "take viewers on a journey through the world of Pillars of Eternity to show what has been accomplished since the release of the backer beta." I'm curious to see how things have turned out since then. In my time with the backer beta, I wasn't won over with what was on display. Given that it was an early build, I'm not going to be overly critical, but I am hopeful that what we see today is a marked improvement. The live stream is set to air today at 1:00PM Pacific on Twitch.
Nintendo: New 3DS XL doesn't include AC adapter to cut costs Posted: 15 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST Yesterday, Nintendo announced the New 3DS XL for North America. It's coming out February 13 for $200. Dampening this excitement was word that Nintendo has no plans to release the smaller size New 3DS in North America. That and the Majora's Mask 3DS selling out in 15 minutes, before the West Coast was awake, and then selling out quickly again in the afternoon. Hope we helped some of yous get in on the latter. Perhaps looked over in the uproar is that the New 3DS XL does not include an AC adapter in North America or Europe. If you don't already have a DSi or 3DS charger, you'll have to buy one from Nintendo for $10 (or risk a third party blowing out your system or voiding your warranty). A similar situation occurred with the original 3DS XL, with Japan and Europe cutting the adapter to cut costs. Nintendo issued a statement to Polygon stating, "Rather than raise cost of New Nintendo 3DS XL by charging consumers for a component they may already own, we are giving them the option to only buy if they need an AC adapter." So they axed the charger to sneak one penny under $200. $199.99 does look cheaper, doesn't it? New Nintendo 3DS XL doesn't include an AC adapter, and you should get the official one [Polygon]
Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty gets PC, Xbox One, PS3 release dates Posted: 15 Jan 2015 05:45 AM PST Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, the remake of the 1997 PS1 platformer Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, hit PS4 last July. Now, it finally has a release date for some of its other planned platforms. It is coming to PC, Mac, and Linux through Steam on February 24. It's expected on PS3 and Xbox One soon after, in early March. No word on the Vita or Wii U versions. It is cross-buy and cross-save between the existing PS4 version and the soon-to-be-released PS3 version, as well as the hopefully-eventually-released Vita version. I forgot to pick up New 'n' Tasty, which Chris vouched for in his review. Kind of would like it on Vita, though. Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty [Just Add Water]
Monster Hunter-alike Toukiden: Kiwami hits PS4, Vita in March Posted: 15 Jan 2015 05:30 AM PST Toukiden: Kiwami is coming to Vita and PS4 on March 31 in North America. It will be available digitally and at retail. Kiwami includes, "both the original Toukiden: The Age of Demons story and a brand new story of roughly the same size, following the original." Pretty good way to release something, I think. Would like to see more of this to help appeal to new players. Plus, for owners of the original, all Toukiden: The Age of Demons save data carries over. There are also new weapons, new characters, and new mission types, all detailed on the PlayStation Blog. Even if you're not into big monster action games, do check out the trailer from the always excellent Studio 4°C, whose work you might remember from Catherine, or a lot of other good animated films. Everyone needs to watch Genius Party now.
[Extremely Homer voice] The Simpsons are going to Minecraft! Posted: 15 Jan 2015 05:15 AM PST Sure, you could make eye contact with these official Minecraft renditions of the Simpsons, but I wouldn't recommend it. They're joining 19 other Springfield residents in a $1.99 DLC pack toward the end of February on Xbox One and Xbox 360, with other platforms to follow. Reached for comment, Minecraft owner Microsoft had this to say:
Rockman Dystopia gets some sweet, sweet samples Posted: 15 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST e-Capcom has put up the latest samples for the upcoming album Rockman Dystopia, which is basically an electronic take on the Mega Man X series. If you love the X games and EDM, you'll want to check this out, as short as the tastes may be. You'll find remixed tracks from stages like Boomer Kuwanger, Armored Armadillo, Cyber Peacock, and even an ice stage medley called "You'd Better Be Nippy." Who doesn't love the soothing sounds of an ice level? You can also check out the happier sounding Rockman Utopia here. Rockman Dystopia [e-Capcom]
Free Dark Souls II patch to bring content parity with PS4, Xbox One versions Posted: 15 Jan 2015 04:30 AM PST Dark Souls II is coming to PS4 and Xbox One on April 7 as Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin. The re-release, which collects all three DLC packs and makes other improvements, is also coming to PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, but only PC, PS4, and Xbox One will see visual improvements. If you already own Dark Souls II (PC, PS3, 360) and its DLC. there's a free patch coming (detailed in full here) that will make your game equivalent, except in prettiness, to the Scholar of the First Sin version. It includes the addition of a new character, the titular Scholar of the First Sin. In Soulsian fashion, little else is known. Oh, and the patch cuts load times on PS3. Sweet. The free update will be available on February 5, bringing the new story elements, additional item description text, and more two months before the repackaged release. Patch notes [Bandai Namco]
Posted: 15 Jan 2015 04:00 AM PST The first Legend of Grimrock was damn near perfect. Coming seemingly out of nowhere, it put a fresh new face on the dungeon-crawling genre. It was a game that didn't forget its roots yet also didn't forget that we live in a different time. It's no surprise, then, that the sequel is absolutely stunning.
Uncharted 4 won't be 60fps if it 'impact[s] the player's experience' Posted: 15 Jan 2015 03:45 AM PST Uncharted 4 director Bruce Straley said in the newest issue of Edge that Naughty Dog wouldn't push the game to 60fps if it adversely affects "the player's experience." Last month's demo, which has me positively optimistic for the sequel, was capped at 30fps. "We're actually above 30," Straley explained, "but we locked it [for the demo]. We're going to do whatever it takes to make the game we want to make. If it means we could go for 60 but lose something that would really impact the player's experience, then it's our choice as developers to say, 'Well, we're going to go for the experience over the 60 frames.'" The Last of Us: Remastered ran at 1080p/60fps, while all three PS3 Uncharted games ran at 30fps. Naughty Dog won't push Uncharted 4 to 60fps if it compromises player experience [Videogamer]
Nintendo Download: 3D After Burner II Posted: 15 Jan 2015 03:30 AM PST On the Wii U, we have Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight on the Virtual Console. Nintendo calls this an "NES classic," but I beg to differ. Also on the Wii U eShop, there's Electroic Super Joy: Groove City, Family Tennis SP, and uWordsmith. For the 3DS, we have 3D After Burner II highlighting the week, in addition to Lufia: The Legend Returns, Best of Mahjong, Soccer Up Online, Space Life Danger Panic!, Quell Momento, and WRC Official Game of the FIA World Rally Championship. Also, sales! The throwback sale is happening now, and a bunch of indies are also discounted, as well as a selection of LEGO games like Batman 3, The LEGO Movie, and The Hobbit.
Neverwinter Xbox One Closed Beta starts in February, sign up now! Posted: 15 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST If you've got an Xbox One and have been hankering to play the Dungeons and Dragons MMO Neverwinter on a console, you might want to go ahead and register for the Xbox One closed beta. Registration begins today and the beta will run from February 5 - 8. There's currently no word as to whether the beta will be an Xbox Live Gold perk, but the full game will be free-to-play for Gold members when it launches. Neverwinter on Xbox will have "optimized controls," which likely means they've found a way to fit the game's combat system on a controller. As somebody who's never played a second of this game, I went to a trusted source: my friend Desi, who's played "over 100" hours of Neverwinter. According to her, there's a lot of grinding involved if you don't feel like shelling out the big bucks. "It kind of is free to play, but you need to have loads of money if you want to cheat your way through," she told me over Facebook in an 'interview.' "It's very hierarchical, considering that the top players have the best (real money bought) equipment and companions." Just going to throw this out there, if you need to subscribe to a paying service to play this MMO and it relies heavily on microtransactions, maybe "free-to-play" isn't the right term? The Xbox One version of Neverwinter will launch sometime in Early 2015, along with just about everything else.
Nosgoth, that Legacy of Kain arena game, hits open beta this month Posted: 15 Jan 2015 02:30 AM PST During my time with Nosgoth I found it to be a middling Legacy of Kain game, but a decent arena romp. More gamers are going to get the chance to check it out starting January 21, since that's when the open beta starts. In case you weren't aware the game is free-to-play, and focuses on the all-popular asymmetric style of gameplay, which pits vampires against humans. It makes for some fun confrontations, especially when you're on the former side.
Target to close all 133 stores in Canada, where the Rosalina amiibo is exclusive Posted: 15 Jan 2015 01:50 AM PST Things haven't been looking good for Nintendo and its retailer-exclusive amiibo initiative. Toys"R"Us has bungled pre-orders so many times it's hard to tell if anyone will actually get their Lucario amiibo at this point. Best Buy didn't open pre-orders for its exclusive until weeks after the announcement. Target's Rosalina pre-order process has been completely fucked, especially in Canada, where residents weren't even allowed to pre-order. Now, Target has announced it's closing all 133 of its Canadian stores because it will be impossible to reach profitability. A concrete closing date hasn't been set, but employees will be given 16 weeks severance at a minimum -- I'm glad they got something. What does this mean for the Rosalina amiibo? It's likely the store will halt, or at the very least, be light on shipments. If you're Canadian and were hoping to rush into Target to get your hands on one, you really should think about importing it from an international Amazon venue or a Japanese import site. A Nintendo representative recently stated in a Reddit AMA that "retailer exclusives will be around as long as stores put the money up for them." At this point, I don't blame anyone for completely giving up on these toys. Target to close all 133 stores in Canada [Kare 11]
Cooperative board game Pandemic Legacy set to release October 8 Posted: 15 Jan 2015 01:30 AM PST Pandemic has served as a primer to cooperative board games for many who have recently taken up the hobby. Last year Z-Man Games announced that Pandemic designer Matt Leacock and Risk Legacy designer Rob Daviau would be teaming up to create Pandemic Legacy. Now we know exactly when to expect it: October 8, 2015. Legacy mechanics shake up a lot of what people know about tabletop games. Unlike traditional board games, games with legacy elements change from play session to play session. Decisions are made in one session that can affect all future games played on that board. Components are destroyed and discarded. New rules show up over time. It worked wonderfully with the competitive nature of Risk, so it will be exciting to see how it applies to a cooperative game like Pandemic. One new piece of information that the promotional image holds is "Season 1," which implies that this is only the first of several versions of Pandemic Legacy. Zombicide is another board game that features seasons, where new characters and scenarios are introduced over time. It is possible that Pandemic Legacy will not be "over" after the end of one in-game year, but will continue on afterward. Z-Man Games [Twitter]
Witcher 3: Wild Hunt recap explains what the hell a witcher is Posted: 15 Jan 2015 01:00 AM PST With the May 19 release date, everything's sort of filler from here on out for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, be it eye-boring crows or a straight half hour of gameplay. This animated video offers a bit of background on magic in the world and what a "witcher" is aside from a word we are all okay with because we've seen it for a few years now, even if we haven't played the game. I've yet to crack into the first two Witchers (the second is now free with Games of Gold), but I'm terribly excited for The Witcher 3's open world. I'm okay with picking up lore---or not--as I go along. I just want to chase monsters and fight things.
Resident Evil: Revelations 2 delayed about a week Posted: 15 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST No need for alarm. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is still coming out in Fe-Barry (and, yes, Barry Burton is still in it). The the first episode ($6 each or $25 for a complete pass) of Revelations 2 was planned for February 17 release. Now, it is coming out on February 25. The delay is due to, "additional polishing work and gameplay optimisation." Subsequent episodes are now slated for release on March 4, 11, and 18. The fully pieced together retail release ($40) is now landing ten days later than originally planned, March 20.
Review: Assassin's Creed Unity: Dead Kings Posted: 14 Jan 2015 11:00 PM PST If our time spent wandering the Parisian streets in Assassin's Creed Unity has taught us anything, it's that Arno Dorian is a self-serving man. Almost all of his actions, whether aligned with the cause of the Brotherhood or not, weren't altruistic, but rather, efforts for personal gain. With his attention wholly divided between personal vendettas and the apple of his eye, Arno was the least sympathetic model for role-playing Assassins since, well, last year when Edward Kenway held that mantle. Given his affinity for all things Arno, it should come as no surprise that the Dead Kings add-on extrapolates upon that theme heavily. While Ubisoft dialed up the protagonist's selfish pretense, it took pause with the gameplay and varied it up moreso than the base game. That is, as much as can be expected with the tried-and-tested Assassin's Creed formula.
Hotline Miami 2 refused classification in Australia (Update) Posted: 14 Jan 2015 08:00 PM PST Hotline Miami 2 has been refused classification in Australia, primarily due to a rape scene. Before we dig into the meat of the news, be warned this article contains a pretty graphic description of rape. With that out the way, yes, Hotline Miami 2 has been refused classification in Australia, which in essence means it will not receive a physical release as the vast majority of retailers in the country will refuse to carry it. Think about this like the AO rating Manhunt 2 originally received in North America . Also, the three major console manufacturers will not sell digital copies of a game that has been refused classification. To be clear, this would not stop developer Devolver Digital from selling the game online. This isn't censorship of Hotline Miami 2, as there are still avenues where Devolver could choose to sell it in its current form to Australian consumers, but it's a pretty strong bet it will still force the developers to change the game. It's not censorship, but will probably have the same effect if the developers want the game to sell. Right, let's dig into the classification report and its description of the scene in question:
