Congrats on the Academy Award, SpeedTree

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 02:00 PM PST

Do you ever take a moment to stop and admire the scenery? Too often are we focused on mindlessly pushing forward to the next objective to notice the little details. Foliage, man. Take it in.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is awarding a Technical Achievement Award to vegetation software SpeedTree. It's been around for over a decade and has been prominently featured in videogames (The Evil Within, Shrek The Third: The Game) and movies.

Developers Michael Sechrest, Chris King, and Greg Croft from SpeedTree maker IDV will receive their award during the Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation in Beverly Hills, CA on February 7, ahead of the Oscars on February 22. But enough talk -- let's look at some tree porn.

Big names dominate Writers Guild Award nominations

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 01:00 PM PST

Anyone that's of the belief that mainstream videogames are often devoid of great writing will need to look somewhere other than the Writers Guild of America for vindication. The organization's nominees for Outstanding Achievement in Writing for Videogames have been revealed, and they're all from quite well-known titles.

Ubisoft's flagship franchise leads the way with two nominations, as Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry, and Assassin's Creed Unity both got nods. Creative Assembly's Alien: Isolation and Naughty Dog's The Last of Us: Left Behind round out the list of nominees.

Naughty Dog's no stranger to the award, as The Last of Us was the 2014 winner. Before that, it took home the prize in 2012 for Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. When the 2015 award is presented on February 14, we'll see if the studio can continue its trend of bringing home hardware.

This is the year I finally import Pro Yakyuu Spirits

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST

MLB The Show is the only baseball game in town these days. Well, if you don't count things like Super Mega Baseball, which I don't. Not really. Not enough Yasiel Puig. Or something.

It's the only Major League Baseball game around nowadays, at least. But there are other leagues around the world, like Nippon Professional Baseball (or Puro Yakyuu), the highest level of professional baseball in Japan and the world's most competitive league outside MLB.

Much like The Show, NPB has its own annualized videogame franchise, Konami's Pro Yakyuu Spirits. This year's version, predictably christened Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2015, has just been announced for a spring release on PlayStation 3 and Vita, per the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu.

The news reminds me of something that's become something of an annual tradition, one where I tell myself I'm going to import the new Pro Yakyuu Spirits and see my great loves (baseball, games, and Japanese culture) all collide in the most beautiful of ways.

This year, though. This seems like the year to finally, actually do it. For real this time. Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2015 will be the first game in the series to utilize 3D scans of the players and coaches, ensuring these folks I'm vaguely familiar with at best will be unprecedentedly realistic. That seems kinda neat. Yeah. This is the year. It's finally time to take the plunge.

Buying a new PS4? If so, you're gonna get The Last of Us too

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 11:30 AM PST

Sony's sweetening the pot a bit for any prospective PlayStation 4 buyers. Beginning in the coming days, all PS4s will come bundled with a code to download a copy of The Last of Us: Remastered.

The inclusion of Naughty Dog's masterpiece comes at no additional cost. The package will still retail for $399.99 -- the customary amount of the 500GB standalone PS4. Sony's announcement didn't promote the new bundle as some sort of special deal, so this appears to be the new standard for PS4s; that is, at least for the foreseeable future.

Destructoid saves the world: Come watch me play XCOM

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 11:05 AM PST

I've not played anything more than turn-based strategy games in recent months, years. Massive Chalice. Invisible, Inc. Fire Emblem: Awakening. XCOM: Enemy Unknown. I started an Enemy Within playthrough one evening last year and suddenly it was 4am. "Not again," I thought, unwilling to lose a few dozen more hours to the game.

My resolve has lasted months now, though Invisible, Inc. and Massive Chalice were my nicotine gum and I dropped as many hours in them as I did sucking on smokes...anyways, whatever, the point is that I'm going to play XCOM again, don't judge me.

Welcome to Destructoid Saves the World.

I'm going to start up a normal, Iron Man (no save scumming) game of XCOM (with Enemy Within expansion) and see if I can save the world with a squad full of those most suited for the job, people who write about videogames because they had one too many felonies to join the military.

Build castles and blow them up with a trebuchet in Medieval Engineers

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 10:30 AM PST

Keen Software has built a million-person-strong audience for Space Engineers, but I've stayed away from the work-in-progress construction sandbox game so far. Steam Early Access often has that effect on me. The studio's next project, Medieval Engineers, will tap into the same desire to build and break cool stuff, but in a setting that seems quaint by comparison. Quaint can be good.

Inspired by real-world medieval technology, the game "strives to follow the laws of physics and history and doesn't use any technologies that were not available in the 5th to 15th centuries."

Players can build cities, castles, and mechanical devices -- and, what's this? -- "perform landscaping and underground mining," too. Don't underestimate the importance of curb appeal.

"We didn't want to only keep creating space games," says founder and CEO Marek Rosa. "Instead we wanted to have a game where players can interact with life and nature. By creating a second engineering game, we are also leveraging our existing technology and experience."

When Medieval Engineers arrives on Steam Early Access, it'll launch with Creative Mode and an early prototype of Survival Mode. Like Space Engineers, I think I'll wait until this is fully cooked.

Xbox gets Call of Duty's star-studded Exo Zombies DLC first on January 27

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 09:30 AM PST

Zombies again. It's what people know, I guess. Comforting, familiar zombies.

With Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare's first DLC pack, Havoc ($15 standalone, or included in the $50 season pass), the undead will don exoskeletons to stand out from past games and yeah, they know how to boost-jump. That's something. Also something is the celebrity cast, which consists of John Malkovich, Rose McGowan, Jon Bernthal, and "the incredible Bill Paxton."

Besides Exo Zombies, Havoc includes four multiplayer maps -- "Core," "Urban," "Sideshow," and "Drift" -- as well as the AE4 directed energy assault rifle and the AE4 Widowmaker custom variant.

It's coming to Xbox One and Xbox 360 on January 27, "with other platforms to follow."

Alien: Isolation's new mode asks you to sacrifice success for security

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST

Creative Assembly's Alien: Isolation is a constant struggle for survival, and maybe more precisely, a neverending search for those few fleeting moments when you feel safe, even if you know danger's probably mere seconds away. The highly regarded Survivor mode is a concentrated version of that in the sense that thrills come at a rapid-fire pace, except the concept of safety's exchanged for a high score.

The newest Alien add-on kind of melds those two ideas together. In Safe Haven, Salvage Mode is introduced in which the player is tasked with competing ten different challenges. These take place in a bigger playspace than other Survivor maps, and include not only the Xenomorph, but synthetics and humans as enemies. Along the way, points can be traded in for a save slot, essentially acting as a safe-guard against failure and ensuring that final score and leaderboard position will be diminished.

Safe Haven is available now for $7.99 (free for season pass holders) on all the game's platforms. It's the third of five planned add-ons to Alien: Isolation. Something tells me that none of the five will make the Sevastapol a truly safe place.

This monster is so big it could barely fit into Evolve

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 08:30 AM PST

The Behemoth, Evolve's fourth monster, is a big boy. "He was literally made as large as we could make him," says developer Turtle Rock Studios. The dude is so big he can't even jump.

Jumping is totally overrated, though. Leave that to the bunnies. This creature can roll around, throw exploding balls of magma, snatch up prey with its harpoon-like tongue and isolate them further by summoning walls of rock. Trouble is, being so huge makes the guy an easy target.

Sadly, the Behemoth is being held hostage as a DLC pre-order bonus. If you wait to buy the game, you'll need to fork over $15 to acquire the monster when it becomes available this spring.

You play as a woman in Project Scissors because 'who wants to hear the screams of a grown man?'

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST

The original Clock Tower was a cult hit when it was first released, and it's managed to stay fresh in the minds of horror game fans ever since. The Jennifer Connelly look-a-like lead; the shocking juxtaposition between quaint dot art and horrific, gory death; the themes of body horror; hide-in-plain-sight sociopathy; and a regal, civilized environment that holds constant potential for a primal fight-or-flight response: these are just a few of the elements that make Clock Tower a timeless classic. If the game were to be released for the first time today and marketed as an "indie horror" must-have in the style of Lone Survivor or Slender, I have no doubt that it could be a hit.

The first Clock Tower may never see a re-release on consoles, but that doesn't mean the essence of the game can't live on. Clock Tower's original director Hifume Kono is working a new spiritual sequel to the title called Project Scissors, also known as NightCry, and it's clear he's hoping to make fans of the series happy (and terrified).

In this selection from our three-part interview with Kono-san, we touched upon the sexual symbolism of Clock Tower, how that symbolism will carry over to Project Scissors, the history of violent crime and the psychology of murder, the occult's fascination with women in adolescence (as seen in Carrie and many other films), and a lot more. If you've always wanted to know if the little man with the big scissors in Clock Tower was compensating for something, then you've come to the right place.

New Nintendo 3DS likely coming February 13

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 07:45 AM PST

Ahead of tomorrow's Nintendo Direct, GameStop sources have told Ars Technica that the New Nintendo 3DS is indeed releasing in the US on February 13--just in time for Valentine's Day--and that GameStop will begin taking pre-orders tomorrow.

Additionally, the retailer will be giving $75 and $100 respectively for 3DS and 3DS XL trade-ins towards the New 3DS.

That the ad only includes the XL version of the New 3DS, rather than the face plate compatible New 3DS could have something to do with reports of Nintendo phasing out the smaller sized 3DS in favor of the 2DS.

The next Shadowrun game comes to Kickstarter, funded almost immediately

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 07:30 AM PST

Shadowrun: Hong Kong, the third videogame adaptation of the popular tabletop RPG series, is looking to Kickstarter for funding. The game will -- obviously -- take place in magical cyberpunk Hong Kong, where the player uncovers a "corporate conspiracy nearly thirty years in the making." The campaign was set at $100,000, but was funded almost immediately, leaving only stretch goals.

The final game will be a non-linear 12+ hour tactical romp through a "magically awakened" Hong Kong, but if it reaches certain funding milestones, it will be longer. Other stretch goals include "animatic scene transitions" at $150,000; a new character at $200,000, and a new side mission at $300,000.

Hong Kong will be only released on PC, Mac, and Linux, according to Harebrained Schemes. The company also set a tentative release date of "mid-2015," which is charitable at best.

Also, props to the studio for this sick Double Fine burn in its press release: "In 2012, Harebrained Schemes funded the development of Shadowrun Returns on Kickstarter and became the first video game company that raised over $1M and delivered the game to backers." That's ice cold.

You have until February 17 (my birthday!) to back pre-order the game on Kickstarter.

Over 60 games discounted for PlayStation's 20th anniversary sale

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 07:15 AM PST

Until January 19, a bunch of things are on sale in the PlayStation Store, from PS4 games (most of which you can probably ignore) to PS1 classics. The latter account for much of the PlayStation Vita section (plus PSP games--Tactics Ogre!), because the Vita has no games, but who cares--MediEvil is just $2.40!

Actually, some of the Vita's best are present: Tearaway ($14.40), Persona 4 Golden ($12), Lumines Electronic Symphony ($10.80). I assume Gravity Rush is absent because it's still free for PlayStation Plus members.

Bully is only $4, Resident Evil 4 $8, Okami HD $7, yet no God Hand? Shame.

Picking anything up?

Journey composer Austin Wintory threatened by musician's union

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 06:30 AM PST

Austin Wintory -- the Grammy-nominated composer behind Journey, Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine, and The Banner Saga, among others -- has been fined by the American Federation of Musicians for "violating union rules," reports Variety.

Wintory allegedly recorded the soundtrack for The Banner Saga under non-union auspices, meaning the score was produced without the approval of the union. The AFM's international executive board found Wintory guilty, fining him $2,500. If Wintory does not pay, he will be expelled from the union.

According to Variety, Wintory plans to ignore the AFM's demands, instead donating $2,500 to the Education Through Music charity, "where the money can be used toward building on dreams instead of destroying them."

The American Federation of Musicians is over 100 years old, having existed in some form since 1896. It is currently the "the largest organization in the world representing the interests of professional musicians," according to the AFM's official website.

We've reached out to the AFM for comment and will update this story as necessary.

PlayStation-exclusive Pix the Cat comes to PC this month

Anoxemia finds horror at the bottom of the sea

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST

The thought of dismemberment and/or mutilation freaks me out, for sure. The thought of instead being stuck at the bottom of the ocean with a dwindling oxygen supply evokes a different kind of terror. Sure, there will probably be much less pain, but there will be so much more time to contemplate the end. There will be the knowledge that nobody will ever find traces of the body. There may even be hope of survival, which makes eventual drowning even worse.

That's what Anoxemia appears to be going for, at any rate. No over-the-top gore is shown in the trailer; there is only the panic of being alone in the dark depths, searching for a reason behind the predicament and for a way to the surface.

Anoxemia was approved for Steam Greenlight and will be available for Linux, Mac, and Windows on January 16.

You can get it DRM-free on GOG for PC, Mac, and Linux. This comes with, "exclusive wallpapers for those who purchase before launch." If you go the PlayStation route, it will be Cross-Buy (you'll get it on PS4 and Vita). Pre-orders on the PSN come with a dynamic PS4 theme.

Expect The Order: 1886 to be a series, not a one-off

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 05:30 AM PST

As a single-player only, narrative-driven game, The Order: 1886 feels a tad quaint (in a good way), as even the most classically cinematic, narrative-driven things of recent years (Last of Us, Uncharted, Mass Effect) affix multiplayer modes (but do a better job than when everyone was slapping on bland multiplayer).

That does mean it needs legs, though. Talking to Polygon, Ready at Dawn CEO and The Order creative director Ru Weerasuriya talked a lot about waiting for a console as powerful as the PS4 to run newly-made, real-time-physics-full Ready at Dawn Engine 4.0. A lot of work.

In fact, "It takes too much work for this to be for a single title," Weerasuriya explained.

"We have other games in mind, other things that could be done," he said. "The reality is that we never build a world with the mind set of ‘There is one story and that is that.'  We build a world purely for the purpose of making more than one game."

The music and gameplay of Hotline Miami are so intertwined in my mind that I'm hesitant to listen to tracks off the sequel's soundtrack beforehand. Oh, what the hell? One can't hurt!

This song, "The Way Home, comes from Magic Sword. "We really like the original Hotline Miami, so were excited to get involved with the sequel," the masked electronic group told The Guardian.

"Hotline Miami has a lot in common with '80s movies like Thief and Blade Runner. Movies like that and their synth-heavy soundtracks have always been big inspirations for us."

The Order teaser ditches 'cinematic' for creepy singing children

I'm still a bit wary of the PS4-exclusive The Order, but if they've last minute reimagined the game as a collection of Scary Stories to the Tell in the Dark sung by disgusting children, they might have a good 2D horror game on their hands.

Grand Theft Auto V PC pushed to March, system specs revealed

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 03:45 AM PST

I should have known something was up, but here it is: Grand Theft Auto V won't be available on PC this month as previously announced. Rockstar has delayed the game to March 24, 2015.

The good news, at least for console owners, is that online heists are almost here at long last. That's the plan, anyway. You'll be able to find and play those through GTA Online "in the coming weeks ahead of the PC launch." Heists will be playable on PC at launch on March 24.

Rockstar also sent out new screenshots and system requirements, viewable below.

Far Cry 4 'Escape From Durgesh Prison' DLC is out today

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 03:00 AM PST

In addition to the free Assassin's Creed Unity DLC out today, Far Cry 4 is also getting an add-on. Escape From Durgesh Prison is a timetrial of sorts, where you race the clock to best your friends on leaderboards.

The DLC supports solo and co-op play, and will feature permadeath, where you have to restart the entire mission over again after a failure. If you purchased the Season Pass ($29.99) you can pick it up for free, or pay $9.99 for the privilege, which seems steep.

Persona 3: The Movie: Falling Down gets a new teaser trailer

This will be the third movie for the sub-franchise, and it's titled "Falling Down." Personally, I'm glad that Persona is getting this much love, and Persona 5 is one of my most anticipated games this year.

Jumpjet Rex revels in old-school charm, hits Early Access January 14

Posted: 13 Jan 2015 01:00 AM PST

There's just something about the 8-bit and 16-bit eras of gaming. Even after decades, it's still a remarkable and enduring period that's managed to stand the test of time. With a slick focus on charming visuals and deeply refined gameplay, the classics of the time are still played today. And, with a sizable amount of fans clamoring for the return of such titles, it's easy to see why the endearing nature of 2D games holds strong. Honestly, games just felt more pure back then, and it looks as though some devs are looking to emulate the example set by games from the past.

Originally created as a quick title for GameJam 2014, the developers at Tree Fortress found something special about this peculiar T-Rex wearing jet boots, and decided to flesh it out into a fully featured title. Taking inspiration from classic games like Mega Man and Sonic, the talent behind Jumpjet Rex wanted to offer players a new 2D platformer that's not only goofy fun, but also tough as nails.

GungHo: Puzzle & Dragons Z is still coming west

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 04:00 PM PST

Puzzle & Dragons Z is still coming west, you know. When exactly? Dunno. Sometime. Eventually.

Following the unveiling of Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition, many were beginning to wonder about the fate of GungHo's other Nintendo 3DS role-playing game.

In 2013, GungHo boss Kazuki Morishita announced a localization for Puzzle & Dragons Z was in the works, though the company has remained quiet about it ever since. Speaking with the company over Twitter last week, one distraught fan goaded GungHo into confirming that, yes, a western release is still in the cards. No clue as to when that might happen, though.

Puzzle & Dragons Z released across Japan in December 2013. The 3DS role-playing game takes the dungeon crawling and puzzle elements of the original game and incorporates a more fleshed out world and story. As of July 2014, the title managed to ship over 1.5 million copies.

The mobile game has now been downloaded more than 41 million times worldwide.
