Donkey Kong meets Metal Gear in this hot new track

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 03:15 PM PST

This is a super chopped up version of the DK Rap set to Mike Oldfield's 'Nuclear,' a song you may recognize from Metal Gear Solid V's most recent E3 trailer.

It is also the song that will be played at Kyle's funeral, no matter what he says. Get used to it, MacGregor.

Telltale is working on an original property and unannounced partnerships

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST

In sharing that Telltale Games president and co-founder Kevin Bruner will become the new CEO while Dan Connors shifts to an advisory role, the company hinted at what's in store for us: lots of games, including one not based on an existing license (as well as some that are).

Besides Tales from the Borderlands, Game of Thrones, Minecraft: Story Mode (still funny), and another season of The Walking Dead, the studio says it has "unannounced partnerships and [an] upcoming original IP" in the pipeline. Do these people sleep? And if not, can I get in on that magic? I'd love to turn out consistently good-if-not-great work without pesky distractions like rest.

"Our top priority is to continue fostering an environment where the most talented and creative storytellers in the industry are working side by side with the world's biggest creative partners," says new CEO Kevin Bruner. Connors, who is now the executive advisor, "will help ensure Telltale's vision of continuing to break new ground as leading storytellers in the entertainment space."

Above all, I want a second season of The Wolf Among Us. Bigby has some unfinished business.

Nintendo Direct on Wednesday, Jan 14, New 3DS release date incoming?

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 02:30 PM PST

Today, Nintendo confirmed the date and time for their next Nintendo Direct event: Wednesday, January 14 at 9am Eastern / 6am Pacific. The event will feature Satoru Iwata "and crew" as they cover the spring 2015 lineup for Wii U and 3DS. It will be followed by a press event in San Francisco, which Destructoid plans to attend.

Based on concrete release dates and estimations given by Nintendo in the past, the Direct is likely to cover Code Name: S.T.E.A.M, Majora's Mask 3D, and Yoshi's Wolly World. It's also possible we'll hear something about the Mewtwo DLC for Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS.

We also have reason to believe the North American launch date for the New 3DS will be revealed during the Direct. According to Gamenesia, the date has already been set, and GameStop pre-orders are set to begin "soon." If retailers are starting to make concrete plans, it seems likely the New 3DS' launch is not too far off.

Gravity Ghost's zen planetoid platforming coming on January 26

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 02:00 PM PST

Funny, I feel like I just posted about the release date for a delayed indie game featuring voice work by Ashly Burch and music from some of my favorite composers. Talk about déjà vu. In contrast to There Came an Echo, Gravity Ghost a chill platformer rather than a stressful strategy game.

In today's post on the development blog, designer Erin Robinson dropped news of the release date, and it is soon. Like, two weeks from today.

With both of these announcements today, maybe we will complete the trifecta and learn when to expect Scale too. Wishful thinking, perhaps.

There Came an Echo set to release on Steam February 24

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 01:00 PM PST

There Came an Echo is Iridium Studios' second Kickstarter success, but as a more ambitious project it took a bit longer than Sequence to release after its crowdfunding campaign. Originally projected for a June 2014 release, it is now officially set to show up on Steam on February 24. That's a little over a month away!

Backers will be able to play the voice-controlled strategy game three days early. Personally, I'm excited to finally get some more time with it after it impressed me last year at PAX East. It even made honorable mention as one of my most anticipated games of this year.

Microsoft announces Forza 6...with a nice, stationary model of a Ford

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 11:15 AM PST

Forget the Euro-dynamism and great soundtrack of Forza Horizon. Microsoft and Turn 10 have announced Forza Motorsport 6, baby!

Look at that well-modeled Ford GT, Forza 6's "cover car." Look at it. Look at it again. Excited yet? Look at it some more. Look at the car, not moving, in a plain white room. So shiny. Look at it. Look at it. Look at it.

That's it.

They'll show the actual game at E3.

So, the Xbox One won an Emmy

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST

Microsoft winning an Emmy for the Xbox One has set me on a path to learning more about these awards than I've ever cared to. Forget about the Primetime Emmys (surprisingly easy, right?) -- this goes deeper. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences also gives out awards for, among other things, "outstanding achievement in technical or engineering development."

That's where the Xbox One comes in. The console won as a "Television Enhancement Device" at the 66th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards for its "industry-leading television-on-demand and media center capabilities," says Microsoft. I don't use those enough.

Sony president and CEO Kazuo "Riiiidge Racer" Hirai was also honored during the ceremony. He took home a Lifetime Achievement Award in part for his "successful stewardship of Sony's PlayStation business," according to Engineering Achievement Committee co-chair Seth Haberman.

What does any of this have to do with that tasty dish? Well, you see, Kyle's been bugging us to use food photos all day long to no avail, and I caved. You know what the Xbox One looks like.

Kung Lao shows no mercy in his first Mortal Kombat X screenshot

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST

I'm not sure what Scorpion plans on doing here. He's in what we'd call a "no win situation." Kung Lao's fist is poised to usher Scorpion into a world of pain, and he's opted to imaginary limbo instead of fighting back. Maybe he should propose a friendship.

This is the first screenshot of Kung Lao in Mortal Kombat X as recently tweeted by Ed Boon, co-creator of the franchise. We recently learned of Kung Lao's return, and more details will be known when the next issue of GamesMaster Magazine comes out, as it has the exclusive. One thing's for sure, though -- Kung Lao hasn't gone soft in his old age.

Hidden 'Totaka's Song' discovered in Mario Kart 8

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST

Composer Kazumi Totaka has been hiding this tune in Nintendo games for over two decades now. While some of us will best recognize "Totaka's Song" from Mario Paint, it has turned up in titles like Link's Awakening, Luigi's Mansion, Animal Crossing, Wii Sports, and many others.

Turns out it's in Mario Kart 8, too, because of course it is. As explained by YouTube user Somewhat Awesome Games, the Yoshis on the sidelines of tracks such as Yoshi's Valley will hum the song at random. Is it really that simple? Well, yes, but the audio is suuuper faint.

Be sure to disable the stage music if you want to hear the secret in-person.

Now that Awesome Games Done Quick 2015 is over, which runs should we watch?

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 08:30 AM PST

Awesome Games Done Quick ended this weekend, and what a show it was! The week-long live-streaming gaming marathon raised more than $1.5 million for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

We covered several breakouts from the event, including: TASbot shenanigans, a wild Super Mario Bros. 3 glitch, I Wanna Be The Boshy, Kaizo Mario World, and some incredible Tetris skills.

I'm still catching up -- there's so much footage to comb through even if you're only looking at recommended speedruns! -- but my favorite so far is Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels.

What were your highlights? Take a look at the full list and let us know.

The Grudge director is working on Project Scissors 'for free'

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST

Earlier this month, our first look at Clock Tower spiritual successor Project Scissors: NightCry arrived in the form of a live-action trailer made by Ju-on and The Grudge director Takashi Shimizu. It was promising little piece of marketing, but it didn't leave much of an idea of how the game would play.

By a stroke of good fortune, Destructoid had an opportunity to conduct a three-part interview series with Hifume Kono, former Clock Tower honcho and director of NightCry, to help fill in the blanks. We learned about why disempowerment can allow human bravery to shine, how the "ultimate horror awaits beyond death," and perhaps most surprisingly, how the collaboration between filmmaker Shimizu-san and game developer Kono-san came together.

I've read this interview over three times to make sure I'm not misunderstanding something, and every time I read it, it says the same thing: "Mr. Shimizu really was intrigued about the project, and kindly agreed to work with us for free as our partner!!!" The fact that a Hollywood director, whose films have brought in millions, was willing to work for free on a new survival horror game is unprecedented in today's market. I'm still struggling to believe it.

I'll be picking up NightCry at launch, if only to show my support for creators who value passion and creativity over financial rewards. While Shimizu-san may not be asking for money, I'm going to do my best to throw some at him anyway.

Metal Gear modders put Ground Zeroes in first-person

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 07:45 AM PST

Almost disappointed I have Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes on PS4, where it was recently like $6, rather than on PC, where people have been modding all sorts of zany crap into it.

The above first-person mod is low on the zany scale, which is shaped like a silly straw and has novelty sounds when you set things on it, but as Grand Theft Auto V showed, we get weirdly fascinated by shifts in camera perspective.

Thanks, Cannibal Steven! Uh, not me.

Do these DmC: Definitive Edition screenshots do anything for you?

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 07:15 AM PST

While I'm far more interested in this summer's Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (Vergil's playable!), I am still curious about DmC: Definitive Edition. Never did get around to playing the original Ninja Theory release despite some tempting sales.

The new version has significant upgrades beyond the usual talk of 1080p, 60 frames per second, and touched-up textures. The list is over here and includes stuff like manual target locking, balance changes based on fan feedback, harder difficulties, and a 20-percent-faster Turbo Mode.

You might know all of that already in which case, yeah, go ahead to the gallery. Feel anything?

Clam chowder: The moment I fell in love with D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 06:45 AM PST

Keep an eye on David Young (the guy who doesn't look like Philip Seymour Hoffman). He's the time-traveling protagonist of D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die, an Xbox One adventure game from Deadly Premonition director Swery, and oh my god that pile of oyster crackers is too much.

This is the scene where the game clicked for me. D4 is free to download this month with an Xbox Live Gold membership, so it's the ideal time to start playing. Come meet these and other unusual characters. I mean, just listen to this fantastic theme song. That's going on repeat.

LyteShot Kickstarter aims to take gaming outside

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 06:30 AM PST

Some recent Nintendo games have had little messages gently suggesting that the player take a break and go outside, but LyteShot wants to take that a step further. Built to take outside and play games in actual space with actual people, I can't help but feel like I am not in the target audience for this. Maybe someone can make a game where I get to remain in the comfort of my home while commanding other people who are playing outside. I can get down with that.

LyteShot connects to mobile phones and essentially acts like a networked lasertag set that is not limited to dank, foggy arcades. One neat thing is that it has a few different attachments, including a gun for the pew pew, a dagger for assassin-style games, and a wand for those comfortable enough to shout goofy incantations in public. Expelliarmus!

LyteShot has more than a month left in its Kickstarter campaign, and it has already raised more than 10% of its $168,534 goal.

Review: Super Mega Baseball

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST

Like many people out there, I learned how to play most sports through videogames. By the time I entered various real-life leagues for baseball, basketball, and football, I had a grasp of the basic concepts of each, mostly thanks to classics like Bad News Baseball and Super Baseball 2020, two of my personal favorites.

Super Mega Baseball seeks to remind us of that retro arcade-like era of sports, where the games were mechanically sound, but more exciting than a hardcore simulation.

Turns out Evolve's PC specs aren't the real monster

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 05:45 AM PST

It's becoming a common trend that it requires an increasingly absurd PC to even think about running the latest triple-A games. Evolve is a slight reprieve from that. Prospective hunters won't necessarily need the latest gear to embark on this monster raid, but they can't come equipped with the equivalent of a BB gun either.

Turtle Rock Studio's posted Evolve's recommended and minimum requirements on the game's site. For an ideal experience, the developer advises your PC have:

Intel CPU: Core i7-920
AMD CPU: A8-3870K
System RAM: 6GB
Nvidia video card: GeForce GTX 670 or GTX 760
ATI video card: Radeon R9 280
Video memory: 2GB
Hard drive: 50GB
OS: Windows 7 64-bit

Sore throat pain strikes in our Game of Thrones finale!

Through heartache, assumed betrayal, and borderline acceptable fight scenes, Mike and Will have made it to the end of Game of Thrones' first episode. And boy howdy, is it a doozy!

People actually die in this one!

Keep your eyes glued to Destructoid, because I've got a feeling Game of Thrones is only just getting started. And we're going to stick with it up to the very end.

Devolver, Gambitious and the Breach & Clear: Deadline teams WANT YOU

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST

Back in September, I had the chance to check out Mighty Rabbit and Gun Media's latest title Breach & Clear: Deadline in person. If you'd like to read my thoughts on what I saw while there, this should get you back up to speed.

It really wouldn't be fair for me to have all the fun, though. Right? Here's where YOU come in! Devolver Digital, Mighty Rabbit, Gun Media and Gambitious need your help get this game ready to enter Steam Early Access. Wes Keltner from Gun Media explains things better, here:

"We've been working on Deadline for roughly eight months. We're at a point now where we need feedback from players that love games. This isn't a PR play, it's a genuine request."

According to Keltner, the team "got a lot of great feedback on the original B&C. Our fans helped us hone that experience," he says. "It could have been a better experience if we could have worked alongside the players earlier in the cycle. We knew when we started Deadline, that we wanted to get to pre-alpha quickly, so we could work more hands-on with players."

With the title now in pre-alpha, "the best way to improve is to invite lifelong gamers in and listen to them. We're going to Early Access soon," explains Keltner, "but the worst thing we could do is to go there with indefinite time frames and a product that's unplayable. That reeks of the cash grabs that were going on leading up to Valve's announcements on the rules changing for Early Access. That's not us.

"We're a small indie team that wants community feedback so that the next few months of development are spent working towards a product that that not only ships, but was crafted by the players. That's why we need Destructoid's help!"

That new Freedom Wars announcement involves the Propaganda Idols

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 04:30 AM PST

Last week Japan had a special Freedom Wars related event. During the convention-like affair, Sony had an announcement for fans -- a new Propaganda Idol project is underway.

Based on the fictional idols within the confines of the game, the project, called "5," involves five new songs from the outfit. The in-game reasoning behind the group is to pump up prisoners in the dystopian universe.

The "tease" ended up being a lottery for attendees, not an announcement for DLC or a sequel.

Harmonix surprises everyone with an imminent trio of Rock Band DLC songs

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 03:45 AM PST

Remember the days of yesteryear when a bevy of plastic instruments was a de facto part of your interior design? Well, if you so wish, that look could make a comeback, as Harmonix is adding to the Rock Band library for the first time in almost two years.

Tomorrow, January 13, three songs will be available for purchase to play on Rock Band 3 on PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii: "R U Mine?" by Arctic Monkeys, "Shepherd of Fire" by Avenged Sevenfold, and "Something From Nothing" by Foo Fighters. The tracks will go for the standard $1.99 per song; no discount track pack pricing was announced, as was usually customary.

Regarding the sudden reappearance of DLC, Harmonix's Nick Chester told Destructoid "We had an exciting opportunity to add new content to the already massive Rock Band library with a song from Arctic Monkeys -- a band that's never been in a Rock Band title before! -- as well as new music from fan favorites Avenged Sevenfold and Foo Fighters. We couldn't pass it up. Also, we wanted to see if we could still do it. Turns out we can. It's sort of like riding a bike.

When asked for comment about the possibility of this becoming a regular event, the studio didn't want to divulge too much. Chester was predictably mum, simply saying "Regarding future DLC...let's not get ahead of ourselves!"

Here's a closer look at the Metal Gear Solid V chicken hat

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 03:30 AM PST

Konami announced recently that Metal Gear Solid V will have a special item when it launches later this year (?) -- the chicken hat. It will appear after multiple deaths, and if you pick it up, it makes the game easier. Think of it like Nintendo's optional Super Guide.

If you're itching to get some more close-up shots of the hat, the publisher has you covered. Check them out in the gallery below, as well as the video if you missed the original reveal. I still don't get why people are pissed off at this thing -- just don't use it.

This Sons of Anarchy: The Prospect teaser is...ooff

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 02:30 AM PST

For what feels like years now Sons of Anarchy creator and showrunner Kurt Sutter has been teasing an "amazing" game based on the series. While many speculated that it would be a GTA-like PC or console title, we now know that it will be a mobile game -- and based on this trailer, it looks...underwhelming.

It looks like there may be motorcycle riding, gunplay, and choices like executions and plenty of drug use. In all seriousness mobile games can deliver perfect arcade experiences and deep engaging games, but this particular one doesn't look too hot.

Don't worry, Naughty Dog isn't going to make Uncharted 4 'too dark'

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST

In a video interview with Game Informer, Uncharted 4 creative director Neil Druckmann and game director Bruce Straley discussed the direction of A Thief's End and the inherent challenges to following up the critically acclaimed The Last of Us.

The pair also touched on whether they'd be comfortable handing off a hypothetical The Last of Us 2 to a new creative team, with both agreeing they would be uncomfortable with the idea. However, a Last of Us sequel and the studio's new ideas are on hold until development on Uncharted 4 comes to an end. "We're 110% in Uncharted 4 territory now, blinders on, make this awesome," said Straley.

When asked if there were any misconceptions or concerns they would like to clear up, Straley reassured fans that Uncharted 4 would be an Uncharted game through and through. "We're not gonna make it too dark, everybody calm down, take a breath." The game would have a deeper focus on the humanity of Nathan Drake, but the series' trademark pulpy tone would remain intact.

They also discussed what making a new Uncharted game means for a post-Last of Us Naughty Dog. Druckmann in particular commented on the open nature of the PSX demo and how it would inform Uncharted 4 as a whole. "That's that wider, more sandbox feel that now we're drawn to after having worked on something like The Last of Us," said Druckmann.

Stealth will also play a part in A Thief's End, according to Straley. "In Uncharted 2, well, action stealth was as far as we got with stealth. So now, how do we make it accessible and fast-paced and all this, and still give you that ability to drop into stealth, and to play with the AI... [...] Like, just stealth in and of itself, is expanded from Uncharted 2 through 3 and The Last of Us to now."

The duo also discussed the challenge inherent in moving from a grounded, somber game like The Last of Us to a "pulpy spectacle" like Uncharted. "Now we want to go like 'let's blow some shit up!' and the team's like 'woah, woah, woah,'" said Straley, discussing the "new relationship" he and Druckmann have with Naughty Dog.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is currently set to release sometime this year.

Majora's Mask 3DS will have a more detailed explanation of quests

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 01:00 AM PST

When The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D was announced, it was said that a few changes would be coming, just like the Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker remakes. We've already heard about extra fishing ponds, but now we know that the Bomber's Notebook will be expanded upon.

The notebook was essentially a way to keep track of quests in the game, but it wasn't all that detailed, and it was incredibly easy to miss stuff in the original incarnation. Eiji Aonuma told GamesMaster magazine directly in a recent interview, "We were told by Mr. Miyamoto that he felt there were a lot of users who finished the original without even noticing all the hidden events scattered around the town. He said that he wanted us to make sure users were more aware of them this time around."

He goes on to explain the reasoning, stating, "When the game was launched, I believed that the real purpose was for players to overcome this pressure and experience a sense of achievement. On a portable console, users don't have to choose when or where they play, they can keep on playing the game whenever they want. I think this should allow all users to enjoy that special sense of achievement."

People are already claiming that the game is being "dumbed down." Barring the fact that we don't have any concrete details, to that I'd respond -- when's the last time you played it? Some of those questlines are so devilishly hidden that the vast majority of gamers wouldn't be able to find them after hundreds of hours of searching. As long as it doesn't explicitly ruin the entire puzzle, I'm fine with it. Part of my problem with the original is that a lot of things were way too obscure or designed as nothing more than an arbitrary time sink, to the point where they weren't even enjoyable.

Nintendo quits selling consoles and games in Brazil

Posted: 12 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST

Nintendo will no longer distribute games and consoles in Brazil, the company has announced, citing Brazil's infamously high videogame console tariffs as the reason behind the about-face. In an interview with UOL Games, Bill van Zyll, Nintendo of America's director and general manager for Latin America, said the company's exodus is "temporary." At press time, Nintendo has not set any plans for a return.

"Brazil is an important market for Nintendo and home to many passionate fans, but unfortunately challenges in the local business environment have made our current distribution model unsustainable in the country," said Van Zyll. The challenges include "high tariffs on imports" and Nintendo's lack of a Brazilian manufacturing plant.

Nintendo's plans for the future don't seem any more concrete than just keeping an eye on things, according to Van Zyll. "Working together with the Juegos de Video Latinoamérica [Nintendo's distributors for Latin America], we will monitor the evolution of the business environment and evaluate the best way to serve our Brazilian fans in the future."

Manufacturing consoles and games in Brazil would circumvent the country's high taxes, as Microsoft learned when the company began making Xbox Ones in Brazil, giving it a significant price advantage. Brazilian Xbox Ones cost 800 Brazilian reals -- or $700 USD -- less than imported PS4s.
