A Quiver of Crows looks lovely, seeks Greenlight approval

Posted: 10 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST

Although I'm not a shmup aficionado by any stretch of the imagination, I do enjoy playing them from time to time. The ones that I tend to go for are typically on the unusual end of the spectrum. They either stand out due to their unique art style, or perhaps they might have an extraordinarily good soundtrack that manages to keep me interested. Sometimes both, as is the case with one of my personal favorites, Boss Baddie's gorgeous Really Big Sky.

Sheado.net's A Quiver of Crows definitely falls into the first category. Its clean and simple look and interesting use of morbid psychedelica is at once easy on the eyes and mildly disturbing when you take the time to think about what you're actually looking at.

The title's Greenlight page goes over most of the basics you'd expect from a game in this genre with perhaps a couple of deviations. Enemy movement, for instance, won't always follow preset patterns; in fact, they will attempt to target you and hunt you down. The game also features local couch co-op, which is always a refreshing option for a PC game.

If you're interested in learning more about this unusual, but promising-looking shooter, you can find out more by visiting the game's website or its Steam Greenlight page.

Zoku Segare Ijiri will make you scratch your head

Posted: 10 Jan 2015 06:00 AM PST

Hey everybody! My name is Steve, and you may or may not know me from a blog I do over on Tumblr called Obscure Video Games. I enjoy digging up weird old games that most people have forgotten about and sharing my findings, usually in the form of animated GIFs. Some people have compared it to being a flasher on an elementary school playground; but, y'know, in a good way.

Today I bring to you a very Japansese game called Zoku Segare Ijiri. Enix (shortly before its merger with Square) released it in 2002 for the PS2 as the sequel to 1999's Segare Iijiri on the PS1. These two bizarre mini-game collections don't really look that different from each other. The only things that seem to set Zoku Segare Ijiri apart are slightly better graphics and the large piles of feces such as the one undulating seductively in the image above.

There was a time when that would have surprised me, but that time has long since passed. Japanese cartoon comedy is well known for its love of soft serve-style poops, and Zoku Segare Iijiri makes no exceptions to the rule. The disembodied head in the background is wondering why nobody wanted to localize this for Western audiences. I know the feeling.

PSA: Pick up the Roundabout demo on Steam

Posted: 10 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST

We've posted about No Goblin's Roundabout before. Yup, it's that '70s B-movie game about driving a "spinning limousine." I'll be the first to admit that based on the gameplay footage I'd seen, I thought it would probably be OK, especially for someone who enjoys light puzzling and quirky humor, but it wasn't until I recently snagged the demo on Steam that it really sank in. This game is hilarious. Seriously, I haven't chuckled this hard in ages. The FMV scenes are just so terrible/amazing that it had me playing the game as a means to get to the next scene.

Some games try to be funny, but it's really hit or miss with me. Roundabout just nails it, though. Of course, your mileage will vary; what cracks me up may leave you thoroughly unimpressed. That's the beauty of the demo in this case. You can give this thing a whirl, free of charge.

Oh, that reminds me. We have one FREE copy of the Deluxe Edition of the game courtesy of No Goblin that we'll be giving away to a lucky Dtoider in the comment section this evening so keep an eye on your private messages to see if you're the winner!

In the interim, make sure to give the Steam demo a shot. It's absolutely worth your time.

Puzzle & Dragons downloads now exceed 41 million

Posted: 10 Jan 2015 02:00 AM PST

Puzzle & Dragons has now surpassed 41 million downloads worldwide, more than 6 million of which came out of North America, publisher GungHo Online announced this week.

The overall figure has increased from 37 million in August, when 4 million of the downloads were spread across the United States and Canada. It's certainly not the phenomenon it is in Japan, but the fusion of Pokémon and Bejeweled seems to be generating some traction in the West.

The momentum only figures to build now that GungHo has announced a crossover project with Nintendo, Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition, uniting the medium's most iconic franchise with one of the hottest mobile games out there. Sounds like a surefire recipe for success.

Puzzle & Dragons is available on mobile devices for free via iTunesGoogle Play, and Amazon.

Mortal Kombat X and Batman: Arkham Knight round up weekend deals

Posted: 10 Jan 2015 01:00 AM PST

It felt like ages ago when we last heard about Mortal Kombat X, but now that the title inches closer to release, pre-order deals are showing up (along with a handful of other AAAs).

Digital retailer GMG's VIP deals return this weekend, with MKX, Arkham Knight, Attila, and a few other titles up for grabs. For those planning to play day one, the discounts are up to 25% off.

On the console side of things, PS Vita actually net a deal or two, with the GameStop "exclusive" Tales of Heart R on the price chop block. The PS4 eBay deal for $359 we mentioned earlier this week is still also still going strong.

Lastly, for those looking for a new laptop (aka swimming with money), Broadwell machines are finally here. If words like 5th gen CPU and QHD+ display doesn't mean anything to you, you can safely ignore the laptop section below. :)

What might a futuristic Vanillaware game look like?

Posted: 10 Jan 2015 12:00 AM PST

Vanillaware chief George Kamitani has a lovely annual tradition. Every New Year's the Dragon's Crown and Odin Sphere design director celebrates by sharing a lavish piece of art with the world.

It isn't a teaser for the studio's next project. Well, it could be. History suggests otherwise, though. The previous pieces, some of which are pictured below, bear little resemblance to Vanillaware's recent ventures, you know, aside from Kamitani's unmistakable signature style.

It's just an incredibly pretty/weird thing to marvel at, a little window into what it might be like if Vanillaware were ever to stray from its medieval fantasy roots. The robotic sci-fi look isn't half bad.

XSEED hints at the games it's localizing this year

Posted: 09 Jan 2015 05:00 PM PST

Those wily folks at XSEED are up to no good again, craftily teasing the Internet with crafty teasers.

The localization studio shared a New Year's card via Facebook yesterday, one that foreshadows a handful of unannounced projects the publisher ostensibly has in the pipeline. Of course, the Internet is already hard at work trying to solve the mystery behind the silhouetted images.

Some intrepid souls at NeoGAF are poring over artwork from just about every niche Japanese game under the sun, beginning with the usual suspects, such as brands owned by XSEED's parent company Marvelous and their frequent partner Nihon Falcom.

It helps that part of this multi-headed cat is already out of the bag, as XSEED recently let slip a bunch of new domain registrations. Those sites indicate the group is handling Corpse Party: Blood Drive, Xanadu Next, and Lord of Magna, all of which seem right up the studio's alley.

A domain for "Trails of Cold Steel," which sounds like a subtitle from The Legend of Heroes series, has also manifest online. However, that particular name doesn't correlate with any of the existing Japanese monikers. Title changes are definitely a part of the localization business, though.

One of the silhouettes seems to match up with a face from Lord of Magna, while another appears to come from Ys: The Ark of Napishtim, which previously released on PlayStation 2, PSP, and Windows PC. I'll speculate more Senran Kagura is on the way and hope IA/VT Colorful is in tow.

[Update: Another silhouette is thought to be from Onechanbara Z: Kagura with Nonono.]
