| Flameseeker Chronicles: Is 2015 the Guild Wars 2 expansion year? Posted: 06 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Opinion, Guild Wars 2, Rumors, Flameseeker Chronicles, Buy-to-Play If GW2 fans have sounded a little like hungry baby birds repeatedly peeping, "Expansion!" for the past couple of months, it's not without reason: The most recent NCsoft financial report conference call reportedly contained hints at expansion plans, and ArenaNet seems to have something mysterious in the works for PAX South this year. But are there any real reasons to think that we might be getting an expansion announcement in 2015 when we've gotten our hopes up to no avail before? | Isles of Eventide invites you to live as an animal Posted: 06 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, New Titles, Crowdfunding Playing as a Human or Elf has been done to death, so why not switch over to the animal kingdom? That's the premise of the fledgling Isles of Eventide (no relation to Rubies of Eventide), which is currently seeking funds on Kickstarter.Isles of Eventide will invite players to inhabit the role of a canine, feline, or equine living on one of many islands in a magical archipelago. Survival against the elements, predators, and hunger will be one of the major themes of the game, although there will be less stressful features such as crafting and companions as well. Between adventures, players will get to travel to their own personal island, which can be customized with decorations and utilities. The team is seeking $50,000 CAD to get development going, although it certainly welcomes more. One of the stretch goals, at the $100,000 CAD tier, promises to add offspring that can be raised from birth.

| New Kickstarter sandbox Identity promises 'complete freedom and a focus on player interaction' Posted: 06 Jan 2015 07:30 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Real-Life, Trailers, Video, Business Models, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, PvP, News Items, Crime, Miscellaneous, Sandbox, Crowdfunding, Player-Generated Content, Buy-to-Play Who's ready for some new Kickstarter MMOs for 2015? How about an ambitious modern-day sandbox? That'd be Identity, an MMO by indie studio Asylum Entertainment, headed up by Mortal Online vet John "Paratus" VanderZwet. The game promises a dynamic, player-run open world, player-driven economy, player housing, minigames like karaoke and paintball, and what sounds like open PvP complete with "player police force, gangs, cartels, [and] businesses."The title's business model isn't discussed in detail, but it appears to be buy-to-play; VanderZwet says it won't have a sub and won't be pay-to-win: "We hate 'pay to win' games as much as anybody, and will always ensure that items and upgrades purchased with real money will not give a notable advantage in-game." A 10 CAD pledge is the cheapest with game access; pledges run all the way up to 5000 CAD. Asylum is seeking 150,000 CAD. Closed beta has not been announced, but pledge awards are scheduled for "delivery" by December 2016.

| SMITE's cinematic trailer on the eve of the World Championships Posted: 06 Jan 2015 07:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Trailers, Video, News Items, Free-to-Play, MOBA The rivalry between Thor and Guan Yi isn't usually acknowledged by mythology experts, but that's doubtlessly an oversight. The point is that if you want to watch an improbably busty goddess tap about in heals while fighting a wolf-beast, now is your chance. Click on past the break to watch the full trailer. It may not give you a whole lot of insight into mythology, but it will give you an idea of the game, at least. | The Daily Grind: Does your MMO guild use social networking tools? Posted: 06 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Culture, Guilds, Opinion, Massively Meta, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous The apparent popularity of ZergID, the most recent social network and online gathering spot for MMO players and guilds, made me wonder just how many gamers actively use these types of tools. I can remember them at least as far back as the early 2000s, when ezBoard was king (remember ezBoard?!). More modern versions, like Enjin, expanded on the message board format to include profiles and calendars and even DKP.But my guild has shied away from most such tools. We've always had a custom-built website with our own tools, some purchased software and some handcrafted just for us. I wouldn't want to risk losing data on another network, and truthfully, most of my guild's communication is done through other outlets anyway, like Steam, voice chat, and text-based chat channels. What about you folks? Do you use ZergID, Enjin, or other sites to organize or track your friends and guildmates online?

| Smedley wants to talk more about monetization Posted: 05 Jan 2015 04:30 PM PST Filed under: Sci-Fi, Business Models, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, PvP, News Items, Free-to-Play, PlanetSide 2 John Smedley's not done talking about monetization. The SOE CEO posted on Reddit a bit ago and added to the recent discussion surrounding PlanetSide 2 drop rates, the cert economy, and F2P in general."PlanetSide 2 only recently has turned profitable on an operating basis," Smedley wrote. He also says that the majority of players have a ton of certs because SOE didn't balance properly and "erred on the side of giving away too many or making things cost too little so we don't make you grind too hard." Smedley takes issue with the rhetoric painting SOE as "money grubbing a-holes," but he does own up to the company's lack of clear communication on this particular issue.

| Frontier testing Elite server-side fix tonight Posted: 05 Jan 2015 03:00 PM PST Filed under: Sci-Fi, MMO Industry, Patches, News Items, Elite: Dangerous Last weekend's Elite: Dangerous server hiccup left some players unable to log in. If you're one of those players, you might be interested in Frontier's official response which was posted earlier today on the game's official forums."We have a server side fix in-place to go live tomorrow, it's just undergoing some final testing tonight and tomorrow morning before making its way to the live servers," writes Frontier's Andrew Barlow. "This should fix it for everyone that's not already been fixed by customer services already. We just want to ensure that the fix is correct and safe so we don't cause more issues for players that are currently unaffected."

| Guild Wars 2 hosts a Wintersday twitter contest this week Posted: 05 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Contests, Culture, News Items, Guild Wars 2, Buy-to-Play The holiday season is over. It's over. We're done. But you could still win some stuff from Guild Wars 2 if you're willing to slap some stencils up on your window. The team behind the game is hosting a Twitter-based contest this week, starting today and running until January 9th, with one lucky winner each day receiving a Griffon Mail Carrier. How can you win? Put some Guild Wars 2-themed stencils up on your window of choice, take a picture, and tweet it to the main Twitter account for the game this week with the hashtags #GW2 and #Wintersday. For those not feeling terribly creative, there are pre-made stencils available to fulfill the requirements. Sure, maybe you're happy to have the holiday decorations taken down, but if you want that mail carrier, you'll get to it. There's still time to enter the other Wintersday contests as well, although those are a little more elaborate; you can read the full details on the contests page.
