| The Stream Team: Returning for round two of The Repopulation Posted: 17 Jan 2015 09:00 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Sci-Fi, Video, PvP, Free-to-Play, Livestream, Sandbox, The Stream Team, The Repopulation Last time, Massively's MJ showed the very beginnings of life in The Repopulation, including character creation and the newbie trainers. This time she's diving head-first into the fray, practicing some combat on the training grounds before heading out into the open world. Since the game's a sandbox, there is no prescribed path for her to follow, so who knows which direction her adventures will take? Will she come across hostile fauna and friendly players or the reverse? Maybe she'll discover some hidden gem, or maybe just gems in general. Join us live at 12:00 p.m. for this second look into the early access. Game: The Repopulation Host: MJ Guthrie Date: Saturday, January 17th, 2015 Time: 12:00 p.m. EST Enjoy our Stream Team video below. | SOE's Adam Clegg apologizes for H1Z1 airdrop snafu Posted: 17 Jan 2015 08:00 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Horror, Business Models, Game Mechanics, PvP, News Items, Post-Apocalyptic, Sandbox, Buy-to-Play, H1Z1 In the wake of this week's H1Z1 early access launch issues and "pay-to-win" airdrop controversy, SOE's Adam "Arclegger" Clegg offered a lengthy apology and explanation to the unruly mob on Reddit.I wanted to address what I said in an earlier stream with NGTZombies prior to our release. I said you cannot buy a gun or ammo and it had to be found in the world. When you are on a stream, and you are talking about your game, you tend to talk a million miles an hour both to keep the information flowing and to keep it entertaining. But sometimes things get said without completely thinking about what you are saying 100% through. H1Z1 is a massive game with a lot of systems, some of which we were tuning every day and finishing last minute. When I said you can't buy any guns or ammo, I completely disregarded the possibility of airdrops and meant that you can't buy a gun or ammo and have it go into your starting loadout, or your loadout immediately like you were buying a gun from the gun store.Clegg explained that during testing, the loot-heavy airdrops resulted in a "gladiator style brawl" that epitomized the conflict SOE wanted to generate in the game. "Whether you agree with us or not," he wrote, "that is how we want airdrops to work." The second half of his post covers the details of the changes incoming to the system as noted yesterday. SOE President John Smedley announced last night that the studio will grant refunds to those early access purchasers who request them by Sunday. Self-initiated refunds through Steam are also now possible.

| The Daily Grind: What does Trove need to do to succeed? Posted: 17 Jan 2015 05:00 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Culture, Opinion, Free-to-Play, The Daily Grind, Sandbox, Trove This month I've made a point to dabble in Trove and check out how far the game's come now that it's in a semi-launched state. So far I'm somewhat pleased as it's running well, intuitive to handle, fun to play, and not half bad on the eyes.I don't think anyone, Trion included, is under the impression that Trove is going to be some sort of breakout blockbuster. However, it could be a possible sleeper hit, especially if it keeps generating good word of mouth and doesn't overreach with its business model. My question for you today is, what do you think Trove needs to do in 2015 to succeed? Should Trion throw more advertising out there? Does it need to go bigger? Are there cross-promotional opportunities here? Is it missing a key system that could put it over the top? Or is it on the right track and should keep on going as is?

| This is what it's like in Tree of Savior's closed beta Posted: 16 Jan 2015 04:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Classes, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, News Items What's it like in the Tree of Savior closed beta? Steparu has the answers in a brief but video-filled impressions piece published earlier today. He says that there's not a lot of customization in this particular build, but he does praise the game's unique barracks system and outlines what it's like to play a Wizard and a Swordsman.Continue reading This is what it's like in Tree of Savior's closed beta

| Xsyon kicks off season of in-game events Posted: 16 Jan 2015 01:00 PM PST Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Events (In-Game), Xsyon, Sandbox Why settle for one measly event when you can have a whole host of them? That's the approach that sandbox MMO Xsyon is taking with its event season. The season, which begins today, will feature a slew of in-game events on different days. These include treasure hunts, timed battles, navigation competitions, capture the flag games, and a Valentine's Day event. The team is scheduling the events on different days and times "to accommodate players from every time zone." A calendar of upcoming events is on the official website. | Al Rivera discusses his role in Star Trek Online on Reddit Posted: 16 Jan 2015 12:00 PM PST Filed under: Sci-Fi, Culture, News Items, Star Trek Online, Free-to-Play, Subscription Who is Captain Geko? It was a fairly innocent question posed on Reddit earlier in the week by a user who happened to group with someone using that name in Star Trek Online. The answer is that it's the usual screen name of lead designer Al Rivera, who took the opportunity to respond to the question with a larger discussion of what makes the game what it is and how the game's microtransaction model is set up.Rivera discusses his experience with the franchise and being a longtime fan from the age of 10, as well as the fact that the game's microtransactions are decided upon chiefly based on what will keep the lights on and keep the game fundamentally free-to-play. While he states clearly that not every decision comes down to him, at the end of the day he's proud of what the team has accomplished and the state of the game. If you want a look behind the curtain at one of the people in charge of Star Trek Online, take the time to read Rivera's full answer. [Thanks to Lootcritter for the tip!]

| Guild Wars 2 to nerf might, buff confusion Posted: 16 Jan 2015 11:00 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Patches, Previews, Guild Wars 2, Buy-to-Play There will be a few small but significant balance changes coming to Guild Wars 2 with its January 27th patch as outlined in a new dev diary today. The devs declared that the might boon is "exceptionally strong" and will see a nerf with the patch, bringing down the amount of power and condition damage that might stacks emitted. On the flip side, confusion will hit for 33% more, but in PvE combat only. Other patch balance changes include nerfing a few items and tweaking professions due to the might nerf. "The profession-specific updates this time around will be a bit more focused on the general usability of certain skills, with targeted reductions on outlier skills," the team said.

| RIFT spurns hoverboards and brings out hoverbikes for 2015 Posted: 16 Jan 2015 10:30 AM PST Filed under: Fantasy, Video, Culture, News Items, Free-to-Play, RIFT, Subscription Do you all like your current MMOs? More than you like RIFT? That's fair. But do you like your current MMO more than you like... hover bikes? Faced with the choice, the team behind RIFT is hoping that when it comes down to the wire, your answer of what game you love the most will be answered with a resounding chorus of "hover bikes!"Hey, it's close enough. Yes, bikes that do not roll but instead hover slightly above the ground are being floated out to RIFT for a limited time. If you want to not-actually-roll through Telara with these stylish mounts, you'd best log on and grab them promptly; they're available for only a limited time. And who doesn't love hover bikes, after all? Especially when they have a video showing off just past the break. Continue reading RIFT spurns hoverboards and brings out hoverbikes for 2015

| Massively hands-on: Let's talk about The Repopulation Posted: 16 Jan 2015 10:00 AM PST Filed under: Betas, Sci-Fi, Game Mechanics, MMO Industry, New Titles, PvE, Opinion, Sandbox, Crafting, The Repopulation Writing about early access games is the suck. I guess it's something I'll have to get over, though, given how early access is now launch, how alpha is the new beta, and how gamers are lining up to pay big money for ideas. With that out of the way, let's talk a bit about my first steps in The Repopulation. It's an appropriately ambitious sci-fi sandbox from scrappy indie studio Above & Beyond Technologies. As you might expect, it's somewhat rough at the moment. I see it carving out a successful niche for itself in the future, though. Continue reading Massively hands-on: Let's talk about The Repopulation

But aside from the three new dungeons, the World of Darkness, the previewed trials, the new quests -- whew! -- there's even more new stuff tucked away into the patch. For example, there's a new form of PvP match added to the game, which pits alliances against one another in a straight deathmatch. There's a new mystery trial unlocked through the main storyline. There's the new Aetherial Wheel furnishing, which allows free companies to charge up their company credits through alternate means. That's not even counting system adjustments or usability improvements or the items not previewed but expected such as new hairstyles.
