Take-Two: Think GTA 5 is offensive? Don't buy it

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 03:30 PM PST

Take-Two Interactive boss Karl Slatoff is disappointed in the Australian retailers that recently pulled Grand Theft Auto V from shelves in response to a consumer petition.

Speaking at the  BMO Capital Markets 2014 Technology & Digital Media Conference today, Slatoff said it's completely understandable "for someone to not want to buy a piece of content ... If you don't like it and it's offensive to you, then you don't buy it.

"But for a person or a group of people to try to make that decision for millions of people --We have 34 million people who bought Grand Theft Auto, and if [the petitioners] had their way, none of those people would be able to buy Grand Theft Auto. And that really just flies in the face of everything that free society is based on."

Slatoff went on to criticize the decision as slippery slope to limiting freedom of expression, despite asserting it had essentially no impact on Take-Two's business.  At the end of the day though, it's not something you want because it's a poor leadership decision."

Amiibogeddon update: Toys "R" Us no longer carrying the 'holy trinity'

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 12:00 PM PST

We've yet to get a straight answer from Nintendo about the Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, and Marth Amiibo's collective status on the endangered toy species list. First we hear they are discontinued, then we hear that no Amiibos have been discontinued, then we hear that they're "likely" gone. If you've got Amiibo on the brain, it's enough to make you lose your marbles, or if you've been re-branded by Nintendo, your Amiibarbles.

Being the powerful Amiibo-truth seeker that I am, I headed to my local Toys "R" us to ask if the "holy trinity" were still active in their system. According to a helpful Toys "R" Us clerk who asked to remain anonymous, Toys "R" Us will not be stocking the Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, and Marth Amiibo's under their current SKU ever again. He even let me take pictures of the SKU listings on his scan gun and showed me the little "X" on each one that means that particular product is dead forever.

I already found my Wii Fit trainer Amiibo and now I feel bad for all the people who are missing out. It's definitely the most well made out of the four I have. I'll be sure to bring it to local smash tourneys so people can bow to it, kiss its feet, and pay tribute to its spiritual significance in whatever other ways they feel are right.

Bonus mission for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel ties into Tales

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 11:30 AM PST

This one might be a bit tough to talk about without people crying foul for spoilers, despite that the promotional material made publicly available divulges the information. Suffice it to say, if you haven't finished Borderlands 2, played Tales from the Borderlands, or seen anything on the Internet about the two, you should stop reading now (and probably stop clicking on articles about Borderlands, yeah?). There, I think I used enough space that nothing important will show up in the preview text.

When Tales from the Borderlands was first announced, we caught a glimpse of a hologram of Handsome Jack, the now-dead antagonist of Borderlands 2. Later, writer Anthony Burch clarified that "Handsome Jack is dead and he's not coming back, but there are contingencies." Most who could read between the lines took that to mean that he implanted his mind into an artificial intelligence, which we see in Tales.

To give more background on the origin of that AI, a bonus mission is being added to Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. It involves Dr. Nakayama attempting to immortalize his idol (because of course it would). The mission should be available on December 16, when the next round of DLC releases.

It is not immediately clear from the Gearbox blog whether this bonus mission will be part of the $10 Holodome Pack (DLC 2) or part of the free Ultimate Vault Hunter update. Destructoid has reached out to 2K for clarification.

Naughty Dog milks The Last of Us with more DLC

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 11:00 AM PST

The promise of the subject line was alluring; the email's contents utterly deflating. Deadly new additions to The Last of Us multiplayer, Naughty Dog promised. Would it be a three-way firefight between Fireflies, hunters and infected, the multiplayer mode of my dreams?

"Nah," said the puckish pup. "Have some more guns and hats instead."

  • Special Executions: New executions for nine weapon categories, each costing $1.
  • Tactical Weapons Bundle: Four new toys for $3.
  • Risk Management and Survival Skills Bundle: Five new perks for $4.
  • Misfit Head Item Bundle: More hats for $7.
  • Gesture Packs 2 and 3: Body language at $2.50 a pop.

Sigh. I'll probably check out these tactical weapons. Dammit, I'm a sucker for a crossbow.

Mega Man 2's OST spiced up with Castlevania III's audio chip

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 10:00 AM PST

[Dtoid alumn megaStryke likes Mega Man more than anyone else in the world. Shh, don't tell Chris Carter! --Mr Andy Dixon]

Come back in time with me for a minute!

Almost two years ago to the day, I shared a fan arrange album called Mega Man 3 Remade. Produced by chiptune artist RushJet1, it was exactly as the title said: the entire Mega Man 3 soundtrack completely remade from scratch. The hook is that not only are the files playable on NES hardware, they also employed the VRC6, an audio chip manufactured by Konami for use in a small handful of titles, namely the Japanese release of Castlevania III, that expanded the available sound channels from five to eight.

But RushJet1 didn't simply stick to the same melodies; he punched them up with his signature style, adding entirely original breakdowns or switching up tempos. The results were both familiar and foreign -- I admit there were a few misses -- but from the responses to my post, a lot of you really dug the project as a whole.

The album was followed up last year with Mega Man Remade, a reimagining of (duh!) the inaugural installment in the franchise. Sadly, I had already departed Destructoid by then, so I couldn't spread the good news with my soul brothers and sisters. I swore that I wouldn't let such an injustice happen again!

Sure, I'll take a free copy of SimCity 2000 on Origin

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 09:30 AM PST

I never thought I'd have this many games attached to my Origin account, but here we are with yet another On the House offer from Electronic Arts I might as well claim. You know, just to have.

SimCity 2000 is free (read: free to keep, not free to play for a limited time) so get on that.

I think the last time I seriously played this was in, gosh, middle school? It's been a while.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X coming to Steam next week thanks to Dovetail

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 09:00 AM PST

Through a licensing deal with Microsoft, Train Simulator studio Dovetail Games will release Microsoft Flight Simulator X on Steam on December 18, 2014 "at a spectacular introductory price."

It's sad Microsoft couldn't be bothered to put the beloved title on a widely-used platform like Steam years ago, but that's our Microsoft. Dovetail Games says the new Steam edition of FSX has updated multiplayer functionality and Windows 8.1 support and, hah, there's also promise of "a range of add-ons" arriving next year. That's our DLC-loving Dovetail, right on cue.

Flight Simulator X is one of those all-time greats I couldn't get into partially because I'm inept and partially because it requires investment even if you just want to screw around and crash planes, but don't let that stop you. Plenty of people swear by it and for good reason.

Not-so-final stand: There's more Battlefield 4 DLC on the way

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 08:30 AM PST

It looked like Battlefield 4 was going to go out on a relative high note with the Final Stand DLC, but when it comes to naming in this industry, "final" doesn't have to mean the end.

"With [Final Stand] released, we hope and believe that you will enjoy it together with the rest of the game for a long time," wrote the studio. "However, there is one thing we want to assure you: there is more content coming for Battlefield 4." (Did we need that reassurance?)

DICE isn't giving specifics about future add-ons today, though it is running a poll asking which if any maps from prior Battlefield games you'd like to see reimagined in BF4.

So long as we're revisiting old ideas, I'd still like that sequel to 2142.

Review in Progress: Destiny: The Dark Below

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 08:00 AM PST

Destiny was released earlier this year, and like many hyped games, it failed to deliver on its promises. The good news? It was still a well crafted shooter, and practically everything involving the actual gameplay was excellent. In fact, I find it hard to go back to other shooters now -- that's how good Destiny feels.

Unfortunately, the folks over at Bungie made a number of design choices that prevent players from consistently having fun. There was also backpedaling over the past few months -- some of which led to changes to the raid -- that brought even more glitches alongside of the update.

So far in my testing, The Dark Below plays out similarly. The core of the game is still intact, but there's a lot of weird choices that prevent it from reaching its potential.

Sunset Overdrive bounces to a filthy oil rig for first DLC

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 07:30 AM PST

Insomniac Games has detailed Sunset Overdrive's first add-on, and there are some pronunciation problems clouding up the reveal. The Mystery of Mooil Rig is the name, and how would one go about saying that? "Moy-il?" "Moo-oil," like a lubricant for your cows? There's even some discrepancy between Insomniac's community manager and Xbox's Major Nelson.

Regardless, we know that the add-on will take place on a giant oil rig, and there'll be some investigating to do after a distress signal goes off. There likely won't be much sleuthing necessary, as the employee turf war and giant aquatic mutants look to obviously be the cause of concern.

Apart from the standard inclusion of additional missions and challenges, Mooil Rig will also feature two new maneuvers -- Water Dive, and Water Slam Bounce; they're both exactly what they sound like. The DLC hasn't been priced yet, but it'll release on December 23. That's when you can channel your inner-BP and make a big ol' mess of the sea.

Twitch Xbox One app adds 'multiplayer K/D ratio' filter, past broadcast viewing

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 06:30 AM PST

The Xbox One Twitch app has been updated and now console users can watch archived streams, manually select the quality level of broadcasts (!), follow specific games instead of just channels, and search for people. But what's this about a kill/death ratio filter?

There's now advanced filtering that pull real-time data from Xbox Live to let you find, for instance, streams based on multiplayer win percentage in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, or whether someone is playing single-player or multiplayer free roam in Forza Horizon 2 and even what class of car they're driving. Some of this stuff is overkill, but I'm not going to complain about options.

Xbox to make amends for Street Fighter V exclusivity

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 06:00 AM PST

Over the weekend, Capcom announced Street Fighter V for PlayStation 4 and PC. Naturally, some folks were upset the fighting game wouldn't be coming to their preferred platform. Others were curious about Xbox boss boss Phil Spencer's take on the reveal.

Spencer's remarks recall statements he made in August, when Rise of the Tomb Raider was revealed as a timed Xbox exclusive. Back then, the executive conceded Microsoft had a hole in its portfolio and the deal presented a good business opportunity for the company.

"I don't want anybody to be happy that somebody else isn't playing the game. I don't look at the war that way. I just want gaming on Xbox to be great," Spencer said. "This wasn't an attack against anybody else. It was an opportunity that came up for us that fit really well."

It'll be interesting to see how Microsoft makes amends for the lack of Street Fighter V on Xbox.

Attention all masochists: Alien: Isolation has a Nightmare difficulty now

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 05:45 AM PST

Anyone that's tried tackling Alien: Isolation on the toughest difficulty knows that it's a painstakingly hard endeavor. There's little room for error, as the alien is quite adept at adapting to your strategies. As if it needed it, Creative Assembly added an even harder setting to the game.

In a post on Alien: Isolation's website, Creative Assembly unveiled Nightmare difficulty -- a challenge that's only for "players with extremely strong dispositions." The new mode saddles the player with several disadvantages such as a broken and unreliable motion tracker, reduced resources, and no indicator of health or ammo. Most importantly, it increases the alien's abilities substantially, allowing it to adapt faster, give it heightened senses, be more aggressive, and never give the player a second chance.

Conversely, another new mode was added that does the exact opposite. Novice scales everything back and gives the player more breathing room. Many of the changes were made to "dumb down" the alien, but the effects encompass all areas of gameplay. This is probably the new setting you'll want to try if you don't hate yourself.

Tekken 7 lead annoyed you don't like the catgirl so she's Asia/Europe-exclusive

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 05:30 AM PST

Yesterday, Tekken 7 revealed a new character with cat ears and a Japanese pop idol aesthetic designed by Fire Emblem: Awakening and No More Heroes character artist Yusuke Kozaki. Our own Destructoid's Steven Hansen called her, "anime as hell." Part of Hansen's future plan for the game was becoming a good Lucky Chloe player to upset the sort of folks that would be upset about being mercilessly defeated by her.

Seems those sort of peoples' response to Lucky Chloe, however, has barred her from the Western release of the fighter. Or at least majorly annoyed its lead. Katsuhiro Harada, chief developer of the Tekken series, responded to a Twitter comment directing him to a NeoGAF discussion of Lucky Chloe.

"By the way, Are you 'Western' only one bulletin board? Hello small world. I'll make muscular & skinhead character for you," Harada jabbed. "Remember, I said We've more new characters and She is ONE on THEM."

Microsoft is the publisher of Rise of the Tomb Raider

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 05:15 AM PST

Ever since Microsoft's gamescom exclusivity reveal, there's been plenty of speculation about the state of Rise of the Tomb Raider. Although it was soon found out to be a timed-exclusive, there are still many uncertainties surrounding the deal. A large detail surfaced today that might give some indication as to how everything will play out.

According to a tweet from Xbox marketing head Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft is the publisher of Rise of the Tomb Raider. IP owner Square Enix later confirmed this and added "Microsoft has always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and they will get behind this game with more support across development, marketing and retail than ever before, which we believe will be a step in continuing to build the Tomb Raider franchise as one of the biggest in gaming."

It's still up in the air as to what other platforms Rise of the Tomb Raider will come to. Given the fact that Microsoft is publishing the game and likely taking care of marketing and distribution, it's reasonable to assume that PC only is more feasible than PC and PS4. But, Microsoft hasn't yet given any clarification yet, and will likely keep attention focused on its consoles as long as possible.

New Bloodborne trailer shows off co-op, tons of blood

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST

Bloodborne is probably my most anticipated game of 2015, and this trailer is just cementing that choice. You'll get a good look at the deliciously bloody gameplay, including some full-on co-op portions that look like a ton of fun.

I'm loving pretty much everything I see. Unknown depths to drop and plunge into, enemies jumping out from dark corners, long steps with credible threats at the top of them. The game just looks beautiful. I'll just have to get used to the lack of blocking, since sword and board was mostly my jam in Souls games.

Nintendo: Wii U GameCube adapter 'has not been discontinued'

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 04:30 AM PST

The Wii U GameCube controller adapter has been hard to get hold of, with the last remnant orders seemingly being cancelled by online retailers. However,  Nintendo of Europe gave a statement to Nintendo Life assuring the adapter has not been discontinued.

Isn't all of this fun.

"We would like to reassure you that GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U has not been discontinued by Nintendo of Europe and we are doing everything we possibly can to meet the demand which is currently outstripping supply.

We are unable to comment specifically on individual retailer stock levels and as such we ask customers to contact their local retailers directly regarding their availability of this product. We would however like to reassure you that we are working hard to ensure that additional stock can be made available and delivered to retailers."

PlayStation Experience was my favorite convention of the year

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST

I've been to a lot of videogame conventions this year. From the relatively small BitSummit to the monstrosity that is gamescom, I've pretty much seen them all. I didn't think this past weekend's trip to Las Vegas would result in me saying this, but for better and for worse, I think Sony's PlayStation Experience was my favorite convention of the year.

Part of what makes that so surprising is that the event itself was surprising. Nobody really knew what to expect from the PlayStation Experience. How big would it be? What would the booths look like? Would third-party publishers show up in force? Would it be a ghost town? No one knew.

The doors to the show floor opened up just as Saturday morning's keynote ended, and we finally got a glimpse at the mysterious PlayStation Experience. At first, it was bustling. Everyone coming off the high of the keynote, and they just wanted to play some games. Attendance was probably at its peak in those moments. It didn't feel packed, but there was certainly a steady flow of people at all times.

Suikoden II launches today on PlayStation Network

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 03:00 AM PST

Suikoden II, one of the best RPGs ever, makes its PlayStation Network debut today.

Somewhere out there, sullen eBay sharks are shouting at the heavens right about now. Dreams of financing their children's college funds with that old used copy of Suikoden II are dying faster than mayflies. You know, the bugs that only live for a day.

Once upon a time, Suikoden II could have netted them buckets of doubloons. Those Internet profiteers, with their extensive knowledge of supply and demand curves, kenned Konami only printed so many of the damn things, and weaponized that insight for Internet profiteering. And they would have kept doing it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids.

The people called for aid, and Konami have answered. After years of listening to fans plead for a re-release, the benevolent publisher has finally decided it wants your money. Starting today, you'll be able to download Suikoden II to your PS3, PSP and Vita for a mere $10. Not bad, not bad...

Grab some free tunes from the Dungeonmans soundtrack

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 02:30 AM PST

I spent a lot of time listening to Hitoshi Sakimoto's work with the soundtrack for Final Fantasy Tactics. Heck, it is still in my rotation for background music during board game nights. From the sound of it, Andrew "zircon" Aversa did the same, as he composed the soundtrack for the Kickstarter-funded roguelike Dungeonmans taking inspiration from Sakimoto.

We have some exclusive tracks available for download. "Cimmerian Cavern" is subdued, and like a musty cave, it almost feels damp itself. "The Tower Invincible" evokes a more adventurous feeling, like a song played by minstrels as knights march into battle. Check them out below, or head to OverClocked for the full album.

Nintendo 3DS firmware takes aim at homebrewers

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 02:00 AM PST

Nintendo has released a new Nintendo 3DS update, which includes the following features:

  • A Shuffle Favorites feature has been added under Change Theme in HOME Menu Settings. Users can choose multiple themes and have their theme change when the system is left in Sleep Mode from the HOME Menu or turned on after being off
  • Available software updates can now be downloaded from the HOME Menu
  • Users can now capture screenshots with both the upper and lower screens included
  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.

According to various reports, the "overall system stability" improvements include a roadblock to any would-be homebrewers out there. The update is said to target a recently discovered exploit in Ubisoft's Cubic Ninja, which allows 3DS hardware to run unofficial software. Nintendo patching holes in its security should come as a shock to no one, but the move still probably comes as a disappointment to the homebrew community.

You can carry over your progress to the Destiny sequel

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 01:00 AM PST

Many people have misunderstood the "$500 million" and "10 year plan" comments that Activision has made in the past in regards to Destiny. Those numbers encompass the entire franchise over time, not just one game.

That plan includes multiple games, one of which is Destiny 2, which is coming at some point in the future. Speaking to IGN, Bungie's David Dague confirmed that player progress would continue throughout the sequel, to allow an "attachment" to your character.

That's great news, but hopefully Bungie will fix some problems with the existing game first. Stay tuned for a full look at The Dark Below expansion soon.

That Sons of Anarchy game finally has a name and a platform

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 12:00 AM PST

Sons of Anarchy is coming to a close this week, and it's been a wild seven seasons. While I could have done without the entire Belfast saga in Season 3, series creator Kurt Sutter has consistently kept me entertained for over half a decade with the antics of Jax Teller and crew.

We've been hearing a lot about a potential game after the series wraps up, and now we know that it will be called Sons of Anarchy: The Prospect, and will debut in early 2015 on mobile devices. No screenshots or gameplay details have been given other than the fact that it's an episodic experience developed by Orpheus Interactive and Silverback Games.

A "Prospect" is what a potential club member is called, and you will likely take control of that character as you explore a new chapter of SOA. I would also venture to guess that it will be an adventure game of some sort.

Completing the new questline in Destiny is complicated, here's how

After booting up the new Destiny expansion The Dark Below this morning, I completed the three new story missions. Upon finishing the questline I saw that the weekly Heroic and Nightfall missions were blacked out, telling me to "complete the new quests."

Utterly confused, I ended up doing a few more bounties for Eris, the new NPC, and found out how to unlock them. It's not straightforward, but here's how to do it!

Where is our Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- review?

Posted: 08 Dec 2014 06:00 PM PST

As of right now, the embargo on Guilty Gear Xrd has lifted -- we can talk about it, and hot damn is there a lot to say. The game is beautiful, extremely crisp, and the gameplay is just as good as it always was. While some cast members are mysteriously absent (like Johnny or Baiken) the newcomers bring a lot to the meta-game, and new mechanics are added on top of everything like Roman Cancels, Dust Attacks, and Gatling Combos.

What's really crazy is how much like an anime Xrd looks. A lot of the cutscenes are actually in-engine, and even some of the supers and Instant Kills look cinematic. Even after a few weeks of testing this game still blows me away -- especially so since the hardcore spirit of the series has been preserved. It looks just as good as the videos.

There's also a bit more here for solo players than normal, including a full-on arcade mode with individual stories, and a storybook-like option that lets the conclusion of this chapter play out. It's not going to win any writing awards, but anime fans and Guilty Gear enthusiasts will love the fact that there's more world building here.

Our full review isn't quite ready though, since we haven't been able to test the netcode at all. The lobbies look great. There's plenty of spectator potential and a whole host of options for ranked and unranked play -- hell, there's even PS3 and PS4 Cross-Play. But we haven't been able to get in yet and give it a shake, so we'll wait until we can do that first.
