Father of videogames Ralph Baer passes away at 92

Posted: 07 Dec 2014 01:00 PM PST

Ralph Baer was an electronics and engineering pioneer who many credit with the invention of modern videogames. This footage of Baer playing an early iteration of Pong on The Brown Box (a prototype of the Magnavox Odyssey) dates all the way back to 1969. Baer stayed active in the electronics and gaming communities that he helped give birth to throughout his life. He received the National Medal of Technology from President George W. Bush in 2006 and later payed a visit to the Choice Provisions studios to check out the Pong-inspired Bit.Trip BEAT in 2009.

The latest entry in the Smash Bros. series was released a few weeks ago and it features an Assist Trophy based on Pong. I'm sure that Mr. Baer would be happy to know that his game is being experienced by millions of new minds through that small inclusion, and that he changed the face of an entire medium forever. Not bad for a life's work.

Looks like those Amiibos aren't really discontinued

Posted: 07 Dec 2014 12:00 PM PST

Maybe I'm just being overly cautious, but it's almost impossible to know what to believe on the internet, so take this with a grain of salt. A screengrab of a email from Nintendo of America's David Young has popped up on NeoGAF stating that the Marth, Villager, and Wii Fit Trainer Amiibos have not been discontinued. I've met David a few times, and that email reads a lot like how he talks, but who knows.

We've reached out to Nintendo for comment and hope to hear from them as soon as tomorrow. We're also hearing grumbles that shipments of Wii U Gamecube controller adapters will be heading to stores alongside Wave two of the Smash Bros. Amiibos in a few weeks. Here's to hoping that's true.

Most importantly, charge your battery Erini. You're making me nervous.

Mercedes Carrera comments on the charity stream hubbub

Posted: 07 Dec 2014 11:00 AM PST

A few hours ago, I wrote a story about how the AbleGamers suffered a DDoS attack after pulling out of a collaboration with adult film star Mercedes Carrera on a charity live stream. Some of you thought I was implied that Mercedes was responsible for the DDoS. That wasn't my intention. I reached out to Ms. Carrera to make that clear, and to ask her if she had any comment on the situation. You'll find her comment below in quotes.

Omitted with her permission is a link she provided to findings from an anonymous internet source who believes that he has evidence that AbleGamer's was not DDoS'ed. While this anonymous internet user may very well be correct, I do not feel confident enough in this source to link to it at this time.

Thanks again to Ms. Carrera for her comment.

Dear devs, Stop it with tutorials all the way through the game

Posted: 07 Dec 2014 08:00 AM PST

“THA'S HOW YOU RIDE A CARRRRRAGOR!"

Yeah, thanks asshole. I've already done this like two dozen times. You might have noticed I rode up to your mission marker ON a Caragor.

“WHEN UN' ORC IS DOWN, THA'S WHEN YOUR CARRRAGOR CAN POUNCE ON EM!”

DIE IN A FIRE.

I loved Shadow of Mordor. You know, unlike some people. I could ignore the generic revenge-driven plot, put up with Gollum's shenanigans, and embrace the hell out of the unique cast of orcs the game generated for me. Hell, I even loved the Arkham-style combat and the kill-crazy orc murder sprees it enabled. I'm not sick of that brand of carnage yet, not by a longshot.

But the game committed one unforgivable sin – It was still tutorializing basic mechanics well into the back half of the game. Every time it happened it was enough to make me want to pitch the game into Mount Doom's lava basement.

Best Buy opens up pre-orders for Meta Knight amiibo

Posted: 07 Dec 2014 06:21 AM PST

During my day one amiibo hunting trip, I noticed that Best Buy wasn't particularly on the ball. Multiple stores in my area didn't even stock Wii Fit Trainer or Villager, and Marth came up as "Martha" on one of the Best Buy inventory sheets. While Toys"R"Us and GameStop had their exclusive amiibo pre-orders ready day one, Best Buy's listing was nowhere to be found.

Thankfully, I was just informed that Meta Knight, their exclusive amiibo, is up for pre-order. You can go through the process online and in-store, and if you're a collector I suggest you do so soon. After all, we've seen how limited these things can be.

Sup Holmes goes live with the creators of Pocket Rumble

Posted: 07 Dec 2014 06:20 AM PST

[Update: Thanks for watching everybody! Since the stream is over, I put up the Pocket Rumble episode of Two Best Friends up there in their place. Rumor has it a storm is coming...]

Capcom recently announced Street Fighter V, a game that you'd think a lot of people would be excited about. Instead, the general reaction seemed to be "looks a lot like Street Fighter IV, a game that I already bought four times". Street Fighter fans seem to be hungry for something other than just a slightly prettier new version of the same old thing.

Maybe Pocket Rumble will be more to their liking. It draws inspiration more from Neo Geo Pocket Color fighters like SNK Vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium and SNK Gal Fighters than any particular Street Fighter release, but it's still a fresh and familiar take on traditional 2D fighting games. It's in the last couple days of it's kickstarter campaign right now, with just a few thousand to go until it's fully funded, so now is the time to get in there and back it if you want in on some perks.

We'll be talking to the developers of the game today at 4pm EST about fighting game design, Pocket Rumble's generous host of guest characters, and a lot more. I hope to see you there.

AbleGamers backs out of charity event after reading it will 'weaponize porn'

Posted: 07 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST

[Update: Looks like AbleGamers' site is back up.]

[Update 2: I asked AbleGamers to comment on those questioning if they were DDoS'ed or if their site went down because of unusually high traffic. The told me "Three different representatives from our web service provider said that DDoS was what appeared to be happening. We do not have a server with DDoS protection because it costs an extra $500 at the company we currently use. I'm not sure what proof they want beyond the word of our web service provider. I do not know how to provide proof of this beyond what we are being told." I also have a comment from Mercedes Carrera coming up which will be reported in a separate post.]

[Update 3: AbleGamer's has gone on to state that "a phone representative [from our web service provider] said that there was a block of 10 IP addresses responsible. The one listed [in the image] below was the main address". We've attached a redacted copy of the image provided. We've also obtained comment from Mercedes Carrera regarding the situation.]

It's really hard to know who to trust on the internet these days, what with so many groups working to subvert and manipulate each other for their own ends. Case in point, AbleGamers were recently approached to partner with porn star Mercedes Carrera (seen above) to air a charity live stream to help "grant assistive technology to people with disabilities enabling a greater quality of life utilizing the power of video games."

A little later, AbelGamers saw a post on Reddit about the event was "a GamerGate stream" meant to "weaponize porn" and would only be a charity event "for now". That was enough to get AbleGamers to walk away from the event, though the organizer of the stream later apologized to them for the way the event was represented on Reddit, stating that they "do not wish to link GamerGate to the charity drive".

Doesn't seem like that big of a deal, right? As I've been saying for months, GamerGate is a flag, not a movement or an ideology. It's a flag that means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. If you don't want to be associated with a particular flag, or with the "culture wars" in general, then good for you. Nothing to be upset about either way.

All the same, AbleGamer's site was immediately DDoS'ed after they posted their official statement on the matter, bringing their servers down and effectively silencing their attempt to make their position clear. Somebody is pretty angry at them, I reckon. We'll see if the same thing happens to Dtoid today, as we've chosen to reproduce AbleGamer's statement below. Read it while you still can.

Katamari creator teams with former EA designer for Wattam

Posted: 07 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST

Wattam is a new PS4 exclusive from Robin Hunicke (Boom Blocks, My Sims) and Keita Takahashi (Katamari Damacy, Noby Noby Boy, Tenya Wanya Teens). The game was inspired by Takahashi's experiences playing with his two year old son, as they wondered "what if all toys lived, and connected by themselves?" Sounds a lot like Amiibo and Skylanders, though knowing Takahashi, it's unlikely that Wattam will end up going in that direction.

We'll be finding out more about Wattam when 2015 rolls around. Hopefully Funomena doesn't stretch out the reveals for too long.

Hot Sticky Mess is the 'hardest' Electronic Super Joy DLC to date

Posted: 07 Dec 2014 03:30 AM PST

[Update: The levels in Hot Sticky Mess were designed by Don Nguyen and Cassie Chui, not Michael Todd and Cassie Chui as originally reported. Apologizes for the error.]

Electronic Super Joy is a happy, scary game about a buttless man who works for Pope Boris the Sexy. It's quite an experience -- tough but fair, liberal but conservative, hard but soft, big but small. That's a lot of buts for a game about a being buttless.

It's coming to consoles next year, which will hopefully expose the game to a lot of wanting, happy faces. To tide you over in the meantime, creator Michael Todd and designer Cassie Chui have released Hot Sticky Mess, a load of Steam DLC which offers the stiffest Electronic Super Joy challenge yet.

If you've picked up some of the sexual innuendo present in this post and you're worried that this game is about semen, worry no more. According to Cassie "... thats the joke, but it's really something else entirely". Hopefully it's the The Stuff. We'll have to play it to find out.

Megan Fox talks Lego Universe, pigeon racism and nonviolent gun play

Posted: 07 Dec 2014 02:30 AM PST

[Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on Youtube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.]

Last week on Sup Holmes we welcomed Megan Fox of Glass Bottom Games to the studio. Megan is a powerhouse of imagination and business acumen. We chatted about her time working for Lego on Lego Universe, how your portfolio is more important than your degree when applying for work in the business, the right and wrong way to do Steam sales, the non-intrusive themes of race and sexuality in her upcoming game Hot Tin Roof and a lot more.

Thanks again to Megan for hanging out with us, and tune in today at 4pm EST when we welcome the developers of Rocket Rumble to the program.

What would you want out of an Amiibo focused game?

Posted: 07 Dec 2014 01:30 AM PST

The jury is still out on the success of Amiibo. Although certain figures have pretty much sold out, we don't know if that's because they were "incredibly popular" or just "made scarce by design".

Regardless, it's clear that the internet likes talking about Amiibo, and we know for sure that Nintendo is going to follow through with at least 3 more waves of figures. Chances are that Nintendo will eventually try capitalize on that hefty Amiibo investment (Amiibestment) with a game that hinges on Amiibo interaction as a central part of the experience. Smash Bros. only uses them in a couple of modes. In other games, they only work to unlock unessential items. Nintendo would be wise to do more than that with their experimental new money making game in 2015.

What do you think they should do? A game that requires you to buy Amiibo in order to play might turn off a lot of people, but at the same time, Nintendo has to make the figures an integral part of the design in order to give them value. Maybe a sequel to Nintendo Land that has Minecraft-style world building elements, allowing you to create your own unique attractions/structures with parts provided by playable Amiibo characters? Maybe a Pokemon-style collect-a-thon except with an all-star Nintendo cast, where scanning an Amiibo adds them to your party? The only thing I'm pretty sure that Nintendo wont do is a straight up clone of Skylanders. Beyond that, the possibilities are endless.

Let your imagination run wild, children!
