PS4's faceplate game cannot touch the New 3DS Posted: 06 Dec 2014 11:00 AM PST Stuck with a boring PS4 because you can't afford or missed the 20th Anniversary one, or you bought the black one before the white one existed? Sony's got your back. In limited quantities. For a fee. It starts with small quantities of The Order and LittleBigPlanet 3 faceplates for $25 a pop. They'll be on sale at the Sony Store. A bit gauche for me, but hopefully there will be some cool ones down the line. The video above shows you how to pop them on.
MLB 15 The Show hits PS4, PS3, Vita on March 31 Posted: 06 Dec 2014 10:00 AM PST MLB 15 The Show launches March 31, 2015, Sony announced today. "MLB 15 The Show offers a renewed focus on player emotion and personality," Sony San Diego's Chris Cutliff wrote in a post over at the PlayStation Blog. "Our vision to deliver the most realistic baseball game doesn’t stop there. For the first time ever, The Show will feature licensed equipment from the most recognizable brands in baseball." It also has Puig on the cover, which this Dodgers fan thinks is pretty much the best thing ever!
Sony Santa Monica is working on a new God of War Posted: 06 Dec 2014 09:44 AM PST At the PlayStation Experience, God of War II director Cory Barlog confirmed a new God of War is in development. Sony Santa Monica joked coyly, tweeting, "Don't tell anyone what @corybarlog just said," before following up, quoting Barlog, "Yes, we are making another God of War." The last entry was last year's God of War: Ascension. Perhaps we'll see just what Sony Santa Monica thinks it can do with the series at E3 this year?

And while last week saw the sad departure of our long-time host Aaron "Mxy" Yost from both the podcast and the site, tonight we're pleased to welcome to the show our two new permanent co-hosts: Bill Platt and Occams Electric Toothbrush! Bill and Occams have been prominent members of the Dtoid community for years now, and both were promoted to official community staff recently, so adding their unique voices to the cast was a no-brainer! | Nintendo reportedly discontinues Marth, Wii Fit Trainer & Villager amiibo Posted: 06 Dec 2014 06:50 AM PST Canadian videogame retailer Video Games Plus has reported that, "Nintendo has officially discontinued Marth, Wii Fit Trainer & Villager amibos [sic]," at least for the North American market. There has already been a shortage when it comes to folks trying to find these three in stores. According to the retailer, "We tried re-ordering all 3 from our official Nintendo distributor and after them checking with Nintendo on availability, they told us those 3 characters are officially discontinued by Nintendo believe it or not." If that's the case, better get yours now so you can sell them for $100 later. We've reached out to Nintendo for comment. |
Persona 5 is definitely coming in 2015, you guys Posted: 06 Dec 2014 06:30 AM PST During the PlayStation Experience keynote in Las Vegas today, Atlus USA confirmed that Persona 5 will indeed be dropping on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in 2015. We pretty much knew this already, but official announcements from the publisher are always great for breathing a sigh of relief. You know, juuuuust in case something screwy happened and we weren't so sure the game was coming anymore. Because I'll be the first one to tell you I would have been absolutely heartbroken. Now I can get back to counting down the days for the next sweet, sweet Persona title that'll come just as I've gotten my fresh MegaTen ink.
Drawn to Death: A PS4 arena shooter from David Jaffe Posted: 06 Dec 2014 06:22 AM PST "They said I could cuss." Oh, Jaffe. Jaffe's (Twisted Metal, God of War) new studio's PS4 exclusive (in conjunction with Sony San Diego) is Drawn to Death, a third-person arena shooter set in a highschool kid's violent notebook. That should get someone sent to a principal's office. There are a number of different characters and some oddball weapons, like a dragon stuffed with gasoline breathing fire. Oh, teens. That everything--levels, guns, characters--comes from some teen's messed up imagination could make for a lot of wild, interesting stuff. Drawn to Death is playable at PlayStation Experience, but in pre-alpha, so the team will be impromptu focus-testing at the show.
Fat Princess Adventures is coming to the PS4 Posted: 06 Dec 2014 06:10 AM PST Sony has announced that Fat Princess Adventures is the next piece of the Fat Princess saga. It will appear on the PlayStation 4, and no real release date was given. It seems like it's no longer solely based on castle defense is is now a more Gauntlet-like affair. Could be fun. I'm surprised Sony is still keeping the Fat Princess IP alive. I actually quite enjoyed the first game and still play it occasionally, and I hope the new release on the PS4 will spark that fire.
Not enough gorgeous 2D games? Skytorn coming to PS4 Posted: 06 Dec 2014 06:08 AM PST Gorgeous, procedurally generated Metroidvania, basically. It's joining an enormous group of games, yet they all seem to have a distinctive enough art style that I get excited for all of them. Though I'd rather play them on Vita than PS4, probably. Oh well. Skytorn looks lovely.
Final Fantasy VII Returns announced for PS4 Posted: 06 Dec 2014 06:02 AM PST Square Enix has announced a new project at the PlayStation Experience -- Final Fantasy VII Returns. It will apparently be a release of the PC version of the game with upscaled visuals. Again, this does not seem to be a remake of any kind, as all of the footage shown was in the old PlayStation 1 style. This is despite the fact that it's on the PS3 and Vita already as a PSOne Classic. It's coming in spring 2015. I literally went from gasping for breath at the announcement to "ohhhh" in mere seconds.
Sci-fi 2D platformer Orphan looks like a mashup of Limbo and H.G. Wells Posted: 06 Dec 2014 06:00 AM PST Let’s go ahead and get this out of the way, shall we? Yes, Orphan immediately brings to mind Limbo. That’s perfectly fine by me, though. I have enough room left in my heart for more games that can leverage the delightfully dark aesthetic that’s now synonymous with Playdead’s moody puzzle platformer; so long as the titles in question manage to stay true to their own vision and don’t attempt to simply reskin what they drew inspiration from in the first place. This seems to be the case in Tennessee-based Windy Hill Studio’s, sci-fi oriented 2D platformer, Orphan. While it shares certain visual qualities with the now iconic indie darling, Windy Hill's project looks to bring more action to the table, demonstrating some basic combat elements as the mysterious young boy wields a laser to fend off the attacking mechanical horde. While the teaser -- by its teasing nature -- doesn’t offer a great deal of information as to what’s going on in the game, it does indicate that the world as we know it has been destroyed after some sort of hostile alien invasion, leaving survivors to fend for themselves as they are hunted down for extermination. Artsy post-apocalyptic 2D platformer? Yes, please! Currently, the title’s seeking Steam Greenlight approval, so if you like what Windy Hill is putting together here, why not take a minute out of your day to throw them an upvote? Coincidentally, it’s looking like this one will also be coming to Kickstarter for funding at some point down the road, so we’ll be sure to report on that when the time comes. Enjoy the teaser, and if you'd like to learn a bit more about the game or the studio who's producing it, you can find more information on the title's official website.
Steal your enemies limbs and use them in Severed Posted: 06 Dec 2014 05:57 AM PST I still get giddy over Sir Dan in MediEvil using his own arm as a starting weapon. In Severed, you'll hack up enemies and use their body parts to make you even stronger. And, like Guacamelee, it's stylish as heck.
Tons of ports and existing games are coming to the Vita Posted: 06 Dec 2014 05:43 AM PST The Vita is getting a lot of games soon -- it's just that most of them aren't actually exclusive or new. Announced today at the PlayStation Experience are ports for The Banner Saga, Resident Evil Revelations 2, Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions, Bastion, Super Time Force, Grim Fandango, Towerfall, and Octodad. You'll also see the release of the highly coveted Suikoden series, with both 1 and 2 hitting the Vita next week. This is in addition to the announcements for Day of the Tentacle and Shovel Knight. When the Vita does get the occasional exclusive game it's actually pretty neat -- I've been playing Freedom Wars a lot lately. Where's my Gravity Rush 2 announcement Sony?
Yakuza 5 is finally coming west! Posted: 06 Dec 2014 05:35 AM PST Somebody pinch me! Yakuza 5 is coming to PlayStation 3 in North America next year, Sony announced today at the PlayStation Experience. This is definitely better late than never! It sounds like Sony had a big hand in making this a reality, as Sega notes the platform holder is its partner on the localized version of the game. So that's the good news. Here's some bad news. It's digital only. That might be a bummer if you're the type that gets upset about non-physical releases. Personally, I'm just happy it's coming at all. Also going digital are Yakuza 4 and Yakuza: Dead Souls, both of which hit PSN today.
Day of the Tentacle: Special Edition announced Posted: 06 Dec 2014 05:33 AM PST Today at Sony's PlayStation Experience event, Double Fine announced a joint collaboration between the two. Day of the Tentacle is coming to the PS4 and Vita in the form of a Special Edition release. As PC fans know this is a pretty huge deal, as it's one of the most beloved adventure games of the 90s and beyond.
Killing Floor 2 is coming to the PlayStation 4 Posted: 06 Dec 2014 05:21 AM PST Killing Floor has done amazingly well on the PC, and the sequel is now coming to the PlayStation 4. This will be the console debut for the series. There's no date announced so far, but you can get plenty of gameplay footage in the video above. I'm actually pretty excited for this, and I'll probably play around with it a bit more on a console with friends.
| Street Fighter V confirmed as PS4, PC exclusive Posted: 06 Dec 2014 05:19 AM PST
Street Fighter V is coming "exclusively" to PlayStation 4 and PC, Sony and Capcom announced today onstage at the PlayStation Experience in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fighting game will support cross-platform play, meaning PS4 owners and PC users will be able to compete against one another, something Capcom's Yoshinori Ono notes is a first for the series. During the keynote, Sony's Adam Boyes asserted PS4 "will be the only console this game ever appears on". So don't hold out hope for an Xbox One version. Check out the title's debut gameplay footage and screenshots right here: |
| EA giving away free PlayStation games this weekend! Posted: 06 Dec 2014 05:15 AM PST EA is giving away the following three titles for free via PSN starting today at noon Pacific until 6pm Sunday:
You can grab your free game right here. Go go go! |
Shovel Knight is coming to the PS3, PS4, Vita, Kratos boss teased Posted: 06 Dec 2014 05:11 AM PST Coming off of Yacht Club Games' 300k sales of Shovel Knight on the Wii U, 3DS, and PC, they have just announced that the game is coming to PlayStation platforms. It'll arrive on the PS3, PS4, and Vita sometime in the near future. Also, a Kratos boss fight was teased, which looks pretty damn amazing. It's really cool to see the team partner up with Sony like this to get the game on these three platforms and have a licensed tie-in. Expect to see it in quite a few Game of the Year conversations. It's their first game, people!
Bastion coming to PlayStation 4 and Vita in 2015 Posted: 06 Dec 2014 05:10 AM PST Good news, everyone! Bastion is coming to PS4 and Vita next year, Sony revealed today as part of its PlayStation Experience keynote. Bastion comes from Supergiant Games, the independent studio behind Transistor, who first released the action role-playing game on Xbox 360 in 2011. Since then, the title has arrived on Windows PC, Mac, and iOS devices. The developer says Bastion will definitely support cross-buy across PlayStation systems and might feature cross-save compatibility as well. The port is being handled by BlitWorks, who have worked on everything from Jet Set Radio and Spelunky to Fez and OlliOlli in the past.
Kill Strain is a free-to-play shooter in the works from Sony Posted: 06 Dec 2014 05:05 AM PST Sony announced Kill Strain at their PlayStation Experience event today, to thunderous roars of applause. It will be developed by their San Diego studio and will feature "5v2v5" combat by way of a top-down viewpoint. It will be playable today the event, and there will be a beta sometime in 2015. It's also free-to-play, and the presenter had a tough time getting people jazzed up about it as he was sweating profusely. It's for you, guys!
Ultra Street Fighter IV strikes PS4 next spring Posted: 06 Dec 2014 05:01 AM PST Ultra Street Fighter IV is coming to PlayStation 4, Sony announced today at its PlayStation Experience keynote in Las Vegas, Nevada. Capcom's fighting game will debut exclusively on PS4 sometime next spring. Sounds like Xbox One might be getting it at a later date. In other, more exciting news, Street Fighter V is coming to PS4 and PC. Get hype!
Enter the Gungeon: Go get a big gun and kill the past Posted: 06 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST Devolver Digital has announced it is publishing Enter the Gungeon next year. Something about, "A gun...THAT CAN KILL THE PAST" just won me over. I don't even have to understand what it means. Plus there's table flipping cover and a giant pink laffy taffy laser. Apparently you are able to choose between a variety of playable characters, each seeking the legendary gun that can destroy their tragic pasts. Along the way, you'll slaughter hordes of Gundead and find weapons that shoots things like bullets and weapons that shoot things like, "a volley of rainbows, fish, foam darts and bees." Cute rolling animation, cute enemies to explode, crazy guns. I'd like to play this on my Vita, but PS4 and PC/Mac/Linux will have to do.
Catch 15 full minutes of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End gameplay Posted: 06 Dec 2014 04:39 AM PST Sony started off with a bang with a live demo for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, which you can check out above. It's a full 15 minute demo complete with live gameplay, which includes a fateful encounter with Drake and the floor. It looks...very Uncharted, which is both good and bad, I guess. You'll see lots of stealth gameplay and full-on shooter sections alongside of the beautiful new engine -- but I've always thought the games were pretty impressive visually, so I feel like it's just par for the course. I was pretty disappointed by Uncharted 3, so I'm hoping for an improvement with A Thief's End.
Watch the PlayStation Experience event right here Posted: 06 Dec 2014 04:26 AM PST Sony has kicked off their presentation for their first PlayStation Experience event, and you can watch the stream on Twitch right now. If that isn't working for you, try the Ustream alternate instead. They've decided to start with Uncharted 4, which is apparently a live gameplay demonstration, complete with a "falling through the floor" glitch that shows that it's the real deal and not a canned demo. Props, Sony.
Posted: 06 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST My criteria for enjoying a game with microtransactions is simple -- am I having fun, and can I consistently have fun without feeling like I need to pay out? Unlike some people who hate microtransactions on sheer principle, if I can play through an entire game without having to indulge or otherwise pay attention to them for one moment, they naturally don't detract from my enjoyment of said game. If a game entices me to want to pay, I'm generally okay with it, as long as I can play the core game unfettered. See Path of Exile for this model. It works. Peggle Blast on the other hand is a travesty that attempts to subvert fun at every turn. Shame on you, EA.
Final Fantasy XIII resolution patch finally dated Posted: 06 Dec 2014 03:00 AM PST The PC port of Square Enix's perennially controversial Final Fantasy XIII didn't get off to the best start. As far as console-to-PC ports go, it wasn’t the worst that I’ve come across, but it had a lot of room for improvement, with resolution locked to meager 720p and no graphical options to speak of; a dual language option which would have been better implemented as optional DLC to sidestep the mandatory 60 gigabytes of install space; and lastly, an abysmal frame rate that seems to randomly fluctuate anywhere from 30 fps to 60 fps, providing an unstable gameplay experience. Square Enix announced last month that a patch was coming sometime in December that would attempt to rectify some of these issues. While there’s been no mention of a fix for the game’s unpredictable frame rate, the patch will allow users to select custom resolutions of at least 1080p and unspecified “graphic options” will be added to the game. The patch is set to coincide with the launch of the next title in the trilogy, Final Fantasy XIII-2, on December 11. FFXIII December Patch Date Announcement [Steam]
Final Fantasy leads PC games Winter Sale Posted: 06 Dec 2014 02:15 AM PST Deals brought to you by the crew at Dealzon. FYI: sales from certain retailers go toward supporting Destructoid. Winter is coming as Ned Stark would say, and so are the PC games holiday sales. This week several digital gaming retailers have already begun slashing prices - notable pick among them is Final Fantasy titles. Just ahead of next weeks release of Final Fantasy XIII-2, GMG launched a Square Enix sale with a focus on FF titles. Most games are on sale at 50% off, while those that aren't included can use the typical 20% off coupon. On Thursday GOG started their Winter Sale with up to 90% off over 750 DRM-free titles. Just like a Steam Store sale, you'll find Daily Deals and Flash Sales refreshed throughout the event. The sale runs through December 15th. Earlier in the week, (Swedish retailer) GamersGate also started their 2014 Holiday Sale with price cuts on hundreds of games and DLC packs. There are new Daily Deals launched every 24 hours through December 22nd. The discounts are on your more traditional Steam/Origin/Uplay AAA titles and go as high as 80% off. One less-than-impressive sales to launch this week is Origin Store's Adrenaline Sale. While Origin had some decent deals on Black Friday/Cyber Monday, this is mostly the same games at smaller price cut (meh). That said, there are still a few gems such as $15 Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare (if that's your thing).
