The PlayStation Network is finally back online Posted: 27 Dec 2014 11:20 AM PST Sony finally seems to have figured out whatever has plagued its consoles since Christmas Day. The PlayStation Network is returning to action at long last. According to PlayStation customer support and a large number of PSN users, the network now appears to be back online across all systems. However, some services are still struggling with bouts of intermittent connectivity. Destructoid has managed to connect to the PlayStation Store, access cloud saves, and test out some online multiplayer this evening. The sky could come crashing down again at any time now, but, for the moment, things appear to be getting back to normal. How are things on your end? Thank you to all the engineers that worked through the holidays to fix this mess.
EventHubs Street Fighter V character poll reveals a terrible crime Posted: 27 Dec 2014 08:00 AM PST Fighting game mega-site EventHubs is running a poll to see which Street Fighter characters fans want to see return the most in SFV. Considering SFV is still pretty early on in development, there is the slim, outside chance that polls like these might have a little more sway on Capcom's roster choices than usual, so I'm a bit more interested in the results than I normally would be. By which I mean, I want to make sure that my favorite characters make the cut.
Posted: 27 Dec 2014 07:00 AM PST In my years as a freelancer and staffer at various videogame outlets, I’ve had the pleasure of reviewing a ton of great games. In fact, this year I had the privilege of reviewing pretty much every “AAA” game that hit stores. I also review a lot of garbage, or games that are fundamentally broken in one or more aspects. Games that only through providence made it out of QA. I always try and remember though that every game, whether it’s an EA blockbuster or a one-man indie project, was someone’s baby. No matter what game you talk about, there is at least one guy or gal out there who put their all into it, even if the rest of the team couldn't be bothered to exert much effort. So I always try to approach criticizing a game from that angle. Escape Dead Island is a special case though.
Sony: PlayStation Network slowly restoring service Posted: 27 Dec 2014 06:45 AM PST [Update: According to a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony ascribes the outage to "high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay." The company is working to resolve the issue and restore network connectivity as soon as possible.] Sony asserts the PlayStation Network should steadily be coming back online. The announcement follows a two-day outage reportedly spurred by denial-of-service attacks. Destructoid's attempts to connect to the network today via PS4, PS3, and Vita have thus far proved unsuccessful. Meanwhile, PlayStation Support has shown network connectivity fluctuating between "intermittently available" and "offline." Sony promises updates on the situation as soon as information becomes available. Xbox Live managed to restore service yesterday after sustaining similar complications over the past couple days. Microsoft's network appears to be "up and running" at the time of writing.
Review: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy Posted: 27 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST The visual novel has been ubiquitous in Japan since the early ‘90s, but in the West they've never truly caught on. Whether it was the U.S.’s love for its own home-grown adventure games like Sierra’s King’s Quest, the SCUMM games by LucasArts, or the absolute pain it is to translate games from Japanese that can be over 450 English pages long, it's never been clear as to why that is. In fact, it wasn't really until the early 2000s that they finally started catching on. The Nintendo DS was the platform many English-speaking gamers experienced their first visual novel on, through none other than Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney.
Vlambeer is giving away free copies of Nuclear Throne in January Posted: 27 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST Rami Ismail of Vlambeer has come up with a creative and generous way to effectively double the Nuclear Throne community while at the same time saying thanks to all those who supported the Early Access title during 2014. As of January 1, 2015, owners of the delightful top-down shooter will receive a free, giftable copy that Ismail hopes you'll pass along to friends who in turn will provide valuable feedback as the team finishes up work on the title later in the year. "You've become really adept Nuclear Throne players, and we want to call upon you for your help. We need new players, people that are great players, that would love Nuclear Throne, and we need them to be part of our community. We're sure you know somebody like that, and if you do, we want to ask you to invite them to the Nuclear Throne community. We need fresh eyes on the game, people that will still get decimated by Big Bandit and that will complain about the ravens in the scrapyard. We need to know how they feel about Nuclear Throne, and we need your help to reach them." Rami's just the best, isn't he? Anyways, the offer's also good for new purchases made until January, so if you've been waiting to try it out for yourself and would enjoy having a second copy to pass along to a friend, this is your golden opportunity.
