WarioWare Inc. is my favorite multiplayer game, forever

Posted: 24 Dec 2014 11:00 AM PST

Before drifting to sleep these past several nights, I've thought about my favorite multiplayer game, WarioWare Inc.: Mega Party Game$!, and how it will almost certainly hold that honor forever.

It's been on my mind lately because, like Nic, I associate the holidays with couch-based multiplayer. In our family, WarioWare Inc. is it: the ultimate feel-good game that anyone, regardless of skill – and especially those with minimal skill – can enjoy. It's fiercely competitive, but no one comes out feeling like a loser. And, if there are no unclaimed controllers left, spectating is also a joy.

WarioWare Inc. gets physical. You don't know which microgame will pop up until the TV barks instructions at you and, oh shit, there's a hotdog on wheels coming right at you. Better hop, fast! It elicits that thing you used to do, years ago, where you'd literally move your body while jumping over pits in Super Mario Bros. Nope, you didn't outgrow the behavior. You never outgrow it.

One of the modes, Listen to the Doctor, requires you to act out requests while playing. Make duck sounds. Yell your favorite color. Close one eye. It's on each of you to applause (in-game) for accuracy after every "performance," but bartered deals and old grudges are unavoidable.

"Clap a bunch for me and I'll clap for you, too," they always say. Liar! Why must you lie?!

Platinum games teasing a gift for Christmas Day

Posted: 24 Dec 2014 10:00 AM PST

Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya just unblocked me on Twitter, which is probably the best gift I could hope for from the respected studio, but the rest of you may be getting something special from them as well. The Platinum Games Twitter account has encouraged fans to check its official Facebook page tomorrow for a present from Rodin, Bayonetta's shopkeeper, rival, and renowned Santa impersonator. I'm pretty sure he's also Lucifer, but that's just speculation.

The series generally doesn't treat Judeo-Christian beliefs with much reverence. Bayonetta spends most of her games making fun of angels, spanking them, and murdering them without a hint of shame or humility. She'll do the same to demons of course, but just because she's an equal opportunity spanker/murderer doesn't make her any less sacrilegious. It's a wonder the Christian Right hasn't gotten more mad about her. It's probably because they haven't heard of her (yet).

So knowing how little respect Bayonetta has shown for Christian figures in the past, it's easy to imagine how tomorrow's "gift" might be something that pokes fun at the Christmas Holiday. A sexy Jesus DLC costume for Bayonetta 2 perhaps? An announcement that the next Bayonetta game will be announced "this week... in a Christian magazine"? The one thing I'm sure of is that it won't be the announcement that Bayonetta 2 is coming to the Xbox One or PS4, though that seems to be the most popular guess going around at the moment.

Amazon's gift to you is free (good) Android titles and (more) cheap videogame downloads

Posted: 24 Dec 2014 08:30 AM PST

Well, it's tough to argue with this -- free Android games on Amazon, several of which are quality titles. Five Nights at Freddy's? Sure, I'll try it out. Terraria? I'll give it a shot. Tetris? Never heard of it, but maybe it's okay.

When reached for comment, Dave Grohl said that he approved of free mobile games, but he couldn't fully endorse the deals on PC titles. "Even though I'm the sexiest of international rock stars, I'm still wary of paying for videogames," Grohl commented. "Yes, I have more money than I know what to do with, but everyone's trying to sell me computer games. Steam, Amazon, everyone. It's tiring." Grohl concluded by yelling "THE BEST, THE BEST, THE BEST, THE BEST, THE BEST..." until Destructoid was irked enough to hang up the phone.

Resident Evil HD has PS3/PS4 cross-buy if you pre-order

Posted: 24 Dec 2014 08:00 AM PST

We're less than a month out from Capcom's Resident Evil remaster for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. I get the feeling it's going to do well for the company. Real well. We want more Resident Evil and, barring any technical hiccups, this re-release should deliver a nice, familiar experience. It might be a little too familiar for long-time fans, but I'll take it. Happily.

For the PlayStation Network release of Resident Evil, Capcom supports cross-buy -- but only if you pre-order. So, pay once for the $19.99 game and you'll own it on both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. You can pre-load it, too, enabling access right at midnight on release.

Late-night Resident Evil, just as it should be.

Guilty Gear Xrd's Leo Whitfang is out now as DLC

Posted: 24 Dec 2014 07:00 AM PST

Before I got worked up about a $7.99 DLC character in Guilt Gear Xrd, I thought about what was already on offer. The console version has a few extra exclusive characters in comparison to the arcade edition, and Elphelt is currently free DLC for a limited time.

Still, since my main concern with Xrd was the limited roster, charging $7.99 for a really cool and unique character seems wrong -- serious players will have to get him to remain competitive and practice every single new frame.

Ultimately, it's a good thing that it's a damn fine fighter, and worth spending the extra cash on.

This game is about avoiding Frisbees and farts

Posted: 24 Dec 2014 06:00 AM PST

Stomach hurts and flew Frisbee puts a muscular man between a rock and hard place.

Someone is lobbing Frisbees at his chiseled jaw. It matters not who. The muscle man needs to dodge them discs. Problem is, when he does, gas starts to build in his sinewy abdomen. He can only crouch for so long before collapsing into a cloud of farts. Then it's game over.

It's a delicate balance, avoiding Frisbees and farts. Are you up to the challenge?

The winner of Destructoid's Best Narrative Design of the year is...

Posted: 24 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST

Any game can use cut scenes to tell a great story. That trick was impressive back when CD-ROMs were cutting-edge technology. Today, the expectation for story-focused games is to work towards interweaving narrative techniques into every aspect of the design. Videogames can do so much more than pure linear storytelling devices like text or film. The best Narrative Design award is Destructoid's way of acknowledging the games that best proved that in 2014.

Telltale had two games nominated this year. Neither won the award, though they didn't do half bad either. The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead Season 2 found a place next to Broken Age: Act 1, Either One, and Dragon Age: Inquisition near the middle of the pack. Notable write-in votes include The Talos Principal, The Banner Saga, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Danganropa 2, Civilization: Beyond Earth, 80 Days, Wasteland 2, and Valiant Hearts, among others.

In what some would call a Christmas miracle, two games got the exact same amount of votes to win, making them Prom King and Queen of this year's best Narrative Design award ceremony. I know a lot of people hate ties, but I love them, so I'm going to embrace it. Sometimes two things are equally successful, standing side by side with their own important roles to fill. It's hard for me to find anything not to like about that. If you don't feel the same, go on and vote in our Reader's GOTY poll and make your tie-hating voice heard. The two winners of today's best narrative design award will be waiting for you below when you get back.

First look at Harebrained Schemes' return to Shadowrun and Kickstarter

Posted: 24 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST

So long as Harebrained Schemes has financially supportive fans, the company isn't done making Shadowrun games. In fact, there's going to be another Kickstarter in January. This concept art represents the "look and feel" of the new setting, which is believed to be Hong Kong.

Harebrained says it's sticking with the isometric gameplay view as seen in Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun: Dragonfall because of course it will. Otherwise, we'll have to wait for more info.

Despite how many times I tell myself otherwise, January is nearly here.

What was the strangest gaming-related Christmas present you've ever gotten?

Posted: 24 Dec 2014 03:00 AM PST

I owe a lot of my gaming knowledge to my mother. She was very supportive of my habit, allowing me to rent many, many games at my local video store that ran a "two for Tuesday" promotion. Not only were the prices considerably cheaper than Blockbuster, but the buy-one-get-one deal allowed me to devour tons of games at a time.

Because I had played so many though I was often a hard person to find gifts more. My Mom had to dig into the bottom of the barrel sometimes, and I still remember the Christmas I got the weirdest gaming gift ever: Toxic Crusaders for the NES.

At the time I was very young, so I wasn't aware of Troma Entertainment's decidedly adult-oriented Toxic Avenger franchise. Naturally, I was confused as to what the game even was, but since it was a rather simplistic beat 'em up I picked it up quickly. To this day I don't know how she found it, and why she even thought I would like it, but I will cherish it forever.

What was the oddest gift you've ever received, and did it end up becoming one of your favorites?
