Theatrhythm Dragon Quest looks AMAZING!

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 02:30 PM PST

This is the first trailer for Theatrhythm Dragon Quest. Marvel at its majestic beauty. It's a JRPG-shaped swizzle stick here to stir up your emotions. You feel that? Yeah, that's a double shot of nostalgia clinking up against your heart like rocks in a glass. Or something. Feels good, baby.

Assassin's Creed creative director has a new game

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 01:00 PM PST

Patrice Désilets is a man whose name you may not know, but whose work you probably do. Patrice used to be the creative director on the Assassin's Creed series, before Ubisoft kicked him to the curb and held on to the rights to a game he was working on set in Amsterdam in 1666. Understandably disappointed, Patrice set to work creating a new studio named Panache Digital Games and we finally have the first clues as to what the team's first game might be.

Founded this summer and unveiled back in November, Panache Digital Games is going to be working on a third-person historical-action-survival game. Hmmm, wonder where the Assassin's Creed creative director got that idea from.

"I believe wholeheartedly that this medium we call 'video games' can be a positive force for change in our society and that AAA quality gaming experiences have unmatched strength to achieve this," said Patrice in a press release. "I’ve always had an underlying ambition in my work: to move the world of games."

The game currently does not have an officially announced title and we have no idea if it's in any way connected to his battle for the rights to his previous Amsterdam 1666 project. Still, at least we know it's more of what Patrice is good at.

GameStop & Green Man Gaming launch winter sales on the heels of Steam

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 12:00 PM PST

Five bucks BF4 and six dollars CS: GO.

It's PC game winter sales everywhere you look. On the heels of Steam's Winter Sale (which is now on Day 2) and not wanting to be left out, 3rd party retailers are joining in the fray.

Both GameStop's digital department (you know, those guys who were complaining about digital games being too cheap) and Green Man Gaming launched their own respective winter sales today, with many items matching or beating Steam's prices.

Here are the top deals from each store:

The Halo 5 beta is out for Xbox One preview accounts and select members of the press, and will be coming your way soon on December 29 if you are qualified. I...don't know how I feel about it yet, as my experience has been mixed so far.

It's definitely a beautiful-looking shooter, but the gunplay feels off at times. I need to play more to make a full judgment, and this is a beta after all! Here's some tips to help you whenever you happen to get into it.

That lil Bulbasaur! Pokémon Center has the adorable Red Nendoroid

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 10:00 AM PST

We last spoke about Good Smile Company's Red Nendoroid months ago, which is just too dang long. The figure has since released in Japan, and the US Pokémon Center now has it in stock.

For $49.99, the set comes with the iconic trainer, plus Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. There are also swappable expressions and items like a backpack, Pokédex, and Master Ball.

Forget about amiibo for a second and gaze deep into this image. Life is good.

The friendly gaming master list

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 10:00 AM PST

[Dtoid community member The Scholarly Gamer had the brilliant idea to create a master list of Dtoider's console and Steam IDs. Add your name to the list in the comments so we an all game together. It's the perfect time, too, what with Friday Night Fights being a thing. Want to see your own stuff appear on the front page? Go write something! --Occams Electric Toothbrush]

Dear Destructoid Community,

It has come to my attention lately that you are all amazing. Well, maybe not lately, but I’ve been thinking about it more lately as I’ve been trying to link up with more Dtoiders to game with. Building off an earlier blog that I had quickly posted in October entitled Play With Me, I want to attempt a little community project and see how well it works.

Gift card carrots are Xbox One's last-minute Xmas sale

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 09:30 AM PST

Microsoft is making one last push to get Xbox Ones into the living room for Christmas, as it launches sales across various retailers. Most are offering an additional $50 gift card when you grab an Xbox One Assassin's Creed Unity Bundle.

Target is one-upping everyone else, though, and offering a $70 gift card instead. In terms of value, this best matches the deals available during Black Friday weekend - and if you have one of those Target store cards, that's another 5% off.

Here are all the current Xbox One Assassin's Creed Unity Bundle deals from various retailers:

Call of Duty's first DLC unleashes a 'freak show like no one's ever seen'

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 08:30 AM PST

As way of a bit of backstory for the zombies add-on to Advanced Warfare, Activision's released a teaser to semi-explain why hordes of undead have made their way to the military shooter. Seems a bomb was dropped to finish one war, but it unexpectedly started another.

The unlucky beneficiary is anyone that picks up the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare DLC, as now there are jetpacking zombies to contend with. Delightful. At least the soothing voices of Bill Paxton, John Malkovich, Rose McGowan, and Jon Bernthal will be there to provide some emotional stability when Havoc, the first scheduled add-on, releases in January 2015.

Review: Kalimba

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 08:00 AM PST

Games built around co-op have always had a place in my life. When I was younger, I had a lot of friends who were gamers, which made it easy to pick up and play multiplayer titles. As I grew up, I attended college, met more gamers, and then met my wife, who also plays games.

As such, I almost always have someone who is down to co-op. Thankfully, Kalimba not only has one of the best cooperative experiences around, but it also has a strong single-player element.

Finally! Final Fantasy XV English trailer

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 07:30 AM PST

"I could do with a baaaaaahhhhth." Got to have a Brit to help differentiate the bro-cast, innit? These are, for the first time, the English voices for Final Fantasy XV. Same ones you'll spend two hours with in the March demo if you buy Type-0. I encourage you to all get into a nice debate over subs versus dubs, because those are always fruitful and healthy. At least we'll all agree that the music is good. Right?

Mostly, I appreciated the handsome Noctis voice at the end: "Been a long time. Too long. Not much longer."

Got to show some self-awareness at this point.

There's also a recent Jump scan that shows off the boys' mechanic. It's possible she'll serve as this entry's Cid, taking care of the boys' town car with her car skills and inexplicable cleavage. I bet that car ends up being a sentient Knight Rider or something. It can't just be the bro'd trip vessel.

Nominees for Destructoid's Best Game Mechanics of 2014

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 07:00 AM PST

You can have the greatest narrative in the world and sprinkle memorable characters and scenes throughout a game, but all of it's for naught if your mechanics can't shine through. As the great Irving Mills once wrote, "it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing."

These nominees spotlight the best of games that transcend the simple title of "functional" and instead go for the gold when it comes to making things feel absolutely solid. Pulling off combos is akin to wrapping yourself up in a silk robe. You never have to fight these games in order to complete objectives. They're all titles you'd be playing over and over even if the other aspects were lacking. They simply feel right. We all know I'm talking about Bayonetta 2, but here's a list of other games, I guess.

Dragon Age: Inquisition gets 20% cut on Origin with sitewide coupon

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 06:00 AM PST

Origin launched a rare sitewide promo code on its storefront today, knocking 20 percent off almost everything in the catalog. (It doesn't work on BioWare points, so don't bother checking.)

While there are definitely some exclusions, the code works on recently released Dragon Age: Inquisition (for only $47.99) and its Deluxe Edition bigger brother. The code leaked a day early for a short period yesterday, so for a limited time it was stacking with the then-ongoing Seasonal Sale. (It's kaput now, so we're not even sure why we're mentioning it.)

If you're looking for even more Winter Sale-ish stuff at Origin, thus far it appears this 20% off sitewide coupon is the only thing available. So it's kind of a 'meh' situation unless you're thinking of getting Inquisition.

Miyamoto on Zelda Wii U, amiibo cards, and the next Nintendo console

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 05:30 AM PST

In an interview with the Associated Press, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about several topics, including sold-out amiibo figures, the future of Mario, and next year's open-world Zelda.

On missing exclusive in-game content because an amiibo is hard to find, Miyamoto said, "In the future, we have the option, if certain amiibo figures are no longer available in stores, to release an amiibo in card form with the same functionality." Wonder how much those would cost.

As for the next big Mario outing, it's likely going to be a while. "I think that maybe when we release the next hardware system, you can look forward to seeing Mario take on a new role or in a new game," he said. Nintendo is currently "busy working on software for the Wii U," but the company "[has] production lines that are working on ideas for what the next system might be."

Miyamoto wasn't willing to say much about the next Legend of Zelda -- we recently got a glimpse of it during The Game Awards -- but he noted that "one of the things we're working on right now is that, as you play, the world will change and be affected by what you choose to do."

The full interview is short and sweet. Should take you a couple of minutes, if that.

GOTY 2014: Best interpretive representation of Jeff Goldblum

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST

Someone once told me I talk like Jeff Goldblum. This is not true. I also don't look like Charlie Day, Peter Frampton, Bret McKenzie, Michael Sheen, or Dikembe Mutombo. But at least I appreciated the former (tip: don't tell people who they look like; it is confusing and uncanny at best, offensive at worst). If I could channel a fraction of Goldblum's swarthy, gangly, aloof sex appeal or ability to vomit stomach acid onto his food while his shedding, greasy hair starts to look like a perm, my life would definitely be better. Especially if I had the vomit thing.

And so it is that the third Steven Hansen's Destructoid's GOTY 2014 award is for the Best interpretive representation of Jeff Goldblum. If you missed them, here are the awards for illiteracy (Best willful misspelling in a title) and Best musical.

Because I am being sneaky/horny and using a shirtless Goldblum to adorn this post rather than art from the winner, now it feels like I have the element of surprise on my side and I'm pussyfooting around giving the award. Juking left, juking right. Will there be a world-shattering upset? I can feel you tittering with suspense as if you were hanging on Jeff Goldblum's every word and "Look," hand gestures.

Without further stalling, I hereby award Transistor the Steven Hansen's Destructoid's GOTY 2014 award for Best interpretive representation of Jeff Goldblum! Supergiant's sophomore effort is almost cool to a fault. It is aloof, but with a sumptuous, angular aesthetic that mirror's Goldblum's icy-hot mystery.

Steam sale: Assassin's Creed Unity, Valkyria Chronicles, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 04:30 AM PST

How will you be spending the second day of the Steam Holiday Sale? I suggest by doing anything other than spending money on games you may or may not ever play. Ever try cross-country skiing? In the red states, they shoot stuff while they ski and call it a "biathlon." Some people get really good at it and go to the Olympics, and it all starts by not buying Assassin's Creed Unity.

Daily Deals:

  • Assassin's Creed Unity ($40.19)
  • Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel ($29.99)
  • Depth ($14.99)
  • Batman: Arkham Origins ($4.99)
  • Ryse: Son of Rome ($19.99)
  • Castle Crashers ($1.49)
  • Killing Floor ($4.99)
  • Valkyria Chronicles ($14.99)
  • Fable Anniversary ($17.49)

The Flash Sales for the next twelve hours are The Legend of Korra ($9.89), Galactic Civilizations III ($19.99), Spacebase DF-9 ($6.79), Space Run ($5.09), Guns of Icarus Online ($2.24), and Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Director's Cut ($3.99). The Community Choice titles are Neverending Nightmares ($6.74), Hack 'n' Slash ($4.54), and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($17.99)

Investors inject influx of $6M to Majesco Entertainment

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST

Majesco Entertainment's fallen on hard times. It had gotten so bad that sources familiar with the publisher's financial situation said the company had become unresponsive and that its leadership had gone reclusive. And, that was all before it had shuttered its indie label Midnight City.

However, an influx of cash might have Majesco in a slightly better place, at least for now. The publisher just completed a new round of investments that sees it getting $1M up front and $5M in escrow to be delivered at a later date.

It's unknown what conditions need to be met to acquire the additional $5M, but Majesco's made several changes in the past few days that serve as indicators. On December 17, it started selling preferred stock at $.68 per share. It also recently appointed two new members to its board of directors.

Time will tell if this is enough to save the floundering publisher. It's a means to survive a bit longer, but there's no indication that Majesco has a viable plan to turn things around.

Predicting the next Telltale Games series

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 02:30 AM PST

The people at Telltale Games are wizards. There's no other explanation. They have an uncanny ability to coax money men into handing over the keys to some of the most valuable properties in the entertainment business. Then they seemingly have carte blanche to toy with things people hold dear, churning out officially sanctioned fan fiction right and left like there's no tomorrow.

They did it to Back to the Future. And Law & OrderNow they're doing it to MinecraftMinecraft!

Sometimes it turns out great. Other times Jurassic Park happens. It's wonderful. It's awful. It's everything that's right and wrong in the world. And it's going to happen again. And again...

I'm curious, though. What will they do next? Let's explore the possibilities. Let's find out.

Sony airs clever viral ad for The Order: 1886 in Japan

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 02:00 AM PST

I really have no idea of what to expect from The Order: 1886, but I enjoyed this new viral ad from Sony, the game's publisher. Framed as a news investigation, the video takes a viral approach to the game's 1886 setting.

I like the ad itself but I wish it just cut off after the BCO News splash. Having people think it's real would have been a lot more interesting. After all, people thought that Steven Spielberg killed a dinosaur after he released a promotional picture of him over a "corpse."

First Deception IV: Another Princess screens show toilet trap

Posted: 19 Dec 2014 01:00 AM PST

We already knew a bit about the upcoming Deception IV: Another Princess expansion/re-release, including the addition of new traps, a new protagonist, and a quest mode, but seeing it in action is something else entirely.

In addition to new screens showing off the heroine Valgyrie, there's also a tease with the main character (which seems to be Laegrinna dressed in Deception II garb), a few of the new traps (toilet trap is the highlight), and the quest mode menu.

A localization can't come soon enough.

Toys"R"Us canceling Lucario amiibo orders

Posted: 18 Dec 2014 11:00 PM PST

[Update: Toys"R"Us put pre-orders back up momentarily this morning, and I expect them to either be faulty or drop very soon. Try to re-pre-order if you want at your own risk!]

[Update 2: Now the retailer has taken off the listing entirely -- there's not even a "sold out" page. What a circus.]

The day the Lucario amiibo went on sale, I pre-ordered it. As in, weeks ago. Now Toys"R"Us is canceling orders, including mine. For reference, Lucario is exclusive to Toys"R"Us and you can't get it anywhere else. Huh?

I'm not alone it seems, as our own Brittany Vincent and Bill Platt have had their orders canceled too, as well as a number of readers out there who reached out last night. We are following up with both Nintendo and Toys"R"Us to see what the deal is. It's entirely possible that the latter wants people running into the store at the release date and buying add-on items. That's retail for you.

Between this, the holy trinity, and Rosalina pre-orders selling out in 30 minutes in the dead of night, this has become a total shitshow by Nintendo and the retailers involved, which chose to do exclusive amiibo in the first place. Why is it that Activision and Disney were able to sell millions of dollars worth of Skylanders and Disney Infinity toys near launch without a hitch?
