Bandai Namco formally changes name, hints at future of company Posted: 16 Dec 2014 02:04 PM PST Bandai Namco Games is changing its name to reflect the broader scope of operations that the company intends to move its focus to in the near future. Come April 1, 2015 (the start of the new fiscal year), it'll become Bandai Namco Entertainment. The decision for a new name was announced today in an investors' report, after it was voted on by the board of directors. Through the admittedly shaky translation of Google, it seems as if the change comes from a desire to expand into new products and services, especially given the evolution of technology. Bandai Namco appears to have a medium-term plan in place that will begin in April that aims to grow and expand business without confining the company solely to videogames. That plan hasn't been released to investors yet, but it likely will at the end of this quarter. 【7832】バンナムHD子会社の社名変更に関するお知らせのIR速報 [Investors Report]
Jonathan Holmes face broadcast to entirety of China Posted: 16 Dec 2014 12:00 PM PST [A wild Holmes appears! --Mr Andy Dixon] After rising up the ranks at Destructoid and becoming Editor-in-Chief, Jonathan Holmes sets his eyes on China. The country is growing in both economy and power, but what Mr. Holmes' real goal is is currently unconfirmed. His recent appearance on the Chinese news channel CCTV 13 opens up room for speculation.
Natural Selection 2 creator's underwater adventure Subnautica hits Steam Early Access Posted: 16 Dec 2014 11:00 AM PST Underwater games. I need more underwater games. Natural Selection 2 maker Unknown Worlds is doing its part with Subnautica, an open-ended exploration title that's been in development for around a year. It's now playable through Steam Early Access ($17.99; Windows only), though with the current build's promise of "at least one hour of adventure content available for play," it won't be far enough along for most of us. Still, I'll be following development. Subnautica is set in an "alien ocean world" in which you can gather resources, build submarines, and fight creepy fish monsters. It's a place I want to explore, eventually. Unknown Worlds expects the game to remain in Early Access for most of 2015. "Over time the world will grow larger, deeper and more striking, creatures more diverse and intelligent, loot, crafting and vehicle construction more comprehensive, the story more fleshed out, and ecosystems richer and more vibrant. Large submarines, new unique life forms, and fantastic environments are all in production and will be introduced to Subnautica Early Access in updates."
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse Wii U releasing Christmas Day Posted: 16 Dec 2014 10:30 AM PST The long awaited Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is finally about to hit the Wii U. The game has been out on the 3DS for a little while now, but I've been holding out for the home console version. Wii U-specific features like "HD character portraits by Mega Man developer IntiCreates, Off-TV play, Classic Controller Pro and Wii U Pro Controller support" are worth waiting for, though both versions have neat stuff like "unlockable Pirate-Mode, multiple endings, and and epic original soundtrack by Jake 'Virt' Kaufman" so you really can't go wrong. We caught up with Matt Bozon, creative director at WayForward, to ask why the studio continues to show so much support for the Wii U, the Parodius connection, his dreams of a Shantae amiibo, and a lot more. Read on for the full hair raising, booty plundering exchange.
Happy holidays and a musical gift Posted: 16 Dec 2014 10:00 AM PST [Dtoid community blogger Alphadeus asks for some help. It's not the easiest thing in the world to do and it means a lot that he would come to us. I think we can all relate to needing a little help from our friends. He also shares with us some newly remastered tracks from his wonderful community-inspired albums. Want to see your own stuff appear on the front page? Go write something! --Occams Electric Toothbrush] Good day, friends. I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Holiday, as well as a Happy New Year. I'm not sure when I'll be able to post again. I will write more about that below, but first, I wanted to share a gift with you all.
| Jagex and Hasbro terminate Transformers MMO Posted: 16 Dec 2014 09:30 AM PST We never got a chance to see if there was more than meets the eye with Transformers Universe; Jagex and Hasbro shut down the free-to-play MMO today while it was still in beta. The move isn't entirely unexpected, as it may have been foreshadowed by developer layoffs last month. There will be a maintenance period during which Transformers Universe will remain alive, but the servers will be permanently shut down on January 31, 2015. By then, all players that purchased anything from the game (such as founder packs or relic bundles) will be refunded their money. Jagex has already pushed out an update that prevents any further purchases or creation of new accounts. As for Jagex, the UK-based developer it turning its attention to its own IPs, such as the long-running Runescape. Predictably, this isn't the end of Transformers in the gaming space; Hasbro intends to pursue other videogame options for its Autobots and Decepticons. | Shadow of Mordor DLC goes hunting, vomiting Posted: 16 Dec 2014 09:00 AM PST Monolith released Lord of the Hunt today, the first add-on pack for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Yeah, the $10 DLC has a lot of the stuff you'd expect: new nemeses, new challenges, and even some guy named Torvin the Dwarven Hunter who hopefully goes on about the tricksy, filthy hobbitses. But, as okay as all that sounds, it can't hold a candle to the inclusion of the Wretched Graug -- a mountable monster that pukes toxin all over your enemies. Presumably, they then get the total yucks, and die of embarrassment because the football captain saw it all and now he'll never go to the homecoming dance with them. |
Brutal turn-based survival game NEO Scavenger out now Posted: 16 Dec 2014 08:30 AM PST I kept seeing NEO Scavenger pop up Twitter yesterday, and now I know why: it's just come out of early access and is now available on Steam and GOG.com for $14.99 (Windows/Mac/Linux). This is a turn-based survival game, and an especially harsh one at that. After waking up in a post-apocalyptic Michigan, you'll make your way across a randomized, hex-based map. With each passing bullet point on the description page, you'll come closer to hitting "add to cart," or closing the tab and never looking back. Your character's metabolism matters, from hypothermia to fatigue. Death is final. There's "complex wound simulation," and combat has options like "Lure" and "Kick While Down." There are no experience points; only rules and systems you'll need to learn over many playthroughs. Also, Detroit is "one of mankind's last bastions of safety." Shit's gotten real bad, in other words. This is a particular game for a particular player. Going forward, designer Daniel Fedor says he'll work on "bug fixes and better modding support after launch, as well as looking into potential new projects. And, of course, probably a vacation."
So, Mad Catz is making a controller for Farming Simulator Posted: 16 Dec 2014 08:00 AM PST Peripheral maker Mad Catz and Farming Simulator developer Giants Software are working on a range of Saitek-branded hardware for the PC simulation game we can't seem to stop talking about. The controller, which is planned for release this holiday season (price TBA), will work with Farming Simulator 2013, 2015, and future installments. I feel like a spy looking at this silly image. This page breaks down the features: "...you'll be driving your vehicle with a properly tilted, center sprung steering wheel with 900 degrees of turning and a wheel turning knob—just like the real thing! On the wheel, a Mini-stick controls your movement when not in your vehicle and real buttons allow you to use your in-game PDA. Gas and brake pedals come standard with the wheel, too." Besides the wheel, there's a Side Panel with "...a Front Loader Control Stick to give you precise control of your vehicle's front attachments and fully programmable buttons for tool attach/detach, tool switching, reverse, lights, horn, cruise control, and more!" If it's a true simulation you're after, might as well go all in. Or use the controller to beat Dark Souls.
This sure looks like the new Persona 5 protagonist Posted: 16 Dec 2014 07:30 AM PST Up on the Persona 5 website now is a teaser image that shows the protagonist from P3, the hero from P4, and...another person. All of them are holding masks, which looks to be a clear nod that the third individual we already knew about with their back turned is the new protagonist. A timer is running on the official site, and on February 5, 2015 we'll find out more. Until then, just salivate over the prospect of all those new Social Links. Persona Q is a good appetizer before then. Persona 5 [Atlus]
Team Fortress 2sdays: End of the line Posted: 16 Dec 2014 07:00 AM PST Happy Tuesday! I want to take a moment to apologize for not getting the post up last week. I hate when I miss a post, it drives me absolutely bonkers. Shadow is back with us this week to talk about a new update that, well, may not have been as awesome as many were hoping. It's probably best to let Shadow tell you all about it, since he definitely knows this game better than I do.
Forza Horizon 2's first DLC takes places at the ominous Storm Island Posted: 16 Dec 2014 06:30 AM PST Forza Horizon 2 shipped this fall with plenty of inclement weather, unlike some other game. Nevertheless, its first add-on centers around even more torrential downpours on the paradisiacal sounding Storm Island. Storm Island, as the DLC's called, is a new sandbox to explore that's full of extremes -- extreme weather, extreme terrain, and an extreme amount of content. Sporting 90 events (including five new event types) and an entirely unique map from the base game, Storm Island seems like the type of add-on that'll be quite the time-sink for those that want to fully experience it. However, it doesn't necessarily come cheap. Storm Island's available now for $19.99 ($9.99 for VIP members), which is a bit more than most DLC packs. But, those legendary tales about racing through a monsoon are priceless.
Review: Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- Posted: 16 Dec 2014 06:00 AM PST I've spent many late nights with Guilty Gear. Week-long tournaments, money-matches between friends; it was the perfect series to play around with, and one of my most competitive. But as time went on, the franchise started to get a little stale. We saw the same exact character models, the same movesets, and not much in terms of innovation. Guilty Gear Xrd changes that significantly with a complete overhaul of the visual style on top of everything that made Guilty Gear so great in the first place.
| Hearthstone is out on Android in select territories Posted: 16 Dec 2014 05:30 AM PST Hearthstone is now in its testing period for Android tablets in select territories. If you happen to live in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand (or have an account in any of those regions), you can download the game now on your Android device. Just like the iPad version you'll net a free pack of cards for logging into your account -- all platforms are connected. Expect the non-tablet mobile version in 2015 for Android phones and iPhones. | MMORPG Onigiri coming to PS4, Xbox One in 2015 Posted: 16 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST Onigiri is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One across North America and Europe in early 2015, developer CyberStep confirmed with Windows Central. The free-to-play MMORPG draws inspiration from Japanese mythology, tasking players with slaying hordes of demonic youkai and saving the world from an ancient evil. CyberStep released Onigiri in Japan this January, and planned to put out a localization on PS4 this summer. That obviously didn't happen, though. Just like every other game under the sun, it's been delayed to next year. If you're curious to check it out before then, an English version is currently available on PC and you can find the Japanese iterations on PSN and Xbox Live. As a side note, it appears Xbox boss Phil Spencer was right. There will indeed be JRPGs on Xbox One. MMOs count, right? | GTA Online heists look good and sound even better Posted: 16 Dec 2014 04:30 AM PST Alright, heists in Grand Theft Auto Online look terrific. It's been a long wait, and we're not done waiting just yet -- Rockstar says the free update for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One will arrive in early 2015 -- but at least we've got something to look at, finally. Eases the tension. Speaking to IGN, GTA Online producer Imran Sarwar admits designing four-player heists "turned out to be a lot more difficult than we originally thought [and] took several passes from scratch." One challenge, he says, "is that unlike a heist in Story Mode, every player needs to feel central to the action at all times, and that's much more challenging than it appears." The final design sounds cool. The leading player will have to put money down to set up a heist and won't receive a payout until the finale is finished, but they have control over the crew, their outfits, and their cuts. "Switching between the roles of crew member and heist leader will give players a totally different experience," says Sarwar. "Some missions have all players working as one unit, some require players to take on specific tasks like hacking or crowd control, while others require players to split into smaller teams to complete separate high value objectives." Each heist, of which there are "five unique strands involving over 20 total missions," will culminate in a set-piece mission. "I don't want to spoil a whole heist," says Sarwar, "but a favorite would be the finale of an epic prison break where players come from different points on the map to join together at just the right time. It requires a pilot, a demolitions expert, and some undercover work to pull it off, and it takes real teamwork, the ability to think fast and a lot of communication to put all the pieces in place to extract the target flawlessly." | This game's about anthropomorphic mushroom girls Posted: 16 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST Step aside Captain Toad, there's a new game about fungi folk in town. Kinoko Collection: Kinoko Takenoko Hyakunen Sensou (Mushroom Collection: The Hundred Year's Mushroom-Bamboo Shoot War) is a new mobile game about, yes, a conflict between anthropomorphic mushrooms and bamboo shoots. It seems like a bizarre play on Kantai Collection, a popular online game from Kadokawa featuring personified moe warships, but it only gets stranger the further down this rabbit hole you go. Apparently, Kinoko Collection has its roots in a Japanese chocolate feud. Yes, a feud between two brands of chocolate. Kinoko no Yama (Mushroom Mountain) and Takenoko no Sato (Bamboo Shoot Village) are very divisive candies. While both brands are made by the same company, Meiji, consumer opinion on which sweet is superior is decidedly split. Maybe this game will help decide once and for all which one is better. 「きのこれ」公式サイト [Kinokore via Hachima Kikou, Anime News Network] |
I played Super Mario Bros.' World 1-1 as fat Sonic in Action Henk Posted: 16 Dec 2014 03:30 AM PST If there's a level editor, World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. will find a way. But before I get to that, there's a more pressing matter: fat action figures dressed up like Sonic the Hedgehog. Yes, we could use more of those in this industry. I've been playing Action Henk, a time-trial platformer in which the titular hero slides down orange Hot Wheels tracks, wall-jumps off toy blocks, and generally tries to avoid touching the floor (because it's lava). The game has been on Steam Early Access for a while now, but developer RageSquid recently added new content, including disco-themed levels and, most notably, a level editor tied to Steam Workshop for convenient in-game access. So that -- and my fondness for this style of game; think Trials minus the motorbikes, at a faster pace -- was an easy in for the team to seek me out.
| With the rights back in place, Dementium is coming to the 3DS Posted: 16 Dec 2014 03:00 AM PST The Dementium series pushed the Nintendo DS to its limits, and reaped the rewards from a legion of fans that enjoyed the series for years. It's probably Renegade Kid's most known project, and now a new generation will be able to enjoy it on the 3DS. It will be an enhanced re-release of the original, with 60 frames per second and 3D support. Apparently some of the game's "unfair" parts will be toned down, but a "hardcore mode" is being considered for those who want a bigger challenge. Don't expect the game until mid-2015. | Don't Starve Together works just as well as you'd expect it to Posted: 16 Dec 2014 02:30 AM PST Starting this week, you can buy into the Don't Starve Together beta if you don't have access already. It's $5 if you own the base game, and it comes with a gift code for the core package as well as two Together codes. So how does it work? First you'll have to sign up for developer Klei's proprietary service with your email and date of birth. The process was kind of buggy, as the in-Steam browser constantly errored out and didn't display the right screen. I had to restart Steam twice, and then wait 15 minutes for an "instant" verification link. Thankfully, everything was smooth sailing after that. |
Riptor is looking pretty killer in her new Killer Instinct trailer Posted: 16 Dec 2014 02:00 AM PST Although we had confirmation of Riptor's existence in Killer Instinct already, now we have a better look at her moveset and backstory. Evidently she was created as a result of a competing project with Fulgore and Cinder, and as a ruthless predator, she was "augmented and constrained" by modern technology. The first batch wasn't cooperative though, as they tore anything in front of them to shreds. I'm loving the rushdown attacks shown in the trailer, and Riptor looks like a really fun addition to the cast.
Rockman EXE 3 is hitting the Wii U Virtual Console soon Posted: 16 Dec 2014 01:00 AM PST The Mega Man Battle Network series came at a perfect time, mixing the franchise up with strategic gameplay and a new universe that was really fun to play on the go. Pretty soon Japanese Wii U owners will be able to play the third iteration of the series, Rockman EXE 3, as it hits the eShop this week. Both versions are coming (Black and White), which have nominal differences similar to Pokemon. Since the first iteration is already out overseas on the Wii U, I hope the sequels are coming as well.
The Stein's Gate game is coming to Vita, PS3 in 2015 Posted: 16 Dec 2014 12:00 AM PST I haven't gotten around to the Steins;Gate game yet, but I absolutely loved the show from start to finish. Some people say it starts off a little slowly and ramps from there, but I loved the banter and buildup just as much as the conclusion. It's a good thing then that the game is coming to the Vita and PS3 in 2015 for both Europe and North America! It's a visual novel, which feels perfect for the Vita. I can't wait to play it!
