| Review: Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris Posted: 15 Dec 2014 12:00 PM PST Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light was a surprise hit for me. I had never been a huge Tomb Raider fan, but its focus on puzzles, asymmetric cooperative multiplayer, and replayability drew me in. It's hard to believe that was already four years ago. Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris (abbreviated as Lara Croft: TOO, which any word nerd will appreciate) picks up the torch from Guardian of Light, adding four-person multiplayer, new puzzle mechanics, and updated visuals. It has a great formula for success, but it slips a little in execution. |
| Lisa: The Painful RPG is out on Steam, gets new feel-bad trailer Posted: 15 Dec 2014 11:00 AM PST Lisa: The Painful RPG is 10% off on Steam for its first week on the storefront. I make a cameo in the game as an idiot who might get a sort of super rabies if you play your cards right (or wrong, depending on how much you want me to get super rabies). By rights, I should not be telling you not to play this game. It promotes the idea that I am a pretty terrible person. That wouldn't be fair to you, though. Lisa is one of the most impressive games of 2014, the fact that it was developed largely by one person notwithstanding. You should check it out, no matter how dumb and gross it makes me look. The way it weaves narrative into gameplay is something worth talking about. The amount that it resembles the culture found on certain anonymous internet message boards is something worth crying about. The feeling you have when you actually manage to do something right in this terrible, horrible, no good, very bad place is worth cheering about. If you've ever wondered what it was like to navigate a world where lust, fear, and sadism are the prime motivators in people's lives, you don't have to go to a college frat party or 4Chan anymore. Lisa: The Painful RPG offers up the same order of joy and pain, but without all of the struggles that can come from visiting those subcultures in real life. I'm excited to see what people think of it. |
| Monkey Island creator on Kentucky Route Zero, designing worlds and not sucking Posted: 15 Dec 2014 10:30 AM PST It's time for part two of our interview series with Gary Winnick and Ron Gilbert, two of the fathers of the Point & Click genre. as we count down to the end of their Thimbleweed Park Kickstarter. Talking to these legendary creators is a privilege that I wish that I had access to every day. I'm tempted to run a Kickstarter for a campaign to force Ron and Gary to keep running Kickstarters year round, so they'd always have motivation to respond to intrusive questions from strangers (aka "interviews"). I wonder how much money that campaign would pull in? This time around we talked about the differences between Maniac Mansion and Thimbleweed Park, Ron's tendency to name his games after locations, and how the games that were influenced by Maniac Mansion were in turn an influence on him. Thanks again to Gary and Ron, and come back tomorrow for the final part of this spine-tingling series of questions and answers, because it's nice to have both. |
| Doujin SRPG Rime Berta lands on Steam tomorrow Posted: 15 Dec 2014 10:00 AM PST Rime Berta is coming to Steam tomorrow -- just in time for Hanukkah. The strategy role-playing game, developed by doujin studio Next-Soft Plus, draws inspiration from Final Fantasy Tactics, sporting terraced landscapes that impact how you move and fight on the battlefield. The story centers around intrepid young girl named Livia, who ventures into a mysterious tower with hopes of obtaining a relic that might rescue her ailing village from disease. Naturally, she winds up commanding an army of sentient puppets to save the day. Rime Berta debuted at Comiket in 2013, before making the leap to western shores this August via Playism. Those already in possession of the game will receive a free Steam key to go along with the DRM-free version. Rime Berta [Steam] |
| Posted: 15 Dec 2014 09:30 AM PST "Them's some good kitty jumps," Destructoid's managing editor Jordan Devore enthusiastically proclaimed before mandating this video be posted despite it being two years old. You're the boss, Jordan. You're the boss. |
| Holiday clearance! All Dtoid shirts now $12.95! Posted: 15 Dec 2014 09:15 AM PST All t-shirts on the Destructoid store have been dropped down to $12.95! All the shirts are on clearance, meaning once they're out of print you won't be able to get these shirts again! We're making way for something new, and until then we need to clear up the old store front. You'll get free shipping worldwide on orders over $60 too. So hurry and get these shirts before they're gone. We've already cleared a couple of designs, plus all the hoodies are forever gone. Don't miss out! |
| Club Nintendo adds Super Mario Kart, Kirby's Dream Land 3 Posted: 15 Dec 2014 09:00 AM PST The last three times I've written about Club Nintendo rewards, Kirby made his way onto the list. That trend continues today with the new set of game offers available until January 19, 2015:
My Super Nintendo days were spent playing Super Star, not Dream Land 3. In fact, I never played the latter; my regret grows each time I'm reminded of that fact. I'm watching a playthrough on YouTube and it's so pleasant. Oh my god, Rick the hamster rolling Kirby at 11:50. |
| Don't lose your clothes when a killer is lurking around Posted: 15 Dec 2014 08:30 AM PST Also, don't hide under a bed right after he begins to chase you. This is Until Dawn, Supermassive's cinematic PlayStation 4 game about eight friends vacationing at a lodge where a masked killer happens to be on the loose. The story will branch out based on your actions, which is something we've heard promised time and time again. At least here, any and all of the characters can die. I like the sound of that. |
| Ducklings and Pikmin need to watch out for storm drains Posted: 15 Dec 2014 08:00 AM PST Don't tell Jonathan, but I still need to watch Pikmin Short Movies. I'm a bad Pikmin fan. But looking at these pieces of art created using Art Academy: SketchPad makes me feel better. They were made for a Miiverse challenge put forth by Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto. "The theme for this drawing challenge is 'Pikmin Spotted!'. Use your imagination and have fun drawing Pikmin in different situations. For example, imagine what the Pikmin might be doing if you found them in real life. What sort of mischief would they get into?" The results are now in. My favorite, grim as it is, has to be the one with the ducks. Art Academy Events [Miiverse via Go Nintendo] |
| Creative Assembly sees opportunity in an Alien: Isolation sequel Posted: 15 Dec 2014 07:30 AM PST Without doubt, Alien: Isolation was the Alien game that franchise fans had longed for for years. A single terrifying xenomorph, hardly any weaponry, and an "anything to survive" mentality -- this title was certainly all parts Ridley Scott and zero parts James Cameron. Given the way Creative Assembly's reflecting upon Isolation, don't be surprised if we see a second installment. *Spoilers ahead for those that haven't yet played Alien: Isolation* In an interview with AVPGalaxy, lead designer Gary Napper says Creative Assembly is tossing around the potential for a sequel. "The plot for a sequel is a daily topic in the studio sometimes," he said. "People have their own ideas for where it should go, our writers have some solid concepts and yes, we do have a great opportunity to continue her story. I personally think that Amanda did not get infected in the hive, as when she wakes, the closest egg remains closed." Napper elaborated on what a sequel to Isolation might entail. He's of the opinion that it'd have to follow the same singular alien approach, but that he'd like to "do more with the environment and the interactivity within it." We've reached out to Sega to see if the publisher would like to comment on any possible plans for an Alien: Isolation sequel. We'll update this story in the event of a response. | Felynes can dress up as Dante, Blanka, and Chun-Li in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Posted: 15 Dec 2014 07:00 AM PST I'm no Monster Hunter player but I'm liking the cross-game costumes for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Well, most of them. In line with today's Devil May Cry re-release news, Capcom has shown a Felyne outfit based on Dante. That hair! I'm now going to go Google "cats wearing wigs." Confirmed: best decision I've made all morning. And since the Capcom Cup happened over the weekend, we're getting a first look at costumes based on Street Fighter II's Blanka and Chun-Li. See those in action here: |
| Assassin's Creed Unity season pass owners' free game is coming this week Posted: 15 Dec 2014 06:30 AM PST As an attempt to make amends for the flubbed Assassin's Creed Unity launch, Ubisoft announced last month that it'd grant the Dead Kings story add-on for free to all Unity players. This put out the season pass owners, since they were now only receiving a portion of the content that they paid for up front. To rectify that situation, Ubisoft decided to give season pass owners a free game sometime in the near future. Via an FAQ on the Unity site, Ubisoft's revealed that the gratis title offer will be live later this week. A dedicated site will launch, where players can enter their UPlay credentials to verify their eligibility. As stated in late November, the list of games to choose from is limited to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Far Cry 4, Rayman Legends, Just Dance 2015, Watch Dogs and The Crew. One caveat to the offer is that the free game must be for the same platform as the system that the season pass was registered on. Ubisoft also warns that anyone that redeemed the Assassin's Creed Unity season pass after November 25 may experience some delays in processing their free title. | You defeated Games for Windows Live, Dark Souls Steam migration update out now Posted: 15 Dec 2014 06:00 AM PST The long-time-coming update that replaces Games for Windows Live with Steamworks in Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition for PC is out today. Full instructions on how to transfer your achievements and save data are over here, but here's the gist if you bought the game on Steam:
The process took me a few minutes including the time it took to download a couple necessary updates. Be sure to transfer your data by February 16, which is when Steamworks becomes the default for Dark Souls. There are no guarantees transferring will work after that point. |
| Maybe just steer clear of The Order: 1886's police station Posted: 15 Dec 2014 05:30 AM PST Ready at Dawn released a new trailer this morning imploring prospective The Order: 1886 players to "join the London police." Before you rush into things headfirst, take one minute to watch what happens to those law-bringers. On second thought, we'll pass on this one, Ready at Dawn. While we've finally gotten some extensive hands-on time with The Order (impressions coming soon!), we still haven't gotten to see much of the lycanthropian presence that plagues this video. That needs to change soon, because we want to know all about the (AHOOOOO!) werewolves of London. |
| How did Destructoid's most anticipated games of 2014 come out? Posted: 15 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST Want to feel old? January 2014 was just about one year ago. That's one whole season of a TV show or a complete Earth's orbit around the sun. Way back then--I can hardly remember it in the shadow of the god awful year--the Destructoid staff did a list of our most anticipated games of 2014. And what suckers we were! Most of the damned things didn't even come out. Chris was right to go with sure-thing Dark Souls II. It would've been hard to mess up (or not release). And a few folks who picked things way back in the first Year of Luigi (AL) didn't follow up for various reasons, but be assured that Patrick Hancock was definitely happy with Super Smash Bros. It was a weird year of games, though, rife with big-name delays, big-name flops, and lovely games that came out of nowhere to end up being the most fun (like Invisible Inc.) Maybe 2015 will do right by us (or us by it). For now, let's look back. |
| Capcom re-releasing DmC and Devil May Cry 4 on PS4 and Xbox One with new content Posted: 15 Dec 2014 04:15 AM PST Devil May Cry returns next year but not with an all-new installment. I know, I know. But this is the age of higher-res re-releases, after all. Capcom will launch DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition ($39.99 / €39.99) on March 17, 2015 and Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition (price to be announced) in summer 2015 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. No more talk about how 30 frames per second feels right for DmC; the Definitive Edition runs at a smooth 60 frames per second. The updated game includes all the DLC, a higher difficulty setting, a 20-percent-faster Turbo Mode, Hardcore Mode, popular community mods, and new character skins like Devil May Cry 1 Dante and Classic Vergil. DmC has also been rebalanced. If you only care about DMC4, not DmC, skip to 1:45 for a quick word from Vergil. Capcom isn't sharing much about the new special edition and notes it'll say more "in the coming months." |
| Review: Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD ReMIX Posted: 15 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST The odd concept of melding a host of characters from Square Enix’s seminal Final Fantasy series, Disney’s perennial film favorites, and a cast of original personalities, seemed as though it was destined for failure. I mean, who would want to hear Donald Duck’s honking lisp while sharing the screen with the likes of Cloud Strife or Sephiroth? Being a Square fan, I had to try it out though, and not only did I fall in love with the games, but I rediscovered my love for the Disney franchises of my youth. Although it took almost four years for a sequel to be released, Kingdom Hearts was and is a series that has stuck with me. Then, when Kingdom Hearts II was released in early 2006, I bought it immediately. |
| What do you think of raiding in Destiny? Posted: 15 Dec 2014 03:30 AM PST If you follow Destiny but don't play it, you've probably heard this line a lot: "the raids are the best part." But that's basically all you hear, and then you move on because of all the other negative word of mouth. So I wanted to ask the readers that do play Destiny, do you like the raid aspect of the game? If so, what's your favorite part? Personally, I'm into the idea of an "hour or less" raid commitment. It's something that can challenge me as a gamer, but not necessarily take hours upon hours to make progression with like a true MMO. With the two raids included so far in Destiny, you can jump in with five other players and feel like you're getting somewhere. As someone who has spent eight hours in a night raiding in WoW more than a few times on the same exact boss, the traditional process can get tiring. Beyond that concept, Destiny's raids are very well designed. Yes, there's no matchmaking feature yet, which sucks for people who aren't go-getters and don't make their own groups on third-party sites, but the actual encounters are leaps and bounds better than the core game offers. Bosses aren't just bullet sponges, they are chess pieces to be conquered, and devising the best strategy week after week is something that's possible. |
| This early build of a 13-inch Mega Man statue looks pretty great Posted: 15 Dec 2014 03:00 AM PST Next March, X-Plus Toys will be producing a new Mega Man statue, and the project is coming along pretty great. It'll be 13-inches tall, and is made of soft plastic. It'll run you 8,424 Yen, which is roughly $71.00. There is no shortage of Mega Man merchandise, and with the amiibo coming out and his latest appearance in Super Smash Bros., the Blue Bomber is still alive and well. I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but I can see some amazing things coming from selling the IP to Nintendo. All Capcom needs to do is retain the merchandising rights, and give the kid a good home. メットール [Rockman Unity via Rockman Corner] |
| A new SaGa game is coming to the PlayStation Vita Posted: 15 Dec 2014 02:30 AM PST Squaresoft's SaGa series never really caught on like Final Fantasy, but it still has a rather dedicated fanbase that looks forward to every release. Recently during the SaGa 25th Anniversary livestream, Square Enix announced that another game in the series is in the works, specifically for the PlayStation Vita. Only two pieces of artwork were shown, and that's basically all we have. In other SaGa news, the PC browser game Imperial SaGa is coming out in Japan next year, as is Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song as a PS2 Classic. SaGa 2015 announced for PS Vita [Gematsu] |
| Training amiibo as presents? What a neat idea Posted: 15 Dec 2014 02:00 AM PST I was talking to a friend of mine recently about amiibo, and some of the ideas he came up with on how to use them are pretty interesting. Recently we've been training our own fighters with our best moves, and then pitting them against each other for fun. It's a neat enough diversion to do every so often to break up constant Smash battles. But another concept he came up with is even better. He decided to give amiibo as gifts, but only after opening the box. Wait, what kind of second-hand gift is that? He explained that he opens the box, puts them into his the game, then trains them up himself -- then he gifts them. The idea is to give people their amiibo of choice, but put a lot of time and effort into it first to ensure that it's a challenge out of the box. If they want to reset the toy that's cool, but they have something unique that no one else has with that gift -- an imprint of the gifter. I have to admit, I'm going to totally steal this idea for the holidays! |
| The Sonic Boom universe will show up in the Mega Man comic Posted: 15 Dec 2014 01:00 AM PST We already knew that a "Worlds Unite" storyline was coming for Archie Comics' Mega Man and Sonic lines, but now we have a little more information as to what it entails. As revealed by IGN, Mega Man X and Sonic Boom are now in the mix. That's in addition to the core cast of the original comics, making it a gigantic four universe collision. Funnily enough Sonic Boom seems to be doing well in terms of their toyline and cartoon even if the games aren't quite as good. The crossover will arrive in Spring 2015. | Riptor is coming to Killer Instinct this week Posted: 15 Dec 2014 12:00 AM PST Another classic combatant returns. Killer Instinct will get Riptor this week, as announced by the developers. Early access members are set to get her today, while the rest of the public will get her on December 17. The new design is very similar to the old one, but the updated model now seems to have suffered some form of experimentation, hence some extra augmentations. In addition to the new character a balance batch will also arrive, as will a story mode and more costumes (one of which is free for Orchid). The textual stream [Ultra Combo] |
