SFV being exclusive might not be the worst thing ever

Posted: 14 Dec 2014 07:00 AM PST

Ok, yes we all hate third-party exclusives. It's especially grating for a franchise as venerable and well loved as Street Fighter. This is a raw deal for the world warriors out there who have already plunked down money on an Xbox One and now have to scrounge up the cash for a PS4 if they want to keep tossing hadokens in the near future.

But aside from the saltiness and the knee-jerk reaction against exclusives as a concept? I have to say that a single console/PC exclusive with cross-play between the two platforms is pretty much as close to perfect as you can get for a popular fighting game.

Please don't hate me.

Playable Pauline, shipping 120 games and #IDARB with Mike Mika

Posted: 14 Dec 2014 06:00 AM PST

[Update: Show's over folks! Man, that was one whopper of a conversation. Turns out Mike has worked with directly Jimmy Fallon, Nintendo, Adam Sandler, Disney, and almost John Lithgow. Definitely of the most eye open episodes of Sup Holmes yet. The rerun should be up in a few days. In the meantime, here's Bacon and Eggs playing #IDARB against some dudes with explosive diarrhea.]

Today on Sup Holmes we welcome Mike Mika to the program. Mike has been working in game development for a long time, having contributed to Dark Void Zero, Halo 2600, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix and many more. He made the headlines last year after creating a hack of Donkey Kong for his daughter that allowed you to play as Pauline. Now he's taking that "play as whoever you want" concept to the next level with #IDARB, a game that lets you play as anyone ever, doing whatever the heck you want.

We're starting the show at 4pm EST. Tune in live to meet a successful game developer and maybe win a copy of his latest game. It'll be fun!

This Street Fighter V trailer signals Charlie's return

Posted: 14 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST

Street Fighter V made another appearance at yesterday evening's Capcom Cup, which, amidst the bout between Ryu and Chun-Li, provided a brief flash of a third fighter.

That sure looks like Charlie Nash, Guile's military comrade. After first making an appearance in Street Fighter Alpha, we haven't seen the guy since Street Fighter Alpha 3. Welcome back, dude!

Street Fighter V is currently in development for PlayStation 4 and PC, and supports cross-platform multiplayer. You can check out the world's first ever live look at Street Fighter V right here.

Aviary Attorney flies to Kickstarter, soars away with my heart

Posted: 14 Dec 2014 04:30 AM PST

Aviary Attorney is the ingenious brainchild of Coventry-based Sketchy Logic; the living half of which (for the sake of this project) is comprised of programmer and designer Jeremy Noghani with graphic artist and animator, Mandy Lennon. The deceased half of the team behind the litigious project are French composer Camille Saint-Saëns and French caricaturist Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard. It may sound like an odd assemblage of talent behind the production of a videogame, but the end result is almost breathtakingly charming. Have a look at the game's Kickstarter trailer and see if you agree.

According to the project's crowdfunding page, the basis for Aviary Attorney came about after the team discovered the surreal works of the 19th century artist and illustrator known by the pseudonym J. J. Grandville. By carefully scanning and animating these images the talented duo were able to "give life to Monsieur Falcon, Sparrowson, and all the other characters."

The team also points out that "nearly every part of the game is drawn from or inspired by the public domain," for instance, "backgrounds and items have been borrowed from a range of 19th century illustrated books. The music takes the form of transcriptions and adaptions of French romantic composers, most notably Camille Saint-Saëns." For a fittingly classy finishing touch, the title's font is noted as being over one hundred years old. That's attention to detail, folks.

Aviary Attorney takes place in Paris of 1848 and follows the adventures of bird-brained defense lawyer Jayjay Falcon and his loud-mouthed manservant, Sparrowson. The pair receive a lucrative offer from the Demiaou estate, of which, Bourgeoisie kitten Caterline Demiaou has been accused of murder and it's up to you to deliver for her a Not Guilty verdict.

Fighting game science, advice from the pros and more with Cardboard Robot

Posted: 14 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST

[Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on Youtube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.]

Last Sunday on Sup Holmes we had a spirited chat with April and Christian, creators of the newly funded fighting game Pocket Rumble. We talked about the allegations that the game uses stolen graphics, how designing a fighting game can make you better at playing them, the pros and cons of damage scaling, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 Vs. Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, balancing ease of operation with depth, antler headed boys and a lot more. Designing a fighting game is no small feat. Thankfully, Cardboard Robot is so in love with the genre that I have no doubt that the'll make something great with Pocket Rumble

Thanks again to April and Christian for being on the show, and tune in today at 4pm EST when we welcome Mike Mika to the program. Mike's probably most famous for creating the playable Pauline in Donkey Kong hack. We'll be talking about that, his game-ography at Other Ocean, his upcoming "Game that is literally anything" title #IDARB, and a lot more.

We're also going to give out some codes for #IDARB, so be sure to tune in if you want to try it out.

How to win friends and influence people in DayZ

Posted: 14 Dec 2014 03:30 AM PST

DayZ is a lot of things to a lot of different people. For some, it's a chance to test their mettle against an overtly hostile world that would like nothing better than to see them die cold, hungry and alone. For others, it's a virtual playground for unleashing their inner troll; killing on site for nothing more than a chuckle, or torturing other players simply because there is no one to stop them. There are heroes, too. Self-styled vigilantes and do-gooders seeking to create some sort of order amidst all the chaos, but as well intentioned as they may be, they've still got blood on their hands as well.

It's a grand social experiment when you think about it. DayZ is a lawless space where individuals are free to be themselves, however horrible or wonderful that may turn out to be in the end. And, to tell you the truth, I think that is why the game fascinates me as much as it does. It's less of a "game" to me, as it is incubator for emergent behavior within the framework of a videogame. Hall's standalone version of the popular ARMA 2 mod serves as test bed for anarchic human behavior without the worry or concern of real-world consequences.

One of my first conversations about the game revolved around exactly this point. A friend made comment that he didn't feel the game was a realistic portrayal of a zombie apocalypse; that other players ruined the experience, made it less "real" to him. I laughed, and replied that that is exactly why DayZ seems realistic to me -- the real monsters in the event of a zombie apocalypse wouldn't be the mindless infected; really, they're nothing more than an obstacle to overcome or avoid. As evidenced by the scenarios in this humorous live-action film based on the game, the real monsters in a world like DayZ would in fact, be those who do what it takes to survive.

Phoenix Wright was almost named 'Roger'

Posted: 14 Dec 2014 02:30 AM PST

The Ace Attorney series has gradually built itself a small but loyal following outside of Japan. One of the reasons for that is how the games offer an experience that you can't get anywhere else in gaming. Their popularity has slowly helped the text-focused, clue-hunting genre to become a little more prominent in gaming, but for the most part, Ace Attorney is a unique series.

Part of that comes from the way the games were translated. The characters and situations in the Ace Attorney series are almost realistic. They may feel slightly familiar to fans of TV lawyer dramas, but the games always find a way to spin off from reality in ways that keep things fresh and original.

Case in point, Ace Attorney lead Phoenix Wright is named Ryūichi Naruhodō in Japan, which according to my one semester of Japanese in college roughly translates to "Rising-Number-One I-Understand-Now". Phoenixes are known for rising and "I understand" and "Right!" can mean the same thing depending on the context so it sort of makes sense, though Alex Smith (original Ace Attorney translation/localization team member) originally suggested he be named "Roger Wright" because of the alliteration and "Also, if you've ever seen the movie Airplane, ['Roger'] is a great source of silly jokes as well. So that seemed like a name with a lot of potential."
