Thimbleweed Park Kickstarter was a joke for five seconds Posted: 12 Dec 2014 11:00 AM PST The Thimbleweed Park Kickstarter is almost over! We're celebrating this historic event with an explosive interview series starring not one, but two amazing middle aged men -- Mr. Ron Gilbert (Monkey Island) and Mr. Gary Winnick (Maniac Mansion). In part one we discover the truth about why Ron and Gary reunited for the project, what makes Maniac Mansion's look worth revisiting, the Kickstarter advantage, and more. Ron talks about his brain in 3rd person a couple of times. It's fun to imagine his brain detaching from his body and hanging out with Purple Tentacle in the basement. Thanks again, Ron and Gary! Make sure to come back tomorrow when we discover why Ron names so many of his games after places and what Gary likes to "fool around" with. (Hint: It's different art styles).
We're doing our GotY awards differently this year Posted: 12 Dec 2014 10:30 AM PST The days when games were tailor made to suit the tastes of a small subset of society are over. You can no longer look at a game and know on sight who it was made for and what hardware it's running on. There are more reasons to play games than ever before, and as such, there are more people playing them than ever as well. That's part of why we're changing the format of our Game of the Year awards. We'll still have the traditional "Game we loved the most" award to cap things off, but before that, we're planning to roll out four categories that look more closely at the distinctly different reasons we might play a videogame in 2014. Those categories are: Excellence in Mechanics, Excellence in World Design, Excellence in Narrative, and Excellence in Multiplayer. Each award will have 12 nominees. For a variety of reasons, these nominees were not selected solely by the popular vote of Destructoid staff. That said, the staff has been encouraged to write in their own favorites and work to usurp the established nominees as they see fit. Just like real life Democracy! So just because you don't see one of your favorite games nominated, that doesn't mean we didn't love it. More so, it may even sneak up like a spooky P.T. ghost and win the award out of nowhere. Surprises! Subjective opinions! The love of videogames! This is what we hope to provide for you with Destructoid's Game of the Year awards 2014. The nominees start next week, and the awards will follow the week after. It'll be fun to see how it all shakes out.
Alienware Alpha receives $50 coupon plus gift card Posted: 12 Dec 2014 10:00 AM PST Dell's Alienware Alpha - also known as the sorta, maybe, not really Steam Machine - gets an official $50 discount today via a limited time coupon on Dell. The incentives don't stop there though, as Dell is also throwing in an additional $50 worth of value in the form of a gift card. While we're not sure if this tactic will move units, you're getting some decent hardware for the price, all things considered.
The most disrespectful push-ups in videogames Posted: 12 Dec 2014 09:30 AM PST Like I was saying to the creators of Pocket Rumble, the minutia is what will make or break a fighting game. All the little moment-to-moment experiences in a given round of combat have to come together to create a vast psychological landscape. That big picture is easy to take for granted unless you take the time to pick it apart now and again. For instance, winning or losing a fight doesn't have to be about how the game defines victory. The player can define victory on their own terms if they choose to. Using the old Dan/Servbot/Amingo team in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and knocking just one of the opponent's characters out of the match is the peak of competitive fighting game majesty for some. For others, taking on all comers with Pichu and surviving a three-minute battle in Super Smash Bros. Melee is the zenith of videogame achievement. Setting a goal and reaching it. That's what winning is all about, regardless of how the game or anyone else judges you. Maybe the Wii Fit Trainer's unorthodox crawl animation in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U will become the next great disrespectful fighting game handicap. Doing a quick set of push-ups while in the middle of a super-powered combat scenario really sends a message. It's a message about priorities, about how seriously you take your opponent, and the importance of doing whatever the heck you want. It's beautiful. So beautiful that I had to write a song about it. Thanks Leonard Nimoy!
I never played Strife, but the remaster looks cool Posted: 12 Dec 2014 09:00 AM PST Night Dive Studios brings old games to Steam, from The 7th Guest to System Shock 2 to Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon. I've heard of most of them, having either been around when they were new or discovering them in the years since, but not Strife. I should know about Strife. It's a first-person shooter with role-playing elements built using the Doom engine so, straight away, they've got me listening. The trailer makes a good first impression. Magneto, too. This remastered Veteran Edition of Strife has optional updated graphics, full key rebinding, and support for higher resolutions. Night Dive also finished some stuff that wasn't completed in the original release, like the multiplayer mode Capture the Chalice. It's the thought that counts. Strife is $7.49 on Steam right now and should be available on GOG.com in a few weeks.
The five best indie games at PlayStation Experience Posted: 12 Dec 2014 08:00 AM PST With regard to games shown at last weekend's PlayStation Experience, Sony had two noticeable strengths: its first-party mega-titles and the projects of its ever-growing stable of independent developers. While PlayStation fans finally got the chance to go hands-on with the publisher's biggest names like The Order: 1886 and Bloodborne, it was the indies along the length of the entire side wall where the true gems could be found. In that sense, PlayStation Experience stepped right in line with all the year's other conventions; in relatively small crowds, players got to move from station to station, and fell in love with new games that they knew little-to-nothing about. Checking out the giant booths is all fine and fun, but ask anyone and they'll tell you that talking to passionate indie devs about their games and playing it at their small, humbling exhibits is the glue that holds community shows together. These were Destructoid's favorite indie games at PlayStation Experience.
Stick it to the Man dev working on another gross game Posted: 12 Dec 2014 07:30 AM PST The off-kilter Stick it to the Man! was a surprise charmer last year with a style and tone that evoked the likes of Rocko's Modern Life and anime of that era. The studio's follow up is Zombie Vikings, a four player co-op adventure starring a bunch of gross zombie vikings trying to retrieve Odin's one good eye that Loki has stolen. There's also talk of some sort of Megazord stitching together of all four characters into one giant zombie. Unlike Stick it to the Man!, Zombie Vikings isn't coming to Vita alongside the PS4 version. Probably because of the co-op focus. It is coming to Steam, though, Release is slated for July 2015.
Friday Night Fights: Return of the Mack Posted: 12 Dec 2014 07:00 AM PST Happy Friday! Well, well, well. Look who decided to jump back in, feet first and host his first Friday Night Fights in over two years. That's right, it's me. The one and only, ChillyBilly. I know, I know, I can hardly believe it myself, but it's true. Lately I've been gaming with some Dtoiders, mostly SuperMonk4Ever & Mr Andy Dixon, and I've realized just how much I've missed the social aspect of gaming.
Final Fantasy Type-0 has a pretty, pricey collector's edition Posted: 12 Dec 2014 06:30 AM PST It's $100 and doesn't even come with a monstrous statue for you to find room for. It does come with: - A 200 page manga that takes place during the game's opening Also, that Final Fantasy XV demo will be exclusive to the first run of this game (whether you pre-order or pick it up early) and won't be released in another form, if that's encouragement. Pre-order directly through Square Enix and you'll be entered to win a custom PS4 or Xbox One.
Review: Destiny: The Dark Below Posted: 12 Dec 2014 06:00 AM PST Having basically played the new Destiny expansion The Dark Below nonstop since launch, I've experienced everything it has to offer. That in itself is an issue, because although I have played more than the average person, to exhaust the content this early isn't a good sign. While Destiny feels just as great as ever, perhaps even more-so due to the design of a few mechanics herein, I can't help but feel underwhelmed just like I did back in September.
OC ReMix celebrates turning 15 with, yep, you guessed it Posted: 12 Dec 2014 05:30 AM PST OverClocked ReMix has given us a ton of amazing remixes over the years. Longer than I realize, sometimes -- the game music community celebrated its 15th anniversary this week. Crazy. For the big one-five, the site has released 15 new remixes from 15 different game systems. You can listen to those here, free of charge. Lot of fun titles on the list, including Chrono Trigger, Demon's Souls, and, haha, Super Mario Sunshine. Here's to 15 more years. Got a favorite OC ReMix album? Mine is Donkey Kong Country 2: Serious Monkey Business.
Bungie: Keep Destiny's Vault of Glass relevant, and fix the rewards Posted: 12 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST The best part of the core Destiny experience at launch was the Vault of Glass raid. It completely blew away everything else the game had to offer, and was on an entirely different level mechanically. Every encounter was unique, it required teamwork, and best of all -- bosses weren't simple rehashes of existing enemies and required a great deal of strategy. But Bungie screwed up with the launch of The Dark Below. A brand new raid called Crota's End has been implemented, and new Exotics picked up throughout the DLC era are now capable of pushing past the 300 attack damage limit -- Exotics other than ones obtained in Vault of Glass that is. Yep, even hard mode gives outdated loot. All of this could be fixed with a simple design choice: keep Vault of Glass below the current Crota gear level, but make it more relevant than it is now. As it stands, all it's good for is farming for shards and outdated Exotics.
Tough but fun roguelike FPS Tower of Guns coming to PS3, PS4, Xbox One Posted: 12 Dec 2014 04:30 AM PST Tower of Guns was in a recent Humble Indie Bundle, which means I played a little of it but didn't stick around quiiite long enough for it to take hold of me. It's good, though! Hard, too. The roguelike first-person shooter originally released this year for PC (review here), and now it's coming to PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in early 2015. This trailer might be crude in presentation but, again, Tower of Guns has proven itself, so do not let that reflect poorly on the game if this is your first time seeing it.
The Vita needs more games like Freedom Wars Posted: 12 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST At every Sony event this year, the portable rhetoric was identical -- the Vita is getting games, but they're ports, or in rare cases, multi-platform releases of existing games. As an original Vita and 32GB memory card owner since day one, I will be the first to tell you that I love playing it when I feel compelled to do so. I'm so glad that I was an early adopter and got to keep that OLED screen, as it's one of the best portable experiences I've ever had. I enjoyed exclusives like Tearaway and Gravity Rush for months on end. It was awesome. Then the games stopped. The Vita still gets the occasional unique game like Toukiden: The Age of Demons, but for the most part, it loses exclusives these days. I'm not against ports and sometimes the Vita is my preferred method of playing them, but the platform is not sustainable without system sellers and exclusives.
Remember the Halo 5 beta? It will launch with spectator options Posted: 12 Dec 2014 03:00 AM PST Halo 5 looks damn good visually, but I'm a bit concerned in terms of the gameplay based on what I've heard so far. Thankfully I'll get a chance to try it out for myself later this month. Yep, the Halo 5 beta is indeed dropping on December 29, just in time for everyone to get back from Christmas vacation. When it does hit 343 Industries will apparently allow Halo Channel and Twitch integration. What does that entail, exactly? Well, you'll be able to access spectator options more easily, and there will be ranked tiers all the way up to "Pro," so you can check out some top-level players in action. All of these features are made to give Halo 5 a more eSports oriented push. Let's see how it works out. Halo 5: Guardians is a tailor-made experience for eSports [IGN]
| Xbox Live Arcade and PS3 ports of After Burner Climax are being discontinued Posted: 12 Dec 2014 02:30 AM PST Another digital game bites the dust. It looks like After Burner Climax will no longer be available on the Xbox Live Arcade (360) or PS3 marketplaces on December 24. For those who aren't aware, the game will no longer be for sale, but you can re-download it if you already own it. Some speculation as to why the game has been pulled involves the rights to actual aircraft that was in Climax. It's a shame to see a game go out like this because of licensing issues -- it would be great if it could be reworked to take out that content, but it likely isn't worth the effort. | 2D fighter Dynamite Bomb is getting localized Posted: 12 Dec 2014 02:00 AM PST Intro 2D fighters? The flashy Dynamite Bomb is getting a localization, according to the game distribution company Playism. It will arrive in English, and it will be a full port of the 2013 edition of the game plus all the free updates and add-ons. I miss the days when I could play five or six fighters a week. Back when it was much easier to get a group of friends together to practice and play, I could go through multiple fighters in a day, soaking up each mechanic bit by bit. With all of my competition now in the real world working, it's really tough to meet up, even online. Playism [Twitter] Thanks John! |
The first batch of Call of Duty DLC weapons are live now for Xbox owners Posted: 12 Dec 2014 01:00 AM PST Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is still truckin', and although the first DLC pack hasn't officially dropped yet, Season Pass owners get free weapon DLC early. Of course, I meant to say "Xbox owners" get said weapons first. Starting now you can go download the weapon pack before the Havoc add-on drops. It comes with an energy assault rifle and an alternative skin. Yep, this just ended the console wars people.
The 18th Pokémon movie is Pokémon the Movie XY 2015 Posted: 12 Dec 2014 12:30 AM PST It feels like just a year ago we were hearing about the 17th Pokemon movie, but actually it was 11 months ago. Pokémon XY: Cocoon of Destruction is released July 19, 2014 in Japan. Its follow up, Pokémon the Movie XY 2015, is slated for July 18, 2015 in Japan. Almost a year to the day! It will feature Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire fame, per the above teaser. I think I had a dream about the first Pokemon movie, those ancient Mew cards, and the little gold slabs. Weird! Maybe I have a seventh sense for Pokemon flicks. My sixth sense is for when someone scrolls past my selfies without favoriting.
That ThinkGeek Mega Buster replica is now available Posted: 12 Dec 2014 12:00 AM PST I was just playing through Mega Man 4 the other day, and man does the Mega Buster still feel good. The whole game does actually -- all of the NES titles have aged quite well. If you want to relive those moments in real life, ThinkGeek is now selling its Mega Buster replica for $79.99. To recap, it has flashing lights and sounds, so you can run around your house and go "pew pew" to your heart's desire. Mega Man Mega Buster Gun Replica [ThinkGeek]
Ninja Theory is working on another project that's not Hellblade Posted: 11 Dec 2014 11:00 PM PST Ninja Theory is hard at work on Hellblade, their latest action game for the PS4. According to a recent update development for the title is "at full pace," but they seem to have another trick up their sleeve. The developer has confirmed a "different project," that's in the works, and they'll dole out more information on Monday. Is it a new IP? Or a sequel to the beloved Enslaved? Are they resurrecting Kung-Fu Chaos? We'll have to wait to find out. I really hope it's not a sequel to Fightback. NinjaTheory [Twitter]
And the top three selling amiibo figures are... Posted: 11 Dec 2014 09:00 PM PST Ah, the amiibo saga. It's been a wild ride that not even Mr. Toad would go on. But as we continue through this tough journey together, Nintendo has sent word over that they are doing very well, and are "approximately equal" to the sales for Super Smash Bros. Wii U. But the most interesting bit out of the statement was the reveal of the top three selling amiibo. Ready? It's Link, Mario, and Pikachu -- in that order. I can easily see why Link is the top pick, because he's the only amiibo that works with three games at launch. Pikachu also makes perfect sense, and the selling power of Mario is still real, apparently. My personal favorite figure is Mario in terms of quality, as the fireball effect looks really good in person, so it makes sense.
New Fossil Echo trailer shows off its Oddworld influence Posted: 11 Dec 2014 04:00 PM PST When we first saw Fossil Echo earlier this year, all we really had to go on was its sharp cartoon art style and a list of influences: Shadow of the Colossus, Studio Ghibli films, and Oddworld. Some of those influences were apparent; the main character design looks like a direct homage to Wander from Shadow of the Colossus, and the eerie environments do evoke Miyazaki in a way. The Oddworld influence was not as easy to spot, but it is more apparent now. On his way to climb the tower, the boy at the center of the story employs platforming and stealth in two dimensions, not unlike Abe from the first two Oddworld titles. No word yet if there will be a fart button. Now that the team has some gameplay to show, Fossil Echo is up on Steam Greenlight, with hopes to release some time in 2015.
