Dreamweaver's top 10 favorite Smash characters!

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 12:00 PM PST

[Dtoid community member Dreamweaver shares his top 10 favorite Smash characters! Read his list then share with your favorites in the comments. Does anyone actually read this part? I'm so alone. So utterly alone. Want to see your own stuff appear on the front page? Go write something! --Occams Electric Toothbrush]

Another console generation has started, so that means another Super Smash Bros. has arrived! I've been playing Smash Bros. since the series first dropped on the Nintendo 64, and I always anticipate every release! While my excitement might've dwindled a bit due to Super Smash Bros. Brawl being available on the Wii, as well as the slower pace and huge levels, this new entry reminds me of how much I love playing these games! As tribute to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U being the awesome game that it is, I'm hyped enough to make a couple of lists, starting with this!

Hold it! You need to pick up Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 11:30 AM PST

I was in high school when I first got my hands on the original Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. As a visual novel addict, it sated my thirst for something new and exciting in the handheld space, and even inspired a brief stint where I entertained fleeting thoughts that I might want to become a prosecutor myself one day.

Thankfully, I waved those thoughts away and simply powered through the game, even when it frustrated me beyond belief. The "lawyer simulator," as it were, was novel in several ways, but memorable in many more. Back during the infancy of the DS, a time where we saw games like Feel the Magic: XY/XX and Pac-Pix hitting store shelves (where are those types of games now?) it was a magical time. Phoenix Wright still feels like part of the pack to me these days, and the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy is just as fantastic as you remember it.

This map shows where to find Pokémon in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 11:00 AM PST

On my journey to obtain every Pokémon in X/Y (and eventually give many of them away; no regrets!), this map of catchable Pokémon created by reddit user Bobdor was instrumental. It got my Pokédex off to a great start and helped familiarize me with the then-unfamiliar Kalos region.

Bob has since come out with a similar map for Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire showing where to find Pokémon in Hoenn and what, if anything extra, you'll need to catch them. So helpful.

I'm not playing the remakes yet -- I'll wait until I don't have quite as many games fighting for my attention, most likely -- but plenty of you are. Hope this serves you well.

NIS might go out of business if Disgaea 5 doesn't sell

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 08:30 AM PST

[Update: NIS of America has reached out to us to update this story. According to the publisher, the statement made by president Sohei Niikawa was originally meant to be self-depreciating humor. The original spirit of the quote was meant to convey that Niikawa might be fired if Disgaea 5 didn't hit its sales target.

NIS released another quote from Niikawa to clarify, saying "If Disgaea 5 does not sell as planned, I, as the producer, might need to leave the Japanese gaming industry. (LOL)" He added that the original comment "in no way mean(t) or impl(ied) that Nippon Ichi Software as a company is going bankrupt or is in financial difficult(y)."]

To commemorate PlayStation's 20th anniversary, Japanese gaming magazine Dengeki PlayStation is asking 107 Japanese developers to comment on Sony's platform and to post updates about their studios. Predictably, most are positive and upbeat. However, Nippon Ichi Software has a surprisingly grim message.

As translated by NeoGAF, NIS' future hinges on the performance of upcoming Disgaea 5. "If Disgaea 5 doesn't sell as planned, then we might not still be in business the year after," the publisher said. To make matters worse, Disgaea 5 releases the same day as Bloodborne -- a highly anticipated PS4 exclusive.

NIS is shooting for 150,000 sales in Japan. That seems like quite the tall order -- especially for a country that isn't great at supporting console games, and with Bloodborne as a direct competitor. Things aren't exactly looking up, but hopefully something fortunate happens to keep this beloved niche company around.

Rumor: Sega has a crush on Nintendo

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 08:00 AM PST

Rumors are the best. They might be true. They might not. Who knows? It's the imagination's equivalent of having sex on ecstasy. Sexstasy. It's rumors that make the Internet go 'round.

Hey, we're on the Internet! It's probably about time we started some rumors for once. The popular kids in school used to do it, and look how popular they were! Now we just have to think up a good one, and spread it around the Internet and see what happens.

I once poked a hornet's nest to see what would happen. It was a really bad idea. Luckily, rumors are completely harmless and my pal Hamza says as long as you specify it's a rumor there will never be consequences for your actions. It's off to the rumor mill, then, let's mill some rumors!

Hmm, let's see... I hear EA hooked up with Ubisoft at the party last weekend. Nah, too easy. Rockstar's dad sells drugs down by the 7-Eleven. Ngh, not good enough. Word on the playground is XSEED and Atlus are an item now. Yeah, Atari saw them holding hands down by the swingsets and -- No, no, no! We need something better. Something more believable, but totally scandalous.

Wait, wait, wait... Did you guys hear? Konami told Sierra that Sega has a crush on Nintendo. He always has. Oh my God, it makes so much sense! Sega was always picking on Nintendo when they were younger. Remember when he randomly kicked her in the shin, and then ran away and told everyone she had cooties? Yeah... Wow! I think we've really stumbled onto something here.

Now it's like they're sort of friends. I think I've seen them playing footsie under the table, even! Oh my God, what if it's true, you guys? What if it's actually true? Hurry! Tell everyone!

Broken Age coming to PS4, Vita alongside Act 2 PC release

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 07:30 AM PST

Rounding out the trend of Double Fine games coming to Sony's consoles just short of Massive Chalice, which you should all be playing, is Broken Age. It began as the Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter that exploded, the first act came out almost a year ago, and the concluding act is slated for early 2015.

When Act 2 does release on PC, the "complete adventure" will simultaneously release on PS4 and PlayStation Vita.

In my head, I'm just havin' a lil fun pronouncing the "Age" in Broken Age as ah-gay, like if you were going to make some chicken karaage.  Maybe try it out for yourself!

I wish I had the artistic talent to make a sweet Charizard Game Boy

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 07:00 AM PST

You can't comprehend how bad I am at drawing and painting. Impossibly bad. Like, I'm not positive I'd pass a kindergarten class if that's a thing five year-olds get judged on.

Then there are people like this who can flawlessly knock out a Charizard on the cover of a Game Boy. Seemingly no effort put into it, just perfect stroke after perfect stroke. The result is simply wonderful.

And hey, the artist picked the correct starter, too!

I doubt you have 4 controllers, but Gang Beasts is coming to PS4

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 06:45 AM PST

Over the weekend, Double Fine announced that the drunkard-on-ice-skates brawler would be making its way to PlayStation 4 next year, the same day it launches on PC (getting out of its current Early Access availability).

Gang Beasts is fun as hell, but does anyone actually own four PS4 controllers? If so, maybe lend your pal Steven a few bones, Mr. Moneybags. I'll stick with PC until then. Actually, over at casa mia we just bought a bunch of wired 360 controllers after a weekend of local multiplayer mildly hamstrung by having to get four DualShock 3's working on a Mac.

Super Smash Bros. causes surge in Wii U sales in Japan

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 06:30 AM PST

The Japanese market certainly loves its handheld devices, but for at least one week, a console game is king. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U was the top selling title in Japan this week, moving 227,527 units in the first few days since its release. Rounding out the top five were four 3DS games -- Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire, Derby Stallion Gold, Aikatsu! 365-Hi no Idol Days, and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS.

Predictably, there was a substantial increase in Wii U sales corresponding to the release of Super Smash Bros. The Nintendo console nearly doubled its week-over-week figures with 24,469 units sold. That was good enough for fourth place on the hardware rankings; the New 3DS XL, original 3DS, and New 3DS all beat it out. The next best performing console was the PS4 with 15,971 sales.

Seeing how it's dominating both the software and hardware charts, it's a good time to be Nintendo -- at least in Japan.

Remastered Grim Fandango looks great, out next month

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 06:15 AM PST

I know a skeleton of people are waiting to play this, what with it being a chore to track down a playable copy of the classic adventure game. And now we get an even more playable, modernized version with nicer textures and smoother controls. Good things come to those who wait every once in a while

Next month, January 27, Grim Fandango will be easily playable and downloadable, as it should be. It will be available on PS4, Vita, PC, Mac, and Linux.

Did you know there's a Chain Chomp in Hyrule Warriors?

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 06:00 AM PST

I'm on track to put more time into Hyrule Warriors than any other videogame in 2014.

This is coming from someone who has spent, at most, half an hour with Omega Force's past titles. I may not be a Dynasty Warriors fan -- and, hell, I'm often indifferent to the Zelda series -- but combine the former's hack-and-slash action with the latter's characters and lore and I'm all in.

It helps that this is one seriously content-dense game; it's easy to rack up the hours once you're committed to Adventure Mode. Its sprawling first map has you playing and replaying missions to unlock new characters, weapons, and one-use items that, if used correctly, can unlock even more rewards. Months after Hyrule Warriors' launch, I've only just this week gained access to the entire map; I still have to go back in and A-rank most of it using unfamiliar, underleveled warriors. Oh boy.

Also, thanks to continued post-release support, there's now the Master Quest and Twilight maps to worry about. My treasured Link is going to max out at level 150 before I know it.

For all the enjoyment this game has given me, I thought a little shout-out was in order. Hyrule Warriors is everything I hoped it'd be and more, in the case of the special Gauntlets found near the bottom right-hand corner of the main Adventure map. What a tough mission.

Join me. Defeat the forest dragon and come smash some Gorons with a freakin' Chain Chomp.

Happy 21st anniversary to the most important FPS in my life

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 05:00 AM PST

My, how time flies. Today, we're 21 years removed from the launch of one of the most influential videogames ever, Doom. It may not have been the original first-person shooter, but it was certainly the most important one in my life. Well, indirectly.

That prestige actually goes to Final Doom. Back in fourth grade, I made a new friend. We went to his house one day after school. The first thing he wanted to do was to boot up his computer and show me Final Doom. I remember being blown away by how awesome it was.

We weren't taking legit runs at Doom, mind you. IDDQD, IDKFA, and IDCLIP made sure that we could run wherever we wanted and kill whatever we wanted with absolutely no problem. Cyberdemons and Arch-viles fell by the hundreds. And, there was always a squeemish glee to watching a Cacodemon die in a messy pile of gloop.

Finally, some Majora's Mask art that doesn't terrify me

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 04:00 AM PST

Olly Moss is my favorite artist working on game-related prints, though he also makes great posters and even box art. I never seem to be around when his stuff is up for sale, and that, well, that doesn't change today with these limited-edition The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask prints.

I slept in too late to make it in time for the three-piece set, but we can still look, damn it.

Wonder what the Moon would look like in this style. He wouldn't haunt my dreams, that's for sure.

Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker is coming westward

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 03:00 AM PST

Atlus has sent word that Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker will be heading westward. Due in 2015, the game is exclusive to 3DS. This won't be a straight port, though.

For those unaware, this is an enhanced version of the DS game. Extras include a re-localization with full English voicework and a new episode, which apparently doubles the length of the game.

Yep, I'm interested!

Sean Bean does not simply narrate an indie game

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 02:30 AM PST

It can be a challenge these days, getting people to notice your game. There are thousands out there, all of them competing for limited mind share. It's critical to find a way to set your product apart from the competition and give folks a reason to pay attention.

Star power certainly goes a long way, as IMGN.PRO is seemingly well aware. The Polish studio has enlisted the services of actor Sean Bean, who you probably know for his roles in The Lord of the Rings, GoldenEye and Game of Thrones.

The British actor is lending his vocal talents to narrate Kholat, a horror game inspired by the Dyatlov Pass incident. You'll be tasked with uncovering the mystery behind why nine Russian hikers mysteriously died on the east shoulder of Kholat Syakhl in the Ural Mountains.

IMGN.PRO previously has had a hand in helping games like Euro Truck Simulator and Dreamfall Chapters come to market. Now working on its first internally developed project, the studio plans to release Kholat on Windows PC and Mac in the second quarter of 2015.

Wow! Tron Bonne and Mega Man 8 are coming to the Japanese PSN

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 02:00 AM PST

In addition to Mega Man Legends 2 and Mega Man X3The Misadventures of Tron Bonne is one of the rarest Mega Man games there is. Thankfully, it's coming to the PSN in Japan, alongside of Mega Man 8 (one of my personal favorites), and Rockman Battle & Chase (which is only available by way of the Mega Man X Collection in the US). Of course, you can still buy them using a Japanese PSN account.

While I'm excited for fellow Japanese Mega Man fans, I'm hoping the PSN scene over in the US shapes up soon. We have Mega Man 1-4 as PSOne Classics, but not 5 or 6, much less 8. I get the licensing issues with some games, which are forced on the marketplace as PSP classics, but surely the original NES series can be completed.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse may hit the Wii U this year

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 01:00 AM PST

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is a pretty great Metroidvania title that hit the 3DS earlier this year. It was a continuation of the series following Risky's Revenge, and will lead into Half-Genie Hero which hopefully will be coming in 2015.

A Wii U version was always in the works for Curse, and according to WayForward, the final approval process has begun, and we may see it as early as 2014. Hopefully everything goes as planned and a new audience will be able to enjoy the game.

Final Fantasy XIV deploys marriage patch this week

Posted: 10 Dec 2014 12:00 AM PST

Want to get married in Final Fantasy XIV? Now is your time. The Ceremony of Eternal Bonding is now live, and to get married, all you have to do is submit an application on the Mog Station portal. Up to 80 guests can attend, and there's a free option as well as two "packages" for real cash with extra oomph, where guests can obtain special gifts.

Included with the above video is a humorous montage of avatars falling in love, followed by footage of the actual event. While a number of MMOs have this feature, it's nice to see it in Final Fantasy, and I'm looking forward to the cute proposal videos.

Also, the ring magically appears on your finger, and a Moogle officiates the wedding. Amazing!

Square Enix announces Theatrhythm Dragon Quest

Posted: 09 Dec 2014 05:00 PM PST

Theatrhythm isn't just a Final Fantasy spin-off anymore; it's an established brand, one Square Enix hopes to expand into a full series of rhythm games based on its classic properties.

Theatrhythm Dragon Quest is the next step on that journey, heading to Nintendo 3DS in Japan on March 26, 2015. We'll get our first look at the game following its debut next weekend at Jump Festa in Chiba, Japan.
