No items, eight foxes only is your Final Destination

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 02:30 PM PST

Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U will always be remembered as the game that brought eight-player simultaneous combat to the series. Playing a fully populated match in the new Smash is like watching the same movie on five different screens at the same time, with each screen starting at a different scene in the film. Your brain can process everything properly for a second or two before its forcibly derailed or distracted, only to have it refocus again, then derail again, and so forth, all while fighting for your life in the process. This is what it must be like to have a swarm of bees live in your skull in the place where your brain should be.

What if this newly minted chaos was combined with the old-fashioned, no items, Fox only, Final Destination, serious-business style of Smash Bros. play? Sadly, we may never know, as Smash Bros. for the Wii U doesn't let you play with seven opponents on Final Destination. You can see the moment where the guy trying to choose that stage is denied his ambitions, and his heart sinks.

He chose Big Battlefield instead, and it's just as well. It's about the backdrop anyway. It's about the futile struggle to keep an eight-player orgy of cartoon violence as "fair and balanced" of a fight as possible.

All those Arwings flying in at the beginning is glorious.

Half an hour of damn good cosplay at Dragon Con

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 02:00 PM PST

Come for the pole-dancing Bigby Wolf cosplay (1:26), stay for the "Walk the Dinosaur" remix.

The video's title is accurate -- "The Really Long Dragon Con 2014 Video," indeed -- but it's Beat Down Boogie. If I can make it through the whole thing, you can, too. Or just look at the photos.

My other favorite costumes are Doctor Octopus (9:07), Yoda (11:18), the Street Fighter continue screen (11:45), and Red from Transistor (20:38). There are even a couple of proposals.

Bladestorm: Nightmare is a historical game with evil Joan of Arc and dragons

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 12:00 PM PST

I didn't play 2007's Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War, but I might play Bladestorm: Nightmare, an expanded version of the real-time tactics game for PS3, PS4, and Xbox One.

The core remains the same -- you still side with England or France in battles inspired by historical events -- but a separate Nightmare mode adds fantasy creatures, hence my sudden interest. This new story has dragons, griffins, and, haha, you're seeing this cyclops, right?

France and England will need to join forces to stop an evil form of Joan of Arc and her monster army. The mode might be called Nightmare but it sounds like a dream come true.

Bladestorm releases for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ($59.99) and PlayStation 3 ($49.99; only via PlayStation Network) on March 3, 2015.

Hey kids, don't take any fake Nintendo-branded ecstasy you're offered

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 11:30 AM PST

Listen up, youths of the world. Gather 'round as Excellent Role Model Brett gives you a lesson on the cold, hard realities of life.

Sometimes you might find yourself with all your friends in a really cool club in England having a great night. That's awesome. "Viva la Macclesfield, Cheshire!" as the saying goes. But, if anyone offers you a Nintendo-branded pill and tells you that you'll have an even better time, don't trust them.

You see, that pill won't give you the happy moments like when you play Duck Hunt for hours on end. No, it'll make you "roll" for hours on end, because that pill was ecstacy and you just did drugs and drugs are bad. And, Nintendo most certainly does not endorse illicit amphetamine use, so you can be sure that these tricksters are using fake branding because they're caught up in their trickster ways.

Unfortunately, it's probably an inevitability that you'll eventually be offered drugs, so when that moment presents itself, calmly reply "Destructoid is MY anti-drug!" Everyone will know what you mean, and, more importantly, they'll respect you far more than if you popped their dumb pills.

We played Binding of Isaac: Rebirth because we haven't had a good cry in a while

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 11:00 AM PST

Max and I started playing The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth because it's a good-ass game, and we like to do gaming. Max has actually never played any iteration of Binding of Isaac before, so I let him go first, knowing that I'd only have to wait a few minutes before my turn.

This game looks like one of the best uses of Kinect or PS Eye I've seen yet

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 10:30 AM PST

Console camera peripherals are often neat in theory, but fall flat in practice. Turns out that very few people actually want to use the damned things to try to control their games. But, what if they were only used to control the landscape instead of the action?

That's what ID@Xbox-published title Commander Cherry's Puzzled Journey does. It has the player pose for selfies in various yoga-like positions that create the physical setting for the levels. Then, with a controller, the player navigates across the snapshot of their body.

This recently released video nicely shows how this clever concept is implemented. There are plenty of additional obstacles, and sometimes the game requires chiseling away at your own body with a laser beam.

There's no word on release date yet apart from the nebulous timeframe of 2015, but it'll be coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Obviously this is something that those people without a Kinect or PlayStation Eye will have to miss out on.

The competitive conundrum

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 10:00 AM PST

[Dtoid community member TheAngriestCarp waxes poetic on the trials and tribulations of competitive gaming. I feel like we can all relate to at least some part of this blog. Want to see your own stuff appear on the front page? Go write something! --Occams Electric Toothbrush]

Picture this. You're thirty-five minutes into your first online match of Dota 2. You've spent hours and hours grinding away in the tutorials and against bots. You've read guides, watched matches, and you finally felt ready to take on the big guys. The sweat drips off your brow as you and your companions' cast of eclectic characters push your way up the middle lane, taking out enemy monsters and pounding away at their watchtowers. You stay back to protect your team while they push ahead.

No Smash Bros. DLC after Mewtwo 'experiment'

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 09:45 AM PST

Mewtwo is coming to Super Smash Bros. next spring, but Masahiro Sakurai explained to IGN that, "releasing that character is an experiment meant to act as a foothold in content distribution; thus it's simply meant as part of the service we're providing to gamers."

Speaking to Videogamer, Sakurai said the studio is not working on any other Super Smash Bros. DLC at the moment.

"I understand that DLC could add a lot to the appeal of Smash Bros., and I appreciate that a major part of the excitement for these games come from which characters will appear in the roster, so I think fans could really enjoy DLC that could keep this excitement going. However, I think there might be criticism that we are cutting up content to sell characters one by one, or that we are adding things later that should have been there from the start.

...what I can say now about paid DLC is that we aren't working on anything at the moment. We've put all our efforts into making the actual game. Creating DLC would involve large additional costs and require the involvement of a lot of people."

Who wants to watch a bunch of gaming consoles get shredded?

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 09:30 AM PST

As it turns out, videogame consoles don't hold up very well against an industrial shredder. Who would have thought? Looking at them all gathered in a giant pile of metallic dust, it's like the tech equivalent to humans are all just bags of meat.

Although, I half expected the original Xbox to break the shredder and emerge unscathed.

More amiibo exclusivity: Best Buy has dibs on Meta Knight

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 09:00 AM PST

It's been known that in order to collect all the amiibo Nintendo plans on releasing, consumers will have to do some scrambling from store to store. If those are your intentions, you'll need to include a trip to the giant yellow price tag to your plans.

The second instance of a retailer-exclusive amiibo has been revealed -- Meta Knight from the Kirby franchise, and it'll only be sold at Best Buy. According to Best Buy's corporate site, it'll debut in early 2015.

Shulk from Xenoblade Chronicles was the first amiibo announced as exclusive to a particular store; GameStop has the rights to that figurine. It's a trend that'll most likely be prominent, especially if the popularity of amiibo takes off as Nintendo seemingly expects it to. At least prospective collectors can take solace in knowing that there are plenty of amiibo deals out there lighten the financial strain.

We're starting to lose our patience with Ass Creed: Unity

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 08:45 AM PST

Max and I are still working our way through the first hour of Assassin's Creed: Unity. I really like re-watching this part of our playthrough because every time I do, I see a new NPC twitching or jostling around. Also, we made jokes about reality television and stuff.

Even failing looks fun in Heat Signature

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 08:30 AM PST

Just like with Gunpoint, it's a joy to watch designer Tom Francis play Heat Signature, wonky wrench physics and all, while it's still in development. It's as if he's making the game solely for himself and, hey, if the rest of us also happen to get a kick out of hijacking spaceships, that's a bonus.

We got our first look at Heat Signature's proper art last week, and here it is up and running. Love the bit where guards gun down Tom's character and unceremoniously chuck him into space, forcing him to remote-control his ship to pick up his body before too much blood is lost.

The only awkward, live-action, gory Smash Bros. video you need today

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 08:00 AM PST

Are you excited for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U? You should be. Chris "Barack Obama" Carter says it's 9.5 good. That's not 9.5 out of like 3 billion. That's 9.5 out of 10.

Some people that are certainly appropriately enthused for Smash Bros. are the ones in this video. I don't really have words for what's going on, so I'll let the clip speak for itself.

Mario Kart 8's take on Mute City recreated in F-Zero X

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 07:30 AM PST

Mute City is my favorite DLC track in Mario Kart 8. Like, it's not even close.

Nintendo doesn't seem all that interested in making a new F-Zero, but at least we have dedicated fans out there keeping the series alive. Take this custom F-Zero X track by YouTube user Uchiha Madao, via NeoGAF: it's based on Mute City as it appears in Mario Kart 8.

"This track turned out pretty well but I had to tweak some parts because FZX's physics are more dangerous (the part where the cylinder joins the track is upside down and that is insta-death in FZX normally)," writes Uchiha. I didn't even know there was a track editor for the game -- an Expansion Kit was released in Japan -- much less that people were making courses like this.

Gosh, that's cool. I'm gonna have the song in my head all day.

Holy summoned triceratops, Lost Ark looks fantastic

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 07:00 AM PST

The video above is a little on the long side, but it is worth watching. It usually takes a lot to get me interested in anything fantasy-themed (more like Bored of the Rings, right?), but Lost Ark looks like it might be the exception to the rule. It starts off with some beautiful vistas, which are soon cut into by an invading demon army.

The first hero shown might win the 2014 award for most absurd sword, with something that looks more like a Tyrannosaurus rex tail than anything else. Combat looks like a cross between Diablo and Bayonetta, with special abilities on cooldown that have huge areas of effect, summoning fiery bird-things and a giant foot. Maybe it's just me, but some of the boss battles remind me of more sinister versions of the dragon encounter in Captain Toad than anything else. Yeah, that's probably just me.

As a Korean-developed title, there is no word currently on localization Western territories, but any who can get past the language barrier can sign up for the beta now.

No Man's Sky planning 'something different' at PlayStation Experience

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 06:30 AM PST

I've been excited for No Man's Sky for almost a years' time now, but it has become a passive excitement as I wait patiently for it to release. This video, what with some footage I haven't seen and it generally looking ace, has my ears pricked up.

I wish I was attending the PlayStation Experience event next month. On one hand, Vegas. Gross. On the other hand, whatever the hell "A Night Under No Man's Sky is." I'm imagining a retractable roof and real life Interstellar visuals, but then remembered light pollution (and, again, Vegas). Maybe some sort of cool digital projection, then, instead of the actual majesty of our stars. Or No Man's Sky played above on a giant IMAX screen.

Did Blizzard kill my dreams for a City of Heroes successor?

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 06:00 AM PST

Spending the last week hearing how great Warlords of Draenor is has put me in a funk. I fondly remember my MMO days, but I've never been able to love another one since City of Heroes was shut down. It left a death-ray-shaped hole in my heart that Orcs, wizards, and dragons just can't fill. Hearing about people exploring new content, experimenting with balance changes, and re-energizing their old guild networks just rubs it in that my rooftop-jumping, spandex-wearing days are over.

Already feeling glum and jealous, I came to a dark realization. If Overwatch was made with re-used assets from Blizzard's scrapped Titan project, and it's all about cartoony-looking superheroes mixing it up in a Pixar-esque world, does that mean Blizzard was working on its own superhero MMO? And they killed it?

My funk just nosedived into full-blown depression.

Why didn't anyone tell me you can become a cat in Grand Theft Auto V?

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 05:30 AM PST

Yesterday, I saw that Grand Theft Auto V video of Franklin consuming a peyote plant and hallucinating he was a chicken which, because this is a videogame, meant the player got to actually control a chicken. Hah. Nice one, Rockstar. But then I moved on with my day.

If only I had dug a little deeper. I would've seen that the chicken is just one of many potential hallucinations, several of which are shown in this video from CVG. There are 27 peyote plants to find and their psychoactive properties will morph you into a random animal.

You can soar around Los Santos as a seagull, hawk, or crow; maul people as a mountain lion or coyote; and, best of all, run around doing cat stuff until a security guard feels so threatened by your antics that he wails on you with a nightstick. Let's get a replay of via NeoGAF:

Titanfall drops an all-inclusive Deluxe edition from the sky

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 05:00 AM PST

Surely there will soon be some new pilots in the Titanfall arena looking to rodeo ride some massive mechs. Today, Respawn announced the Deluxe edition of its innovative shooter, which is functionally similar to "game of the year" editions of other titles.

Included in this new package are the base Titanfall game and the Expedition, Frontier's Edge, and IMC Rising expansions. In total, those DLC packs contribute nine additional maps.

The Deluxe Edition will be available digitally on Xbox One on November 25 for $50. PC players can access it right now through Origin for $40. No physical versions were announced.

Here's how you unlock everything in Smash Bros. Wii U

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 03:30 AM PST

Just like Super Smash Bros. 3DS, the unlock conditions are fairly relaxed in the Wii U version. Of course there is at least one stage that's hidden behind a specific unlock condition, and most of the stage unlocks aren't apparent at first.

Although this doesn't spoil any stage specifically, I'd refrain from reading the comments if you want to be surprised.

Here's how Nintendo's amiibo figures work, and how they interact with Smash Bros.

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 03:01 AM PST

Nintendo's long awaited foray into the toy market is here: the amiibo are ready for purchase, and the flagship game, Super Smash Bros., is right on the horizon.

While the toys look great in person and the setup is painless, so far the actual interactivity is underwhelming. Collector itch aside, I'd definitely recommend waiting until more compatible games are out before committing to any purchases.

Review: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 03:00 AM PST

Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS was everything I hoped it would be. It rekindled my love for the franchise after my group of friends and I lost interest due to Brawl, and I'm playing online more often than I would with most fighting games. In pretty much every aspect, the game is a success in my eyes, and it seems that sales agree.

But of course the main event is one that can be seen on a glorious television, with four (now eight) players all clamoring over some drinks and having a great time. In that regard, Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U might be the best iteration yet.

The Jackbox Party Pack looks like it'll be fun with friends over

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 02:00 AM PST

Jackbox Games (formerly Jellyvision Games) was responsible for my favorite quizshow videogame of all time -- You Don't Know Jack -- so I'm always anxious to see what they can do in the current era. Recently they've been developing a string of games that have full smartphone and tablet support, so that a large number of players can use them own phones as controllers, eliminating the need to buy four for your platform of choice.

Their newest release The Jackbox Party Pack, incorporates that philosophy on the PS4, PS3, and Xbox One. It comes with five games -- You Don't Know Jack 2015, Drawful, Word Spud, Lie Swatter, and Fibbage. I can personally vouch for You Don't Know Jack and Fibbage, as they've created countless hours of entertainment whenever I have friends over.

It's $25 which is pretty steep at first glance, but there are trials for a few of the games in the pack.

This Splatoon 60fps trailer is just hnnngh

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 01:00 AM PST

Splatoon came out of nowhere, and it shot into my most anticipated list of 2015. As an unconventional shooter it looks pretty great, and the constant morphing from human to squid looks like it has a lot of value on a tactical level.

Although this trailer isn't new, Nintendo has uploaded another version of it that runs at 60fps, so give it a go!

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is coming to the PS4 and Xbox One

Posted: 19 Nov 2014 12:00 AM PST

In an expected move, Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams was released in 2009, and it actually did quite well critically. Since then the game was released on the 360, PS3, and Wii U, and now it's gearing up for an Xbox One and PS4 release next month.

All of the DLC will arrive alongside of the PC-exclusive content, and it will run in 1080p. If you've always been interested in trying it out, December would be a good time.
