Smash Bros. for 3DS gets a demo in Japan Posted: 09 Sep 2014 02:00 PM PDT Super Smash Bros for the 3DS releases this Friday in Japan. Hordes of Smash Bros fans have already blocked off their weekends to play, stream, and discuss the game to their hearts content. We've even got Smash Bros. E3 tournament champion Gonzalo Barrios on Sup Holmes this Sunday to help celebrate. He's streaming the demo right now. Yep, in a move that is growing more and more typical of Nintendo these days, a surprise demo for the game just popped up on the Japanese 3DS eShop. Only five characters are available, Sort of skimpy, but we do get a look at what's probably the full game's initial roster and some of the alternate costumes and color schemes for each character. Lets hope this demo gets out of Japan soon.
| Report: Microsoft trying to buy Minecraft developer Posted: 09 Sep 2014 12:30 PM PDT Microsoft is in serious talks to purchase Minecraft developer Mojang, according to a WSJ report citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation. The supposed deal is said to be worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $2 billion, and could be signed as early as this week. Earlier this summer, Mojang founder Markus "Notch" Persson had this to say about acquisition: "Mojang does not exist to make as much money as possible for the owners. As the majority shareholder, I’d know. Every time a big money making deal comes up that would make a lot of money, it’s of course very tempting, but at the end of the day we choose to do what either makes the most sense for our products, or the things that seem like fun for us at Mojang," Persson wrote in a June blog post. That same month, Mojang business analyst Patrick Geuder revealed Minecraft was near 54 million copies sold across all platforms. The title officially launched in 2011 following a two-year beta. | Creative Assembly will unveil the next Total War this month Posted: 09 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT Later this month at EGX London (formerly Eurogamer Expo), Total War studio Creative Assembly will "reveal" the next installment in its popular strategy franchise. The announcement will be a part of a developer session scheduled for 8:00am Pacific on Thursday, September 25. It will be streamed on Twitch, thankfully. I'm not one to normally keep tabs on EGX, but I'll have to make an exception for this and the session before it, a new project from OlliOlli and Not a Hero developer Roll7. |
Neverending Nightmares is eerily evocative, and set for release on September 26 Posted: 09 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT It's certainly an exciting time to be an independent game developer. With the rise of Kickstarter allowing anyone with the knowledge, the skills, and an idea to find support, we're seeing a larger breadth of games come out that try something a bit different. One such game is Neverending Nightmares, and last year Jonathan Holmes wrote up a nice post about its Kickstarter campaign. After a few ups and downs, the Kickstarter for this evocative horror title managed to make its funding goal. With release set for September 26, the developers are finally ready to unleash their survival horror game that's far more personal than most would realize. At PAX Prime 2014, I got the chance to check out an updated build and chat with some of the talent behind the game.
Sony isn't sure anyone will beat Bloodborne's TGS demo Posted: 09 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT Bloodborne producer Masaaki Yamagiwa tweeted, translation via Dual Shockers, "Let's prepare a prize for those that beat the boss in the demo of Bloodborne at Tokyo Game Show! Now that I selfishly said this, Kitaon will be willing to provide something for sure." Sony's Yasuhiro Kitao -- "Kitaon" -- responded, "Roger! let’s prepare something for this long-awaited opportunity, But will someone who can really beat the boss appear, I wonder… Today there not a single one managed to beat the boss in the play testing session in the sales department… "The only thing that’s certain is that it’s not easy." On my honor, friends, I will fail spectacularly and not beat it because I am bad. I'm sure some of the super fans down to wait in line for hours are capable enough to best it, though. Any winner should suggest Kitao offer Gravity Rush 2 news as a prize. Sony Producer Challenges Fans To Beat Bloodborne’s Demo at TGS; No One Managed in Internal Test Meeting [Dual Shockers]
Close to 0% of Steam users own Gunpoint Posted: 09 Sep 2014 09:30 AM PDT Humble Indie Bundle 12 is up. Pay what you want for Steamworld Dig, Hammerwatch, and Gunpoint. Pay above the average ($7.60 at the moment) and Papers, Please, Gone Home, and Luftrausers are included. Ten bucks adds Prison Architect. Gunpoint (it's good!) developer Tom Francis took to Twitter to reveal a sort of interesting fact that demonstrates just how big Steam has become: "I know it can feel like 'Everyone has it by now!' so here's an interesting stat: to the nearest percent, 0% of Steam users own Gunpoint. "That's how big Steam is, you can live in the 0%." And Francis is living in that 0%, freed up by Gunpoint's success to work on all sorts of cool projects.
North America gets Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate collector's edition Posted: 09 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is coming out in Japan next month. The rest of us will be waiting until 2015. Perhaps it eases the wait: Capcom announced a Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate collector's edition for North America. It comes with a statue and a bunch of other typical collector's edition junk for $60. Right now, you can only pre-order at Gamestop, but it'll be showing up at other retailers later.
Starbound dev working on a much needed pirate game Posted: 09 Sep 2014 08:30 AM PDT Never enough good pirate games. Risen? No. Black Flag? Stop. Chucklefish, developer of Starbound and publisher of Risk of Rain and other good stuff, has announced its new game, Wayward Tide. The top down, piratical action game supports up to four players (local or online), puzzle solving, trap avoidance, five styled islands randomly generated upon each death, and full mod support.
Team Fortress 2sdays: Come on get happy Posted: 09 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT Happy Tuesday!
Sunset Overdrive is getting two campaign add-ons Posted: 09 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT I'm not in the market for season passes, but I still like to look just to see what DLC is lined up. In the case of Sunset Overdrive, Insomniac plans to release two campaign add-ons with "new locations to explore, stories to experience, and bosses to battle" and a weapon pack. There's also a bonus pack with six outfits, two Amps, and two Traps which will be available at launch. The game's season pass covers all of this content for $19.99, amounting to a standard 20 percent discount versus buying the same stuff individually. Also, if you haven't been keeping up with Sunset -- I hadn't been looking too closely -- here's a refresher: Amps are special character abilities and Traps are meant for defense missions, like those found in Chaos Squad, the title's eight-player online co-op mode. Hope that helps.
You already know you want it but here's a Persona Q preview anyway Posted: 09 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT It was almost surreal to be playing Persona Q in English for the first time this past week. It came out of nowhere late last year, a fantasy game mixing Persona 3 and Persona 4 characters in a new 3DS game that uses Etrian Odyssey's engine and dungeon play. I didn't believe the game was real after first hearing about it -- it sounded more like fan fiction! Now I'm playing the very first English language build, just ahead of the North American release.
There is a way to get the Hyrule Warriors scarf in North America Posted: 09 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT In Japan, there's a Hyrule Warriors collector's edition that comes with a scarf, among other trinkets like a miniature treasure chest. Europe is getting the limited-edition scarf, too. North America? Well, we're technically getting it. There will be a bundle over here, but it'll be sold exclusively at the Nintendo World store in New York. Sales begin at 8:00am on September 26. According to Nintendo, "Quantities are limited [and] due to high demand pre-orders will not be available for this item." There's always eBay. (Ugh.) Nintendo World Store [Twitter]
Castle Doombad is free on the Amazon App Store right now Posted: 09 Sep 2014 06:15 AM PDT Chris took a look at Adult Swim Games' Castle Doombad at the beginning of this year, and had the highest recommendations for it. Despite that, it sort of fell through the cracks for me. Now, there is another reason to check it out: the Android version is currently free on the Amazon App Store. The deal only runs for about another ten hours, so get it while the getting is good. Once the timer is up on this deal, it will increase back up to its normal price of $2.99. [Thanks, JJ!]
Co-published by Devolver, Breach & Clear: Deadline isn't just another zombie game Posted: 09 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT Something about the video I posted on Gun Media and Mighty Rabbit's title Breach & Clear: Deadline didn't sit well with me. I kept thinking about it the day we ran the story. After revisiting it that night, it still didn't hit me as to why Devolver Digital had decided to co-publish this game. I just kept feeling that I was missing something important here. So, the next day I decided to reach out to Mighty Rabbit to see if I could take a look at the game in person. To my surprise, co-founder Josh Fairhurst was nice enough to set up an appointment for me to meet the team on Labor Day. After arriving at Mighty Rabbit's studio, I was given a hands-off walkthrough of the same gameplay segment recently shown at gamescom. In the team's own words, Deadline is a "strategic tactical action RPG in a modern day setting, featuring Special Forces weapons, tactics, and equipment vs. horrific monsters." From what I saw during my time with it, I'd say it could be described as having a combination of elements from Rainbow Six, Left 4 Dead, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and a pinch of Diablo's loot grinding for good measure.
Apple announces the Apple Watch Posted: 09 Sep 2014 05:56 AM PDT This has nothing to do with gaming, I'm sure. Feel free to remind us of that in the comments.
How not to survive in Alien: Isolation Posted: 09 Sep 2014 05:30 AM PDT From everything I've heard of Alien: Isolation, it's best not to run around when you think the coast is clear much less when the Xenomorph is right there in the same room. See: the trailer above. Creative Assembly plans to put out more of these videos throughout the month, and I have to imagine most will end with the demise of Amanda Ripley. It's just like playing the game, then.
Apple announces the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Posted: 09 Sep 2014 05:11 AM PDT Tim Cook called it the "biggest advancement in iPhone." We called it the worst of their long history of poorly kept secrets. Two sizes: both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus were announced this morning at Apple's press conference in Cupertino, CA. The iPhone 6 is 4.7 inches, while its big brother is 5.5 inches. That's 1224 x 740 and Full HD, respectively. They're both less than 7 mm thick (6.9 mm and 6.71 mm), making them the thinnest iPhones yet. The phones will be offered in Gold, Silver, and Space Gray, starting at $199 with a two year contract for the iPhone 6 (16GB), with the top configuration being $399 for a 128GB model. The iPhone 6 Plus takes the price of each size up $100, starting at $299. They'll start shipping on September 19 in the United States, with preorders beginning on September 12.
Tharsis: Commit cannibalism, save humanity Posted: 09 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT Destructoid recently caught up with the folks at Gaijin Games Choice Provisions to check out the studio's next Bit.Trip game completely new project, Tharsis. The turn-based strategy game follows a team of astronauts on a mission to Mars. Of course, things quickly go awry for our intrepid heroes, because nothing good ever happens in space. An asteroid strikes the vessel carrying the explorers, which proves to be quite the problem. Fires erupt all over the ship. Objects become unfastened, transforming into deadly projectiles in a gravity-free environment. Other stuff happens too, probably. Oh, and people start dying. This certainly isn't a joyride. They can't just go home, though. The fate of the planet hangs in the balance. It's pretty much Mars or bust. You see, there's some sort of singularity on the red planet, one that might allow someone to send a message back in time, and so the crew presses ahead, hoping to warn people in the past of impending calamity and avert disaster before it's too late.
Shadow of Mordor pushed back on Xbox 360 and PS3 Posted: 09 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT Like a Balrog vanquished to the depths from whence it came, Warner Bros. took a good look at the legacy console adaptions of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and declared "You shall not pass!" At least, not for a few more months. Warner Bros. announced this morning that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Shadow of Mordor will release on November 18 in the Americas and November 21 in the United Kingdom. They were originally slated to hit shelves alongside the Xbox One and PS4 versions on September 30 and October 3 in the US and UK, respectively. For anyone on legacy consoles, those pesky orcs will just have to go unbashed for a little while longer.
| Wonderful 101's wonderful soundtrack is getting a digital release Posted: 09 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT Good news, Wonderful 101 fans -- Platinum Games is releasing the full soundtrack of 127 tunes to a digital provider near you. The collection is split into two volumes at $9.99 each, which translates to five CDs total. Some of the songs were reworked, including one that was originally intended to just loop endlessly without a finale. Starting September 15th you can download the tracks on iTunes. | Super Smash 3DS will work with the New 3DS stick, but not the Circle Pad Pro Posted: 09 Sep 2014 03:30 AM PDT According to a post on Nintendo's website detailing the breakdown of the New 3DS and how it interacts with Super Smash Bros., it appears as if shoulder button and C-Stick support are confirmed. It makes sense, right? Well apparently it also states that the Circle Pad Pro will not work -- so if you want the benefit of new play control, you'll have to shell out for the new system. It's a shame that the Circle Pad only worked on a scant few games, and now it's essentially obsolete. 3DS LL/3DS [Nintendo via Joystiq] |
Get a detailed look at the new October Xbox One update Posted: 09 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT In October, the Xbox One will be getting another major update to improve the standard user experience. The main thing is that the snap update is completely overhauled. Now instead of going back to the home screen to change the snap, you can double-tap to bring up a new UI box to change the snapped app. The achievements system is also getting an update, as is the friends section, as well as Smartglass and app improvements. Get a full look at everything on Major Nelson's blog or watch the video above. Xbox One System Update Preview: Improvements to Snap, TV experiences [Major Nelson]
| That sexy 'glacier white' DualShock 4 is out now Posted: 09 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT Destiny launches today astride this "glacier white" PlayStation 4 bundle -- something that exists purely to taunt those of us with boring old launch systems. Luckily, Sony is also offering a pair of attractive ivory accessories for all to enjoy. This lovely new DualShock 4 and limited edition wireless headset are both available starting today. | Posted: 09 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT [Since a large part of Destiny is found within the raid system upon reaching max level, we'll be publishing a Review in Progress for the game over the course of a few weeks. Here are our initial thoughts about the live version.] Bungie has a lot to prove coming off of Halo. It crafted a dynasty that really put console shooters on the map, and pretty much everyone reading this likely has at least one great memory with the franchise. Here we are nearly seven years after the developer's split with Microsoft, and four years after its last game, Halo Reach. Destiny is quite an ambitious project, melding elements of MMOs alongside of the tried and true shooter-RPG formula -- so much so that it has created lingering doubts among the masses as to whether or not Bungie can pull it off. While I am enjoying myself for the most part on my path to Destiny's elaborate endgame, I have to say the journey so far hasn't been quite as spectacular as I initially hoped. |
Extrasolar Season 2 is being funded through Kickstarter Posted: 09 Sep 2014 12:00 AM PDT I do not envy Lazy 8 Studios with the balancing act it has trying to market Extrasolar. By revealing too little, only a relatively small demographic will ever try out the exoplanet rover simulator. By revealing too much, a tangible part of the experience can be lost. In the preview I wrote back in April, I urged any with even a fleeting interest in the basic premise to sign up and start playing without reading any further. All these months later, I am thinking about Extrasolar's place on my personal top ten games of the year list, and I stand by that initial insistence. Just go play it. It is free, so all you have to lose is some time. From the beginning, Extrasolar was planned to span three seasons. While the first season is free, players can pay a one-time fee to upgrade to their rovers, or a larger fee for a greater upgrade and access to the second and third seasons when they release. Despite this, the team is looking for more funding, so it has turned to Kickstarter. Current Pioneer tier players ought not worry; those who have already paid for future content will still gain access to Season 2 and Season 3 when they become available. Cleverly, the Kickstarter video itself acts as an introduction to the alternate reality game-esque nature of Extrasolar. In the last couple seconds, the image appears distorted and filtered, but it bears a clear message: a link to a mysterious website showing an ASCII Internet handle and a set of strange circles. Very curious indeed.
Check out this gorgeous Gravity Rush figure Posted: 08 Sep 2014 08:00 PM PDT Kat from the excellent PlayStation Vita game Gravity Rush has been lovingly sculpted into this new figure from maker President Japan. She's dressed in her original black costume with cape and is accompanied by Dusty, and while the last Gravity Rush figure we featured may have been painstakingly detailed, the playful nature of this one is attractive as well. The figure will be available in November and can be pre-ordered now from J-list and AmiAmi. Another Gravity Rush figurine [Tiny Cartridge]
Microsoft's TGS lineup includes few Japanese games Posted: 08 Sep 2014 06:00 PM PDT Microsoft has revealed its Tokyo Game Show lineup, and one has to wonder how much it will resonate the crowd next week at the Makuhari Messe convention center. Japan has never embraced the Xbox brand, largely due to a lack of software designed to appeal to the local market, and a slate of titles like this doesn't figure to bring about a sea change.
