| EDF x Onechanbara crossover is just the best Posted: 08 Sep 2014 04:30 PM PDT Never you mind that these outfits are Japanese retailer-specific pre-order bonuses. That's just stupid reality obscuring the fact there will be a Pale Wing costume in Onechanbara Z2: Chaos. Yes, folks will be able to kill zombies as the angel of death from Earth Defense Force. This is brilliant. Onechanbara Z2: Chaos [Rakuten, Amazon Japan via 4Gamer] |
| VERY IMPORTANT: DuckTales theme recreated with real ducks Posted: 08 Sep 2014 01:00 PM PDT "Slow news day, huh?" someone typed into the comments bar, mouse hovering over the submit button. "What does this even have to do with videogames?" another was seconds away from chiming in. Many more followed suit, each and every giving pause to reconsider their contribution to the cutest thing on the Internet that day. One by one they all realized that the video they just watched was too adorable to sully with negativity. Each with a slight grin, they fell right in line by holding down the backspace key. They knew it's important to pick your fights on the Internet, and who can fight when baby ducks are involved? |
| Humble Store celebrates the end of summer with a sale Posted: 08 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT Summer? I think I must've slept through it... oh wait, I was watching the World Cup. Oh well, there's always next year and until then The Humble Store is settling me in for autumn and winter by having daily deals on some great PC games. There's some big-name titles included in the sale, like Telltale's The Wolf Among Us, The Swapper, Among The Sleep, Gone Home, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and Samurai Gunn. There's also an assortment of flash deals, including Psychonauts on sale for just $0.99/£0.64. I managed to restrain myself pretty well during the numerous online store summer sales so I'm not adverse to spending a wee bit of cash on a game or two to tide me over for the next few weeks until the late-year avalanche of games commences again. |
| Get your 'Genshi' Kyogre or Groudon Pokémon accessories from Hori Posted: 08 Sep 2014 11:30 AM PDT Hori is releasing these super cool Kyogre and Groudon Pokémon accessories for your 3DS or 3DS XL. You can get a TPU cover, hard pouch or a 24-card case. You can pre-order yours now and they'll ship December 5. In other news, Pokémon accessories are some of the best kind. | Videogames Are Stupid! Watch Dtoid's PAX panel right here Posted: 08 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT We decided for this year's PAX Prime panel, we would let our very own Max Scoville just do whatever dumb garbage he wanted to come up with. The result was: "Videogames Are Stupid: The Inherit Silliness of the Medium." Enjoy this recording, in which the people running the panel A/V equipment at PAX managed to blow out the audio, and listen to us wing an hour of talking about how absurdly stupid our favorite form of entertainment is. Max and I were joined by: Brian Altano, of IGN and The Comedy Button; Anthony Carboni, of We Have Concerns; Adam Kovic, from Machinima's Inside Gaming, and Jack DeVries, formerly at IGN and now something of an Internet vagrant. |
| The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is everything I hoped it'd be Posted: 08 Sep 2014 10:30 AM PDT One of my favorite parts of PAX Prime this year was an appointment with Nicalis. Not only was the meeting away from the crowded, noisy Washington State Convention Center, it was an opportunity to get sucked into The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. And that's exactly what happened. I can't actually recall how long the hands-on session lasted -- time quickly slipped by, as tended to be the case with the original game -- but it was certainly quite a while. At any rate, it might as well have been mere minutes because that's what it felt like. As such, I'm struggling to describe the experience outside of general thoughts. Well, here goes: Twin-stick controls are the best. Co-op is super fun, even challenging. The new room layouts, bosses, items, and everything else crammed into what was an already substantial game make Rebirth feel like The Binding of Isaac 1.5. Too familiar to be a full-blown sequel, sure, but better in nearly every way. Looks and plays great on PS4 and PS Vita. It truly feels at home on a handheld. Fans, you're right to be impatient for the November launch. I know I am. As for everyone else, you don't know what you're in for, but Rebirth will be the perfect opportunity to find out. |
| GOG.com celebrates its sixth birthday with a sale Posted: 08 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT GOG.com, the online purveyor of classic and indie PC games is celebrating its sixth birthday and in typical fashion, that means a sale. The site always tries to put a neat twist on its promotions, so for the rest of the week there will be a new set of games on offer from each year the distributor has been running. Back in 2008, GOG (or Good Old Games, as it was known then) launched with a mix of shooters, like Far Cry and Unreal Tournament 2004, adventure games like the Broken Sword and Simon The Sorcerer series along with strategy titles like Stronghold Crusader and Settlers 2. Maybe the standout for me is Beyond Good & Evil for just $2.99. Each day will bring new deals, and I'm always on the hunt for a couple of classic games to round out my collection. |
| Google to pay back $19 million for in-app purchase settlement Posted: 08 Sep 2014 09:45 AM PDT In the latest in-app purchase settlement, the Federal Trade Commission is tasking Google with paying back $19 million to those whose children, against their parents' wishes, spent money on in-app purchases in apps downloaded from the Google Play store. The suit leveled against Google was filed for violation of the FTC Act's prohibition of practices that charge customers for purchases made by childen. The $19 million will reimburse customers for in-app purchases all the way back to 2011. Google's violation of FTC policy stems from the fact that there was no requirement fora password or authorization for in-app purchases back in 2011. Although Google did add a notification asking for the account holder's password in mid-2012, it still did not include the monetary value of the purchase, or that a 30-minute window when the user would not have to enter their password for purchases was taking effect. This suit comes on the tail of a $32.5 million dollar settlement by Apple in January for the same in-app purchasing violations. In addition, the FTC filed suit against Amazon for the same thing in July. In short, you may be expecting some money in the near future if your children went off gallivanting to the Google Play store and spent your hard-earned cash. | This guy's better than you at Dark Souls, because he plays with a Rock Band guitar Posted: 08 Sep 2014 09:30 AM PDT Fancy yourself quite the Dark Souls player? Bet you can cruise right through that game, patiently parrying and rolling your way to victory after victory. Good for you. Now, do it with a Rock Band controller. It may seem unnecessarily frustrating, but someone on Twitch did just that. Streamer Bearzly re-mapped a Rock Band guitar to be mostly functional, and is making a series of videos of him besting different parts of the game. This guy either has an insatiable need for near-impossible challenge or hates seeing these plastic peripherals sitting around his living room collecting dust. Honestly, it's probably a little of both. |
| Posted: 08 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT I undertook a Review in Progress of WildStar at release, and due to a number of distractions and surprise announcements, it's taken me a while to see almost everything there is. But here I am with my Dominion Mechari Warrior, having experienced the leveling process, the community, and a number of endgame activities. I'm pleased to say that although WildStar didn't blow me away, it's a fine MMO if you're looking for another realm to call home. |
| SoundSelf with Oculus Rift is the ultimate trip Posted: 08 Sep 2014 08:30 AM PDT It's no secret that gaming conventions are fertile ground for developers to try out their new creations. Back in April, Jonathan Holmes got the chance to check out SoundSelf with Robin Arnott, the creator of the unorthodox horror title Deep Sea, and saw first hand the impression it had on players. Utilizing virtual reality, players are taken for a ride through their own personal odyssey of light and sound. During the hustle and bustle of PAX Prime, I got the chance to go on a special trip of my own, and it was clear that SoundSelf made quite a name for itself on the show floor. I also got some time to speak with Robin Arnott about his creation and the desire to create an existential experience that brings players to a state of zen and wonder. |
| Nintendo is streaming games for eight hours on Friday Posted: 08 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT I was quite fond of Nintendo's Treehouse streams during E3 this year and it's so nice to see the company continue down that path. You all seem to like them too. The next major stream from Nintendo of America's product development division is set for Friday, September 12. This is something you'll probably want to have playing in the background throughout the day, as it's an eight-hour live stream. Nintendo says to expect gameplay from upcoming Wii U and 3DS titles as well as a look at the "final" version of Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. This is going down on Twitch. I'll be sad if that new Yoshi game is neglected. Nintendo of America [Twitter] |
| FBI joins forces with IGDA in a bid to curb online bullying Posted: 08 Sep 2014 07:45 AM PDT The International Game Developers Association is reported to be working alongside the FBI and other online harassment experts in a bid to stamp out harassment. As a result, it seems, of recent events within the industry, the groups are teaming up to outline and detail ways that developers can target harassment and, hopefully, keep it from happening in the first place. IGDA executive director Kate Edwards stated when speaking to Polygon that the FBI reached out to her at San Diego Comic-Con in July to discuss the capability of the FBI to respond to electronic forms of harassment. Game developers and their associates have been subject to an increasing amount of bullying, "doxxing," death threats, and have been plagued by misinformation being spread about themselves and their products. In a statement posted on their official site, IGDA espoused their support for "diverse viewpoints and healthy debate" in and on the game industry. The statement went on to point out that personal attacks are not only morally and ethically unsound, but are crossing the line into what is considered to be illegal actions in many countries. The IGDA urges the gaming communiy as a whole to take a stand against this behavior. The FBI and IGDA will continue to keep in contact as the IGDA constructs the online resource to help harassed developers. | Assassin's Creed bundle goes America all over everybody's ass Posted: 08 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT As if Ubisoft weren't unleashing enough Assassin's Creed on the world this fall with Unity and Rogue slated for November, it has one more trick up its sleeve to rope in some players with less familiarity of the franchise. In October, Assassin's Creed The Americas Collection will release on legacy consoles, containing Assassin's Creed III, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and this year's port of Assassin's Creed Liberation HD. This bundle, which chronicles the entirety of the franchise's foray into New World/American settings, undoubtedly serves as a way to introduce players to Assassin's Creed Rogue, which is said to take place between Assassin's Creed III and IV, and also is only available on legacy consoles. This package will release on October 3 in Europe and October 28 in North America. Ubisoft has not yet said what this bundle will be priced at. |
| Humanity, splendor, and wonder creep out of commercial systems Posted: 08 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT Late Saturday night and Sunday morning, I did a 101-block long, 7-8 mile walk horizontally through San Francisco, like a scalping of the city's northern districts. It started downtown on the bay at AT&T Park, where the Giants went to play baseball after abandoning Candlestick. Candlestick was walking distance from where I grew up. My mom worked there for a while. Only baseball games. She often brought home practiced and played balls stained with grass and infield dirt. Years ago, driving home from Candlestick, from a 49ers dismantling of Seattle, I was flipped over on the freeway by a drunk driver, trying to figure out if the blood on my jeans was mine (it wasn't). I haven't been back there since. Football tickets got too expensive. The San Francisco 49ers abandoned Candlestick this year, too. The San Francisco 49ers now play in arid Santa Clara, in a stadium named after a brand of jeans, though ownership kept the "San Francisco" in its name. It's branding. The team is now in Silicon Valley and closer to a higher economic class (not out in "scary" -- minority-packed -- Visitacion Valley/Hunter's Point). My landlord hasn't missed a 49ers game in over 40 years, but he almost lost his season tickets in the move because of how much the organization has jacked up the prices. My rent wasn't enough to keep him on the 50 yard line, in the middle of the action. Now he's in an endzone corner. The stadium is sold out, of course, with the $110-$479 single seats now being resold for around $600 a ticket. Dropping over $100 in the second hand market gets you standing room only in the nosebleeds. |
| Destiny is one of the best Vita Remote Play games to date Posted: 08 Sep 2014 06:45 AM PDT Destiny is out tomorrow, but the servers are live today for people who got their copy early or are reviewing the game. I've had a chance to play quite a bit already (more on that tomorrow), but I wanted to touch on one thing in particular today -- Remote Play. Often times Remote Play is a second thought, and requires you to make some sacrifices in control quality, but Bungie did a great job adapting Destiny for the Vita. Everything is relatively the same except for of course the absence of two buttons (L1 and R1) on the Vita and the ability to click the analog sticks (L3 and R3). The former is solved with very intuitive tap system -- a tap on the left side chucks a grenade, and a tap on the right allows for a melee attack. The sprint button is the down d-pad direction, right next to the left analog movement stick. Tapping the right side of the screen constantly feels natural, and although the left side can be a bit jarring at first, grenades are on a respawn timer and aren't used as often. Tapping both sides of the screen uses your L1+R1 super move, which again, is only used sparingly. I really wish the Vita just had four shoulder buttons and dynamic analog sticks, but this is the next best thing. I've played on the Vita for a few hours, and found it to be pretty comfortable for all occasions. Strikes can be a bit much because of the smaller screen real estate, so I switched over to the TV for those, but everything else from story missions to exploration hubs are completely playable. With some practice, I suspect Strikes and Raids will be too. Check back tomorrow for some thoughts on the retail build of Destiny. I can say that I'm not blown away so far, but I'm enjoying myself as I approach level 10. |
| Dead Rising 2, Resident Evil 5 migrating to Steamworks Posted: 08 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT When Capcom transitioned Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition from Games for Windows Live to Steamworks, it spurred questions about the company's remaining PC titles. It turns out those -- Resident Evil 5, Dead Rising 2, and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record, specifically -- are next in line, but it's going to take a while. How does early 2015 sound? Not ideal? Well, yeah. Then again, nothing about this Games for Windows Live situation has been ideal. Suppose we should be thankful Capcom is even bothering to update its back catalog like this. Now that these specific games are accounted for, cue the questions about Lost Planet. Resident Evil 5, Dead Rising 2 and Off The Record coming to Steamworks [Capcom] |
| There are some good Club Nintendo game rewards this month Posted: 08 Sep 2014 06:15 AM PDT Now, when I say this is a decent month for Club Nintendo game offers, I'm asking you to focus on Kirby Super Star, Super Punch-Out!!, and Art Style: PiCTOBiTS. Two Super Nintendo classics and an awesome, underplayed puzzler. Go ahead and ignore the rest, if you would.
No, really. Start up your 3DS and get to downloading. |
| Battlefield Hardline will have 150 ranks, and another beta round Posted: 08 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT Taking to Twitter, executive producer Steve Papoutsis shared some recent developments for Battlefield Hardline. Be prepared to grind -- Hardline will reportedly arrive with 150 ranks in tow, allowing multiplayer combatants to level-up quite a bit before they presumably prestige and start all over. Additionally, another beta will be coming to "all platforms" before launch, so everyone will get a chance to give it a go. Rush mode is also out, but Conquest and Team Death Match will return, as will "five new modes." Steve Papoutsis [Twitter] |
| At long last, I'll be able to get a shiny Gengar Posted: 08 Sep 2014 05:45 AM PDT Gengar only became my favorite Pokémon in the last few years, but now that it's my bestie, I don't see that ever changing. (Sorry, Feraligatr.) Matter of fact, I'd even be willing to step foot in a GameStop for a distribution event related to the ghostly Pokémon -- true love. There are two events planned for Pokémon X/Y in the United States this year and both require leaving the house. The first one is for a shiny Gengar with its Gengarite Mega Stone, obtainable via a "special code card" at GameStop from October 13 - October 26. The next event is for Diance -- claim yours from October 27 - November 16 at the game retailer. The Diancite Mega Stone isn't included here; you'll need to earn it in either Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire once those titles launch on November 21. |
| Way of the Samurai 4 announced for PC Posted: 08 Sep 2014 05:30 AM PDT Way of the Samurai 4 is cutting a trail to PC later this year, Ghostlight has announced. The publisher admits porting the open-world action game is a tad outside its wheelhouse, but decided to take a swing at it all the same. Historically, the company has distributed obscure JRPGs for European markets, but perhaps this is a portent of things to come. Set in 19th century Japan, Way of the Samurai 4 forces players to take sides in a three-way conflict between shogunate pro-government forces, isolationist rebels, and meddlesome foreign powers. In Destructoid's 2012 review of the PlayStation version, Josh Tolentino called the title a "rewarding experience," albeit one that may be an acquired taste with some rough edges. |
| Review: Divinity: Original Sin Posted: 08 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT Remember the first "western RPG" that really made an impression on you? Maybe it was Baldur's Gate, maybe it was Planescape: Torment, or maybe it was Dragon Age: Origins. Regardless, you love that game. It might have flaws, it might not appeal to everyone, but you freaking love it. Divinity: Original Sin will be that game for many people. This will be the RPG that sticks with them forever. 20 years down the road they'll turn to their friend and say "Remember Divinity? Man, they just don't make RPGs like that anymore!" The game fits in very well with what we consider to be the classics, and if you do have those fond memories, Original Sin is bound to imprint some more. |
| Batman: Arkham Knight won't launch until June Posted: 08 Sep 2014 04:45 AM PDT While we'll have plenty to keep us busy later this year, particularly next month, a bunch of the games that are most testing my patience aren't releasing until 2015. Batman: Arkham Knight is one of them. Today, Warner Bros. announced a worldwide launch date: June 2, 2015. Considering how high expectations are for Rocksteady's return to the franchise, I'm thankful the studio isn't rushing too much. This one's got to count. As part of the release date news, a pair of special editions were also detailed. The Limited Edition is $99.99 and comes with an 80-page art book, a SteelBook case, the Batman: Arkham Knight #0 comic book, three exclusive skins from The New 52, and a Batman Memorial Statue. There's also a Batmobile Edition, priced at $199.99, which swaps the aforementioned Memorial Statue for, yup, a "fully transformable Batmobile statue" by TriForce. |
| PSA: Check your Wii U Deluxe promotion balance, the program ends this December Posted: 08 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT It's very, very easy to forget that Nintendo has a promotion going on for Wii U Deluxe owners. For everyone who opted for that version of the console, you get 10% back from eShop purchases in the form of $5 gift cards. As a reminder, the promotion started in December 2012, and will end in December 2014. You will have until March 2015 to spend all of your points, so get to it! Deluxe Digital Promotion [Nintendo] |
| Mega Man X fan? Check out some gameplay from fangame 'Corrupted' Posted: 08 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT Mega Man enthusiasts are likely aware of the Mega Man X: Corrupted project. It's been in the works for about seven years now, promises to be a treat for X series fans. Now you can get a look at the Crystal Rafflar stage, which looks authentic to the point where it could have came from the series proper. The full game will play more like a Metroidvania, complete with exploration elements. I hope that we see a final version at some point, as I've been following this one for quite a while. | Xbox Live Rewards program slightly revamped Posted: 08 Sep 2014 03:30 AM PDT The Xbox Live Rewards program is getting a little simpler. From now on, if you spend $150 a year, you'll actually get 1% back. Yeah, that doesn't sound like a lot, but if you earn more ranks you can get up to 5%, and if you're a gold member the amount is doubled -- so 10% back is the max. Also, if you buy any three $60 games on demand, you'll earn $20 back in credit up to November 30th. Like the Nintendo rewards program for Wii U Pro owners, I enjoy checking my email occasionally and finding out I have a few extra bucks to spend. Xbox Live Rewards [Twitter] |
| Retro City Rampage DX will get a 'New 3DS' update Posted: 08 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT Retro City Rampage is a pretty polarizing game around these parts, but I found myself really digging it, especially the well-crafted 3DS port. For everyone who still plays it off and on, you might be happy to know that creator Brian Provinciano will be supporting the game going forward, even when the New 3DS drops. When asked on Twitter, Provinciano stated that the game will get an update to accommodate the 3DS' added buttons -- which may include the two triggers and the extra thumbstick nub...thing. In the past, he claimed that he wasn't happy with how the Circle Pad Pro turned out, and didn't add support to the game -- specifically, "it made it harder to reach the touch screen for weapons, making it awkward to switch between shooting and jumping." Retro City Rampage [Twitter] |
| Yuri Kozukata is your new Fatal Frame: The Black Haired Shrine Maiden lead Posted: 08 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT Fatal Frame: The Black Haired Shrine Maiden has an awful title as well as some decidedly bland box art, but the recent issue of Famitsu has revealed some details about the upcoming Japan-only (boo!) Wii U survival horror title that seem intriguing. I mean, it's a Fatal Frame game, It's gonna be spooky. That girl we've been seeing in all of the promotional art and videos? Her name's Yuri Kozukata, and she's got a special power that allows her to see people who have been "spirited away" as well as bring them back. Employed at Cafe Kurosawa, she embarks on a journey into the Hikayama mountains to recover the missing cafe owner, Hisoka Kurosawa. Hisoka went into the mountains to recover a girl who had, in fact, been spirited away. Little Miyu Hinasaki went to the mountains by her lonesome to find her mother, starting a chain of disappearances that will ultimately culminate in, well, the events of the game, I'd say. There's also a writer named Ren Houjou who ALSO goes into the mountains with his assistant Rui Kagamiya. I think everyone needs to just chill it out and stop going into the mountains. But then, I suppose there wouldn't be a Fatal Frame game, would there? And there probably won't be, at least a localization. Hey, we can be hopeful though, right? | 'Draw' the Senran Kagura girls in this strange crossover Posted: 08 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT Looks like there's another Senran Kagura game on the horizon, but before you get too excited, it's a crossover with Toast's Drawgirls and Senran Kagura: New Wave. Drawgirls is a picture discovery game where it's your job to gradually uncover bits and pieces of a photo as quickly as you can. You'll draw boxes over the outlines of the girls and receive a special card and piece of character art if you really nail it. The mobile title is rife with enemies that can erase your progress and keep you from seeing the goods, so watch out for that. Or, you could probably just look up art from Senran Kagura: New Wave online if you really , desperately needed to see the completed pictures. Drawgirls is on the horizon for iOS and Android, but I bet if you look really hard online, you can probably get some better Senran Kagura bromides and all that jazz. See How That Senran Kagura: New Wave x Drawgirls Crossover Play [Siliconera] |
| 2D survival horror Uncanny Valley has a demo out now Posted: 08 Sep 2014 12:00 AM PDT Way back in April, we first heard about Uncanny Valley, and we all had a nice juvenile moment of pointing and snickering at pixelated medical diagrams of human genitalia. The trailer also showed slightly less funny stuff: darkness, meat hooks, and creepy demon things that look a little bit like the kid from Limbo. Developer Cowardly Creations ran an unsuccessful crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, but still managed to get Uncanny Valley approved on Steam Greenlight. Despite not being able to secure public funding, the studio has still made progress to the point where a playable demo is now available to download. I probably will not be playing it, because hanging meat creeps me out. Am I talking about the animal carcasses dangling from the ceiling, or the penis cross section poster? Answer: Yes. |
