ESPN: eSports are not actually sports

Posted: 07 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Are eSports real sports? ESPN's intrepid leader doesn't seem to think so.

“It’s not a sport — it’s a competition," ESPN president John Skipper said Thursday at the Code/Media Series conference in New York. “Chess is a competition. Checkers is a competition. Mostly, I’m interested in doing real sports.”

The dismissal is curious, given ESPN partnered with Valve earlier this summer to broadcast The International, the world championship for Dota 2, and how the network airs stuff like cup stacking, competitive eating, spelling bees, and poker tournaments. Somehow those must be real sports.

I wonder where the man stands on the great Gone Home debate. Videogame or no, Mr. Skipper?

PopCap's last remaining co-founder leaves EA

Posted: 07 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

PopCap boss John Vechey is parting ways with the studio he helped build nearly 15 years ago.

In Vechey's farewell address, he reveals plans to "give something back for awhile until [he figures] out what's next." That involves working with environmental news organization Grist, while PopCap soldiers on with new projects, including an "all-new Peggle."

The departure marks the end of the era for PopCap, leaving the developer without any its three founders. Brian Fiete moved on in 2010, with Jason Kapalka following suit earlier this year. EA Mobile executive vice president Frank Gibeau insists the company remains in "deeply capable hands."

Study: Buying at retail more eco-friendly than online

Posted: 07 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT

A new study finds buying a game at retail may have a less significant impact on the environment than downloading the same title.

The Journal of Industrial Ecology recently published a report dubbed "The Carbon Footprint of Games Distribution," which accessed the ecological impact of purchasing a 8.8 GB game from a local shop as opposed to picking it up from the PlayStation Store.

The findings indicate getting in your car and driving down to your neighborhood retailer is greener on average than acquiring a game digitally, unless the file size is 1.3 GB or less. Of course, digital titles will never end up in a landfill somewhere. So that's something else to consider.

The study adds consumer behavior can have a significant impact, and practices like using public transport or purchasing games while shopping for other items would fare even better compared to leaving a system running idle for long periods of time. It also notes gameplay accounts for the bulk of gaming-related carbon emissions, and environmentally conscious individuals would be advised to consider options like utilizing autopower down settings.

Mistwalker's new RPG is unlike anything we've seen before

Posted: 07 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Hironobu Sakaguchi is best known as the creator of Final Fantasy; a man responsible for some of the most influential and well-respected role-playing games of our time.

His sprawling worlds and epic adventures have touched millions of people, many of whom may be surprised to discover how significant a departure Sakaugchi's latest endeavor is compared with the titles we typically associate with his name.

Destructoid recently met with the living legend in Seattle to see that new project, Terra Battle, and believe us when we say you haven't seen anything quite like this before.

Loren Bednar may be the most positive guy in gaming today

Posted: 07 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT

[Sup Holmes is a weekly talk show for people that make great videogames. It airs live every Sunday at 4pm EST on Youtube, and can be found in Podcast form on Libsyn and iTunes.]

Two weeks ago on Sup Holmes, we welcomed Loren Bednar (RocketsRocketsRockets) to the program. This was right before Loren's latest game won a best of show of PAX award from Dtoid, so don't go around thinking I was trying to exploit his new found glory. Loren may not be that well known of a developer now, but the same was true of Rami IsmailZoe Quinn, Phil TibitowskiChristine LoveSean Velasco, and Sophie Houlden when they were first on the show. Ah, they grow up so fast.

Loren is he is one of the most constructive, supportive people in the game industry that I've ever met. That's the main reason I wanted to talk to him. He makes sprite sheets for aspiring developers to use for free, just because he likes to help. He makes beautiful fan art based on his favorite games, just to show gratitude and encouragement. He looks at the world of gaming and asks "What can I offer you?" as opposed to the "What can you offer me?" attitude that we see far too much of these days. For that reason alone, he's a role model. His games are pretty darn fun too.

Thanks again to Loren for appearing on the show. Tune in here at 4pm EST if you want to get to know Matt Gilgenbach, creator of Neverending Nightmares, the Edward Gorey-influenced horror based on autobiographical experiences with mental health symptoms. I'm sure we're going to have a lot to talk about.

Square Enix wants to bring Dragon Quest X west

Posted: 07 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT

Square Enix producers Yuu Miyake and Noriyoshi Fujimoto told Siliconera they would "love to" publish Dragon Quest X overseas. That doesn't mean it's terribly likely, though.

“In terms of this being an MMO, again, we have to consider the operation and logistics of how to make that feasible,” Miyake added. “We also have to think about it from a business standpoint.

"We’d have to build a new data center for pretty much every location, and we need to make sure that makes sense as a business," he continued. "We want to be able to operate in the different regions. Again, we would love to do it, but we’re still trying to work out the details and figure out what would work best [were we to bring it abroad].”

Don't hold your breath!
