| Next-Level Games was working on a Metroid title Posted: 06 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon was one of the games that helped turn the 3DS around back when it was struggling to inspire sales. Its a fantastic game, one of the best on the console. Sadly, it may also may be part of why we haven't gotten a new Metroid game on the handheld yet. A former artist for Next-Level games posted this art in his portfolio. It was reportedly part of a pitch Next-Level games put to Nintendo requesting to make a new Metroid game. Destructoid has reached out to a trusted source related to the project who told us "Yes that is real. That’s the first I’d actually seen of that concept art, but a prototype was made before being shelved in favor of Luigi’s Mansion 2. It was about as bare-bones as it gets, but it was still pretty fun." It's been a long time since we saw a new Metroid game, and even longer since the series lived up to its acclaimed legacy. While the art direction seen here would have been a little jarring to many fans, I have no doubt that Next-Level could have produced something excellent with the franchise. Its a shame that this project never came together, but we can bet that it wont be too long now until Nintendo reveals one (or two) new Metroid games to the world. | Not-review: Brady Games Ultimate Street Fighter 4 Official Bible Posted: 06 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT Fighting games are about more than competition. At their best, they are about taking the most simple of design concepts (be better at hitting someone than they are at hitting you) and using game theory magic to somehow evoke years of replayability and depth. For years, fighting game strategy guides didn't even come close to doing justice to the games they covered. No matter how insightful and knowledgeable the writers of those guides were, the limits of print excluded them from doing too much more than giving out some basic strategy, combos, and overview of how the game's system works. The internet changed all that. There are now countless places to learn just how deep most fighting games can go. If print strategy guides are to serve any purpose at all in the future we're living in, it's going to have to deliver something special. It's going to have to curate information with an expert eye, delivering only the information that you need, relieving you of the burden of wading through reams of irrelevant information online. It's going to have to be equally accessible to both veterans and beginners. It's going to have to give you insights that you just can't find anywhere else. With few exceptions, Brady Games' Ultra Street Fighter IV Official Bible does all that and more. |
We had entirely too much fun with the Madden GIFerator Posted: 06 Sep 2014 08:30 AM PDT EA Sports had this crazy idea that sounded as though, in a perfect world, it just might work. They empowered football fans to create their own GIFs complete with player animations, backgrounds, and smack talk with an impossible easy-to-use generator that even a monkey can figure out -- we know, because we did. They called it the Madden GIFerator, and it was good. Originally "designed to help fans celebrate their favorite team's biggest plays and challenge their rivals," the GIFerator has spawned hundreds of GIFs that go far beyond simple jabs at other teams between sports fans. The Destructoid team took to the GIFerator to see what irreverent silliness we could come up with, and the results are, well, just about what you'd expect. Here's the cream of the crop from those who participated. You know what that means, don't you? You have to create your own and share it below. We'll be waiting.
The best stuff on Destructoid this week [9/6] Posted: 06 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT What are you going to cook this weekend? I've been on point. Parmigiana di pollo, arroz y salsa verde para tacos, carne asada tacos, guacamole, pesto, roasted chicken and bell pepper, burgers. Going to do up some more fresh pesto this weekend because I don't want the pine nuts to go south ($20 for a bag!) You should cook something, too. Lot of post-PAX previews and general clean up this week, along with a follow up piece of ace investigative reporting. Here's last week's post. Let's begin anew. [We post a lot of articles here at Destructoid. The endless, ouroboros news cycle has us burning the snake at both ends, which will ultimately push big news, thoughtful original pieces, and all sorts of other great content off of the front page. Check here every Saturday for my attempt to rectify that.]
Claire returns in Resident Evil: Revelations 2 along with a new face Posted: 06 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT [Edit: Push Start was the original source on this news. Their post has an even better look at the game via GamesMaster Magazine, inducing a shot of the The Afflected in action. They are bloated. gross, and as we guessed, appear to be wearing wristbands. Would be fun if the whole thing ended up being a tribute to Rave to the Grave...] A lot of Nintendo fans are still reeling from the fact that Resident Evil: Revelations 2 isn't coming to Wii U or 3DS, despite the spin-offs origins on said handheld. My guess is that they should probably wait to see if the game is any good before they voice disappointment. From what we know now, it could still go either way. A bunch of new info on the game was just let out over on Rely on Horror. 2 player co-op campaign has been confirmed, featuring the return of Resident Evil: Code Veronica's Claire Redfield and the debut of Ellie look-alike Moira Burton, daughter of Resident Evil icon Barry Burton. Like Code Veronica, the game takes place on a prison island, featuring a new "zombie-like" enemy called The Afflicted. If that teaser trailer is any indication, we can guess The Afflicted are regular, harmless people while their wristbands are green, and zombie-like jerks when their wristbands are red. Sounds a lot like an idea I had for Resident Evil way back when, before Resident Evil 6 permanently damaged my optimism for the franchise. Rely on Horror has more on the game here.
Here's our Dragon Con 2014 cosplay gallery Posted: 06 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT I doubt I'll ever attend Dragon Con, what with my inability to be in two places at once and PAX falling on the same weekend, but the cosplay photos and videos are always a treat. We were on the scene for another photo round-up. My favorites are Elsa with a lightsaber, the Bob's Burgers family, Dale & Tucker vs. Evil, blue Link, disco-ball Samus, and of course Groot.
Xbox pokes fun at Activision with fake Destiny ad Posted: 06 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT Microsoft loves promoting Bungie games, you know. Unfortunately, that ship has sort of sailed. Activision and the erstwhile Halo studio are now cozying up with Sony, and the folks at Xbox UK seem to be handling the situation with all the maturity and grace of a jealous ex-boyfriend. Albeit a pretty clever one that knows just how to make us giggle. Oh hey there. Look at that. Destiny, the new fragrance by Xbox. Haha. That's a pretty cute, subtle poke in the ribs. Well, at least until you head over to DestinyFragrance.com and see the flaming bag of dog excrement Microsoft left on Activision's corporate doorstep. "Okay, so here's the lowdown. Destiny is actually an epic new first-person shooter, available on Xbox," once read a statement on the site. "Thing is, we didn't have permission to run adverts for the game. So we didn't. Thanks for smelling that something was up. Now get the game and become a legend." "Too far, Xbox UK. Too far," an important person probably thought, as the site now says "Hi. There are some great Xbox One offers available at the moment. Please check with retailers for more information." We're willing to bet that someone got a stern talking to over these antics. Destiny launches next Tuesday on PlayStation 4 and some other machines too maybe. Destiny Fragrance [Microsoft, Xbox UK via Eurogamer]
