PSA: Hyrule Warriors is roughly a 7GB download

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 02:12 PM PDT

Hyrule Warriors is just around the corner, and I know a lot of you Wii U owners like to plan out how much space you'll need if you're going the download route. Today I can confirm that the game clocks in at 7.08GB. It's not quite as gargantuan as say, Tropical Freeze (11GB), but it's sizable enough where you might want to clear out something if you don't already have an external hard-drive.

Warriors is set to launch on September 26th, but our review will drop roughly a week before launch.

Last-gen Destiny players can upgrade to current-gen for free this year

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT

If you're planning to buy Destiny on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 and think you might migrate to Xbox One or PlayStation 4 eventually, consider going for a digital copy (I know) -- you'll be able to upgrade to the current-generation equivalent for free for a limited time. That goes for the standard game, Digital Guardian Edition, and Expansion Pass.

Bungie has the full details for the promotion over here. Essentially, you just need to log in on PS4 or Xbox One using the same PlayStation Network ID or Xbox Live account that was used to purchase Destiny "on or before" January 15, 2015, and you'll be able to redeem the content for free on your current-gen system.

These digital upgrades are only possible within the same console family (i.e., PS3 to PS4) but your "Guardians, progress, stats, and gear" will carry over, and you'll still be able to play Destiny on your last-gen console after "upgrading." It won't magically vanish or anything.

Pretty good promo here and something I wish more companies would embrace, but it's unfortunate we're only now being told about it mere days before release. Hope you didn't pre-order!

PAX Prime 2014: Robots and cosplayers and Dtoiders

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT

There it is, ladies and gentlemen: your PAX Prime 2014 Dtoid group photo! It wasn't as big of a showing this year -- thanks a lot, PAX-tickets-that-sell-out-in-42-seconds -- but it sure was a pretty one. I know I say this every year, but damn; Dtoiders are sexy.

In the gallery below you'll find various pics of cosplayers, Dtoid meetups, and Mr Destructoid on the show floor. Thanks to everyone who made this PAX so wonderful, and to all the awesome Dtoiders I hugged: I hope to see you again next year!

If you loved the 90's more, you'd have made Seinfeld's apartment in The Sims 4

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 10:30 AM PDT

Anyone that can play bass guitar inevitably always gets asked the question "Can you play the Seinfeld theme?" (Duh, obviously.) That's probably why they bought a bass in the first place -- to lay down the groove to the iconic theme to one of the best sitcoms ever.

Maybe Sims players will get the same treatment if the person they're talking to remembers that one time that someone recreated Jerry's apartment in The Sims 4. Yeah, probably not, but it doesn't make this effort any less impressive. That's where Sims players can go to complain about the wacky dating scenarios they've gotten themselves into.

That expensive, gold Monster Hunter statue? Doesn't have a lil dick!

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Last month, we brought you an investigative, penetrative look at this $29,000 gold Monster Hunter statue. Particularly, "does it...does it have a lil dick?" we asked.

It wasn't immediately clear. All the photos provided by Capcom were from the same angle, so it was impossible to attribute it definitively to forced perspective. Comparisons to other, non-gold Otomo Airou were not one-to-one, design-wise, so that plan didn't work. Similarly, the images were not a high enough resolution to zoom in and check for penile spines, a defining characteristic of cat cock.

We don't like stories slipping through the cracks with inconclusive verdicks here at Destructoid. Thankfully, I've finally found some alternative shots of the statue at Japanese site BikeBros

As you can see, the cat pretty clearly does not have a lil dick.

Madden 15 is an extra scummy ripoff on PS3 and 360

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 09:01 AM PDT

EA usually saves its most blatant hack jobs for consoles where it's less likely to draw ire.

FIFA 14 on Vita was a reskin of FIFA 13 on Vita which was a reskin of FIFA Soccer. Before you snark about "aren't all sports games?" no, they are not. They have perceptible changes beyond roster updates. In this instance, that was not the case.

Same when EA re-released FIFA 12 as FIFA 13 on the Wii.

Or when FIFA 13 on 3DS was re-released as FIFA 14 on 3DS. The $40 videogame contained "no updates to gameplay or game modes," only "updated kits and rosters." So that's when you can snark about it being a roster update.

Except that snarking isn't sufficient, because this is just bullshit. Stop re-releasing the games.

Fortified is a fun 1950s sci-fi take on base defense

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 08:30 AM PDT

Leading up to PAX Prime, Clapfoot released a trailer for its base defense shooter Fortified. It caught my eye for a few reasons, notably the '50s sci-fi movie theme and its general resemblance to Double Fine's Iron Brigade (formerly Trenched). There aren't too many games like it.

The build playable at PAX was fairly early in development but offered a decent enough idea of what to expect. Aliens are invading the city and you and up to three friends need to shoot them down, one wave at a time. I selected the character class with a jetpack, while my co-op partner had the unique ability to command soldiers around the battlefield. I think I made the right call.

We had the freedom to place defensive structures like machine gun turrets, a slowing device, and sandbags wherever we wanted within reason, and the shooting felt good -- surprisingly good. My favorite weapon was the rocket launcher, because it sent robot invaders flying all over the place. The physics were wobbly, exactly as you would hope. Again, think lo-fi science fiction.

With some proper maze-building techniques, we managed to funnel robotic spiders into a single lane so we could concentrate fire on flying saucers and other stragglers. The boss, a hulking robot, must have been inches away from our base before he went down.

I wasn't able to see the two remaining characters, upgrades, or any other levels -- I'm told they will more than likely all be set within a city -- but I liked what was playable enough to keep Fortified on my radar. The game isn't releasing on PC and Xbox One until next year, so there's time for more features and polish. In speaking with art director Adam Garib, it seems like the studio has a solid grasp on what's needed to flesh out the experience. Fingers crossed.

Friday Night Fights: Pumpkin Spice Latte

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Happy Friday!

Now that we're about to enter the fall season, my Facebook is starting to fill up with the annual "Pumpkin Spice Latte" coffee drinks posts.  Now look, I love the fall, it was one of the major reasons why we moved back to Illinois from Florida. The changing colors on the trees, the cool crisp air, and the smell of fireplaces burning in the distance.

However, the one thing that I absolutely cannot stand, is how everything nowadays, during the fall season, seems to revolve around pumpkin this and pumpkin that. We get it, you like your damn pumpkin flavored drinks, scones, biscuits and pancakes. I just don't need to hear about it year after year.

Shadow of the Colossus movie lives on with a new director

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT

Mama director Andrés Muschietti has been tapped for Shadow of the Colossus now that previous director Josh Trank (Chronicle) is busy with Fantastic Four and Star Wars, reports Deadline.

We've had years to warm up to the idea of a film adaptation but I'm still struggling to see how Shadow of the Colossus, arguably the best videogame of the 2000s, will work outside of its original medium. Every bit of news surrounding the project is just a reminder that "Right, this exists."

Oh well. I'll just continue hoping for the best -- a movie that, if all else fails, is visually breathtaking.

CONFIRMED: Shiva will snap her fingers for Diamond Dust in FFXIV

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 07:15 AM PDT

Rejoice, Final Fantasy fans. Some time ago we got confirmation that Shiva would be coming to Final Fantasy XIV in the form of boss fight, but one lingering question remained -- will she snap her fingers for her Diamond Dust spell?

According to a recent developer's update -- yes, she will. The update also provides us with a few extra details on the creation process from a number of staff members (including some musings on how they hit "rock bottom" during the 1.0 era of FFXIV), so be sure to give it a read. I'm just glad that we can expect one of the most badass summons/Esper/Aeon ever in patch 2.4, which is set to arrive roughly in the next month or so.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker shows off the pros and cons of the GamePad

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Anyone who has played Super Mario 3D World knows what to expect from Nintendo's upcoming Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. That's because Captain Toad made an appearance periodically in his own levels throughout 3D World to lend a slower, more methodical style to the cat-suited platforming that mostly defined the game.

Nintendo realized that it may have a hit on its hands with the Captain, and thus Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker was born -- a game comprised solely of those bits where the protagonist hunts his way through puzzling levels for coins and gems. It's a simple concept, and one that our own Darren Nakamura covered in depth in an E3 preview.

Destiny and Red Bull are teaming up for some unclear reason

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT

"Brand synergy!" the executive shouted, confident that his enthusiasm would rally his employees. "Forward-thinking leverage!" he followed up, unsure about the mumbo jumbo coming out of his mouth, but hoping his tone would inspire. He was a good Red Bull executive; he knew attitude trumped business know-how.

And that's how (I imagine) Bungie and Red Bull came to partner up for the September 8 Destiny launch event. The Red Bull Air Force team and a member of Bungie are skydiving into the Bellevue, Washington party, and Red Bull's making a YouTube series about it all.

Other than that, Red Bull will have a presence at some Wal-Mart launch parties, and Destiny will be featured in some college campus promotions. There isn't any talk about what the long-term plans for this relationship will be, but it'll likely include worldwide Xtreme kidney failure.

Dawn of War II is no longer tied to Games for Windows Live

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Relic has migrated the excellent Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II and its Chaos Rising expansion away from Games for Windows Live, just as the studio said it would.

Unfortunately, not everything made it over to Steamworks, including: LAN support, pausing in multiplayer, and referee functions. Long-time players will also have to start from scratch -- previous save files and experience / player levels under Games for Windows Live are not compatible.

Frustrating, but we'll get over it. Perhaps I'll take this as an excuse to get back into The Last Stand mode which, for a time, I was infatuated with. So much fun with a solid group.

The UK Super Mario Bros. movie Blu-Ray release has a new documentary

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 05:30 AM PDT

On November 3rd, UK fans will get a chance to pick up the Super Mario Bros. movie on Blu-Ray, with a number of bonus features in tow. The biggest one is definitely a full 60 minute documentary on the film, titled "This Ain't No Video Game."

It'll apparently feature new interviews with the film's co-directors, producers, actors John Leguizamo and Richard Edson, and a number of other designers and visual effects artists. The late Bob Hoskins will also be featured with some archive interviews.

While the movie may not be on the top of everyone's videogame adaptation list, this sounds like something worth watching.

Review: Halfway

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT

One of the things that is so appealing about science fiction is that it deals with situations that seem fantastical, but are ultimately plausible. Technology today would look like magic to those from years past, and so the technology of the future might seem incredible to us now.

Good science fiction brings up not only these possibilities, but the questions that would show up alongside the possibilities. The nature of these questions can be ethical, social, psychological, philosophical, or just technical. Halfway asks: What happens if you spend too much time in the "in-between" when making a faster-than-light jump?

Halfway answers: "Aliens show up and you shoot them a lot."

Run SackBoy! Run! is coming to the Vita, Android, and iOS platforms

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT

Just like how Sony brought over Fat Princess: Piece of Cake to mobile platforms in addition to the Vita, so to is the upcoming Run Sackboy! Run coming to iOS and Android. It's a runner, and of course, it's free-to-play -- you can also earn costumes for LittleBigPlanet 3.

All things considered this looks like it has enough charm to transcend the genre. We'll see soon enough in October.

Gust RPG Ar Nosurge: Ode to an Unborn Star is coming our way later this month. We've got fresh screenshots from Koei Tecmo on this upcoming PS3 release, showing its music-based battle system and the relationship-based character systems.

Below, you'll find a massive gallery of pictures to enjoy, ranging from badass battle shots to singing/dancing to sparkly hearts and flower petals and such. I'm not going to pretend to fully understand what's going on in these screenshots, but I can say that this definitely looks like a game I'd like to play.

You can pre-order the Rockman Sound Box on Amazon Japan

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT

There have been a lot of Mega Man soundtrack sets over the years, but most of them will break the bank. If you want to opt for something a little cheaper, the Rockman Sound Box is available for pre-order on Amazon.jp. It's a 10-disc set that's basically a pared down package of the Sound E-Can collection.

The set comes in at ¥10,800, which is roughly $100 US. If you haven't used Amazon Japan before, there's a "view in English" link above the pre-order button -- you'll also have to create another account.

Harmonix to create a virtual reality experience for Samsung Gear VR

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 03:45 AM PDT

Remember that new Samsung Gear VR that we told you about a few days ago? Harmonix sends word that they've signed on to create a new virtual reality experience for the device.

Harmonix Music VR is a music-listening dream-like experience that uses the company's Music Analysis Engine to generate VR world elements. It's a visualizer that you can stick your face into. Neato.

“Harmonix has always been interested in creating fundamentally new ways for people to interact with music,” says studio CEO Steve Janiak. “There’s an incredible amount of potential for this with virtual reality, and Harmonix Music VR is just one way we can deliver on these types of innovative experiences. We can’t wait to hear what people think about this new way to experience the music they love.”

Expect Harmonix Music VR to launch alongside the Gear VR this year.

Binding of Isaac: Rebirth will arrive in November

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 03:30 AM PDT

[Update: the trailer is now live, and you can pre-order the game here later today on PC. Warning, the trailer is likely NSFW.]

In the form of a new trailer, Nicalis has revealed the release date for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth -- November 4th. The video has since been taken down, but not early fast enough for a bunch of viewers to get wind of the date.

Expect Rebirth to hit the PC, Vita, and PS4 platforms in a few months. A 3DS version was initially shot down by Nintendo, but creator Edmund McMillen states that it could eventually see life on the platform.

Mortal Kombat X will arrive in April with a Goro pre-order bonus

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT

If you're excited for Mortal Kombat X, rest easy that we now have a release date -- April 14, 2015. That's still a ways off, but if there aren't any real delays it isn't too bad of a wait from the announcement until release.

Here's the bad news -- Goro is a pre-order bonus. The iconic character will be making an appearance for the first time as a fully playable character in competitive play in over eight years, and will be "available day of the launch" if you pre-order at select retailers.

There's no word on what his availability will be like after that period.

Eye stabbing and whale watching in this new Assassin's Creed Rogue video

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 02:30 AM PDT

Just three days ago we got some new screens for the upcoming Assassin's Creed Rogue, but it seems like Ubisoft is intent on releasing a slow trickle of media leading up to its November 11 release. Today, we have a video detailing the titular rogue, who was once an Assassin, but jumped ship (har har) and now identifies as a Templar.

The trailer is nice and serene, with a whale spotting, other wildlife interaction, and a friendly gathering at a local vista. Also, the protagonist stabs a dude in the eye, so there's that too. My favorite is when some enemies corner the turncoat on the edge of a cliff, as if he is not going to just jump off and land safely in a haystack at the bottom.

This classic 80s Angry Birds Transformers trailer isn't bad

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT

With the complete global saturation of the Michael Bay era Transformers, you rarely see the classic series get any love these days. Say what you will about the franchise, but this Angry Birds Transformers trailer is adorably retro, complete with authentic visuals and soundwork.

Since the game will likely be free, I'll give it a shot based on this video alone. Angry Birds Transformers will drop on October 15th.

Here's the entire Bayonetta 2 Nintendo Direct, check out the Star Fox costume

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT

I'm still surprised that Nintendo is pushing Bayonetta 2 as hard as it is when Wonderful 101 matched their brand effortlessly, and they barely promoted it. As I've said in the past, every time I've seen this game demoed by a Nintendo representative, it's extremely awkward as they kind of look away when Bayonetta is being sexual and shrug their shoulders when something really violent happens. Like, am I supposed to enjoy it at that point? Too bad, I'm loving it.

Anyway, Bayonetta 2 got a Nintendo Direct last night, which revealed a few big developments. Most notably, Rodin is playable in Tag Climax mode, and there's a Fox McCloud costume now. Check out the full broadcast above.

Of course we checked out Far Cry 4's elephant booty physics at PAX

Posted: 05 Sep 2014 12:00 AM PDT

Prior to this video being shot, Max may have taken a double dose of the assorted pills that truckers use to drive 36 consecutive hours. I can't be sure. It wasn't my day to keep track of him.

But, the point you should take away from this is how realistic that elephant's ass (probably) looks. With booty physics like that, it's no wonder Far Cry 4 ended up as one of our top games of PAX Prime.
