Ah, so that's where those silly Madden GIFs are coming from Posted: 04 Sep 2014 03:00 PM PDT I don't care at all about Madden, but GIFs? Damn you, Electronic Arts. You've won. The company has created a GIF maker for Madden NFL 15, "designed to help fans celebrate their favorite team's biggest plays and challenge their rivals." Looking over submissions in the real-time stream, most of us didn't get the memo or simply aren't listening. Let's see what you've got! Also, be sure to watch those glitch GIFs if you missed 'em.
Paradigm is a point-'n'-click game starring sloths and mutants Posted: 04 Sep 2014 02:00 PM PDT While adventure games are doing as well as ever, there's still not too many that hark back to the classic era games like Day of the Tentacle. They used to be really weird! Jacob Janerka's Paradigm seems to emulate that style well. It's set in the strange, post-apocalyptic world of Kruzs, home to our hero Paradigm and all manner of odd inhabitants. Poor Paradigm is the unfortunate offspring of some dodgy genetic tinkering and now finds himself running a computer repair store on some backwater planet, but he still has dreams of becoming a top electronic musician. Paradigm seems to have the right sort of offbeat weirdness that I like in my adventure games and Janerka is launching a Kickstarter soon to make the game a reality.
Help infect Raccoon City for free Resident Evil HD content Posted: 04 Sep 2014 01:30 PM PDT Capcom is promising "free additional content" for the Resident Evil remaster if we collectively manage to spread the T-Virus throughout Raccoon City, which isn't nearly as cool as it sounds. Really, there's just a website with a map of the city, and the epidemic grows as more people register their email, Facebook, or Capcom account. Bit of a missed opportunity. At the time of writing, the contagion is already at 30 percent -- so it shouldn't be too much longer now. I do like the Activity feed. "Mr. Two-Disc was infected at Warren Stadium."
If you ever get to play Upsilon Circuit, the world will be watching Posted: 04 Sep 2014 01:00 PM PDT At PAX Prime, I got my first and what could be only opportunity to try Upsilon Circuit. You see, once it goes live, eight people will be able to play at any given time. That's eight people, total. And the "permadeath" here is actually permanent. You lose? Your turn is done. While everyone else watches, waiting for their coveted chance in the spotlight to hack away at monsters and explore, they can directly influence the direction the game takes. The audience has control to, say, spec out players' skill trees, or spawn a deadly trap. Legend of Dungeon creator Robot Loves Kitty is billing this as part online game show, part action-RPG. At PAX, I saw more of the latter than the former, but Upsilon Circuit's Max Headroom-esque digital host Ronny Raygon was set up on a nearby television to talk smack to attendees. He got into an argument with some kid about whose glasses were cooler. Before you ask who would pay for something like this -- for a chance, maybe, to play once -- know that it's going to be free. In speaking with Robot Loves Kitty's Alix Stolzer, it sounds as if a large part of the monetization will be geared toward trolls or audience members who otherwise want to screw over the player characters, not help out. I told her that was a good idea. It's still early days for Upsilon Circuit and there are a lot of unknowns, but what was shown at PAX gave me confidence in this somewhat crazy, definitely ambitious project. If the game catches on and finds a stable audience, it's going to be a fascinating experiment to take part in.
The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 hits Steam Early Access today Posted: 04 Sep 2014 12:30 PM PDT The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is hitting Steam Early Access today. The sequel to the 2009 point-and-click adventure game was successfully funded via Kickstarter and looks just as charming as the original. I'm a huge fan of adventure games and I'm very impressed with the comeback the genre is making, so I hope we see many more quality titles like this one. The original Book of Unwritten Tales was surprisingly accessible. The classic high fantasy scene is set with the Alliance locked in conflict with the malevolent Shadow Army, and while both factions are comprised of textbook stuff, the tale they're involved in is actually engaging. I'm interested to see how the sequel plays out. Has anyone else given the series a look?
Alone in the Dark: Illumination looks like a horror game, alright Posted: 04 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT This concept art from Alone in the Dark: Illumination illustrate some of the environments in the game, and man, they're boring. From the grey concrete of an urban area to the grey scenic vistas of a mansion along the shore, this game is sure to have players adjusting their gamma settings. Alone in the Dark: Illumination's gameplay seems fairly interesting, at least. It's a spin on the Left 4 Dead concept of 4-player survival horror which has players making their way through levels with randomly generated elements such as enemy location, locked doors, and room layouts. Alone in the Dark: Illumination is set to release in November 2014. Meanwhile, I liked 2008's reboot. Alone in the Dark: Illumination art shows off dreary ambiance [VG247]
Posted: 04 Sep 2014 11:30 AM PDT Having only seen Dead Island 2 and not played it yet, I'm in agreement with Max here. It does look like a decent-enough zombie game, and a much better take on the property than Riptide .. but it's still Dead Island. There comes a point at which you've simply had enough. The southern California setting and warm tones are lovely, though. Big fan of those.
Assassin's Creed Unity and Rogue PAX impressions Posted: 04 Sep 2014 10:30 AM PDT I'm not sure how Max had this much energy in the middle of PAX Prime to speak in front of a camera about Assassin's Creed -- for over eight minutes, no less -- but he did. What a champ. Conceptually, I like the sound of chasing (and being chased by) assassins in Rogue, and the return of naval combat with enhancements is pleasing. Same goes for the great auks. Still, between the two, I imagine folks tend to be more interested in Unity, what with it being current-gen and all.
| Luminous Arc Infinity will have multiple endings Posted: 04 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT Famitsu has released details about Luminous Arc Infinity, the sequel to Marvelous's strategy RPG series for PlayStation Vita. It is said that the game will have multiple endings that are completely different from one another, but that's about all we can report right now. Details are still light on the upcoming Vita title, so in the meantime feast your eyes upon how utterly adorable it is. | New Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire trailer shows off additional features Posted: 04 Sep 2014 09:30 AM PDT The Pokémon Company has released a new trailer for the upcoming Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and boy, are they shaping up well. The trailer shows off the newly-remastered version of Hoenn, the face-offs against Team Aqua and Magma, Secret Bases, and Beauty Contests. I absolutely love the treatment they're giving these remakes, I especially liked the reflections on the water during the segment when they showed the player character surfing. I hope that with a little more work that they can also fix the slowdown that was prevalent when using 3D mode on Pokémon X and Y -- or was that just me? Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will be coming to Western shores on November 21 and to Europe on November 28. | Posted: 04 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT Warframe has just released on the Xbox One, and it's undergone some changes since it launched -- mostly good changes, meant to add more content to the game in the form of items and missions. It still fails in all of the same areas however, mostly its inability to craft an interesting world, and the free-to-play scheme that encourages far too much grinding. |
Styx: Master of Shadows apes Ubisoft with 'Assassin's Green' trailer Posted: 04 Sep 2014 08:30 AM PDT Styx: Master of Shadows is described as an "infiltration game," and it's coming next month from developer Cyanide Studios. It'll hit the PS4, Xbox One, and PC platforms, and promises expansive worlds and stealth gameplay. You can check out the above video to get a look for yourself at some of the gruesome deaths you'll be able to enact. The game is being released as a downloadable-only title.
Xbox One has cool invisibility feature in Japan where everyone ignores it Posted: 04 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT The Xbox One is now available in Japan. The country is continuing its proud and long-standing tradition of not caring about the Xbox, however. Twitter user @kaztsu has tweeted pictures of Akiba game stores readying to sell the console (PS4 launch, for comparison), cordoning off line areas with cones. Is it a line if no one is in it? Deep thoughts. Others have tweet similarly sad pictures, as corralled by Kotaku.
Sega outs Gearbox for lying in Aliens: Colonial Marines case Posted: 04 Sep 2014 07:45 AM PDT Sega has released a statement placing the majority of the blame for the misrepresentation of Aliens: Colonial Marines to customers firmly on Gearbox, especially Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford. Sega has alleged that Gearbox did indeed create the Aliens: Colonial Marines demos shown at E3 and other trade shows in 2011, and that Gearbox did tell Sega that the demo was indicative of the final product. This information, which was filed by Sega in an effort to block Gearbox from achieving its goal of being repudiated of responsibility in the case, included multiple internal emails indicating that Gearbox and Sega were working closely together on marketing the game. Sega gave eight examples in which Gearbox made announcements either to the press or the public without Sega's permission, including instances where they had released information Sega had earlier asked Gearbox not to reveal in breach of the marketing agreement between the two companies. But that's not all. There was another internal email where Sega PR manager Matt Eyre confronted Gearbox about the leaks, which included sensitive information such as website posts and more. As a result, he was told that all of that mess was a direct result of Randy Pitchford "doing whatever the fuck he likes." Okay then. Sega also denied that Gearbox did not earn any royalties on Aliens: Colonial Marines, saying they had paid out millions in "advance" royalties, and requested the court ignore Gearbox's request to be removed from the suit. The filing also claims that Gearbox was offered the chance to be part of the settlement that Sega agreed to last month for a buy-in of $750,000, a settlement that Gearbox is fighting to have thrown out of court by claiming they were not part of the settlement negotiations. The next hearing for the case is being held on October 29. Gearbox boss does “whatever the fuck he likes”, says Sega [VG247]
Like laughing at bad things? Watch this live-action Destiny trailer Posted: 04 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT Maybe with twelve tequilas and friends around I could laugh at this. As it stands, sitting home alone and horribly sober, I just kind of cringed at every embarrassing one liner (which is all of the dialogue, actually) and paused the video before it was halfway finished. Share my pain.
How Final Fantasy Type-0 came to PS4 and Xbox One Posted: 04 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT Final Fantasy Type-0 HD wasn't on the show floor at PAX last weekend, but Square Enix did show off the action RPG behind closed doors. During our meeting with the publisher, Destructoid touched base with director Hajime Tabata to discuss how different the game is from the rest of the series. We also learned about the Tabata's strong desire to create a MOBA. Now let me tell you about the part where we delved into title's strange development history.
Why are we excited about these New 3DS packaging shots? Posted: 04 Sep 2014 06:45 AM PDT An informal poll of the Destructoid staff reveals that we're all senselessly excited for this New 3DS. It doesn't make sense. None of us need one. We should be mad at Nintendo for having us wanting another iteration. But we're all stupidly excited for it and it hasn't even been announced for our territory yet. I'm even excited by these new box shots from Amazon.jp. Holy hell are the New 3DS boxes cute. The white one is cute as f*ck. Not so much for the LL versions, though. Boring! Speaking of cute, look at the new cover plates for the New 3DS. I can't even. I love this one. And I need this mint-colored dock base too. Oh, and there's the Nintendo micro SDHC cards. Hurrrrrrrrr. Damn it, Nintendo!
Destiny fans create their own tools for endgame raid matchmaking Posted: 04 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT Destiny is going to have MMO-like raids. What do I mean by that? Well, you're going to need to manually find six people to access some endgame content, which will deliver the biggest challenge the game has to offer. As someone who has been playing MMOs since the 90s, I'm into that. Some of you however, are not. Because Bungie isn't budging yet on this idea, gamers have taken it upon themselves to create a few communites for the cause. A few concepts are the "Guardian Finder" from That Wizard Came From The Moon, and the Dads of Destiny. I'm sure more options will pop up as time goes on, which should allow you to get into raids more efficiently. I think I'm going to roll a Titan, going into the Defender subclass later on. Tanks are always scarce in every game.
Tokyo Game Show expects to break records with over 700 games, 400 exhibitors Posted: 04 Sep 2014 06:15 AM PDT Tokyo Game Show 2014 is going to be good. CESA sends word that they've planned a record-breaking year this year with 417 exhibitors showing 731 games. This is 75 more exhibitors than last year and more than double the number of games shown last year. This isn't even the final count for then number of exhibitors. Oh my. Over 80 of those titles are going to be shown in the Indie Game Area. Virtual reality headsets will also be shown at the show, set to kick off in about two week at Makuhari Messe, in Chiba. Add in cosplay, crowds, ramen, and weird swag, and you have a pretty good show for this year. From what we're hearing, expect some console and PC announcements from TGS 2014, as well as some first showings of upcoming hot games. Destructoid will be there to get smothered in the crowds.
Atlus shares first look the Persona Q localization Posted: 04 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT It's always strange hearing a historically silent protagonist speak for the first time, and things are doubly weird for us here today thanks to these English trailers for Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth. Boy, is it unsettling hearing those guys talk! Persona Q launches in North America and Europe this November.
Epic Games gives Unreal Engine 4 to schools for free Posted: 04 Sep 2014 05:45 AM PDT Schools and universities have free, unlimited access to Unreal Engine 4 now, thanks to Epic Games. These organizations need only to visit Epic's dedicated page for access for their staff and students. When I was in school I learned typing, some useless math formulas, and too much about American history. Useless sh*t. Folks in school now are going to be able to make games using the most popular game making toolset. That is not fair! “Nothing is stopping students from honing the skills needed to enter the range of fields using Unreal Engine technology, from entertainment software and film to visualization, healthcare simulation and military training,” said Ray Davis, general manager, Unreal Engine. “Students who know Unreal Engine technology have a huge advantage when it comes to job placement.”
Adventure Island, Wild Guns, and River King coming to the Virtual Console Posted: 04 Sep 2014 05:30 AM PDT Nintendo has just sent over word on a few upcoming Virtual Console games, confirming Adventure Island (Wii U, September 11th), Wild Guns (Wii U, September 18th), and Legend of the River King 2 (3DS, September 18th). All of these will arrive with your standard Nintendo Download thursday updates. Adventure Island is of course a classic, often times mentioned as a notorious retro game. Although I'm more of fan of the sequels, it's definitely worth checking out if you have patience. Legend of the River King 2 is considerably more rare, and is essentially Harvest Moon: Fishing Edition.
I didn't think Dreadnought's hulking ships could be as fun as they are Posted: 04 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT A very specific connotation pops into your mind when you think about spaceship fighters. Your brain's flooded with thoughts of dogfighting ships zooming around, barrel rolling, and flipping end-over-end to fire unceasing space lasers at equally nimble opponents. That's not what Dreadnought is; not even close, in fact. Dreadnought -- which is currently only slated for PC -- is a thinker's game, a title for those more adept at thinking two steps ahead rather than those that rely on their twitchy fingers. It's a chess match in space -- a chess match that trades in kings and queens for lumbering, massive ships that actually feel like they have weight to them.
Posted: 04 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT There's a great deal of turmoil in the videogame industry as of late. Many of you know that, and want some sort of resolution. We at Destructoid cannot speak for our colleagues or the people we cover, but wish to clarify our stance on these issues. Destructoid condemns hate, discrimination, or harassment of anyone ever. While we support thoughtful discourse, there is a very bold line between criticism and harassment. We do not plan to wade into those waters and hope you will not either. This is a very small industry, and our job involves getting to know the individuals behind the games we play. Many prominent figures in the business have worked at Destructoid in the past. Those relationships don't simply vanish when they move onto other things. They are, however, set aside and never taken into consideration when we evaluate games. We also ask for disclosures upfront as part of our employment paperwork. Destructoid is but one voice among an echoing canyon of reverberating noise right now. We can't magically resolve all of the issues that plague the videogame industry. But, we feel it's important to disclose some thoughts and policies that the staff holds dear. At the end of the day, we really just want to do our best to serve you the best we can, and we believe the way to do that is by being good and honest people.
Activision announces sidescroller Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze Posted: 04 Sep 2014 04:15 AM PDT If you are like me, you have not really followed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in a couple decades. The last thing I really remember was 1991's The Secret of the Ooze and Turtles in Time on the Super NES. Sure, I have heard snippets about the movie that came out this year, but what I was not at all aware about was the Nickelodeon show currently in its second season. That show is what Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze is based on. Specifically, it looks to bridge the gap in story between the second and third seasons. Though it may all feel unfamiliar to those who have not been following the series closely, there is still some good news for the jaded former Turtles fans: it is being developed by WayForward (Contra 4, DuckTales: Remastered) as a 2D sidescroller. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze is set to release this fall on 3DS, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. There is no word at this time for any plans of a current generation console release.
Nintendo Download: Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call demo Posted: 04 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT After a fairly enjoyable Mega Man August streak, we're back to the normal routine, and it isn't particularly exciting this week. On the Wii U we have Nobunaga's Ambition, Cubeman 2, and Ice Cream Surfer. For the 3DS, we have Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight, Tappingo 2, and demos for Bit Boy!! Arcade and Glory of Generals. There's also another high profile demo of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call.
Square Enix announces Rise of Mana for PS Vita Posted: 04 Sep 2014 03:30 AM PDT Square Enix has revealed plans to bring Rise of Mana to PlayStation Vita. The latest entry in the long-running Mana series, Rise of Mana is a free-to-play action role-playing game that first burst onto iOS and Android devices earlier this year. Now it's set to make the jump to Vita this winter in Japan. Square Enix has not yet announced a localization for other markets. The publisher will also port Deadman's Cross to Vita this winter. The zombie-themed card battle shooter launched on mobile devices in North America and Europe last year. 「東京ゲームショウ2014」特設サイトオープン![Square Enix]
| Ryse: Son of Rome is coming to Steam in October Posted: 04 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT Ryse: Son of Rome is coming to the PC on October 10th for $40. I'll arrive bundled in with all the DLC included so far and a full soundtrack (for pre-orders), as well as 4K resolution support. In case you missed our coverage during the launch of the Xbox One, the campaign, the core of the game, is not very good. But if you're interested in the gladiator arena portion of the game (which is actually fun), picking it up on a Steam sale wouldn't be a bad idea. A very, very deep discounted Steam sale. | Posted: 04 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT Moving to a new school always sucks. You need worry to about grades, pick classes, join a club, try to find new friends, and fit into an existing social hierarchy. Imagine that but with the added confusion of all your schoolmates being birds. |
| Microsoft offers free game if you buy an Xbox One next week Posted: 04 Sep 2014 01:44 AM PDT If you're keen on buying an Xbox One soon, Microsoft has a deal going on next week. From September 7 through September 13, if you buy an Xbox One from "participating retailers," you can get a free game. Exact details aren't given as to how you'll be able to redeem the promotion ("see your local retailer" is the suggestion given), but Microsoft notes that any game at $59.99 and under will be eligible. | Posted: 04 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT Full disclosure - I have met Phil Fish on one occasion. We bickered a little bit about if Fez would be a good fit for Nintendo 3DS, (I thought it would be good, Fish disagreed) but there was no hostility there. I was excited about his game; he was receptive and engaging towards that excitement. That was about it. Since then we've chatted online here and there. I can't remember about what. He is someone who wants to make great videogames. That's reason enough for me to wish him well. About two weeks ago, Fish and his company Polytron were reportedly hacked, suffering multiple breaches of secured information. Below is the official press release from Fish regarding these events. |
| PS Vita rhythm game IA/VT Colorful delayed to 2015 Posted: 04 Sep 2014 12:30 AM PDT IA/VT Colorful has been pushed back to 2015, Marvelous announced today. The PlayStation Vita rhythm game was first slated to launch in Japan this summer, before being postponed until autumn. The reason behind the latest delay comes with concerns over quality. IA/VT Colorful has not been confirmed for a western release, though individuals at Marvelous subsidiary XSEED have expressed interest in localizing the project.
