| We attempted to play D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die Posted: 23 Sep 2014 03:00 PM PDT
That certainly is some sort of video game. I think. Honestly, if I didn't have this whole experience on video, I might think there was a gas leak in my house making us go all stupid and insane. |
| The ghost from P.T. is in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Posted: 23 Sep 2014 02:00 PM PDT In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, players will be able to use Lisa, the apparition from P.T., as a decoy. It's times like these that remind me why I adore videogames. The little touches, y'know? The weirder, the better -- that's where series like MGS go so right. Granted, this stuff will be old news for some of you, but I wanted to share the video for those of you who, like me, might have missed it over the weekend. It's not to be missed. |
| Final Fantasy could come to Vita if demand is there Posted: 23 Sep 2014 01:00 PM PDT The Final Fantasy series could make an appearance on PlayStation Vita, Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata told IGN. And if that happens there would likely be an emphasis on multiplayer. “Hypothetically, personally speaking, if I were to work on a Final Fantasy game for, say, the Vita platform, I would love to implement elements of co-op play and versus play, and have a Final Fantasy that has roots in allowing for people to play together.” According to Tabata, the deciding factor behind such a project getting the green light is fan outcry. It's a matter of players voicing their desires and Square Enix having the will to follow through. The future of Final Fantasy on Vita depends on fan demand [IGN] |
| That new Gauntlet game is out today on PC Posted: 23 Sep 2014 12:30 PM PDT Gauntlet is upon us yet again on Steam this week, with a PC release by developer Arrowhead Game Studios. Arrowhead is probably best known for developing Magicka -- and has carried over a simplified version of its spell system to the Wizard character in Gauntlet. We'll be checking it out soon, but so far the few user reviews that are on Steam have been positive. Gauntlet [Steam] |
| Guild Wars 2 is throwing a free trial week soon Posted: 23 Sep 2014 12:00 PM PDT On Thursday, ArenaNet will kick off a week-long trial for Guild Wars 2. You'll be able to play the MMORPG for free from 12:00am Pacific on September 25 until 11:59pm Pacific on October 1. Trial accounts can be opened ahead of time, so I'd suggest you go take care of that now to maximize your time. Note: there are some restrictions placed on trial players. Just last week, community member Solar Pony Django put up a blog to generate interest in potentially starting a Destructoid guild. Take a look. Keep forgetting I own this game. | Lords of the Fallen has a 'medieval BFG' Posted: 23 Sep 2014 11:30 AM PDT This gameplay video of Lords of the Fallen gives a look at "Infiltrator" -- a new boss from what seems to be midway through the game. That's neat, but the real winner here is the glimpse at the magic gauntlets. The reason the magic gauntlets are important is because the developer describes them as a "medieval BFG." That's a pretty heavy description. They can be decked out in a variety of ways, and the video seems to show them acting as a flamethrower and a turret. Maybe not as gamebreaking as the BFG, but cool nonetheless. |
| Posted: 23 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT A new Dota 2 update hit today, and THEY CHANGED EVERYTHING. Two runes. New rune. THE MAP IS DIFFERENT. Reworked Heroes. Chen can take over Ancients. Something happened to Riki, I'm not sure what exactly? THE MAP IS DIFFERENT. Did I mention that they changed the map and added a rune? |
| Posted: 23 Sep 2014 10:30 AM PDT [Disclosure: I backed the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter and as such received an Early Access copy of the game.] Wasteland 2 is one of the projects that saw success in the wake of Double Fine's Broken Age. Just a month after Tim Schafer's adventure game project blew past its funding goal, Brian Fargo and inXile Entertainment also saw their Kickstarter pull in millions of dollars. Despite the original Wasteland dating back to 1988, there were more than enough fans who wanted to see a sequel made. So Wasteland 2 exists in a strange position where the fans who remember the original played a very different game than the one that's been delivered in 2014. While PC RPGs have changed a lot over the years, Wasteland 2 is still very old-school in a lot of ways -- some good, some bad -- and remains true to its intentions and origins. |
| 10 million people bought a new iPhone during launch weekend Posted: 23 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT Apple sold 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models during launch weekend, topping the sales record previously set by the iPhone 5S and 5C last year, the company has announced. At this point, you have to imagine a snowball effect -- each new launch will outpace the prior one, regardless of whether or not the advances genuinely warrant another purchase. So many people satisfying their technolust and I'm just sitting here with a lowly iPhone 4. |
| Skyrim can only get better when you play it as Ronnie James Dio Posted: 23 Sep 2014 09:30 AM PDT Max and I decided to start a playthrough of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as the late Ronnie James Dio, the heavy metal legend who had a music video that kinda looks like Skyrim. There's only one problem; Max can't remember any Dio lyrics correctly. It's okay though; we had good beer and bad tacos. |
| Rocksmith 2014 plays its encore on Xbox One and PS4 Posted: 23 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT Although it was outed by ESRB ratings almost a month ago, Ubisoft just got around to formally announcing that Rocksmith 2014 will be headed to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on November 4 of this year. For the most part, this iteration of the musical tutor seems to be largely unchanged. However, one welcomed addition is the inclusion of integrated streaming and capture features which will bolster the instructional and boasting potential of the game. It'll also support Vita Remote Play, giving players the ability to watch and study songs' charts without providing any input. Any adopters looking to upgrade from Xbox 360 or PS3 to their current-gen counterpart can take solace in the fact that all purchased downloadable content will transfer over without additional fees. If this is your first foray into Rocksmith, the game's 50-plus on-disc songs should keep you honing your six-stringed craft for quite a while. |

| WWE 2K15 trailer takes us back to 1999 with 'Bawitdaba' Posted: 23 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT The first gameplay trailer for WWE 2K15 features plenty of high-flying action from almost every WWE superstar imaginable. There are babyfaces and heels everywhere, from Daniel Bryan rousing the crowd with his signature "YES!" chant to Triple H nailing a Pedigree. Oh yeah, and Bray Wyatt does his creepy upside-down spiderwalk thing. But, the real star here is the emergence of Kid Rock's "Bawitdaba" -- a rap metal anthem long forgotten by the middle schoolers of 1999. Hopefully this is a hint at impending Kid Rock DLC when the game launches on October 28. We love you, Sting, but that would be the real showstopper. |
| Xbox discounts Spider-Man, 1001 Spikes, and a lot of Mass Effect DLC Posted: 23 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT As part of this week's Deals with Gold promotion, Microsoft's slashing prices by a third across three Xbox One games. Web-slinging Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($40.19), shadowy noir Contrast ($10.04), and death simulator 1001 Spikes ($10.04) are all temporarily available at a 33 percent discount. Microsoft hasn't forgotten about Xbox 360, though. Amazing Spider-Man ($13.59), Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($19.99), Fuse ($6.79), Syndicate ($4.99), Grid Autosport ($20.99), and a ton of Mass Effect 2 and 3 DLC are all on sale. Valve's The Orange Box is also 75 percent off regular price, going for a measly $4.99. In the event that you pick that up, you should mail the remaining $15 to Valve because you feel so guilty for borderline stealing one of the best game bundles ever. | Mike saw Bloodborne and Until Dawn at PAX! Posted: 23 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT Our pal Mike Cosimano (who, in all seriousness rivals Jonathan Holmes when it comes to kindness and all-around positivity) was our video editing man at PAX Prime earlier this month. I made sure he got a chance to check out some games he wanted to see, and two of those games were Until Dawn and Bloodborne. Both of those games were too scary for me and Bill to cover, so Mike did us a solid and summed up his thoughts in this lovely video, though first he had to go to back to college and then attend a Transformers convention. Sorry for the delay! |
| Master Chief Collection seems to deliver on most of its promises Posted: 23 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT I recently got to check out Halo: The Master Chief Collection at an Xbox event, which gave me a big ol' happy, because I love me some sweet, sweet Covie-killing action. In 343 Industries' presentation, they spent half of the time talking about The Halo Channel, which seems neat if you're into that sort of thing, but it rather bores me. They also informed us that Halo 3 and Halo 4 are being up-scaled to 1080p, and touched up a bit with current-gen lighting effects and such. The main focus of the Halo showing was, of course, Halo 2: Anniversary Edition. We saw a sample of the cutscenes from this overhaul, all of which are being redone, and which looks incredible compared to the original. We also got to put our hands on some of the multiplayer, which feels just like the original, with the exception of the Gungoose. |
| Blizzard kills off Titan seven years into development Posted: 23 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT Blizzard's next massively multiplayer game, Titan, was never announced, but the company has spoken about the project off and on these past several years. Here's another update: the game has been canceled -- "it didn't come together," CEO Mike Morhaime tells Polygon. "We didn't find the fun," he explained. "We didn't find the passion. We talked about how we put it through a reevaluation period, and actually, what we reevaluated is whether that's the game we really wanted to be making. The answer is no." Blizzard would sooner cancel a game that's been in production for seven years than risk damaging its relationship with fans, senior VP of story and franchise development Chris Metzen said. "We took a step back and realized that it had some cool hooks. It definitely had some merit as a big, broad idea, but it didn't come together. It did not distill ... For all our good intentions and our experience and the pure craftsmanship that we brought together, we had to make that call." Blizzard will continue to support World of Warcraft but in terms of creating a new game in that space, "that's not where we want to be spending our time [right now]," Morhaime said. | Only 20 people beat the Bloodborne demo at PAX Posted: 23 Sep 2014 05:30 AM PDT Leading into Tokyo Game Show, Bloodborne producer Masaaki Yamagiwa issued a challenge of sorts to players hoping to best the demo. He and Sony marketing manager Yasuhiro Kitao have since shared the results, as reported by DualShockers, and they're not great. 20 people at PAX Prime out of a staggering 3,500 successfully took down the howling Cleric Beast, while approximately 40 TGS attendees out of 1,250 slayed the boss. The demo was hard, don't get me wrong, but not that hard -- or so I thought. A few well-timed molotovs could be used to bring down entire groups of foes and it was possible to run past the intimidating werewolves. Also, lots of healing items lurking about. Frankly, one of the biggest hurdles was the lack of familiarity with the controls. While the boss hit hard, it was so large that you could stay right underneath it and be relatively free from harm. | Goat Simulator is selling very well on Android and iOS Posted: 23 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT Goat Simulator is now on Android and iOS in addition to the PC, and according to Coffee Stain Studios, it's selling well -- very well in fact. So far they've reported over 100,000 sales over both platforms, which they consider to be over expectations. Plans for the future are kind of slim, as the team didn't think it would be this successful. The focus for now is to concentrate on mobile version bugs for a few weeks, then more updates will be provided on future content. Goat Simulator iOS and Android - Some more info! | Nintendo reveals new see-through 2DS for Pokemon Posted: 23 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT Nintendo has announced two new 2DS bundles for the UK, coinciding with the release of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. They'll come in red and blue colors respectively, and will feature a transparent design -- which really takes me back to the Game Boy Color era and beyond. Both models will launch on November 28th as bundles (November 7th as standalones), and will feature the corresponding game for free installed on the 4GB SD card. |
| Final Fantasy Record Keeper gameplay shows 3D to 2D transformation Posted: 23 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT Final Fantasy Record Keeper is a mobile game that's set to drop this month in Japan, with an international release at some point in the future. The gist is that you'll visit different worlds from the franchise, recruit characters, and fight with the classic active time battle system. This new footage shows off some gameplay, including the 2D-ification of Final Fantasy VII's Mako reactor. This looks a lot more promising than All the Bravest, but Square Enix has so many mobile games out at this point that it's hard to keep track of what's bad, what's overpriced, and what's worth buying. Just keep it simple from here on out, guys. |
| Toukiden: Kiwami brings the hunt to Vita next year Posted: 23 Sep 2014 02:30 AM PDT Toukiden: Kiwami is coming to North America and Europe in 2015, Koei Tecmo confirmed today. An expanded version of Toukiden: The Age of Demons, Kiwami features an extended story with new characters, fresh weapons and abilities, and twice as many demons to use them on. Toukiden was developed by Dynasty Warriors studio Omega Force, and released earlier this year on PlayStation Vita. The title is a grim take on Capcom's Monster Hunter series, wherein warriors known as Slayers defend the last vestiges of humanity from an endless tide of demons. Koei Tecmo [Twitter] |
| Triad Wars, the PC-only follow-up to Sleeping Dogs, is unveiled Posted: 23 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT The follow-up to Sleeping Dogs, Triad Wars, has been officially unveiled. Before you get your hopes up, realize that it's a PC-only game, and it's free-to-play. It'll take place in Hong Kong yet again, and you'll need to "establish your turf," as well as build an operation and acquire money. Driving gameplay and gunplay are in. Feel free to sign up for the closed beta if it interests you, and it'll be dropping in 2015. A lot of people are saying "this ruins the chance of a Sleeping Dogs 2," but I just don't see it, since Sleeping Dogs 2 wasn't a given anyways. Side projects don't eliminate full sequels outright -- if anything, they fund them. I understand the total disinterest in Triad Wars though. Register for Closed Beta [Triad Wars] |
| Destiny's 'Queen's Wrath' event is underway, here is what it brings Posted: 23 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT Bungie is currently running a special event in Destiny that basically consists of extra bounties and an extra faction to interact with. It'll run from September 23rd through October 6th, and will allow you to earn rare weapons, class items, shaders, and emblems. To start the quests, just got to the regular bounty vendor in the Tower -- he'll now provide you with Queen bounties. To locate the Queen's emissary, it's behind the bounty robot in the area that was previously inaccessible. If you do a bounty, you'll get a chance to do a random story mission (existing ones, not new ones) for two fixed legendary pieces. It's a pretty middling event, basically. You're just taking bounty missions for one of the many factions, and the rewards aren't even that great. Bungie can do better than this. While they're at it, how about not giving us constant bounties for the Salvage gametype when the event isn't even live? |
| Remnants of Ice Climbers found in Smash Bros. 3DS Posted: 23 Sep 2014 12:00 AM PDT It's public knowledge at this point that the Ice Climbers were removed from Smash Bros. 3DS because of hardware limitations. Because Sakurai wanted complete character parity between the 3DS and Wii U, they were taken out. But apparently some last remnant of them remains in the game, as player Gema Yue has allegedly uncovered an odd glitch in the Japanese version. If you play as Villager and KO at least two Dr. Marios at once with 100% damage, a "Nana, Popo" chant will happen -- the names of the two Ice Climbers. I've tested this with the US version of the game, replicating the stage and all the requirements, and it still chants "Villager," so this may only be for the Japanese version if this video is legitimate (and since it has been replicated in Japan by other YouTube channels, it likely is) -- or there may be extra parameters involved. As a side note, I've unlocked every character and level in the full game -- expect our full review early Friday morning. |
