| Valve rolls out major Steam redesign Posted: 22 Sep 2014 01:30 PM PDT As a platform, Steam hasn't been able to keep up with the rate at which new games are coming out -- there were more than 1,300 releases in the last nine months alone, says Valve -- but today's so-called Discovery update intends to address that while also making everything more blue. The home page now offers a feed of game recommendations (keep scrolling down, and down, and then down some more) and further customization. For instance, if you want, you can opt out of seeing Steam Early Access titles or games only available for pre-purchase in certain banners. Users can create lists of games that are worth checking out as "Curators," a feature Valve's Gabe Newell spoke of some time ago. (Will it eventually be monetized?) There's also a personalized Discovery queue to sift through and more in-depth search tools. Valve's overview of the new storefront and the list of changes can be found here. |
| Sunset Overdrive's pretty solid, but I think I'm over it Posted: 22 Sep 2014 10:30 AM PDT
For whatever reason, I didn't get a chance to check it out at E3 or PAX, and a couple weeks ago, I was giddy to finally sit down and check it out. I played through the first hour or so, and while it seems like a pretty solid game, I came away feeling totally uninterested. Maybe it's a case of hype fatigue, or maybe I'm just too old for energy drinks and parkour. Maybe I just need something weirder to scratch that itch. Anyway, check out the video for my full thoughts. |
| Create a pharmaceutical empire in Big Pharma Posted: 22 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT One-man studio Twice Circled has announced a new strategy sim for PC that will put players in control of a pharmaceutical business and, damn, what a great setup that is. Big Pharma is described as "a really tight puzzle game about production lines" but there's the larger context of the industry -- seasonality, patents, and morals -- that has me interested. Developer Tim Wicksteed also has a blog post up about one of his major influences, Transport Tycoon, in which he covers the successes and failures of the classic Chris Sawyer title and his plans for building on that foundation with Big Pharma. It's worth a look, too. |
| Sunset Overdrive shows how live-action trailers should be done Posted: 22 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT Live-action trailers for videogames can be entirely hit or miss. It's to the point where I'm usually curious to check them out even if I have little if any interest in the source material. Will they be awesome, or a total train wreck? Either way, I'm willing to find out. The creators of this Sunset Overdrive trailer went in a much different direction than I was anticipating -- I figured they'd bring the game's over-the-top weapons, characters, and setting to life and call it a day. Not so! I even laughed a few times. |
| LittleBigPlanet 3's Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes costumes are adorbs Posted: 22 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT I'm still freaking out over this weekend's big Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes news -- that you can capture and raise a wolf pup and it'll grow up to one day wear an eye patch. The best. This LittleBigPlanet news isn't on that level, obviously, but it's cute/cool too: there's going to be a Ground Zeroes costume pack for LittleBigPlanet 3 including Skull Face and Miller outfits. No word on when this stuff is supposed to hit, but the game itself isn't releasing until November 18. LittleBigPlanet 3: MGS and The Order: 1886 Costumes En Route! [PlayStation Blog] |
| These Super Smash Bros. commercials are silly Posted: 22 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT I mean, yeah, what else would you expect? It's Super Smash Bros. Nintendo's television spots for the 3DS game feature the tagline "Settle it in Smash," which is a good fit for the series, admittedly, but I'm far more interested in that Doc Louis cameo. |
| Grand Theft Auto V in first person might be fun Posted: 22 Sep 2014 07:00 AM PDT The initial talk of an upgraded Grand Theft Auto V for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One didn't sound particularly compelling to me back when the new versions were heavily rumored, but the more I hear about what exactly is being upgraded, the more that's changing. Over the weekend, Rockstar put up a Q&A page on its website detailing new features for GTA V and GTA Online on those platforms and a few of the additions are intriguing. Notably: a first-person mode on foot and in vehicles, with the latter view showing "the interior of the vehicle, including working speedometers, tachometers, dash lights, and more." The site mentioned new animals and an "overhauled character selection screen," too. The page was eventually taken down, but not before this information was screencapped. | Mr. Resetti is in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, you guys Posted: 22 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT There's yet another tie-in for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and it's the best one yet -- Animal Crossing! Players will be able to make their Felyne companions look like Mr. Resetti and Isabelle. Now, I'm not much of a Monster Hunter fan, but the chance to play alongside Resetti without him yelling at me, for once? Might just cave, depending on what's needed to acquire the outfits. It's funny how these characters appear normally in Monster Hunter but Sonic the Hedgehog looks like he was skinned for his crossover. Guy can't catch a break. |
| PS4 online multiplayer will be free this weekend Posted: 22 Sep 2014 06:00 AM PDT Weekends sure are good at going by too quickly. It's only Monday morning and I'm already wishing it were the end of the week. Sony isn't helping, either -- its unlocking online multiplayer for PlayStation 4 owners who aren't subscribed to PlayStation Plus this weekend. Those users will gain access starting Friday, September 26 at 12:01am Pacific and it'll carry through Sunday, September 28 at 11:59pm Pacific. All you need to do to take part is log into your system during those times -- simple as that. What to play, though. | Reflex is a new challenger in twitch FPS gaming Posted: 22 Sep 2014 05:30 AM PDT Watching the cycles that the game industry goes through over the years is interesting. We have previously seen adventure games and horror games peak in popularity, wane, and then come back through the indie scene. It seems like twitch first-person shooters might be doing the same. First, we saw the silly-named Toxikk, and now we have Reflex in the works. Turbo Pixel's Reflex (not to be confused with SITER SKAIN's RefleX) looks like it incorporates a momentum-based movement system almost akin to Tribes: Ascend, but limits the play to small arenas. The video above shows off gameplay in fairly sterile arenas, along with concept art for how the game might look in the end. So far, it looks fun; the studio just needs to make it prettier. For that, the team has turned to Kickstarter, and is seeking a substantial $360,000 AUD. That may be a tall order for a relatively unknown studio, but it has already managed to raise almost $30,000 AUD in just a few days. Reflex is hoping to make it through Steam's Greenlight process and release in late 2016. |
| Dark Souls II's third DLC, 'Crown of the Ivory King' delayed Posted: 22 Sep 2014 05:00 AM PDT Bandai Namco has announced that the third (and presumably final) DLC for Dark Souls II, the Crown of the Ivory King, has been delayed by one week. Originally it was set for this Wednesday, but now it's due on September 30th and October 1st, depending on the platform. Apparently the delay is due to polish concerns to ensure the "highest level of quality possible." While the previous two DLCs were better than I thought they were going to be, I hope the third one really knocks it out of the park. | Assassin's Creed Unity's DLC will take you to China with a female protagonist Posted: 22 Sep 2014 04:35 AM PDT Ubisoft has unveiled the current DLC plans for Assassin's Creed Unity by way of their Season Pass, and it's a doozy. Firstly, you'll be getting a new story campaign that takes place after Unity. It deals with a set of underground crypts. You'll also get more missions in Paris, as well as 30 pieces of equipment. But the biggest part is arguably the last bit of content -- Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China. It's a stand-alone story that lets you deal with a completely new setting with 2.5D gameplay. You'll climb and tumble on the Great Wall of China as you complete missions for the Assassins of the Chinese Brotherhood. It will also feature a female protagonist named Shao Jun, from Assassin's Creed: Embers. |
| Poncho is a cute robot in a lovely open-world platformer Posted: 22 Sep 2014 04:30 AM PDT It always hurts my heart a little bit to see what looks like a great game failing to gain traction on Kickstarter. Certainly, the crowdfunding community is more cautious these days than it used to be, and with good reason in a lot of cases. As a result, Poncho is up there with a solid concept, great pixel art, and a modest goal, but its chances of success are not looking good unless it sees a surge of support soon. One line of the pitch really intrigues me. It says "the world of Poncho has no limits on the Z [axis]," but in the videos displayed, the robot protagonist only ever travels between three different parallax layers. Still, there are buildings in the far background, and if that line is to be taken at face value, then Poncho can eventually reach those buildings and even go beyond. The Kickstarter campaign for Poncho is seeking an initial goal of £22,500, but it has only raised about £4,000 with nine days left. It is planned for release on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Ouya, with additional platforms possible depending on funding. |
| Ultra Street Fighter IV is getting an Omega Mode with modified movesets Posted: 22 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT Ultra Street Fighter IV is still getting updated, and the newest mode to hit the game will be the Omega Mode. Capcom notes that this severely mixes up character's normal and special moves. Characters will play differently, and there's no real balancing act involved -- it's just something to play for fun. As a result, there will only be unranked matches to play online. In terms of other updates, general fixes to online play are coming, as well as a big PC update in the form of patch 1.04. | PlayStation TV launches in North America next month Posted: 22 Sep 2014 03:45 AM PDT PlayStation TV launches across North America starting October 14, Sony announced today. The new set-top box plays a selection of Vita games, PSP titles, PS One Classics, PS3 games via PlayStation Now, and can stream PS4 content via Remote Play. PS TV will be available standalone for $100 or as part of a $140 bundle, including an 8GB memory card, The LEGO Movie Videogame and a DualShock 3 controller. It comes with 1GB of built-in storage out of the box, meaning that while a pricey memory card isn't necessarily required, folks won't be able to get too far without one. The device will launch in Europe one month later, crossing the pond on November 14. There, the device will retail for £85/€100 and include a voucher for three digital Vita games: Worms Revolution Extreme, Velocity Ultra and OlliOlli. While the PS TV will support nearly 700 titles available at launch, it doesn't play everything. You can check out the full list of compatible Vita games right here. | Here's a full playthrough of the second Mighty No. 9 beta stage Posted: 22 Sep 2014 03:30 AM PDT The second Mighty No. 9 beta stage focuses on the female No. 2 boss, who is a master of ice and water. In addition to my playthrough of the first stage here, you can also get a better look at the next phase of the beta above in my second playthrough. I actually liked this level a bit more. While the first stage (No. 5) was a standard romp throughout, I like how No. 2's level mixed things up with a water section as well as an ice portion, and seeing the fire-based No. 1 in the background was a little more interesting than No. 2's appearance in the original beta stage. My main concern at this point is the art direction, which can look a bit drab in terms of the level design (the two are very similar) and the enemy models themselves, despite the fact that they have great base mechanics. Since this is a beta the full version will no doubt have a bit more flair, but how much flair is yet to be seen. |
| A monster squat competition is one thing that happens in 24 Killers Posted: 22 Sep 2014 03:15 AM PDT Watching the above video, I thought I had a pretty good handle on what happens in 24 Killers. After finishing it, I felt more confused than before. Upon investigating the Kickstarter campaign, it turns out that 24 Killers follows a skeleton hunting down four spirits in an island town full of monsters, and the squat competition is Malbro (listed as "the swolest mallow in town"), just one of dozens of different interactions. Weird concept, sprites with only a few colors each, and some moai heads. Why does this feel familiar? Oh right, because it is being made by Todd Luke, who previously developed Winnose for Adult Swim Games. 24 Killers has already reached its initial funding goal of $4,000 with less than three days left in its campaign. It is set to release on Linux, Mac, and Windows. |
| Final Fantasy XIV's new TGS trailer features Shiva Posted: 22 Sep 2014 03:00 AM PDT Later this year (hopefully in October), Final Fantasy XIV is getting a new major update. As patch 2.4, it's called "Dreams of Ice," and will feature Shiva as the core focus. Additional content includes three new dungeons (two Hard Modes and one new one), more housing plots, the Rogue class and Ninja job, and of course a storyline update. Check out the end of the trailer above for a clear look at Shiva and her battleground, and the video below for a Rogue and Ninja preview. |
| Mighty No. 9's beta just got a new level Posted: 22 Sep 2014 01:30 AM PDT Some time ago the Mighty No. 9 beta hit Steam. It consisted of one level, and the developers weren't sure if they were going to add anything more to it. Well that day has come, so boot up your game and you'll find yet another stage -- the one featuring the female Mighty No. 2. The developer also notes that they've uncovered a decent amount of bug reports from the beta so far, which is good news. |
| Bravely Second introduces its Three Musketeers Posted: 22 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT Square Enix has a new trailer for Bravely Second introducing heroes Yuu, Jean Angard and Nikolai Nikolanikov; the Three Musketeers. Our time with the Bravely Second demo at Tokyo Game Show saw the trio tasked with retrieving a lost child. After learning the boy was kidnapped by some troublesome bandits, old friend Agnès Oblige sends our heroes off into the woods to raid the thieves' den. The Nintendo 3DS role-playing game will release in Japan this winter. |
| Take another look at Etrian Odyssey Untold 2 Posted: 22 Sep 2014 12:00 AM PDT Atlus is back with more old school dungeon crawling action in Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir, an reimagining of the second title in the series Much like Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl, which arrived on 3DS last year, The Knight of Fafnir adds an new expansive story mode with fully animated cutscenes to the classic formula.
